Hi everyone!

I just finished sophomore year, and I ended up with a C- in the 2nd hardest intro biochem course at my university (there are three). I got a B in Physics 2 this semester but an A in my English and Spanish classes. Currently my total GPA is 3.56 and my sGPA is 3.29.

I plan to retake the same biochem course in the fall (and I'm fairly confident I will be able to get an A this time), and my university will average the grades together when calculating my GPA.

Since I don't have anything else lower than a B in any other class, I was wondering if I still have a good shot at MD school in the US? I do almost every pre-med extracurricular activity expected, but should I wait to apply until after my senior year (when my GPA will be higher)? I still have a lot of science classes left to raise both GPAs, and I have reason to believe I will do fairly well on the MCAT.

Please let me know your thoughts/advice for my situation. Thanks!

Retaking one class is fine. Just make sure you get an A for that class and do well for the next two years. You have a lot of time left to improve your GPA. I had about a 3.2 GPA by the end of sophomore year, but brought it up to about by 3.65 by grad and did well on the MCAT. People always discussed my grade trend positively during my interviews.

I would urge you to apply to medical school once when you have the strongest application you can build. If taking a gap year can improve your GPA significantly, I would.

P.S. Your GPA will be recalculated by AMCAS and both grades will count.
