Hmm...that guy who turned down harvard actuall didn't seem to have that amazing of EC's (part of the reason I was surprised he got in, 'cause from what I've seen on mdapplicants, that's a very big thing for them)

though you are right in principle, mdapplicants gives only a small glimpse of the students that get into harvard and elsewhere. There are many fake bios and also many exaggerations. for example, if you look at harvards mcat avg and you look at the mcat avg of people who matriculate at harvard based on mdapplicants, i bet you would find a stark difference... same goes for other schools.

Just do what Dr. Rey did -- do a brief fellowship there after having attended med school and residency elsewhere, and then wear a Harvard sweatshirt and keep a Harvard mug on your desk for all to see. No one ever questions it.

LMAO. You crack me up. That's a good one. Yeah...I keep that one in my rolodex for later reference.

I'd take McGill and University of Toronto over Harvard. I'm not completely aware of how major Harvard is because I live in Canada. However, I do know that McGill and the University of Toronto are probably in the top 10 places in the world for medical education as I'm sure Harvard is as well. Plus, they are A LOT cheaper.

If I got into Harvard... it would be pretty darn hard for me to turn it down, barring a ridiculously bad fin aid package. But I really like Penn too, so if I got into both, it would be a pretty tough choice.

I do personally know 2 people who turned down Harvard, (and one who got in off the waitlist). One person got into Harvard but not MSTP and headed to Hopkins MSTP instead. The other opted for Columbia to be near home.

You'd live in Antarctica for four years just to say you went to Harvard?

it's called a hyperbole, old dude

What firmly shut doors are these and what proof do you have that harvard puts out superior clinical physicians?

His point wasn't that they haven't heard of it. It's that they don't care as long as they are treated well.

1.your right every thing is equal in the world and people's opinions are completely unbiased. thank god.
I never said they were superior. Just that being a graduate from there would be (slightly) more advantageous than your run of the mill med school for most people all things being equal. if you say otherwise then you should have to pay to be on this site.

2.well he didn't prove his point. his "proof" was that people didn't ask their doctors and i'm saying that's not true. so his arguement is crap.

I already beat you to mentioning about him but no one seemed to care. They are on their premed high horse. You mustn't forget that. Ohh and I know people who'd rather just stay at home then apply to HMS any day. Actually someone I knew who interviewed their last year said that even had she gottena accepted she wouldn't have gone. I know quite a few who wouldnt go to HMS but then they also wouldn't apply their in the first place. Only that really want HMS sooooo badly who have the chance of getting in there based on numbers and ECs would apply there.
👍

Luckily those people will probably hit their heads pretty hard when they fall off that high horse during 1st year.

1. Now you say a slight advantage and previously you referred to firmly shut doors. If the advantage is slight as you say, how can you not fathom people choosing other schools for reasons such as location.

2. On the second point, none of the people in this discussion are practicing physicians yet so we don't really have much reason to believe that they do ask. As you said, the potential harm here is minimal. Thus I'm not willing to go on a precautionary principle and accept with your more pessemistic view of patient behavior. Instead until I obtain positive proof that patients do care I must exclude it from my decision making process.

I'm an HMS first year and am getting a kick out of reading this thread...

I don't actually have anything on topic to contribute, but I just had to mention one thing for anyone who might be interested (since it's a common misconception): HMS is actually in Brookline, not in Cambridge.

Ok! Sorry for the interruption, and best of luck to all of you getting into whatever your dream school may be 🙂

Ha, hi Risa. Hope schools' going well for you. This is a funny thread.

So I haven't posted on SDN in a while, but my name popped up so here I am. I don't fit an average student's profile, so my reasons for turning down HMS don't apply to most people (well the financial aspects likely do). I will say I'm still happy with my decision and am loving life at Michigan.

While these speculative threads are tons of fun, just remember than any US med school will get you a great education, and as that poster who showed the dean's med schools revealed, won't really limit your options. Getting in anywhere is a great accomplishment. If you are lucky enough to get multiple acceptances, make sure you'll be happy wherever you choose.

And if you haven't applied yet, give Michigan and HMS both a try. Both good schools. 😀

It's so rare getting good horse sense on these forums that sometimes I wonder if I read it wrong. Well done, dajimmers...

I was at Pitt for an interview a couple weeks ago and met a guy who got into Harvard but deferred to attend Pitt...

you sure about that? Maybe he had a family situation that was more important than Hah-vud.

When you join, Harvard becomes the family. And if modern day mafia stereotypes have taught us anything, it's that you never leave the family.

thank you, i felt like mentioning that six or seven times already.

