home sweet home... Florida

I really hope I get an acceptance somewhere soon so that I can relax a bit. alwaysanangel...do you know where you are going in the fall?

hahahaha I just realized something.

You did exactly what I do. You confused our fellow Floridian AMERICAN Angel with ALWAYS angel who's another poster that posts in the other threads on preallo. You can tell them apart a little bit by the fact that always angel has an mdapps profile in her sig whereas american angel doesn't.

Its pretty funny that you just did what Ii always do cuz I thought I was the only one who confused the two posters.

wow, I did! hehe, well sorry AMERICAN ANGEL 🙂

So confusing...i guess our brain plays the same trick on us

Yeah since I started posting on here, I've see so many people with such similar usernames. very few have unique usernames. Even I don't have one that's unique. I've seen other people make usernames similar to mine only they substitute guju with something else.

yeah there are definitely a few "guju" screen name's out there. So, are you an MS-1 at USF? or...?

Sorry, I realize that even though we have our little thread, I have no idea if everyone is an applicant or where ppl are in the process...I haven't been reading the thread for that long.

ahhh. thought mine was uniue and that it represented what we're all going through here...

Filibuster - the use of extreme dilatory tactics in an attempt to delay or prevent action

At least that's what I felt like every relevent authoritive body was doing during the application process. Yeah, I know. Way too deep into politics, but it comes with old age.

How are you doing...I was reading back a few pages on the thread, and saw that you were initially not receiving the love you were hoping for from the schools... any luck now?

oh, and I wasn't very original with my name....

Silly girl...
I would have them, but I'm trying to lose the 10lbs that I gained while stressing out over what I would do this year.

I'm talking about such dumbness, does anyone have anything better to talk about? I'm just trying to keep our little thread high 🙂

That's bass ackwards. I lost 10 pounds from the stress of application. Then again I'm not chowing on Ruffles watching CSI🙂 But I'd rather be😀

The more we post the more the tangents we'll head off on. So , keep it up Silly girl. Besides, I need something to do at work.

Ok, well then!! *hmphhh* I was not chowing down on ruffles 🙂 I just overate...but now I'm getting back into the swing of things.

What kind of work? I now work at Starbucks...LOL...I was working in healthcare, but it didn't work out, and so I figured how can I pay my bills and have fun?? Now I'm trying to figure out where I want to volunteer.

what is your favorite starbucks drink? I miss working there 🙁

Pumpkin Spiced Latte 🙂 or Chai Latte.

You?

banana double chocolate chip frap or iced white mocha 😀

I'm a stripper for the chippendales. I was working in I.T., but nobody appreciated my body.

On a serious note, volunteering is very important to some schools. Especially USF. Take your time and do your research. Most importantly, make sure that you enjoy your volunteering, regardless of the activity. It will show in your interviews and strengthen your candidacy.

I agree about the volunteering thing. USF stresses it big time. One thing to note is that if you've done anything new to help your case then do go ahead and send updates to USF via REL.

I've had a friend who went back and did volunteering and sent constant updates to USF and that person is now in med school there.

Jessy Erin,

To answer your question I'm not a med student yet. I'm a postbac student who isn't yet applying. I however have had many friends get accepted to USF COM in the past 2 years so I know tons about trends that ive seen and all in what they expect. I've also talked with several adcoms so I know a ton from talking with them as well.

Hey Fillibuster and GujuDoc,

I wanted to say that I do have volunteering experience and a lot of teaching experience. I was thinking about volunteering this year, but maybe not in a hospital...rather in a clinic or something a bit smaller. You know how those hospital volunteer experiences can sometimes turn into you passing ice chips to the nurse. I can't say I've had any of those experience myself, but I have heard a few bad stories from people, so I'm hoping if I volunteer in smaller clinic or organization or service of sorts I could really do something fun and HELPFUL 🙂 Yay.

Just have to sort out my work schedule....*sigh*

Sounds like a plan.

On the subject of chips that you were having earlier, I'm more a fan of sun chips or doritos. 🙂

I'm not a coffee person, so hot chocolate it is!

I agree. I used to drink peppermint mocha on rare occasions but I don't really like drinking too much caffeine. I'll stick with hot chocolate. But what about the desserts?? What's your fav. starbucks food?? Mine is the 7 layer bar.

About anything new...since I submitted my app, I stopped working as a patient recruiter (lots of patient contact), because they decided to restructure the recruitment department, because they are having trouble getting patients. They are basically looking to hire marketing personnel, and I was out of job for the last 3 weeks. Now that I finally found a few options and have kind of a shift schedule, I'm trying to figure out where to volunteer. I purposely chose two jobs where I could do shift work, so I could HAVE FUN (!) and fit some volunteer work/shadowing in between. UNFORTUNATELY...because I was looking for work and going on interviews...I hope med schools understand that some of us have bills to pay 🙁...I have not done anything different since my app was complete.

Gosh, sometimes I think, I should have just done a year long internship at the NIH... HOWEVER, my interviewers thusfar were sympathetic to the fact that I was looking for work in the past month, so hopefully I don't have to worry too much right now.

peppermint mocha with half the peppermint = AWESOME. Reminds me of cold winters from my homeland 🙂

Oh yeah, and sun chips rock....

I'm a resident of Florida now, but yes yes I'm from Canadia!!! But, like I said a few days ago, I'm not a real Canadian anymore, because I flip out when it goes down to anything under 60 here. LOL, actually I'm quoting my interviewer a few weeks ago, when I mentioned the weather, she's like "oh you're not a real canadian anymore"...

Wow, this thread went totally random all of a sudden. While we're on the subject of SDN names, see my signature below. BTW, for all of you non-Spanish speakers, it's pronounced Q of KEEM-ee-ka, not Q of Kwimica. 😉

P.S. I agree with Guju and whoever else said it too that USF cares A LOT about you having recent, clinical volunteering experience.

well...hopefully I have enough clinical experience...

