Who's going to NYU??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not sure of that model IBM, but from what I am told the IBM is probably one of the most reliable laptops you can get.

Adzam: What shots do we need??

NYU will send you a packet stating which immunization records they need and which vaccinations/immunizations are need to be updated. Hep B, Valeria(?), and I believe one other one. I've had 5 shots this past week and also a physical. NYU will aslo send you a packet about the housing which I believe the deadline for has passed. Regardless, just be ready to pay a grand if you want to live in the dorms, your arm nice and ready for poking, and your credit checked and cleaned for the loan stuff..............PM if you got more questions.....and oh yeah Kill Bill was mmmmmmmmmeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaan!

I almost bought the IBM T42 because of the rock solid stability and the great price at the NYU bookstore. However, I went with the Dell Inspiron 600m because it was a lot cheaper, much faster, and came with a 4 year at home warranty. It might spend more time at the shop if you get one of the bad ones, but I am bringing a desktop as backup. Since the time I've had the Dell, I have had no problems. I would highly recommend this tiny & handy laptop.

Whats up everyone can't wait to meet you all. I'm coming from south florida (anyone else from fl?) so it will be a huge weather change for me, but it's all good. I'm 23 (male) from a large Italian family, so anyone who wants to share some good home cooked Italian care packages sent from momma dukes...look me up.
Hey Broc, I have a few stupid questions hopefully you can answer.
First, I have been reading all these threads about this vital book, and it sounds like a waste of time (not a complete waste of time but as far as tests goes). So, now that there are no transcripts, what exactly do we have to do in order to be successful... write down every word the professor says? Second, as far as the NYU curriculum goes, what undergrad class would you say prepared you the best (or what undergrad classes would benefit you the most?).Finally, what class would you say the majority of the students struggle with? Sorry if I sound like a pain in the a$$....just a little nervous.

You can always use our transcripts bec a lot of the material stays the same from year to year. Although they do a lot of research here so they will mention 1 month ago we found this to be true.

Print our stuff out and bring it to class and make notes on the 2007 transcript. Hell man, we have no transcript for Oral Bio bec they said no and I'm studying from the 2006 transcript and I have a killer grade in the class now. All i need is a 48% on mondays exam to pass

By far Bio chem, anatomy, and physiology helped me the most from undergrad. Sometimes i wish I took histo in undergrad bec you will be looking at a $hit load of SEM, cross sections, etc here

BE PREPARED TO WORK HARD!!! The professors here are no joke. And a word to the wise and send emails to your class about this when your acct's are set up. IF THEY LET YOU HAVE TRANSCRIPTS AND CURVES, ATTEND EVERY SINGLE CLASS OR YOU WILL LOSE IT LIKE MY CLASS DID!!!

Is that how you guys lost the curve?? Because no one showed up to lecture?? hahaha thats classic!

Hey, what are you guys doing about the insurance? Did you receive the letter with all the options? If so , do you have any advice? Just trying to make sure everything is complete.

Whats up boys and Girls

just one question here, any of you guys get your housing assignments (Dorms) yet or does anyone know when we get them.

Thanks

Early August is what one of the letters / NYU housing website says. BTW, July 30 is the last day to get your $1000 deposit back. Kinda got me worried about on-campus housing because they might be crappy or I might get assigned at one of the dorms far away from campus. That's why I'm trying to live off-campus.

Yeah i've heard the dorms are not great but dorms are dorms. I don't think dorms anywhere are great. I am hoping to move into the 26th street apts live there for a year then move out into the city. I figure a year in a dorm is not that bad and it will help me meet some people since i don't know anyone in NY. Like you said I just hope i don't get stuck somewhere far form the school. I asked for the private bedroom type does the 26th street apts have those and whats the link to the housing site?

This was my idea initially but I was pissed I came all the way to NYC to see 26th St and they don't allow anybody besides residents to enter. BTW, there are 2 private bedrooms for 2 people to share at 26th Street Apts. The website for 26th is http://www.nyu.edu/housing/residencehalls/twentysixthstreet/index.html . You can check rates and fees and also the amenities and features. Well, atleast the dorms are furnished and have cable and hi-speed internet.

