Wright State U Boonshoft Class of 2011 -- Official Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The bookstore has a good collection of boonshoft items (for OUchris and jj: i'm sure that I saw rear window stickers for boonshoft). The clothing items are pretty standard; tees, sweatshirts, pullovers, polos. They have a lot of non-clothing items too; engraved pen stands (for a nice desk), golf balls, mugs, picture frams, etc.

Thanks, Joshua! I knew that there had to be more. Now, I kind of wish I would have saved my money! Oh well, the polo is pretty nice.

Well Chris, I've been golfing for well over 10 years and I still wouldn't consider myself very good. The fact that you have a reliable wedge is a great place to build a solid game. I'm able to drive the ball like John Daly but my short game and putting is one of the more hideous things that you can imagine. Together we would make quite the adequate golfer, haha.

Awesome... here's to a mediocre finish in a best-ball tournament! 👍

Finally, I know that some of us have talked over PM, but using these screen names is a bit impersonal (I think some people have already given their names, but since we keep adding people to our class it may be nice to just give them again). I'm Joshua, graduated from THE Ohio State U. and I am bored out of my mind at work right now. Research downtime can be a killer.

Good idea... I think (hope) everybody already has that info on me by now, due to my unimaginative, yet appropriate/succinct, screen name.

Hey there fellow boonshofters (or boonshoftees). I was in Dayton yesterday looking at apartments and had dinner with a friend who is a 2nd year. She also gave me a quick tour of the new building, and it is quite the nice facility. Anyone make any progress toward housing? Looking for roommates? Anyone get their award statement? Is anyone else loosing their mind waiting for classes to start?

yes going crazy, polo, and no, have made no progress and received no awards....I am having fun, however, reading how we're setting up our flag football teams on the trad, non/trad division. I think non-trads are going to kick some a$$.Whoops, did I say that part out loud?

Hey everybody again...I turn around for five seconds (or two weeks, ha) and this thread zoooooooooomms.

1. Congrats although you're probably done by now, jj, with p-chem. Now kick back, and please, promptly forget everything you've just covered. I'm not sure it will be at all useful.

2. Yay for non-trads and real names (it maybe was getting a little bizarre continually referring to each other by handles. In real life when we meet, polo, however, I'm probably going to still call you "polo" in my head.) I'm Kate, I'm 27, my birthday is in the first week of school, and I'm a nonnnn-tradddy. That is to say I went to a tiny liberal arts college in NY, took serious time off, lived in Israel, tried to become a rabbi....in essence did everything to push my life towards spirituality and faith before deciding my ultimate skills and interest lay in pursuing science. Yes, I know it's weird, and I promise not to lay any bible talk on anybody. Jews don't proselytize, we just cook really well and drag you to bar mitzvah's.

3. I bought the shirt. If a cooler shirt comes out, you will never see me wearing it. I want the car decal. Actually, I want a new car.

4. I am buying the Lenovo X60 and living alone, hopefully in Centerville/Kettering/Oakwood. Near enough for my 11-yr-old car to make it to campus, but far enough away that on the weekends, IN THEORY, I can have my own community life. We shall see.

5. We must have a workout club, because I'm an elliptical/weightlifter kind of girl who also likes to run. And the cooking club. Because when it's not about fitness, FREAKISH AMOUNTS OF STUDYING AND PANIC...uh...it's about food.

See you all soon. If anyone feels like meeting in early June, pm me before the 11th or friend me on facebook, hahahahahahahhaha.

WHERE IS THE FINANCIAL AID.

JJ - You should just sport the goggles 24/7 once the year starts. Try to get a new trend going.

 i def get that all the time...and then im asked if i get paid...I WISH. I think they just stole my pic and added more fines onto my school bill...b/c that is what colleges do.

