I acknowledge that demographic and migratory trends are disadvantageous to Republicans and conservatives (note that the two aren't synonymous). There are solutions to this, but they require a degree of open-mindedness on the part of left-wingers, which appears to be an idea that's DOA, considering the harassment showered on people with conservative ideas in the academic sphere. Espouse left-wing politics in a med school or law school application essay/interview, and you'll be courted, but do the same with positive conservative politics, and your app will be thrown in the trash. I've seen it firsthand. The Left, through an (admittedly) excellently thought-out long-term strategy, controls the levers for economic success, and the path to a stable upper-middle-class lifestyle practically forces one to adopt so-called "progressive" positions. Either that or shut up and keep your head down while left-wing politics are given free reign on the campus, which amounts to the same thing - enforced advancement of liberalism.

So while the Left used to advocate on behalf of the poor, the poor are now a punch line to the Left's late-night comedians/news anchors. "They took err jerbs!!" cackle the left-wingers, even as anesthesiologists worry about CRNAs, rad oncs demand a tightening of the labor market, (a few) radiologists fret about AI, and FM/primary care docs discuss the expansion of PA and NP autonomy.
It’s rather ironic, that the R precept of individual responsibility and that non-governmental intersectionality is so underscored, as one, Rs lead the bottom ten states that are on the federal dole, two, by and large, the largest foundations in the country are from those that associate with the D party and it’s attendant politics.

Oh, the President of the United States of America talks like the wizard of oz? Yea, I guess that must be totally normal.

Enough to get even the biggest MAGA koolaid drinker in the Senate pissed off.

Probably not the smartest thing to do to your loyalists during a possible impeachment process

It's hard to not look at the correlation between single parents and not think fatherless children are a root cause of the crime, violence, and poverty.

2/3rds of black children are born out of wedlock in the US. Two thirds!! Compare that to about 15% for Asians and 25% for whites. Native Americans are around 50%.

I'm not one to throw around moral judgment lightly, but fathers abandoning their kids to live in poverty is Exhibit A for moral horribleness on a cosmic scale. We can debate the reasons for why these disparities exist, and 100s of years of racism and exploitation are a big part of it, but whatever the root of this moral decay is, it's there.

Are fatherless children the cause or are fatherless children the effect?

Have you not been reading any of my posts?

1. The majority of Republicans do not want SCOTUS to revisit Roe vs Wade. The majority wants common sense anti-abortion laws like no abortions after 24 weeks unless rape, incest, or health of the mother.

2. Same Sex marriage- Again that issue is now settled law. The vast majority do not want the issue revisited.

3. Immigration- We are a nation of laws. One of the roles of the Federal govt. is to protect our borders. Why is it inconsistent for a Citizen to want his/her govt. to enforce the laws on the books? We do not want a lawless society where parties can pick and choose what laws they will obey.

I see items 1-3 as completely consistent with individual liberty. The "conservatives" have accepted 1 and 2 yet the Dems want to ignore our laws (item 3.)

1. Why should we make exceptions for abortions after incest or rape? If the argument is that the fetus is some kind of person deserving rights over the woman carrying it, then why should it matter how that child was conceived? If we are going to have common sense anti-abortion laws, shouldn’t we have common sense gun control laws?

2. We agree here.

3. Bernie Sanders, as an example, has called for immigration reform...not open borders as many claim. He has been outspoken on the economic exploitation that have allowed many corporations and small businesses to take advantage of migrant workers and the resulting depressed wages for American workers. He has supported a pathway to citizenship and some kind of legal status for immigrants working here...mainly on the grounds that the rich and powerful are the ones benefitting from the illegal immigration in the form of cheap labor.

Yeah, you're totally going to vote for a party that embraces socialism, increasing taxation, citizenship for illegal aliens, restriction on free speech, gun confiscation, and wealth confiscation.
Literally none of those things are true. You are arguing in bad faith. I wouldn't be surprised if you were a russian/Chinese bot as it fits their modus operandi to a T.

Are fatherless children the cause or are fatherless children the effect?
Why not both?

The claim brought up by Blade was that moral decay is a problem. This claim was disputed. I argued that there is indeed an element of moral decay.

You're now asking if moral decay is the cause of poverty and discrimination, or if poverty and discrimination are the cause of moral decay. It looks like we all agree that moral decay is a problem. 🙂

We do have a moral decay problem starting with POTUS and the White House.

What? Several of those things are absolutely true. Warren wants a wealth tax, Sanders and Warren want to increase taxes, Beto wants to confiscate guns.

Don't get me wrong, the poster you responded to has absolutely jumped on the MAGA train. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful in your responses.

I thought Turkey was a USA ally and a member of NATO.

Are you suggesting we should be alienating our ally?

