Would being a stripper prevent me from getting into med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So who wants to join the heavy metal band I'm about to start called "Moral Turpitude"? :horns:

Uh, you guys. . . "selling shots in my bikini" means selling shots of alcohol at a bar while wearing a bikini, doesn't it? She's not standing around in a bar selling photos of herself wearing a bikini. Lol. How weird would that be?

It definitely crossed my mind, but I figured you would tell us if you wanted us to know.

🙂

Look, I am not judging, as in condemning you. I feel like you have missed the overarching point here. The rationalization you give is that "The end justifies the means." That's something some folks find problematic. Also, how is this an example to other girls, women, people in general. The objectification of females, males, children is a very serious issue throughout the world. Why include yourself in this, especially given your future aspirations. Just one woman's POV.

Assuming this is not a troll....

I would look at this from an economist's point of view. Why does this job pay so much money for such easy work? For the reasons cited by @Law2Doc above. It reminds me of all those people who end up in jail after a 'friend' asks them to check a suitcase on a plane for an easy $500.

First of all, there's this thing now called Google. Whatever it is, someone will find out and post it online. Face recognition software is getting better all the time. People will take your picture, and it will be posted online, and it will eventually be tagged with your name. You are naive if you think that it won't hurt you socially and professionally. It might not keep you out of med school, and it might not keep you from being licensed, but it will hurt you. Now, 40 years from now, you'll probably be proud of those photos. You'll keep them around to show your friends how great you used to look. But between now and then, they will hurt you, big time. It will cost you jobs, and it will cost you relationships. Not everyone will want to be married to someone who has explicit photos posted online. And they will be posted. Before you scold me for being judgmental, I don't care, but others will. Do you want to take that chance? Will the medical group that you want to join keep you after patients find your photos? Will you want to spend the next 20 years fending off solicitations and knowing looks from hospital staff, friends, co-workers? Ten years from now, when you're earning $400,000 or $600,000 a year, or could have been, will the money you earned stripping still look that impressive?

Next, the other risks. Does everyone get arrested, get raped, get assaulted, get hooked on drugs? No. But the risk is there, and that risk is compensated by the high salary. But you are at a very high risk for all the things mentioned by @Crayola227. All that money will be gone very quickly if you are arrested. I'll defer to @Law2Doc here, but I would say you'll start with $2,000 to $5,000 just through your arraignment, but if you're smart, and you don't take a plea deal right away, you will spend at least $20,000 to clear a minor charge, plus probably missing a semester or two of school. This is assuming that you are innocent. Do you have good health insurance? Even if you do, one punch in the jaw or cheek can run up bills of 20k or more, and leave you permanently disfigured or with permanent double vision ( which is much much worse than it sounds ).

When all is said and done, the risk that this job will cost you more than it earns you is too high for me to recommend it. The risk is high, the career is short. Keep your bikini on.

Don't get caught up in the life.

Don't tell ANYONE your business. That includes people you know now and people you will meet.

Save your money and budget wisely but don't let yourself be ruled or your worth determined by how much you make or don't make.

TRUST NO ONE.

The people you work with are not your friends.

Don't drink or do drugs.

Consider therapy because it's not a glamorous job.

Consider an accountant or business manager if you are trying to pay your way through school. Treat this like a business. Certain things are business expenses. Blowing a ton of money on expensive shoes is not.

Work in Vegas on weekends or in other cities (Portland, Atlanta) or work far from where you live or attend school.

In the end, it's about what you can live with. No one has to know what you did because I guarantee you, the anonymous people on here judging are the ones at the strip club blowing wads (pun intended) on women they can only dream about.

It will change you. It will change how you view others and how you view yourself. It is a very ugly subculture.

Don't let anyone make you feel crappy over what you decide to do. It's your life and this job has nothing to do with what type of person you are. There's no reason to tell adcoms anything but consider volunteering, internships or a part-time job to fill in gaps.

Never go home with a customer, management, or even the other girls.

Always carry a weapon on you and always get security to walk you to your car.

After tipping everyone, be sure to tip the security very well. You may think you are friends with these people, but it's a relationship based on money. You want security to be your "friend" and walk you to your car, and look out for you when men get handsy.

THINGS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. In this rape culture of the USA, people believe dancers are prostitutes and ******, so when things happen, it's automatically assumed to be your fault.

Always watch your stuff. The girls steal. Never put down your purse. It's a good way to lose a night's work.

Pepper spray, stun gun, a knife, concealed carry and a self defense class. Always be careful and tell no one who you really are, NEVER give out your phone number or your real name, and make sure you are never followed home.

