I didn’t vilify. I answered every single question that you asked. It seems as though you didn’t want a productive conversation to begin with as it has just delved in to more "gotcha" questions.

I’m certainly not misinformed. I don’t agree with everything every single democrat has done, including Obama. However, it seems as though trump supporters are incapable of seeing a single fault in trumps words and actions and how it negatively affects certain groups. So yeah you are correct in that there likely won’t be a productive conversation when the president can literally and figuratively shoot someone on 5th ave and still have enthusiastic supporters who think there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I wouldn’t be surprised if next up people are ok with David Duke being president!

Sorry, not every word I say is specific to every person on here. I didn’t mean you in particular vilified me. But please, show me one gotcha question I asked. I said don’t tell me trump is racist, show me a racist policy. I said how specifically are people hurt by him, in policy, not has ever tweeted something you thought was mean. And it’s comments like your David Duke one that shows me how skewed your perspective on America is if you think that’s even 1% serious.

You and I and Elizabeth Warren agree on this point.

One of the issues with increasing the corporate income tax is that you'll have companies leave the country. I'm sure there's a middle ground where we can up the taxes somewhat without scaring anyone else off.

Is anyone on the democrat side addressing capital gains taxes? That seems like a good place to start as well.

I agree, he is naive on many things. And so are many other politicians. Trump's policies are way more appealing in my eyes than any 2020 Democratic candidate. Any Democrat that is reasonably moderate, with a centrist-leaning platform? I don't see any.
I'm done with the gop under Trump. I've been a straight ticket Democrat since 2016 and personally look forward to voting GOP again post Trump once they fix their issues and hypocrisy/platform.

Personally I'd be fine with Warren shaking down wall Street and doing the populism Trump campaigned on but eventually lied about.

They aren't leaving now because no one paid the original rate.

Your same logic was what was used to promote the tax cut to bring jobs home and for workers to get bonuses. A fraction of that happened compared to what went into dividends and buybacks

. Isolationism here is not a bad policy.

Enjoy this then

Tulsi was right. Personally I think she'd do great. Or yang.

At this point though, I'm resigned to voting for whoever gets the dem nomination, praying for the eventual reset button to be hit on the GOP

Gotta protect our their oil.

Matty pretending that his mind could be changed about trump and professing that he’s “just asking questions” so he can nobly get to the bottom of the matter is literally the definition of concern trolling. Try to keep up.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

Here's an example of concern-trolling: I'm worried that Corey Booker is a legitimate threat to Trump's re-election, so I enter a left-leaning thread, pretend to be a Democrat, and post something like "I'm not sure Booker would be a great candidate for us. He seems perennially angry, expresses rage that feels concocted, and is generally off-putting. Do you guys really think he should be running?"

You're welcome for the education.

Gotta keep up oil demand too

I think it is all posturing. The U.S. needs to maintain it's international presence over Russia and China. How do we do that? Buy protecting and buying Saudi Arabian oil. Russia has massive, untapped reserves so we need Saudi Arabia.

I think most politicians would do the same with Saudi Arabia.

We are the largest producer in the world, that production growth came ironically under Obama and has continued under Trump. Demand is flat to decreasing domestically. Trump is a fool to not allow us to be even less tethered to oil by supporting renewables and allowing the auto industry to continue its trajectory of raising mpg and efficiency. He's so anti common sense he's even waged war against LED bulbs

We are fine without sending our lives to the country that sent us the 9/11 attackers.

Yep which is why you won't hear my cry if in 2021 the tax code goes back to what it was pre-2016. I'm hoping not much more than that, but we'll see.

Not racist today! Racism is part of the history of this nation. The battle for true equality under the law began with Martin Luther King. We have come a long way since that time.
The stated GOP plan in many states is to suppress the voter turnout especially among minorities. Early voting is preferentially cut in minority neighborhoods, on Sundays (to curb souls to the polls initiatives run by many churches) and by enforcing voter ID laws which disproportionately affect minority voters. It's worth noting that the biggest election fraud case in the 21st century wasn't from voters voting when they shouldn't but rather a GOP operative who tampered with mail in ballots and "lost" disproportionate numbers of minority district votes. The whole argument against voter ID, at its core, is about suppression.

Just because you don't see racism from your gated community as a white male doesn't mean that racism doesn't exist.

When Obama did these things it was from a place of love and unity, Trump obviously does it out a of hatred for all minorities and women, and because of privilege [emoji849]

Show me the proof. Obama never codify into policy family separation, child isolation, or mass deportations.

Ok, no one jump down my throat for trolling....

Serious question. I’ve never understood how requiring an ID to vote was discriminatory. Are you implying the minorities over 18 don’t have drivers licenses? I’m being sincere. Please inform me.