Closer to frenemy than ally. An ally and NATO member shouldn't buy antiaircraft from Russia against our express wishes and force us to boot them from the F-35 program. They also shouldn't genocide our allies who just helped us defeat ISIS.

If you weren't a delusional Trump stooge, you'd probably realize that the pushback isn't just coming from dems- look at what McConnell, Haley, Graham, Sasse, Rubio, Romney are saying

Wow, sounds like a complicated situation, where enemies are friends and friends are enemies.

What are we doing there anyway?

We have too many soldiers in too many places outside the USA. We can no longer afford to be the world’s defense forces at our expense.

I am not knowledgeable enough to comment on the current situation in Syria and Turkey but neither are most of you.

If Kurdish soldiers and/or civilians die as a result of the USA withdrawal from the area that is regrettable.

The entire Middle East is worse off since Bush entered the fray after 2001. I understand US presence is needed in some areas to maintain the peace and govt stability. Trump has mostly listened to his advisers on those countries.

(at least currently) to open your own practice, set your own hours/days. I know a psychiatrist who takes a week off every month. You could partially retire and work just two days a week for a couple weeks a month. Just have to make enough to cover overhead. As long as your mind is intact (which every other specialty needs as well...), you can do psych.

EM seems like the hardest specialty to do into old age. I thought it was rough just rotating through it in my lower 30's. But ask an EM resident/attending and they'd likely be miserable/bored out of their minds doing inpatient rehab like I do...

Derm would probably be easier in old age. So would FM, outpatient IM (and most outpatient IM sub-specialties). Inpatient would be fine too, but maybe at a lower volume. OB would be rough. Peds (outpt in particular) would be quite doable. Palliative care as well.

Surgical specialists could always stop operating and just do consults. If old age/disease impacts their ability to
Trump Towers Istanbul opened in 2012 and Trump makes up to $1m per year from their ongoing operation. I'm sure that has nothing to do with his decision to placate Erdogan at every turn. Unfortunately, we don't have a General Mattis around to quit in protest this time.

Trumps net worth has suffered significantly since becoming president.

Meanwhile others such as Obama, Clintons, Bidens have leveraged their position to enrich themselves.

One made his fortune before becoming president.

Others made their money through their political careers. SAD

And by the way, trump is a lock for 2020. Who is going to challenge him? Biden? White Pocahontas? Hillary gonna try to resurrect herself?

Impeachment will only strengthen his base. And it will never make it through the Senate.

Maga 2020 deal with it.

A lock? Hmmmn, he won three critical states by less then 78,000 votes—MI, PA, and WI. Do you really think he could pull off that status all outlier again? In fact, recent polling shows him largely behind the D front runners on one on one scenarios. Any of these three go D, he loses.

By way of specific example, Trump’s support in the Rust Belt states that propelled him to the presidency has softened, jeopardizing his prospects for a second term. While they say it’s too early to write off Michigan — Trump aides say the campaign still intends to pump resources into the state — a range of public polling has shown Trump in poor shape here.

“It’ll be tough,” said Greg McNeilly, a veteran GOP strategist in Michigan. Though the president overcame tough odds in 2016, winning the state by 10,704 votes, or less than 1 point, McNeilly expects Democratic turnout to be stronger in 2020. “Trump is the underdog,” he said.

This does not even take into account that while Texas is not blue, it certainly is trending purple and Arizona is on the verge of actually turning blue. So, tell me with granular detail how he will pull this off?

I'm not sure how the GDP argument has any merit whatsoever. Those liberal states with booming cities also have enormous QOL- and wealth-divides between the "wealthy" and poor. Have you ever lives in NYC, LA, SF, etc.? Sure, they work out great for the people who live DINK or well-paid professional lives, but the QOL for the blue-collar workers is comparatively terrible. Red states/areas tend to be equalizers in this respect. Hence why the populist in me finds those areas attractive (besides the fact that I prefer fresh air).

There are a number of reasons why academics lean liberal, but you should understand that this is a 20th- and 21st-century phenomenon. It's mostly because academics are soft, and liberalism is a modern version of chest-puffing... without actually having the pecs to puff out. Science and data do not support what we consider "liberalism" (I'd argue that environmentalism is fundamentally conservative). People who lean "liberal" tend to be relatively divorced from what might be considered the raw realities of life.

"Youngest and most diverse populations" - there's a lot to break down here. Young people are not as wise as older people, so, while we would all like to retain our physical youth, the opinions and preferences of young people shouldn't be of great consideration.

As income and wages go... your list of vaunted paradises doesn't seem to match up at all with lists like this one - and that's even with a bias toward metro areas. The Q isn't how much you're grossing on income - the Q is what the value of your income is.

