I don't know the separation. The overall breakdown of scores for Miami is posted on the second floor, but there is no breakdown between the campuses.

The FAU campus scored a 229 on Step 1, while the miami campus scored 220 (avg). UF did score higher. The MCAT avg for UM and UF are very close so their score could be attributed to other factors like 1. most of the exams at UF are on computer and "prep" you for taking the cbt of step 1, 2.they take shelf exams, and 3. THeir basic science teachers could be more efficient teachers.
Hope this helps but dont go to a school due to their step 1 scores (these are averages). go to where you will help = better student. Good Luck!

OKay, so I am kind of upset...

I really like USF (go there for undergrad). I took the April MCAT and it wasn't so great, so I retook it in August and did better giving me what I would say is a decent shot. I sent in my stuff (secondary app, sig page, res aff, pic, and money) 4-6 weeks ago and I am still not complete. This is really frustrating me because I really feel like its too late now. I know I screwed up not turing everything in earlier but I really wanted to know my August MCAT score first.

Anyone know what I should do? Resend? Hand in the papers myself to the med school (since I attend school there)? Any suggestions please.

Thanks

hey dude, just give them a call. talk to them. that's what i did. The guy in the office is hilarious, and I just told him, I'll call back in 3 weeks for a decision. Sometimes you have to follow up on these things, and remind them of when you submitted and when you were complete so they do all that review stuff. Don't sweat it...they only started interviewing mid-september.

Can anyone speculate on an average time from complete to interview (or rejection) for FSU . Also, I am still not complete at USF, does anyone think Im totally SOL ?

Did anyone hear from Kimberly at UMMSM-FAU today?

Can I ask you guys to say a little prayer for me. University of Miami at FAU meets today to make a decision regarding my fate. I fell in love with everything about UMMSM-FAU and am hoping to God that I get accepted.
Thanks

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you!

Did anyone hear from Kimberly at UMMSM-FAU today?

I spoke with her today. She said if we are accepted we will hear tomorrow or Friday. I gathered that if we do not hear by Friday evening then it is probably bad news... A waitlist or rejection.

In regards to USF I think you have to realize that if you've turned in things late unless you have a high score you won't hear until January at the earliest. However, there are people who interviewed the very last day of interviews as in mid March spring break time and still got in even if theywere high tier waitlisted at first.

I doubt you will hear on Friday since it's the Veteran's Day holiday.

I just received an email acceptance from Miami (main campus) 🙂

Congrats. Also, I don't know how effective the FAU campus is about "holding to their word" when telling you "if you're accepted you'll hear on Friday"...I know last year we (Miami campus) heard a week after we were "supposed to hear"...so don't get bummed out if you don't hear something...things just get delayed. Welcome to medical school-you and everyone else are always "behind schedule."

I just got a call from UMMSM-FAU. I got accepted. I am going to wait for the acceptance letter in the mail before I believe it. It feels unreal. I am still in shock.

Hey congrats buddy. I'm sure its real!!!!! hahahahahahaha LOL. I knew you'd get accepted to Miami. They love people with tons of direct pt contact like you. Had a friend with a similar profile to yours a few years ago and she got in right away but that was before the FAU campus was around. She's a 3rd year now at the main campus.

Ohh and good luck hearing from other Florida schools. At least now you have a choice. 😀

For those of you familiar with the florida schools, do you know how receptive they are to deferring a year, particularly miami and florida?

yay, congrats!!!

PS: FL schools (aka USF and Miami), i'm still waiting with baited breath for some love! 🙂

Well since our thread is starting to get quiet, I'd thought I'd start a random countdown. Looks like there are officially 8 days (not including today) until Thanksgiving!

Okay, on a serious note, do we hear anything else from schools if we already got an acceptance letter? When do we fill out our financial aid requests? I didn't do one for college because I was on a scholarship, so I'm not sure what time of the year I need to fill out my financial aid app for med school?

Okay why isn't my signature working? Some days it shows up...other times its doesn't. Hmmm now it shows up and makes me look like a liar!

UF has let people do that before--- you just have to have a bonafide explanation and clear it with the higher ups. A couple of people each year will decide to defer for research between either 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th year for research, which they are definitely OK with.

Congrats to all the UM peeps. I hope to see you guys at the FAU campus in the fall. 😀 😀 😀 😀

I was wondering about the financial aid too. Does anyone know how UMMSM-FAU works ?
Thanks

I just recieved an interview from USF... any advice you guys can give me?

Good Luck everyone! 🙂

UMMSM-Boca fin aid: Your tuition goes to the University of Miami. You're eligible for UM fin aid. You'll get the packet eventually. Until then, I recommend that you apply for the scholarship.

Interviewing at USF: (1) Go to the interview feedback page here on SDN and read everything that's been posted during the past 3-6 months. Know how to answer those questions. (2) Stay with a student host. (3) The school is hard to locate. Make sure that you arrive early so that you can find the place.

Thanks QofQuimica.
To quote Borat: "I like"
I really think the FAU program is neat. Starting with your class, you'll be able to spend all four years in Boca instead of having to move down to Miami halfway through. Correct me if I'm wrong, deuist, but I'm pretty sure that they're going to start letting people stay at FAU the whole time with this year's entering class.

Thats correct, 2011, is the first class staying all 4 years in Boca.