I cant believe that I just posted something yesterday and everyone is just talk talk talkin!

ok so real names...
OUChris....Chris
Polo....Joshua (can we go with Josh?)
Divine....Kate
JJ....Jessica (makes a little sense, will totally make sense when you find out my last name...in fact, some people call me 'JJ'...although not as cool as Kate calling Joshua: 'Polo'...😀)

I think i might stay outta the flag football team...mmmm, maybe.

POLO (Joshua)!! you rock, thanx for the decal link...i love it!! I will totally get one...when i get some money! hahahahaha

Oh my gosh, Kate, that sounds awesome, we should all meet! It seems like everyone is from the Columbus area...or very close to the area. Ill be back in columbus the 6th of May...so, whenever we all meet up, i will be there.

Chris, Ive been down at WSU many many times to be a part of their social scene...but mostly ...ok at all times i was an Undergrad. lol Its pretty wild...and the house parties are not that great. But, on the other hand, they have some really nice bars around the area that the older more mature crowd goes to (the grad students...lol😉) There is one place that I hear a lot of people go to: Tooties...i think that is how you spell it. But also, many go to Dayton...which is like 10 min away (8 if you drive like me). U know what? I am gonna take up both chris and josh on those first round/second round drinks...ha...u guys are stuck. (j/k, i wont hold you to it b/c it could get expensive buying for all 100 of the new students!)

kate, i cant believe you wanted to be a Rabbi...wow! I actually don't know what to say to that...can women become rabbi's? Or is that a really ignorant question?

Everyone is totally wecome to facebook me...except you type in Jessica J.
and I am under the Malone College network. I didnt' put my last name on there, so it may be a little hard to find me. also, send it with a message, b/c i dont accept people who I dont really talk to. alright sweet

everyone have a great weekend!

No, you're not!. ME TOO! And I'm thinking about a hat, but then I ask myself, can I wear blue hats? The answer appears to be a general no.

I would like a hat, as well. But you are correct; the blue one is hideous. Plus, I'm more of a fitted-hat type of guy. I gotta believe that they have other hats... because, much like the car sticker, the word/name "Boonshoft" is nowhere to be seen.

So those have to be outdated, right? I think that all new merchandise/marketing has to have the Boonshoft name... but I could be wrong.😕

It's not weird at all!

Actually, this is one of the things that I really like about WSU's tendency to accept so many non-trads. There is so much to learn from people who have had such interesting lives and may have a different perspective on things. See, I've learned something already... I had absolutely know idea what 'proselytize' means, so I had to look it up!

Now, all that said... a fair warning: you stand to learn very, very little from me! :hardy:

(Please know that I don't mean this to be slight against traditional students, at all! I'm obviously making a broad generalization, here.)

3. I bought the shirt. If a cooler shirt comes out, you will never see me wearing it. I want the car decal. Actually, I want a new car.

Yes! Kate, lemme just say that you have very, very good taste. 👍

4. I am buying the Lenovo X60 and living alone, hopefully in Centerville/Kettering/Oakwood. Near enough for my 11-yr-old car to make it to campus, but far enough away that on the weekends, IN THEORY, I can have my own community life. We shall see.

I think that's exactly what I am going to buy as well; the Lenovo X60 Tablet. Oh, and I got you beat; my car is 18 years old. 😉

5. We must have a workout club, because I'm an elliptical/weightlifter kind of girl who also likes to run. And the cooking club. Because when it's not about fitness, FREAKISH AMOUNTS OF STUDYING AND PANIC...uh...it's about food.

I'm down for the workout club. As far as the cooking club goes... well... I'll be happy to eat whatever you guys cook. I don't think that you want me in the kitchen. I've lived off cafeteria food and a george forman grill for the past 7 years of my life. 😀

See you all soon. If anyone feels like meeting in early June, pm me before the 11th or friend me on facebook, hahahahahahahhaha.

WHERE IS THE FINANCIAL AID.

Show me the money! ...OK, that was lame. Actually, the financial aid mystery is the biggest reason I keep checking in here. Well, that and the great company, obviously. I figure that you guys may hear something before I do. I was so late in the application cycle that I'm behind on everything...