OH that sucks. Did you give them a sob story that you drove all that way to see the dorm and now can't. I would have 😀 .
Sorry that happened to you man but thanks for the link it was helpful. 👍

Hey NYUers....arent u guys pissed about this whole Mary Kate Olsen anorexic thing? Arent they going to NYU??? Man, I was seriously considering NYU, just so I could have a chance to bone one of them....or even better, both of them!!!

You don't strike me as someone cool enough to even talk to the Olsen twins.

Notice the 🙂 near the end of my post. I was joking too.

Yah right...so why did you write it in the first place?....whatever, lets just drop it and like you said, get back to the NYU talk....damn, I thought the Olsen twins would get much more love than I thought....

Hey guys, I just received a letter from Amy Knowles stating that they are in the final phase of the auditing process. They listed a bunch of crap and then at the bottom it stated that they are still requesting an official degree granting transcript from my undergrad institution??? I thought they already had one when I sent the transcript to AADSAS when I first applied. Is this a different kind of transcript? Did anyone else get the same thing?

hey cheeks

What happens is sometimes your school(undergrad) has not audited your file by the time you request them to send your transcript out. In which case your transcript will have all your course work listed but it will not say that you have actually graduated 🙁 . This actually happened to me but i managed to find out in May when i called to see if my file at NYU was complete after reading a similar post on SDN. Anyway, so all you have to do is have your undergrad school re-send your transcript (send it to NYUCD and not AADSAS) but make sure to ask them if it states that you have graduated on it. 🙂

Okay I hope this helps

Great, so we're cool now. As for the Olsen twins, yea I was a bit surprised by the reaction but I guess it kinda makes sense that nobody here likes anorexic females. 😉

Hey chump,
Next time you quote me, don't be selective in what you quote. You forgot the wink (😉) at the end of my post, which indicates that I was kidding. But now that I think about it, it would be a great idea for you to "kid" with people through PM rather than making the other 20 of us have to read it and wonder how your post has anything to do with NYU. You sounded serious and your post had no indication it was a joke. I thought you were attacking DrVibes. So it looks like you need to learn your place and either learn how to post or, better yet, just keep quiet. No flames intended but please stay on topic. If you want to kid with someone or call them a chump, use this nifty PM feature so that the rest of us don't have to read that crap.

Anyone here planning on living off-campus? I'm curious how far you guys are in the process of finding a place and signing a lease.

Hello all!

I was wondering whether there is anyone who has recently been taken off the waitlist at NYU??? If so when were you interviewed, when did you receive your application status update (waitlist), and when were you taken off the waitlist (what was the duration of the waiting period)? If any of you could shed some light on the waitlist policy I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Due to the fact that NYU is the most expensive school in the world, American students will step over their own dead mother to get into a cheaper school, so I wouldnt be suprised if you find many many people from Canada at NYU, especially from Toronto/Sauga

A dental education will cost you between $100k to $200k no matter where you go. If you are from a crappy state, it might be worth it to go to NY. Plus, NYU students see the largest patient pool in the nation. The school seems more focused on the evolution and cutting edge technology in dentistry than many other schools. Several NYU graduates I know in their late 20s are doing much much better than some of the state trained folks in my city. Plus, living in an environment like NY gives you more of a chance to grow and learn. The city has so much to offer.