Don't fall for the traps. You will see, hear, and be exposed to a lot more than you bargained for. This goes back to: TRUST NO ONE.

Get in and get out and don't let it distract you. Only you can decide if it's worth it but I'd strongly recommend a job that will have less lasting emotional impact.

Re: selfies...I am pretty sure taking photos and videos is not allowed in most reputable clubs. (Again, security is your "friend" but in any case the person you become in "uniform" as a dancer is not easily recognizable when you are out in the bright lights of the real world.)

Your post is very heart warming -- "don't let people dissuade you but this is a job that will change you, you can trust no one, and you hopefully won't get raped". ..

Thank you. I'm glad you got something out of it. Makes me feel wonderful knowing I helped two people. You and OP.

I agree with the perception issue, but we'll have to agree to disagree on the size of those jumps. I think going from dancing to doing something that can give you an STI is a huge one that isn't tempting for someone with real prospects.

Eh, most states have a rule any part of your body has to be like 6 inches from anyone's crotch, and if they touch you at all you have to end the dance.

It is almost impossible to follow those rules and not actually be asked not to work at the club anymore.

You will have to bend the rules to make money, and any stripper that denies that they did is like any doc that claims all their notes are 100% accurate and really did the whole history and PE personally and a 12 point review of systems.

That said, you will compromise your integrity but likely not enough to get arrested but it is a risk.

Me getting stabbed by an IVDU patient with a dirty hep c needle on a shift in the ED is also a risk.

Just think it through.

And I was assuming the OP was selling photo snapshots of themselves in a bikini. Bad news. Better off stripping if you really keep it under wraps.

No one knows how they will actually feel at the job till they do it. It wears on your soul no matter what. It also wears on your body, the late hours, booze, stripper heels, pole dancing.

Pole dancing can be super fun though! You can learn tricks on YouTube.

Alcohol problems can sneak up on you.

@DoctorDrewOutsidetheLines know what they're talking about.

You will definitely get grabbed, called names, disrespected, and degraded. You'll be called a slut and have your body disrespected. You'll be told you're too tan/not tan enough, too many tattoos/not enough, hair too short, too blond, too brunette, you name it. That might be fine but you will definitely be touched in ways you don't like. You might be able to deal with it all, but just so you know what you're getting into. There is pressure for breast implants and cosmetic procedures. And please don't cover yourself in tattoos. I knew a girl who got a really gross infection and scarring in her new tatt from rolling around in the glitter and other stage grime. It's pretty gross on stage.

Definitely be sure you work where you can wipe the pole down with cleaning solution, vag juices cover like every square inch of the club.

The money often isn't as good as you think. Keep track of hours, how much you tip, and don't be stingy or it will hurt you eventually, keep track of expenses and when it isn't profitable don't do it. When the economy was **** I knew girls who would go home losing money after house fee. Or it would work out to less than minimum wage, clearly not worth it.

Portland is a really tough market because it has the highest strip clubs per capita of any city.

I've never been at a club that I didn't see a girl doing what is legally prostitution or just generally gross. You want to be at a club where the girls are snobby about that and report those girls or it depresses everyone else's wages , encourages the clientele to assault, and puts everyone at risk of a sting. Which happen way more than you think.

I don't think highly of the clubs where girls are performing cunnilingus on each other on stage and letting customers kiss them, touch their boobs and butt, and finger them.

EDIT: how could I forget the handjobs and blowjobs going on back there? Haha.

If you have any questions feel free to ask, I just happen to know people who know people.

hopefully your ADCOM is not a regular John at your club...or maybe hopefully he is...

I was making $300-500 a night for 4-5 hours from just selling shots in my bikini. Stripping would most likely be more money.

Ah, not selling pics. Just bartending in a bikini. No, that is likely better money and less likely to get you into trouble. Wear a wig and do something crazy different with your make up, fake name, amd deny deny deny.

Bartenders at stripclubs have a lower ceiling on tips, but more steady. You get hourly for sure, and 90% of the customers have to buy drinks and will tip (unless they play video games/gambling/pool) in which case you don't make money but the dancers don't make off them either. The dancers have to tip to you. And the fact that the customers can't "have" you and you're "classy" enough to be employed to keep your clothes on, generally makes you more popular than the dancers to some patrons.

I would be a bartender in a strip club over dancing any day, most dancers will tell you the same. In fact, that's why that job is usually harder to get than stage.

if you haven't yet....and you are thinking about med school, starting would make you an idiot.