In my opinion, Harvard is to medical school as The "U" (University to Miami) is to college football-well at least in its glory days (R.I.P. Poll appearance streak....). Most believe only the best are offered the opportunity to attend, but its not necessarily where you'll find the best players- look at Peyton Manning (Tenn.), Michael Vick(VT), LaDainian Tomlinson(TCU), Randy Moss(Marshall). Sure, The U attracts the most scouting agents (residency doctors) and even second stringers have a chance at getting to the NFL (top residency programs) because people figure, 'Hey, you go to the U, you have to be some kind of good', and no one can deny thats a hell of a benefit. But there are so many other great schools that produce great talent like FSU, Texas, Notre Dame, and USC that theres no way you're less capable by selecting these equally outstanding programs. No matter where you go, at the end of the day everybody is still playing the same game, and your ultimate success will be determined by your abilities and the determination you put into your trade. Here's to football! 🙂

In case you didn't notice, I'm kind of a sports junkie......

I turned down Harvard NP to go to Hopkins (I'm an MSIII now on a year-out program at HMS) and have to honestly say I regret my decision.

Don't get me wrong, I've really enjoyed my time at Hopkins and have met some awesome people and mentors. Comparing the 2 school's pre-clinical curriculums I also prefer Hopkins (though this is moot since both schools are changing their curriculums this year). However, the organizational structure, facilities and breadth of opportunities are just so much greater at Harvard. That and it's nice to be able to walk out alone at night now without fearing for my life.

Hopkins Hospital may be #1 in the world, but they're also working with ancient equipment and out-dated ways of doing things. This is 110% made up though by the fact that the faculty are so top notch. At Harvard though you have the opportunity to work at so many different hospitals and see so many different perspectives.

To qualify what I'm saying, my fiancee was rejected by Hopkins (she is now a student at Harvard) and one of the big deciding factors for me to pick Hopkins was because I met with the one of the deans of admissions and was told that he would personally ensure her a spot at Hopkins. He was also subsequently fired for various grossly unprofessional acts, but that's a different story.

All in all, if I had to make the same decision again I would pick Harvard. That's just my opnion and I'm sure others will disagree.

^ I'd definitely pick Harvard over JHU. But then again, I'd pick a lot of schools over JHU (If I somehow got into all these schools to begin with )

Yeah. If my biggest stress this season is having to choose between Harvard and Hopkins, I'll be a happy clam. But I'm worried that not applying to either will reduce my chances dramatically.

to comment on the Miamy analogy...

one of the trustees at my undergrad school who did his residency at Harvard described the school this way:

"Harvard isnt really interested in getting the world's top scholars or top doctors and whatnot. Everyone wants that. What Harvard wants are the word's best piano players, gymnasts, and published novelists"

I would turn down Havard any day of the week. Even if they gave me a full ride I wouldn't go. I didn't even apply there. In my opinion Harvard has nothing to offer me. Howard is my dream school. Go HU! 😀

I'd pick any med school in the south-east over Harvard. In fact, draw a line from Richmond, VA to SanFran, CA and I'd pick any school south of that over Harvard. I could never live up there for 4 years. Location is everything to me. A MD degree is a MD degree is a MD degree.

If granted an acceptance to Harvard Med. right now, would anyone honestly choose a different school? Or is everyone's dream Harvard?

harvard is definately NOT my top choice. while it is a good school, i'm not crazy about living in boston for 4+ years and i'm not really attracted to schools based only on their rankings.

that's just me though 🙄

If they gave me a full ride and I had to pay everywhere else, then I'd probably go there. It's hard to turn down a full ride anywhere. Just wait til all those threads start in May about "Should I go to Harvard or take the full ride to Michigan?" Spare me :barf:

LOL!!!! Seriously!!! Although I think one of them who had a Hopkins vs. Full ride at UMich ended up going to neither. I saw her facebook and looks like she might have deferred or opted out of medicine to study abroad for a while.

I would turn down Harvard for a number of other top schools, especially those in the mid-west and west.

You know, all the HMS/other east-coast med school interns/residents I talk to over here pretty much hate the east coast. For example, one intern said he had to always ask the chief resident a question and then the chief asks the attending, even if the attending is present. In contrast, I'm a pre-med and was able to ask my attending al kinds of stupid questions...
Another resident related stories of nurses being exceptionally rude to him and each other. Any similar experiences by SDN east-coasters?

Bearing in mind that at some point you will perhaps be an attending having to field stupid questions from med students, is this system really better?🙂

I wouldn't mind answering stupid questions, and i don't ask them during surgery 🙂, just during rounds etc.

😱C'mon people it is HARVARD!Why not?😕For me Harvard is #1 on my list of medical schools.😎I've already been to there campus and I have seen what there is to see and I've fallen in love.😍lol

I know someone who turned down a full ride to Harvard for a full ride to WashU. Don't be so obsessed with the name recognition. There are plenty of reasons not to attend Harvard. One being if you don't like Boston (I certainly didn't).