I paid 39.6% before. Small price to pay to get Trump out of office for me, personally

Under Biden that may be the tax rate or a bit higher. Under Warren there is no way that rate remains at 39.6. Warren needs to raise trillions of dollars per year. You can believe that she will get all those trillions from a few billionaires and corporations but history tells us the money will mostly come from you with an effective tax rate over 50 percent for those earning more than $250,000.

Obama pledged not to raise taxes on anyone earning less than $250,000. Do you hear any of the current crop of losers making such a promise? In the end, the high taxes a Warren needs for her policies may likely cost her a lot of votes.

Illegals and dead people tend not to have drivers licenses.

Assuming she can get any of that through Congress. I do believe we need Medicare and ss reform, something Trump is the wrong person for, since it will require bipartisan action

Exactly, and that seems like the only logical thought is that voter ID keeps people from voting who shouldn’t be voting in the first place. Yet I hear those on the left always say it suppressed voting. Is there something that everyone who supports voter ID is missing that actually excludes legal citizens from placing a vote?

Lots of homeless US born US citizens in my neighborhood with no ID, phone, or anything else.

That's ridiculous assertion nowadays. The number of illegal votes cast in the last election is under 100. Studies have shown that voter ID laws suppress thousands of votes across the country.

And you can believe it or not, but I did honestly hope to get some more nuanced opinions on things, other than Trump is racist/sexist/bigot/homophobe and all his policies oppress everyone whose not a white male. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. And when people start going at you and condemning you and your supposed privilege, and tell you that you have no right to speak on a topic if you don’t belong to a specific intersectionality group, then it leads me to a place where I can see that productive debate is maybe not possible. That’s all bro.

I believe.....not. Myself and other have provided numerous sober examples of how Trump is, in fact, racist, sexist, bigoted, and homophobic. If you want to ignore all his hateful rhetoric, sexual assault allegations extramarital affairs hush money, plus all his policy stances toward LGBTQ in military, non protection of the civil rights act and voting rights act, Muslim ban, bragging about limiting refugees who happen to all be people of color, Stephen Miller's desire to limit legal immigration, his endorsements by David Duke, Proudboys, Stormfront, a tax bill that benefited the rich over the middle class, then that is your prerogative.

But dont say a plethora of data wasn't provided to you, cause now, instead of honestly engaging on any if the numerous topics, you're fixated on two sentences from the other poster about privilege and white males and blah blah blah.

Lots of homeless US born US citizens in my neighborhood with no ID, phone, or anything else.

Oh, I guess that’s a good point. Is that the heart of the matter? Are they any other groups that are affected?

Because it's not just the voter ID. In these states, they've also shutdown DMVs in minority areas. They've increased the requirements of getting an ID. They won't issue IDs to people with outstanding fines and many states have had their voter ID laws struck down as a form of a poll tax. It's not as simple as you make it out to be.

But then again, you aren't arguing in good faith. You are engaging in whataboutism, mislead the facts, misconstrue the situation. This is classic troll behavior in wasting everyone's time and energy in order to make both sides appear complicit rather than engage in honest debate. You have no interest beyond your paltry dollars that come at the expense of everyone else.

...This thread is full of physicians acting despicably for a few thousand dollars while immigrants are rounded up, kids kept in cages, families torn apart,

seems to me these families can be together in their home countries. If they chose to split up their family because someone is deported that’s their choice not ours. The solution to this problem is preventing illegal immigration NOT open borders.

Why not just kill 10% of people coming over the border. That would curtail illegal immigration. If we are going to be amoral or even anti-moral let's go whole hog.

Do voter identification laws suppress minority voting? Yes. We did the research.

So how do you know that the person showing up at the polls is who he says he is without ID?
What’s to stop you from getting voter registration cards from other people and voting? They say voter fraud is rare, but how would they know when it is essentially anonymous?

That’s not a fair analogy. It isn’t immoral to control access to our country.
A somewhat closer analogy would be why not just kill 10% of people coming over the border, we pick and chose which laws to enforce anyway.
(I don’t think that’s a good analogy either, just better than yours)

Sheesh, I know you can’t hear tone via text but is there literally no way to ask a real question? I was dead serious about not understanding the opposition to requiring an ID to vote. I haven’t spent much time looking into it, and I had never thought about homeless people not having IDs. I learned something. Yet you need to denigrate me and claim everything I say is trolling. Gimme a break. And I haven’t said one solitary statement about taxes or money at all. Why do you attribute anything I’ve said to concern over ‘paltry dollars’?

The anger toward non liberals on here is almost laughable.....

Those churches shouldn’t be tax exempt, well none should but especially not those, and lots of others...

the correct study would be comparing turnout before and after voter ID laws changed, not comparing different states. That’s meaningless.