Right or wrong, too many people have issue with it and medicine takes decorum and reputation seriously
I've known of girls that have done this in the past. There's nothing wrong with it, I've yet to hear of it affecting a girl's med school career. Porn, on the other hand...

Yea, um, I think there will be times that you will be asked to do more than just dance, strip, and serve booze. Also, what Crayola said about how it can totally affect your head and self-esteem--allowing yourself to be objectified in such a way. I firmly believe it's unhealthy on a number of levels. I am certain my opinion will get a few sneers, but that doesn't mean it is utterly w/o merit. And basically, it's just a seedy environment, and things also have a way of coming out, even if you do your best to be discreet. Time and opportunity pulls things out in the wash, so to speak.
Depends on the business, depends on the girl. Some clubs are worse than others, some girls hold up better than others.

Ah, Usher, you used to be so much cleaner? What happened to the church going gramma's boy who sang classy songs like "Nice & Slow"?

Then you cheated on your baby momma, made a great song about it. That was pretty big of you actually, taking responsibility and making it a good business move too.

Now you're hooking up with strippers? I was behind the times.

Look people, times have changed. Usher says it's OK.

I haven't started recommending vertical pole dancing to patients as exercise part of a holistic approach to wellness, but I think I need to consider playing this song during my clinic visits if not in the waiting room.

Strippers make good money for a reason- ****'s risky. Most girls that fit the bill can be very easily overpowered by some of the customers. There's a propensity for drugs and prostitution, and sometimes you have infighting between your coworkers that might end up with you in some really dangerous situations.

I know a guy who bounces for money. 6'8, former college football defensive lineman, was like 280 lbs. He was going through BLET training and he told me that was some of the hardest gigs he ever worked were concerts and "ladies nights" at clubs. He told me, that in his experience, the girls gave each other more **** than any of the patrons.

I'm not going to lie, I've considered bouncing to pay the bills. But I know that I'm a liability since I'm a woman (even though I'm a broad 5'8 butch who lifts weights at least 3 times a week and is proficient in Brazilian Jiu-jistu), so that kind of squashes that.

I have to own it- I love R&B, gets me in the zone. I love dancing (for my own benefit, clarification relevant in this thread), and the solid beats help me keep good pacing when I'm at the gym. I've lost some weight just weightlifting. I'm still a lardass, but I'm working on it.

Drake is one of my faves, and sometimes he does these really nice lyrics. And sometimes he sounds like a kid with a stutter trying to rap Eminem. D:

😱. If I meet you IRL, remind me to not get on your bad side.

On a more serious note, I've always wanted to learn Jeet Kune Do. (Bruce Lee's fighting style).

I'm hard to anger, bud. I roll with the punches.

But it's hilarious because I still look chubby instead of muscular, but I do alright (particularly for a girl), It makes the dudes at the Y look like they saw a unicorn.

I've only been an outright dick once at the Y, and only after this guy made a point of talking to me like I was surely a ***** while I was waiting for him to get off the stupid bench ("Do you even know how to do this? You're just a girl, the hell do you know?" and more).

He puts 50 lbs on the bar and starts squirming under it, and puts it back up.

"I guess you'll need me to take off the weights for ya," this dickhead said to me, sneering.
"Don't bother," I growled, trading places with him after wiping down the bench.

So I took the bar that he was straining under and put up ten clean repetitions and watched his balls shrivel and recede to hide behind his kidneys.

He couldn't bench 95?

Must have been a wet noodle.

lol.

Yea I agree with medic.

Like, I dont even lift and I can bench like 120 or so which is pretty weak.

Dude, I was so confused. Because he did this:

45x5, doesn't take that much effort. Did a lot of mansplaining.
55x5, more mansplaining, did not take well to my remark of "Dude, you're lifting 55 lbs, not 55 kilos, calm your tits."
65x5, is getting a little tired, less mansplaining, still insists that he needs to "teach me some ****".
75x3, he starts shaking. I tell him, "Bro, you might want to stop, if you're shaking like that then you're done."
Attempts 95 because "[he] knows what he's doing" and about crushes his own windpipe. I grabbed the bar and put it back with little fanfare as he starts trying to blame me. 😕

"I get nervous around girls!" was his defense- I have super short hair and I was wearing a tank top and basketball shorts. Not exactly playing up the feminine wiles here.

Current basketball shorts, or Larry Bird-era basketball shorts? :eyebrow:

I could bench my own body weight once upon a time, which according to my fitness center put me in the 90th percentile for chicks.