Dr.BadVibes,
I'm curious why are you coming all the way from Canada to Temple? It's probably the easiest place to get shot in the a$$, get your car broken into, and get robbed ALL ON THE SAME NIGHT. No offense, but my life to me is worth the extra $100k if I get into NYU. I would have said thanks, but no thanks: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=126572

Hey A$$hole, when did I bash NYU??...all I said that it was the most expensive school in the world, and face it, it is. And you are totally right...a dental education should cost on average between 100-200K, for most schools....too bad NYU cant be included in that category...you can easily add 100K to the figure to bring it up to 300K....ANd I find it amusing how you bash Philly on its crime, because the last time I checked, NYC wasnt getting any safest city awards either, so keep on dreaming on justifying that extra 150K you pay and enjoy paying off your incredibly huge debt! 👍

Actually NYUCD tuition is a reasonable 44k/year. Some schools maybe 5-10k cheaper/year but unless you go to a state school you'll be paying a similar tuition. What most people forget is that it NYUCD, is in one of the best, if not the best locations out of every dental school. It's located in one of the better and most expensive neighborhoods in NYC (Gramercy Park). It's the living expense that separates NYUCD from other schools. It adds on the extra 25k/year, which leaves many students with high debts. Whether the better environment in NYU over philly is worth the extra 100k is up to the individual student. Personally I wouldn't enjoy living in philly, nor many other places where dental schools are located.

If anybody cares to know I will live home in brooklyn and will commute via the BM (brooklyn-manhattan) Bus which comes out to a 50 minute commute each way. The bus is not your usual NYC bus because it has quite comftable seats and will drive extremelly fast to get you there on time. I imagine I'll be able to get lots of studying done on the bus. If everything goes as planned I will graduate with a loan under 200k from NYUCD. I would recommend that other students consider this option as well, there are places in brooklyn where you can catch this bus and get to NYUCD in 30 minutes. Here's a link to the bus schedule if any future or current students are interested.

The only bashing going on here is from your side. I stated several points in my post and then asked you a valid question and I get called an a$$hole. Are you pissed at NYU because you got rejected or something? You're acting rather paranoid and insecure and I can't understand why.

Also, I don't understand how you can add $100k for housing over 4 years. The 4 NYU D-school graduates I know figured out a way to find cheaper housing by the end of their 1st or 2nd year. On average, they graduated with $210k in student loans. Not bad at all, considering what you get in return. Ofcourse, they're not some idiots who just borrowed all they could in the name of financial aid and lived in luxury apartments for 3 years and took yearly trips to Hawaii, Mexico, or Spain. Sacrifices have to be made. One guy is 29 and has almost all of his debt paid off already. And stop comparing NYU location with Temple. It's not even funny. As speter33 said, living expenses is what puts NYU's cost at another level. But if you can get around that or minimize it, why wouldn't I choose NYU. New York is New York. Maybe it's not worth it to you, but it sure is to a lot of people. 👍

Yah if you consider reasonable being the most expensive tuition out of 65 schools in all of North America....and you're right, many schools are about only 10K cheaper, but over 4 years, that is already 40K, on top of the expensive living in NYC....oh yah and the fact that at NYU you have to RENT your instruments, and not buy them like at all the other schools...that adds a hefty amount to the total...its just keeps on going up....and trust me dude, if you think you are going to graduate with a loan from NYU under 200K, then you must be smoking some great crack....seriously, were you drunk when you made your calculations? Just do the math...tuition alone is gonna run you about 180K.....and those damn instruments you have to RENT EVERY YEAR....then books...oh yah, humans need to eat at times as well....unless, Im missing something, I would LOVE to hear how you will graduate with loans under 200K....please enlighten me!

At my interview, the financial aid lady was so cool....so blunt...she said that NYU allots 280K for the 4 years, but she said that is not gonna happen and will be 300K+.....if your financial aid office is saying that, why dispute?

Dont get me wrong, I think NYU is a fine institution and I have always been an advocate for it on these forums, but when you guys try and say that its not expensive, I find that you are spreading false hopes for all you fellow NYUers who will get a nice suprise when they graduate in 4 years...

Actually I never bashed anyone....all I stated was that NYU will have many Canadians because Americans have the opportunity to goto cheaper schools...so how is this bashing?

And how will you graduate with 210K in student loans? on average? where are you getting your stats? Please tell me how you arrive at this number? What kinda cheap housing are you doing? A cardboard box on Broadway or like that dude that was living at the NYU library? What kinda of math are you guys at NYU doing, or are NYU drugs that strong? 😱

And as I recall, you brought Temple into the argument...