Chris

I think i might stay outta the flag football team...mmmm, maybe.

Ah, come on, what fun would that be? Ya gotta play with us.. It'll be a blast! Besides, after the ropes course, what will you have to lose? 😀

Awesome! Sounds good. Thanks for the info! 🙂

You're right... buying for all 100 students would get a little pricey... But, at the very least, I'm sure we could spring for the SDN Boonshofters!

Everyone is totally wecome to facebook me...except you type in Jessica J.

I totally didn't know what it meant either!! Kate has a huge vocabulary! Ive read her blog once or twice and I was always freakin amazed at all the big words she used...if you havent read it, she is an AMAZING writer...i bet she got a T on writing on the MCAT!...as for me...i sucked at the writing and the verbal soooooo bad!

Chris...you are totally right about generalizing about me...most will learn very little from me as well!

You're all making me blush...and if it helps it took me a quick trip over to dictionary.com to remember how to spell proselytize, lol. Big words from a bear of little brain. Although I don't think any of us can really claim modesty--we're all brilliant as hell and are clearly going to revolutionize the face of medicine.

There are no ignorant questions, jj--it's not common for women to be rabbis, and when they are it's usually in the more liberal (Reform, Reconstructionist) sects of Judaism. We can hash into the specifics any time you want, but we have 4 years to talk about it🙂

Anyway, thank you for the lovely compliment to my taste, Chris, and jj, even on the third round of drinks ON ME, you ain't never gonna know my MCAT essay score. 🙂

Now I'm going to go watch ESPN and finish off the evening with the Sopranos. I'm really looking forward to meeting, AND learning from, all of you.

Sad news for those who wanted to go to Tuty's bar: it burned down last year. They're rebuilding something, but I don't know if the bar will return... I'll drive by it this week and see what's going on. At least there are plenty of bars around. I'm not much of a drinker, though. One or two, and my face is extremely flushed and I look for the nearest pillow...😴

By the way, I'm Heather. I was gone for just a little bit, and suddenly the thread exploded! It's good to see more people and that we're finally conversing.

It's funny, I went to WSU for other degrees (think last century 🙂 ), and never had any desire to buy anything that revealed my connection to the school. Now that it's the med school, however, I think I'm excited enough to show that I attend school there! I think my first purchase will be the car decal.

ya it did!! but they rebuilt it....i dont know if it is the same name, but the students still call it Tuty's. SO, its nicer inside🙂

OH MY GOSH, isnt the weather beautiful?👍

Hey guys, so I went down to Dayton this past weekend and got a great April deal for an apartment! Its in Channingway, two bedroom town house (two floors) for 649 a month! I had to take it lol......I hope to god i can afford it, but thats the price of a one bedroom apartment that close to campus anyway.....and its only for one year, too.

Facebooking sounds like a great idea. These anonymous forums can sometimes be a lil freaky (no offense). I guess I will try to find Jessica J since she put her name out there. I'm Eli so if you guys want to find me, just PM me!

I am totally sorry for rejecting you....i need to read SDN religiously!! haha ...oh wait i already do.

Don't worry, I bet my writing score is more embarassing... One of the med school interviewers that I met with said, and I quote, "Wow, you got a [blank] on writing? That's not very good... at least, not for somebody who speaks english as their first language."

Gee. Thanks, buddy. My dog just died last week... wanna bring that up, too?

Give me a week to write a paper and I can crank out a great one. Give me 30 minutes for an essay, and my perfectionist brain doesn't allow me to get past two paragraphs without scrapping the whole thing and trying to start over... again and again. ...lame. :hardy:

Good find on the housing. Man, you went from undecided to landing a rental, in one week. Good work. I need to get out there and find something!

I just sent a friend request to you... So, heads up. 👍

By the way... have you guys already received a WSU email? If so, how/when did you get it?