Regarding insurance and health: you do have a point on this, though a number of the demographics that tend to be "gimmes" for left-wing politicians also happen to enjoy worse health and insurance coverage stats. So, it's not exactly cut and dry.

Your last Q is silly. Not only is the premise flawed (there are plenty of people who prefer to go for vacations to natural settings), but there tend to be more "activities" and attractions in large cities, practically by definition. Are you from a large city? Because, having lived in both large cities and small towns, I've learned that the assumption on the part of urbanites that the yokels are dreaming of excursions to the gaudy lights, garbage bags, and off-off-off-Broadway shows of the cities is simply hubris.
And to clarify, and a bit of researching, as to your point on income inequality- the biggest and largest differences of the top 13 cities had an overwhelming amount of them (8 out of 13) in either a R state or city—see:The 13 most unequal places in America, ranked

I will be voting for Trump but I agree with your post. He will most likely lose the 2020 election. He barely pulled off an electoral college win in 2016 which is unlikely to be repeated in 2020. I am shocked that a socialist will win the presidency ( I’m used to moderates) but this is something I better get used to.

My hunch is that many of you liberals are not going to be happy with the tax policy of Warren as she seeks to hike your taxes by 25 percent on all income over $250,000.

I’m not sure what my partially quoted post (which I believe is from another thread) has to do with Trump, or how it’s relevant in anyway to your statement. Perhaps you quoted me by mistake?

There is a difference between being unhappy at paying too much taxes and being horrified every time I hear the words "President Trump"

LOL "made his fortune." He inherited his money from his daddy and he would be worth $13b instead of $3-4 if he would've taken daddy's money and just put it in an index fund.

And this is how he managed to become one of the Americans who wrote off one of the top 3 biggest decade-long losses with the IRS in the 1990s:

I guess the question becomes:

Just how much is that worth to you?

Since apparently you've been asleep for the last 15 years, it might take awhile to catch you up on what ISIL/ISIS is, how the Kurds helped us essentially crush them, and just generally the evolution of terrorism since the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

I mean honestly it's classic America but it pisses me off. The Kurds have been the most solid allies of America in the region, we should support them as strongly as we do Israel.

Personally I'd take my 39.6% marginal rate back in a heartbeat under Obama and get rid of the deficits, white nationalism, swamp monsters in the cabinet and the crazy foreign policy/kowtowing to authoritarians.

Warren may have to compromise with a moderate Congress. She'll get rid of the rest of the swamp that's been festering and putrid under Trump, and hopefully stop the oval office from being an extension of Fox news and right wing conspiracy theories

this should poll well in 2020 for Trump and the Republicans.... There is a reason why did they didn't campaign on the tax cut in the midterms

Billionaires paid less in taxes than the working class last year for the first time in U.S. history, a study found.

Economists Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman found in their book-length study "The Triumph of Injustice" that the average tax rate paid by the richest 400 families in the country was lower than the rate paid by the bottom half of American households in 2018, The Washington Post reported.

The wealthiest 400 families had a 23 percent tax rate, compared to the bottom half of households, which had a 24.2 percent tax rate.

The richest 400 families had a 47 percent tax rate in 1980 and a 56 percent tax rate in 1960, while the working class's tax rate has remained relatively stable, according to the Post

Me too. Under Trump, it meant we pocketed upwards of 50+K more, and I would gladly go back to taking less to get rid of this amoral pillock git.

“Central to the House Democrats push for the Mueller materials is the historical precedent that DOJ in all previous impeachment investigations — involving presidents and judges — did not fight Congress over access to grand jury materials.

"Frankly, we’re baffled why suddenly this practice over many decades is now reversed," Letter said.

Howell picked up on that point by pressing DOJ to say whether then-U.S. District Court Chief Judge John Sirica was wrong in 1974 to let Congress access a detailed “road map” of the Watergate grand jury materials as it considered President Richard Nixon’s impeachment.

Shapiro argued that if the same Watergate road map arose today, there'd be a "different result"
because the law has changed since 1974. She said the judge wouldn't be able to do the same thing absent changes to the grand jury rules and statutes.

Howell sounded skeptical. "Wow. OK," she replied

In case anyone had any doubt about the kind of swampy crooks that have filled the Trump administration. It’s about obstruction, obfuscation, and protection of the mafia don at all costs. Do yourself a favor and listen to hypocrite Lindsey Graham on CSPAN 20 yrs ago talking about how the Clinton administration was required to comply with House subpoenas or else face an article of impeachment related to obstruction.

... My guess is the dirty laundry that eventually airs whenever his presidency is over is going to be insane.