I won't dispute that more (prospective, not observational) research needs to be done since the laws are new enough that those studies are still in progress. However, what I posted is a jumping off point, and it is not meaningless if you take a look at the conditions under which the gap still persists:

"These findings persist even when we take many other factors into account — including partisanship, demographic characteristics, election contexts and other state laws that encourage or discourage participation. Racial gaps persist even when we limit our analysis to Democrats or track shifts in turnout in the first election after strict rules are implemented. Definitively determining that the laws themselves are what lowers turnout is always difficult without an experiment, but however we look at it, strict voter ID laws suppress minority votes."

Those churches shouldn’t be tax exempt, well none should but especially not those, and lots of others...

If churches lose tax exempt status, then they'll be LLCs, bound by discrimination laws.

For instance, if a place of worship didn't want to host a gay wedding, they could be sued for discrimination.

Now that you are aware of the issue you can certainly look it up.

That’s why it’s problematic when people say there are no racist (or sexist or homophobic) policies or actions currently in this country. There are systemic policies that are meant to negatively affect certain citizens and in case it’s not clear, those policies typically don’t negatively target rich, white, heterosexual men. It is not hard to realize that a country that was "founded" not that long ago on racist and sexist principles still has that fabric in its society.

The internet can be both good and bad. Books can be both good and bad. Yes there is "fake news" out there, but I assure you if you are interested in learning about these issues there are a vast amount of legit publications that can educate you about these issues if you are sincere like you say you are.

Beyond the specific issue of voter id, I want you all to consider the 30,000 ft view of voter suppression in the US. Let's look at the numbers:

FRC2018071201-map1_600.png

FRC2018071201-table1.png

Looking at the number of registered voters by party affiliation, the democratic advantage is just staggering. But to get an idea of how states that don't require party affiliation match up, let's look at the Gallup numbers.

--
As of October 2017, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrat, 24% identified as Republican, and 42% as Independent.[3] Additionally, polling showed that 46% are either "Democrats or Democratic leaners" and 39% are either "Republicans or Republican leaners" when Independents are asked "do you lean more to the Democratic Party or the Republican Party?"[4]

--

Trump is unbelievably stupid but the central and state GOP apparatus isn't. If we lived in a society where voting was compulsory, Republicans would lose such a staggering number of elections that their eyes would bleed.

They deal with this in two ways. The first is by far the most effective one, and it's called gerrymandering. The second is various forms of voter suppression. It is inarguable that it is NOT in the GOP's interest to have as many Americans vote as possible, so they're forced to enact all these unlawful and quasi-unlawful measures to achieve that (very unAmerican) goal.

Alabama

In 2018, critics have accused the state of intentionally disenfranchising non-white voters, aided by the Supreme Court which, in its Shelby County v. Holder 5-4 decision, allowed jurisdictions with a history of suppression of minority voters to avoid continuing to abide by federal preclearance requirements for changes in voter registration and casting of ballots.[73] Within 24 hours of the ruling, Alabama implemented a 2011 law requiring specific types of photo I.D. to be presented. The state closed DMV offices in eight of ten counties which had the highest percentage black population, but only three in the ten counties with the lowest black population. In 2016, Alabama's Secretary of State (SOS) John Merrill began a process to require proof of citizenship from voters, despite Merrill saying he did not know of a single case where a non-citizen had voted. Purging of voter rolls is another method of disenfranchisement and it was done so aggressively in Alabama. Even four-term Republican Representative Mo Brooks who, in March 2018, was rated the House's least bipartisan member by The Lugar Center and who was a candidate in 2017, for the seat relinquished by Jeff Sessions, found that he himself had been purged from the rolls. Merrill also refused to publicize the passage of legislation that enabled some 60,000 Alabaman former felons to vote.[74].[75] Alabama's new requirement regarding proof of citizenship, had been approved by federal Election Assistance Commission Director Brian Newby, an associate of voter disenfranchisement advocate, Kansas SOS and Republican Gubernatorial nominee, Kris Kobach.[76] Kobach was cited as a primary author of Alabama HB 56, passed in 2010, which was described as tougher than Arizona's law.[77] Much of the law was invalidated on appeal at various levels of appeals courts or voluntarily withdrawn or reworded.[78] [79][80]

North Carolina

In 2013, the state House passed a bill that requires voters to show a photo ID issued by North Carolina, a passport, or a military identification card to begin in 2016. Out-of-state drivers licenses were to be accepted only if the voter registered within 90 days of the election, and university photo identification was not acceptable.[61] In July 2016, a three-judge panel of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a trial court decision in a number of consolidated actions and struck down the law's photo ID requirement, finding that the new voting provisions targeted African Americans "with almost surgical precision," and that the legislators had acted with clear "discriminatory intent" in enacting strict election rules, shaping the rules based on data they received about African-American registration and voting patterns.[62][63] On May 15, 2017, the law officially died when the US Supreme Court rejected efforts to review the Appeals Court ruling.[64]

For instance, if a place of worship didn't want to host a gay wedding, they could be sued for discrimination.