By the way... have you guys already received a WSU email? If so, how/when did you get it?

um yes i have, they email me when something has changed on my status. lol...have you not recieved any emails? hahahah go WSU. 😛

I am officially done with my chemistry major.😀 Unfortunetly, since i didnt study for this exam more than 1 day...i might have failed it. I think it was the first time in 4 years i took an exam and didn't know almost all of the info on the test. Im gonna say, in a way, I am getting ready for my medical school exams...bring on the C's!!!

remember everyone...C=M.D.👍

Chris, my verbal was very bad as well as my writing. I had interviewers at one school reassure me that my low score didn't matter and they didn't really focus on it...they looked at my bio/chem scores. I was relieved, but I hadnt brought up the subject...they just noticed the 1-digit verbal score...lol

They've emailed me, but always to the old email that I provided in my application info. At what stage of the game did they say, "Hey, here's your new email"?

I'm chalking all of this up to the fact that I applied/interviewed late...

Congrats on the chemistry major! My hatred for chemistry burns with the fire of a thousand suns... I couldn't stomach the additional classes that would make my chem minor a chem major: P-Chem, Differential Analysis, etc. So, I give you credit for doing it. 👍

Yea, I didn’t actually plan on getting housing this soon lol. However, since the prematriculation program starts in June, I just wanted to go down to Dayton and look at places/put my name on a couple waiting lists. Well, after hitting 10 apartments in seriously just 5 hrs (that my friends recommended) I came across channingway. It was the best price and square footage, but I needed to put a deposit down that day in order to get the special price……so I just went for it…..even though I made a final decision on wright just like 2 days beforehand.

Thanks for the facebook request Chirs. I am at work now and they block facebook so I will confirm later. Hence, I kill time on studentdoc and google

Would you recommend any of those 10? I already took off this Thursday and Friday from my day job to celebrate my birthday. I wasn't planning on going out to look at apartments, but I might do just that...

No problem. 👍 I guess I didn't say this before, but... welcome to the class! 😀

I'm actually surprised that facebook isn't blocked here at OSU. They block just about everything else.

In real life when we meet, polo, however, I'm probably going to still call you "polo" in my head.

Actually, I want a new car.

Actually, I wouldn't mind the nickname, I never was much of a fan of my given name anyway.

I totally lucked out with my car situation. I had bought a jeep like 5 years ago then sold it to my dad in order to save money on insurance (he gave me his old back-up-to-the-back-up car). Well, now he doesn't think the car is going to make it through school so he's given me my old jeep back. By far the greatest vehicle on days like today.

Please tell me your not serious about spending your birthday looking for apartments. Although, after 21 they do all kind of run together.

Good call on OSU not blocking facebook. I can't believe it either, and it's not just facebook. I was able to set my fantasy football roster, check my gmail, and listen to espnradio over the internet.

:d :d :d College Is Officially Completed!!:d :d :d :d

Congrats, do you have anything planned for that huuuuuuge amount of time between graduation and the white coat ceremony?

Drink it up for graduation, I was on the senior crawl at OSU the day before graduation rehearsal and went to pick up my cords the next day wearing my senior crawl shirt from the night before (the counselor almost didn't give me my cords, I think he thought I was trying to steal a set). Ah, the memories (or lack of).

I'm trying to catch up with everyone on facebook; I sent confirmation to chris, jessica, and kate. I'll PM you tomorrow WorkHrd, need to get everyone on the same page.

Night boonies,

Please tell me your not serious about spending your birthday looking for apartments. Although, after 21 they do all kind of run together.

Yeah, it sucks, but I didn't have anything planned, anyway... I'm actually gonna work at MyBar Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat night so, that pretty much kills everything. I'm taking off work to work 👎 ... But my birthday always runs into Cinco de Mayo so I'll find a way to celebrate both all day Saturday

Good call on OSU not blocking facebook. I can't believe it either, and it's not just facebook. I was able to set my fantasy football roster, check my gmail, and listen to espnradio over the internet.