Thanks for the help with your SDN name. I wouldn't have known how to pronounce it.

Guju...I wake up this morning, lounge a bit in the apartment, and all of the sudden I want chips... hehe

Also, YAY I GET TO GO TO WORK TODAY...Gotta eat sparingly so I can make room for a peppermint mocha or something.

😉

Haven't had the 7 layer bar yet, the cookies are good, but I think I like the coffee cake the best! I've been having a problem with starbucks lately....there are three down here in St.Pete and I went to one and everytime I went there my hot chocolate was cold (basically chocolate milk), so I found a new Starbucks and its hot now! But there is a place in the mall, that has even better hot chocolate then starbucks, I just can't remember the name of it!

Okay time for p-chem!

p-chem? blah....

7 layer bar = really good, but rich. Coffee cake has a nice flavour.

Might I also recommend:
iced lemon cake loaf = awesome even if you dont love lemon
scones = delicious, especially the cinnamon if you like that spice.

couldn't have said it better myself!
lol...i got a D in p-chem!!! my teacher was awful and the book was even worse. the one guy in my class that got an A had a phd student tutor him several hours a week...

*bad memories*, but whatever doesnt kill you makes you stronger.

PS - work was awesome...except the cleaning agents they use to sanitize the plates/tools are corroding through my hands 🙂

I am going to UM friday, I am excited! 🙂
how is everyone doing?

I'm taking P. Chem now. Our lab final is Monday and our lecture final is Wednesday. Each week we had a 40-50 page lab report due. The first day of class the professor was like, "this class is not for pre-meds. it will lower your GPA." I was like, "hmm...she can't be serious, it's can't be that bad." Yeah I wish I was a bio major or something other then chem. :scared: :scared: :scared:

p-chem is just one of those courses. It depends on the day with me. Some days I real like it and other days I hate it. I really enjoyed the thermo stuff but now we are doing rates and I'm not to keen of them.

1) congrats natuss!

2) yeah in my Canadian undergrad my major in biological sciences was something like 100 credit hours... basically p-chem and all kinds of other fun classes that you wouldn't expect were requirements...

Hi everyone, I am currently a junior at the university of miami, and am planning to apply to med school next year. I wanted to know out of which of the four Florida schools you guys think I have the best chance.

I have a 3.72 GPA, 3.63 Science GPA
A 30 on the MCAT
Three years of medical volunteer work, and research work
Am a florida resident

Thanks in advance

Hey I am a junior at UM also but I am going the MSP route. Your stats look great and I think you have a legit shot at any florida med school. apply to all and see what happens. 👍

any of them.

Yep, you're competitive at all the Fl schools 😱

Natuss, your mdapps is awesome. Good luck on Fri but you won't need any!

jessy_erin: thanks.. and GL on your interview! 🙂
Brian: thank you 🙂🙂

You are competitive for all the schools. However if you want to be sure and cover your basis you could probably talk with the adcom directors of all the Fl. schools and see what they think. REL who posts on here is the USF COM admissions director. Robyn Sheppard at UF and I don't know who you talk to at UMiami. Dr. Hinkley maybe. But you could probably figure that out since you go there and probably know more about that. But I'd talk to all the schools if you want to cover your basis however i think you are good to go.

hey natuss...thanks!!

I'm doing well, I have to wake up at o'dark thirty to get to the airport... hee hee

Thanks for the input

Reason I ask is I have a friend who has stats pretty similar to mine and is in the process of applying for the second time. Last year he got interviews at USF and FSU, but not UM or UF. This year he has heard nothing. So we're both a little worried that getting into a florida school is a bit harder now.

Hey soulbrotherk,

I think one important thing to think about is why your friend didn't get in last year... Did he talk to USF and FSU and ask how he could improve his app?

Depending on the school, sometimes the interview is the last step and if you screw that up, then it may make or break your app. I'm not suggesting that your friend had bad interviews, but there are other factors that influence admissions aside from stats.

Looking back on one of my interviews last year, I know I bombed it. It was late in the season, my only interview that cycle, and I had no experience or idea of what my interview was asking me. I haven't heard from that school this year even though I would say my stats are fairly competitive for them. I can bet you it's because of my interview. My point is, if your friend doesn't know why he didn't get in last year, and hasn't changed that, then it doesn't matter what his stats are.

Don't stress yourself out, because you are not your friend and he is not you. Stats are always important, because they make the initial cut for a school, but specific ECs, personality, and how you come to a school as a whole package are things that really make a difference 🙂 You just can't compare yourself, and I think everyone on this thread agrees that your stats are definitely competitive for florida schools.

I'm going to have to agree with everything jessy erin said. Again I stress that you should talk with the various adcom directors and I don't mean talk to them when they come to FSU on Deans Day or USF during their med school forum or UF's MCF, etc. What i mean is that you should call them or make an appt with them if possible when you have time. Maybe in the Christmas break if they are around during the week. See what they say.

Based on the situation with a couple of my friends from this year I am thinking community non medical volunteering might be important and something you want to work on. But again talk with REL and the others.

Eh you are accepted you just need to pass it not get a 100%. My friend was in that class a year or two ago. She graduated last year and is taking a year off while studying for the MCAT and all that jazz. Anyhow, she used to love the lecture for that class cuz she was really good at calculus. it must have to do with the indian system she grew up with in India itself and having math teachers for parents. But everyone else used to hate it and go to her for help or form study groups for it cuz it was soooooo hard. But she didn't like one of the pchem professors she had. I think it was the one who taught PCHM 2. I used to see her doing her hw as I was passing through the building and i would think to myself that there's no way in hell I could handle that class.