A lot of guys can't press their own body weight or over 100 lbs unless they've been training. It doesn't take much training but you'd be surprised how weak the average couch potato is.

If you work out for like 2 weeks though, you see massive improvements which is really cool, even if you start out barely able to do a set of the bar

It's true women don't see strength gains as fast. I really had to work at it. My ex bf grew stronger faster with the same amount of lifting. Although at some point the training I did I could do 2x as many pull ups and he never trained hard enough to catch up with me there.

I would honestly wager that being able to do good bodyweight stuff is more useful than being able to lift big things. Maybe I'm biased though.

I'm not nearly that strong anymore, med school & residency atrophied me. But my increased knowledge of anatomy, pre-existing nerve and increased levels of depersonalization, I think I'm more ruthless and overall more dangerous than before.

I went from 55x5 to 90x5 within the first month, that's what makes me love it so much. And in general, cardio sucks. A lot.

Vertical pole dancing can give you a level of upper body strength and control you can't get any other way.

Superior to just lifting.

You know my struggles! Holy hell, though. Breaking half of my weight was torture. ( I'm literally obese. Trying to reverse that! )

Dude, @WedgeDawg, my fiancee's a cardio buff and she can run for literally hours. I can't do that ****.

Sometimes, late at night when I can't fall asleep, I read about weird sh** on wikipedia and see what happens. One of the things I stumbled upon was ultra long distance ocean swimming. Like people who swim miles and miles and miles in cold, open water for hours at a time (things like crossing the english channel.. by swimming). Apparently, if you swim the english channel, it takes like 7-12 hours and you lose 10 lbs due to energy consumption, which is exacerbated by cold. I don't understand how people do stuff like that. It completely amazes me.

We will have to disagree, at least re: the part that one becomes part of an actual degrading, dehumanizing objectification of people--and really, it hurts men also, and their families IMO. It's nasty, disrespectful business, period. You want to disagree, fine. But once again, I am not seeing people clamoring over feel great if their daughter was doing it.

You know how a cigar is just a cigar? Degradation and objection are simply like that--rationalizations notwithstanding. But rationalization attempts to serve its purpose in order keep to justifying something very wrong, seem A OK. People aren't objects--for sexualization or anything else. And that is really what matters most here--regardless of whether the person gets into MS or finds residencies and jobs w/o this coming up or being an issue.

People aren't play things, and those that think they are, for themselves or anyone else, I believe, need to re-think what is the value of a person and people is/are, and how this kind of thing sells them and others short.

Honestly who the hell even does this.

When I go to the gym (lol, not very much and super sparingly), everyone is usually pretty cool. There is the occasional Jackass that is screaming at the top of his lungs though. Its like we get it man, you are jacked. We can see your biceps from the entrance. No need to embarrass yourself.

A d-bag who has some serious image issues.

OP reminded me of another song, played at my aunt's wedding (I **** you not):

Haha. Sorry man. But when you're ripping 5 plates off the ground (not me), it's hard not to yell. 😛

There is some translation over to the bodyweight stuff, though (duh 😛). And there is a cap on strength that you can't exceed with just bodyweight exercises.

Which is fine- not when you're trying to antagonize someone for kicks. He did it because he wanted someone to pat his ego, and I wasn't having that when he had been spending all this time mansplaining me.

I'm not sure what my weightlifting goals are. I just want to see how good I can get. 🙂

There is some translation over to the bodyweight stuff, though (duh 😛). And there is a cap on strength that you can't exceed with just bodyweight exercises.

True, but certain exercises make it so that the cap is higher than you might think (though you're right, it's still existent).

After seeing my credit card bill from this application cycle, I have considered stripping myself! 😛 😛

But forreal, do what you gotta do to get where you want to be (legally, of course).

Shake what your momma' gave ya'

Cardio is anti-gainz brah. You might live longer but, I mean, who wants to live without being able to bench 250x5 anyway

True. This is why I show up to the gym in a wheelchair to minimize cardio. Also I never workout legs because it's not like girls are gonna look at my legs when I'm on the dance floor at the club.

I would honestly wager that being able to do good bodyweight stuff is more useful than being able to lift big things. Maybe I'm biased though.

It's difficult to train the back and legs with only upper body though.

I'd suggest that lower back strength is among the most important in health care settings -not for physicians necessarily though- because you have to lift people up, turn them around, etc, as well as stand on your feet for very long periods. Many people injure themselves. And nothing fixes that more efficiently than deadlifting.