That's friggin' hilarious, because I visit all of the same sites, constantly. 😀

Actually, when I first started working here, my favorite FF site, fantasyfootball.com, was blocked. I was so pissed. But, for whatever reason, I've been able to access it for the past couple seasons. 👍 Maybe it was the fact that the site used to be called FantasyAsylum.com... and that sounds like it could be a little... risque... for lack of a better word.

I think this year may be the first time that I don't participate in any FF leagues. It tends to be a big distraction for me. I read all of the updates and follow every player, injury, rumor, etc. It's kind of an obsession... or sickness... it's a thin line.

I also listen to espnradio at my desk ALL day. Originally, I listened to 1460thefan, but they cut off the last hour of The Herd, and quite frankly, that's unacceptable.

Would you recommend any of those 10? I

I was recommended the following places:

charter woods
enclave
stone falls (this one seemed great, but expensive)
ashton brooke
channingway
wexford
Windsor Place (They don't have single bedrooms if I remember right)
The Highlands (I didnt like this one that much)

There are definitely places cheaper than these. Apartmentguide.com is a good site to quickly browse.

Dude, don't spend your birthday apartment hunting.

Thanks for the welcome lol 👍

The Herd is easily the greatest program on the radio, I actually became an insider so I could listen to the show if I missed it. Best 10 bucks I have ever spent.
Have you tried streaming the show off of espnradio.com? It's the Bristol feed so they won't cut off the last hour. I stopped listening to 1460 when I found out they cut off the Herd to put on Spielman.

Congrats JJ!

I don't know why I chose the dancing banana, but I wanted to use it, and it seemed somewhat appropriate.

The dancing banana is always totally appropriate.

Congrats on everything, jj!!!! And are we seriously all going to refer to each other as "boonies"?? I kind of like it, but I sense a big time parody of "Goonies" coming on. I call not-Chunk in advance, even though he was the Jewish member (few people noticed that he starts saying a Hebrew prayer when the mafioso-looking Fratelli brother surprises him in the van in the woods).

By far the greatest. Dan Patrick's show is almost a let down following Colin's show.

I became an Insider for the same reason. I do stream the show off espnradio.com... and I similarly started a couple years ago when I realized that there was a third hour that I was missing... I think my work output drops precipitously from 10am to 1pm due to The Herd. 😀 Especially now that they show live video. It's not much to look at, but it is funny to watch him react to some of his more ridiculous callers.

I'm a HUGE buckeye fan, and Spielman is a legend.... but he's intolerable as a radio personality.

Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I've been checking out rent.com, apartmentguide.com, craigslist, etc... but it's hard to get an idea of which places are actually worth renting. They all have similar feedback, and the details are written by the management companies, so it's all biased. So, I appreciate your opinions...

I've also contacted a lot of the places via phone and email, but you can't really do anything without being there in person.

I really hate to dip into my vacation/comp time any more than is necessary, 'cause I'd like OSU to have to write me a big, fat check when I leave. And, I anticipated taking off for my birthday... so what the hell.

Oh yeah, I am taking them to the bank with my vacation time.

It definately seems like we have a fair amount of people in or around Columbus for at least part of the summer. I think we should plan some sort of event, any ideas? Clippers game, Arena football (might be kind of interesting), dinner and drinks in the arena district?

Sounds good to me. I've never been to an Arena game… and I haven't spent nearly enough time in the Arena District. Did you have a place in mind? As far as dinner goes, I can think of Cotter's, Mongolian BBQ, Buca, Ted's Montana Grill, O'Shaughnessy's, and Gordon Biersch. There's another little pub/restaurant on the corner next to Ted's, but they recently changed the name and I'm drawing a blank. It was Red Star Tavern. Obviously, after dinner we could drink just about anywhere…

You know, if we go out with just this SDN group, we can get off mighty cheap regarding that whole "I'll buy the first/second round" deal. …loophole.

Other ideas… nothing is coming to mind at the moment. I'll have to think about it.