I agree it the UMMSM@FAU sounds really amazing, but if you have no other friends up there, and are going to rely on your classmates for support and friendship... it absolutely TERRIFIES me that I would only have 32-35 people to choose from. I'm capable of doing that, because I went to a VERY small high school and just finished a Master's program with 35 people, but it's not my cup of tea to have to be friends with people that I might not normally be friends with. I'm not saying that would for sure happen, but you never know who you are going to end up in med school with, and at least in the bigger class, there is more opportunity to find those types of people you know that you mesh with.

Has anyone else taken this into consideration? There are other reasons why I didn't opt to interview there...like the emphasis on geriatrics and the different patient population and the location, but the class size was a pretty big deal for me. Any thoughts?

for some people that class size is actually one of the things that attracted them to such a program. I have friends, some of whom are on here (no names mentioned), who gladly would take the small class size of a program like FAU Miami or Mayo med school or other such programs any day of the week over the larger class sizes.

To me, the small class size was a bonus, not a drawback. I guess it really depends on what you're looking for. Personally, I don't like the idea of being anonymous in a huge lecture hall and being taught by people who don't even know my name. I'm not a huge fan of paying thousands of dollars in tuition to stay home and watch lectures on my computer. I would rather talk to a professor face to face than send him an email. And I don't agree with you that the small class size means that you have to be friends with people you don't like. Even in a group that size, people naturally tend to gravitate toward others with like interests. You will always like some people more than others in any group of people, and that would happen even if you had a class with only two other people in it. (Someone would probably be the third wheel. 😉 ) As long as everyone has a good working relationship, it's fine if you're not all giving each other group hugs every morning. There's no law saying that just because you go to class with these people, any or all of them have to automatically become your new best friends.

I hope this doesn't come out sounding rude, because I don't mean it that way. But I actually think you did the right thing by not interviewing at FAU, because it doesn't sound like the program would be a very good fit for you. If you know that you need to have a lot of people to "choose" from, then you should go to a school with a bigger class. It's a strength of our state schools that we have so many options to choose among, not a bad thing. 🙂

Does anyone know the FSU turnaround time from date of becoming complete to when any kind of decision is made?

Also, does anyone know what interview slots they're currently filling in (mid December maybe)?

Thanks.

I don't know why people seem to believe that UMMSM-Boca has a special emphasis on geriatrics. I read on this statement on the interview feedback form and now jessy_erin is using it as a reason as why she won't interview here. The Boca campus does no more with geriatrics than the Miami campus does. Further, to my knowledge, all of the Florida schools (except for maybe UF) do training in geriatrics because the state has such a large population of elderly people.

I also don't see why jessy_erin would say that our patient population is so different. Yes, Boca Raton Community Hospital is pretty sheltered, but the other three hospitals that we're affiliated with have high patient volumes with lots of diversity. Further, since many of these hospitals do not currently have residency programs, you (the medical student) will be the only one in the OR. Instead of struggling to get attention---as might occur at Jackson---you'll have professors' throwing themselves at you to take part.

Hey Deuist,

I know exactly which feedbacks you are talking about. I eventually decided not to interview there, because of a bunch of things holding me back...like not sure I want to live in Boca Raton and the class size among them...but maybe those are dumb. They are still my reasons though.

I appreciate your honesty though, because it's been REALLY difficult to get anyone to tell me stuff about the FAU campus...probably because it's the first year they are doing all 4 years there. I wonder if it's too late to interview there... I guess the feedbacks can be deceiving.

Not wanting to live in Boca and class size are perfectly good reasons. Our biggest strengths are also our biggest weaknesses. For example, all of the deans and professors know who you are. If you skip class too much, they'll come talk to you. At Miami, on the other hand, students can get lost in the crowd and don't have to worry about being observed.

The purpose of our new curriculum is to use the small class size to our advantage. We're trying to reduce the number of lectures we have each week so that we can instead concentrate on small groups. If you enjoy learning and working in teams, UM-Boca might be worth a look. If you learn better on your own and by staying home to read the book, you will be miserable here.

yeah...damn...I'm so confused. People tell me that this whole "small class" thing is a great opportunity to get the attention that you need and become a better physician. But, I don't think that means that the Miami faculty are not helpful, I think it just means that you are required to be independent when you need something, and SEEK IT OUT!

I went to an undergrad institution with 30,000 kids. I drowned initially and then started studying, and did quite well. When I did my masters with 30 people in my program I was super-annoyed that my professors were personally offended when I didn't show up for most of my classes.

I would not mind at all the idea of having small groups that I really helpful, but what I would mind is if most of my learning was all about attending class with professors breathing down my neck. I would be interested in a PBL curriculum, so if you say FAU has that....I want an interview 🙂

ok...I guess I just have to see it all for myself 🙂.

Finally got the acceptance letter from Miami-FAU in the mail. Now, I believe it. Imagine Will Smith singing: I am going to Miami.

I just got a letter from UM today offering me a scholarship of $5K/year!!! :wow: Woohoo!! I'll be going to the FAU campus this fall. I'm really grateful cuz UM's very expensive but it's my absolute #1 choice. I'm a really friggin lucky duck. Congrats to those who've been accepted and good luck to those who're still waiting, hopefully you'll hear good news soon!!!