And another daily reminder for you all that Trump has dozens of conflicts like this, he has not released his tax returns, nor has he divested himself from his financial interest in the Trump Organization; all the while he continues to "serve" as POTUS

To all the geniuses who think this administration is making them richer and protecting them from the costs of socialism: your wealth will take a nosedive pretty soon.

One can’t have a rising deficit and a strong dollar forever. Sooner or later, the tide will go out and we’ll see how naked we all are. This president would rather make the dollar worth less than the paper it’s printed on than recognize his own demagoguery and business incompetence. He doesn’t care because a lot of his money is invested abroad, so he may even benefit from a weak dollar, who knows.

The only people getting richer are the ones running the country and their cronies. Just as in a third-world banana country. Food for thought.

Ah yes, the old way of thinking: sell out American manufacturing to China so that we can buy a ton of cheap s***. Nevermind the fact that when we have a ton of unemployed folks who are now addicted to opioids (from China and Mexico) and are on welfare.

We could, you know, reconfigure trade relationships so that Americans have real jobs and real purpose. If you weren't filled with so much hatred, maybe you'd see the needs of other Americans in "flyover country".

"Today the Republican majority is not judging the president with fairness but impeaching him with a vengeance. In the investigation of the president, fundamental principles which Americans hold dear—privacy, fairness, checks and balances—have been seriously violated.

And why? . . . We are here today because the Republicans in the House are paralyzed with hatred of President Clinton. And until the Republicans free themselves of this hatred, our country will suffer.

I rise to oppose these unfair motions, which call for removal of the president of the United States from office."

Didn't Obama give Putin "flexibility" in 2012 to invade Crimea?

Your right wing talking points keep changing. In reality, Obama wasn't talking about Crimea at all. But I'm sure Obama can be whatever Boogeyman you want him to be.

He'll always be the better liked and more successful president than the current failure we have in the oval office

How come Trump hasn't talked about Obama's Birth certificate lately??

Nancy was correct. Republicans wanted to impeach Clinton over lying about a BJ. Dems want to impeach Trump for subverting and selling our democracy for monetary and political gain.

"Article Three of impeachment against Richard Nixon, the Article was based on the idea that Richard Nixon as president failed to comply with subpoenas of Congress," Graham says in the clip.

"Congress was going through its oversight function to provide oversight of the president. When asked for information Richard Nixon chose not to comply and the Congress back in that time said you're taking impeachment away from us.

"You're becoming the judge and jury. It is not your job to tell us what we need, it is your job to comply with the things we need to provide oversight over you.

"The day Richard Nixon failed to answer that subpoena is that day that he was subject to impeachment because he took the power from Congress over the impeachment process away from Congress and he became the judge and jury"

-Lindsey Graham

Fair is only fair, right Mikkel? Trump must comply with congressional subpoenas
... or I take it you side with hypocrite Lindsey?

Since apparently you've been asleep for the last 15 years, it might take awhile to catch you up on what ISIL/ISIS is, how the Kurds helped us essentially crush them, and just generally the evolution of terrorism since the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.
Maybe the Kurds deserve their own country.

One of the ironies of that situation is that they might have one, if not for one of our other allies in the region. Good will toward Turkey and loyalty to them as an ally has been a large part of why the US has not supported an independent Kurdish state. Post Ottoman secular Turkey has hated the Kurds and been semi-regularly killing them since the end of World War I, and the Kurd have hated them back. A reasonable argument could be made that both sides had legitimate grievances.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Kurds are not wholly unlike the Mujahideen. We have supported both while we have had common enemies. They're not at the crazy Wahhabi end of the Islam scale but they're not exactly warm & fuzzy enlightened liberal western Muslims either.

Careful what you wish for. A big reason they've been so froggy with Turkey has been Turkey's secularism.

This isn't my endorsement or condemnation of any particular US policy or non-policy, or action we have or haven't taken. I'm just saying ... we've given these guys an awful lot over the last 30 years, when objectively we really never owed them anything at all. That their objectives sometimes meshed with ours and we worked together doesn't mean our destiny must be forever coupled to theirs. Maybe there's a graceful way to extricate ourselves from that conflict, maybe there's not.

How come Trump hasn't talked about Obama's Birth certificate lately??

Obama asked for a foreign leader's help (Putin) to let off the United States in an election year to help Obama's reelection chances. In exchange, Obama did not interfere in Russia's invasion of Crimea, which shocked the world. Post-Soviet Russia invades and annexes territory from another country, and Obama doesn't care.

Hillary Clinton and the DNC paid FusionGPS, which subcontracted Michael Steele, a former foreign agent, to use his Russian intelligence sources to manufacture dirt on Trump for election gain.

The Obama administration weaponized the IRS to target tea-party conservatives to affect their impact in election years.

The Obama DOJ used foreign nationals, like Mifsud, to entrap Americans, and use that against Trump in an election.