Oh, and by the way, Kate: when you created the thread, thanks for not going overboard with asterisks, backslashes, underscores, yellow moons, orange stars, purple horseshoes and red balloons. Some of these class threads are just ridiculous.

It definately seems like we have a fair amount of people in or around Columbus for at least part of the summer. I think we should plan some sort of event, any ideas? Clippers game, Arena football (might be kind of interesting), dinner and drinks in the arena district?

holy crap you guys are totallyplanning every event...so go for it. you guys can do the planning🙂. all those places sound wonderful Chris, so whenever everyone is in or close to town...im game. once i go home i will prob not get on SDN or facebook as much, so you guys might have to reach me by my cell. But when its closer to meeting ill get you guys that so we can all meet up! im soooo excited! I have to work as a waitress as muirfield country club this summer...whoo hoo (sarcasm). so, ill try to get off whenever you guys plan it! :luck:

oh and i have no idea what you guys are talking about...1460, blah, blah blah, Speilman...somthing something...haha

Good call, but now I really feel like a bowl of lucky charms.

Hehehehe, you're welcome! I hadn't even looked to see just how ridiculous I COULD have made our class thread, but understatement is just so tasteful. I'm jealous you all can already start hanging out....I feel like the sole outoftowner (maybe I am!). But seriously, third round of drinks on me. Oh, and since both Chris and I are bartenders, I think our parties are going to be as classy and well-played as this thread.

I am planning on moving to dayton from cleveland mid/late june. How far away from dayton are these bars in columbus that you guys are planning on hanging out at? I would definitely like to drive up in the summer time and get everyone a round of drinks......though there seems to be a huge line to buy rounds.....so i guess round 10 is on me.

BTW: When I first heard that WSU school of medicine is being renamed to Boonshoft I thought that was somewhat of an awkward name for a med school. Any thoughts on that?

It's kind of awful, and it's the only thing people hear when you say the name. You could put anything before the BOONSHOFT, like, "Montezuma" or "Dipooray" or even "It's in Dayton, OH." and people will still scrunch up their faces and go: "Benshaft? Where's that?" I can appreciate the amount of money the family gave and how important it is..etc etc...to honor a sponsor, but you're right, Eli, it's awkward on a good day.

Hey you can totally come to columbus from WSu...its about 50 minutes if you drive like me🙂 possibly and hour if you drive a little slower. You will be able to drive up and visit as well! 🙄

Boonshoft was renamed as such because they had a HUGE donation. A philanthropist and long time supporter of WSU, named Oscar Boonshoft, donated $28.5 million to the school in 2005. He wanted WSU to be an international leader in medicine. That is why they have all those amazing renovations. So, i guess if you donate that much, you should get it renamed after you. lol👍

Well, on a good day it shouldn't take much more than an hour (hour and 15 minutes tops) to drive from Dayton to the Arena District. The only problem is that you have to drive on 70 East, which has the potential to be the worst stretch of freeway known to man. It's predominantly two lanes, chronically under construction, and is used by every freaking car traveling through the state...

Yeah, with all due respect to the Boonshoft family, I typically just refer to the school as Wright St. and leave it at that. I'm sure the folks at Northwestern (Feinberg?), USC (Keck?), Loyola (Stritch?), etc. did/do the same thing. I really don't mind the Boonshoft name, specifically... it's just a mouthful to throw another word in there. It could be the Max Power School of Medicine and I would still call it Wright St.

Good call, WSU School of Medicine it is (or Max Power, that works too).

I think all the repair projects on 70 are done with paper mache, I swear they have been fixing the same bridge outside of Springfield for 8 years.

Truffle Shuffle!!!

25!

*insert lame party favor sound effect here*

...like they use on The Herd... 'this guy knows what I'm talking about' <pointing at Joshua>

Yup. Quarter of a century... I figure this is roughly the half-way point of my life. At least, when I'm considering the years in which I still have the will to live.

But, hey, I think I get a break on my car insurance now! 👍