I’d say they’ll be private clubs, which is basically what they are, that can do what they want. If they become less discriminatory so much the better.

I seriously doubt the narrative that providing a valid ID in order to vote is discriminatory by itself. Regardless of your party, one can believe the intent of this law is simply to root out illegal votes. Or, one can see a nefarious intent to discriminate against black voters when no such intent exists.

I would gladly pay an extra 0.5 percent state sales tax to guarantee every citizen a free ID card. That Citizen would be verified then given the ID for free. There is no intent here other than to preserve fair and free elections for everyone.

I readily admit that when the Obama coalition shows up at the polls the GOP loses elections. So be it. That’s the price I pay for living in the USA.
But, in no way is there intent to suppress these voters. If they are too lazy or unmotivated to show up at the polls that’s the Dems problem.

Where are they going to go? China? They are going to leave and ignore the most important economy in the world? I don’t think so. That scare tactic is fake news. Corporations need to pay more taxes, plain and simple. We’ve deregulated them in the hopes that they would increase wages, benefits, and lifestyles for their workers with all of their massive profits and instead they have brazenly used their profits to give CEOs massive undeserved bonus. Even worse, they spend massive amounts of money to bribe politicians to make our economy less competitive. I say tax the corporations and call their bluff. They’re not going anywhere.

Yeah I think this is why this conversation isn’t going to go anywhere. Of course most government officials aren’t going to straight out say we don’t want black people to vote, but when a policy is put in place that specifically targets black people negatively then one can use their critical thinking skills to determine the intent. If one knows the history of this country then one should understand where such policies come from. Like I said above even though we aren’t literally living under Jim Crow laws anymore or walking down the street seeing black men lynched like we did 50 years ago doesn’t mean that there are no roots of those policies left. But of course certain people are going to go around and around saying they don’t see it. At least white supremacists and the KKK are clear in their intent and honest about it. It can seem even more dangerous when people are apathetic or even ok with how things unfold right in front of our eyes that negatively affect certain groups.

Except if it’s not lily white republicans—GOP Finally Has Documented Case of Election Fraud — Committed by Republicans

serious research found that the actual number of verified improper voting, over several decades, was in the low double digits. The New York Times, in an exhaustive investigation, found just four cases.

But, good news, we do have a fairly documented case—
And it’s a genuine, systematic voting fraud has finally come to light. And—surprise, surprise—it was the Republicans who did it.
In North Carolina, Republicans hatched a cynical plan in the Ninth Congressional district to trick voters into handing Republican operatives absentee ballots. Some were left blank, and were filled in by operatives to vote for the Republican. Others, which voted for the Democrat, never found their way to the ballot box.
Initially, the Republican candidate, Mark Harris, led the Democrat, Dan McCready, by 905 votes. But then it came to light that the Harris campaign had paid over $34,000 to a political consultant to conduct the fraudulent door-to-door operation.
North Carolina authorities are still investigating. Even Republicans are annoyed because there is evidence that Harris used similar dirty tricks to defeat his opponent in the Republican primary. In Bladen County, Harris won a suspicious 96 percent of the primary vote, using similar tactics with mail-in ballots. Efforts are now underway to dump Harris in favor of a less tainted Republican candidate. Facts, not pithy platitudes...

Wow, I thought I could come here for some honest, civil discussion. But y’all are deranged. I get that people think trump is a chauvinistic ass, but now the hitler comparisons are coming out, the fascist accusations, and all sorts of craziness. Bottom line as I see it is that he’s not super pro LGBT, but has strengthened our security and economy. The alternative would open our borders, jack up governmental programs to a level we’ve never seen before, and move us a big step toward socialism. That alternative is far more scary of a scenario than anything Trump has done or will do. And it’s why he’ll win again in 2020.

But go ahead and chalk it up to half the country being racists when he does get four more years.

There's honest discussion to be had, and I think that you could have reasonable discussions with posters like blademd, pgg. etc. The rational posters in this thread do exist. I wouldn't advocate your wasting your time on posters who all but equate Trump with Hitler, tell you that your opinion is worth less because of your race, or repeat the lie that Trump has supported Nazis and KKK members. You have to remember that the phenotype of this kind of poster is almost identical to that of the vagina hat-wearers, and that many of these people actually believed in the Russian collusion hoax.

Pity them.
