Wisconsin 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

Stressing over the other prep experiences, like I haven't done anything non-vet related. Do I just write "no additional accomplishments"? Makes me sound so boring and dumb šŸ™ƒ
No, it doesn’t! It’s better to be honest versus try to stretch something out. I’m putting N/A for non-vet related too, especially since it seems like they only want hours updates for vet related experiences. For example I can add more hours under my extracurriculars, but it’s so insignificant, why bother.

I feel like this is a creative way to do an interview without doing an interview. They send it during most people’s final exams. And right before Christmas. It is nerve wracking but if it is N/A, it’s N/A. Guess I am just not sure what you could do (or not do) in 2 months that would move the needle from rejected to accepted. Or vice versa. But I will add everything I can think of. Best of luck to everyone!
I agree 100%, unless you somehow find the cure for cancer or something😭 idk what could possibly change- maybe the essays? Seems like they want to get a feel as to personality traits of the applicants with the ā€œwho do you admireā€ essay

If I already wrote an explanation statement on VMCAS do yall think I should copy and paste it into the optional essay portion of the supplemental or just leave that part blank?

I wouldn’t, since they mention not to repeat anything that’s already on VMCAS. They can already see the explanation statement there.

I just got accepted to my IS school today🄹 Debating not spending the $60 on the rest of the supplemental - Is that bad of me because I already spent money on the rest of the application? Not sure what I should do
If WI is your dream school maybe but if I got into my IS I’d be SOLD haha- adding that you’d be saving infinite amounts of loans and money by paying IS tuition vs OOS tuition compared to the $100~ dollars down the drain for vmcas. I think the IS tuition is worth it

You guys are so right. I think I was just in shock from getting the call today and was like ahhh what now šŸ˜‚. Everything you said makes total sense. Thank you both! šŸ«¶šŸ»

Congratulations! That’s awesome!

I made an account for the supplemental...and thats as far as I got. I havent read through it, nothing. I am feeling super hesistant about continuing this application but again, I keep getting that "what if" feeling in the back of my head. Same thing happened with UAZ and after 10 weeks of being on hold, I got an interview invite. IDK the universe works in mysterious ways...Thoughts? lol

If I work in an animal model lab and my experiment uses both animal handling but also bench work, what section does this fall under?

I word-vomited the essays to get a rough outline and edit them afterward. I met with a grad school counselor at my university to review what I had, and she told me to rewrite my second essay completely. I struggled with it the first time I tried, so that's great.

I’m there with you. I decided to move forward and submit just since I’ve already done so much of the leg work to apply, and you’re absolutely right, it only takes one school! I’m also seeing it as the final, exhausting sprint at the end of a marathon- just a bit further and I can hopefully relax. Narrator: but they did not relax!

Anyway, I do have reasons to like UW, so I am willing to put in this effort even though there’s a small likelihood of admittance. Having an acceptance already in-hand, especially to an IS, would change that. Narrator: but alas, they have no IS.

Wanna finish this together, @vampyrica ??

That’s what I did - I looked for essays with similar themes so I could generally alter them and save some time. Helped with one essay at least!

I would say consider what your experiences lack. If you lack research experience, put it on research or other non-vet related or vice versa. Also depends on your role in that experience; it sounds to me more research related; animal handling doesn't really mean veterinary or animal experience if most of what you did involves bench work

This is what other doctors have told me to do in these cases btw

If possible I’d split the hours amongst the two groups- like how many hours would you average you’re spending handling animals vs doing the lab work. Put those in their respective categories

this could work too, but yeah if you only spent like example 10 hours on animal handling vs 50 hours bench work then idk if that would just be too much work. Again, consider what areas you lack and do what makes more sense to you!

word vomit is the way

It is truly so hard to come up with a response for any of these since I was so excited to be finished with these type of essays after submitting like 20 of them on VMCAS
same omg im kind of spiraling... Im in the middle of my finals week and I have 17 credits of classes so I need to literally fish for time to dedicate to answer these questions again

Is question #5 (the optional one) not just the same question as the VMCAS explanation statement???? I don't just want to repeat myself but I don't want to leave it blank either.

Also, is anyone applying for the dual DVM/PhD program? I'm considering it, but not sure if it'll affect my chances at the DVM-only program. I might give the admissions office a call tomorrow and discuss the specifics of that.

If you don’t have an explanation statement, leave it blank. There’s no reason to fill something in just for the sake of not leaving it blank! They made it optional for a reason!!

I guess you're probably right! I wrote a full explanation statement that was sent to every school but I'm not sure what else I could add to the Wisconsin app without simply repeating myself from that essay. Especially since the third question on the Wisconsin app gives an opportunity to talk about challenges and life experiences.

Applying to their dual degree doesn’t increase your chances if that’s what you were wondering

Yes I think this supplemental question is for explanations referring to extensive circumstances that have occurred since vmcas submission. For example, extreme illness or being hospitalized that has resulted in not a single hour of anything more being added to your application or explaining maybe poor fall grades due to a horrible accident or something random in that way. It says don’t repeat vmcas so I assume it’s not the same as the original explanation statement

That makes sense! Thank you for your insight!

One made me lol this process is just so brutal
the funniest thing, is that I didn't even ask for that. the person just went "oh, just so you know, we only accept one student per year". like thank you for the encouragement

yeah, I even called the school at some point and they told me that only ONE person gets accepted to the dual degree DVM PhD. so yeah I agree with what you said.
I didn’t apply for any dual degree programs because I don’t think I’d stand a chance, but even in my worst nightmare I would not have guessed it was only one seat 😭

Darn, I was going to apply to that program today, but now knowing that there's only one person who gets accepted, I don't think I will. Not only is there a very low chance of getting into that program with all of the extra essays that I would have to write, but I think it would be lonely to be the only person in that program with not even one other person to go through it with lol

I know, im applying anyway even though id probably won't get accepted. it would bring me peace of mind to know I tried.

Edit: also, I only applied to 4 schools so my chances are low as it is. so šŸ™‚))))0

does anyone know if the payment for the supp app registers the same day or later? Im worried about when I'll turn it in formally to ensure they receive everything before the deadline
