You won't be attending UIC unfortunately... The Chicago campus (UIC) has been full for over a month now. I think everyone who is left is getting put on the Urbana / Rockford track.

Thats not necessarily true, there will be many people who withdraw from UIC that had the Chicago campus, some people who are accepted now will still definitely get placed in Chicago.

as i said earlier in this thread, the admissions office lady specifically told me there is still room in the chicago campus. but this may be because i was supposed to have received an invite in october so maybe i will be assigned a campus based on when i should have been interviewed rather than by when i am actually interviewing (april 10th). also, it is true that people will be withdrawing from chicago so spots will open up. it is still possible to be placed in chicago.

How are the slots for Chicago assigned as folks withdraw from UIC? Isn't it done by when they were accepted? Meaning someone who was accepted in January after Chicago filled would get a Chicago reassignment before someone was accepted in March, correct?

I believe they would have to have petitioned to be moved to Chicago. I don't think they go back to people's original placement preference card for each withdrawal in order. They will only switch you if you request it. Also once you are placed change requests are made based upon the reason for the request, therefore some places should be available to later students if Chicago students withdraw.

I believe that it is supposed to be a bit of "hit or miss" with the reassignment. Looking at last year's UIC thread on the Allo board, the general consensus seems be that you need to get lucky (ie...someone is looking at your campus reassignment right as a withdrawal comes in).

yes, this was what i understood from our student interviewers as well, although they also did mention that at this point, that luck was independent of when we got our acceptances (ie someone that just got accepted may be assigned to chicago even though someone that got accepted last month was not)

yea i got assigned to rockford and wrote a petition letter. no response.

so i just wrote them another letter yesterday withdrawing my enrollment. hopefully i'll get my $100 back soon...

yay another open spot for the people still waiting!

Hey kids- sad to say, I may be giving up hope in IL because I received an acceptance at Michigan State yesterday evening. I feel like I'm abandoning you guys🙁 but honestly, I couldn't be more excited for a change of pace and for this truly fantastic news. I'm a third time applicant (the first time I applied was four years ago- holy crap), definitely not 22, and SO EXCITED.

Good luck to the rest of you- I'll be checking in to see how you're all doing and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of you, too.:luck:

Congrats for sure, you will love MSU. I went there for undergrad and it really is a place that grows on you. :luck: and there still may be good UIC news in your future.

Thanks- I was at another big ten school for undergrad and loved it- I presume it will have the same type of environment and spirit, and I'm really really excited. If you have any advice on the area, housing, or MSU in general, I'd totally appreciate a PM🙂

Congrats, BeanerMD. Glad to hear you found a good home...

Thanks, I'm seriously beaming at work. 😀 And you guys have been a seriously strong support for me- always good advice, the venting, and now, the very happy moments. What would I do without SDN?!😍

I wish they would make a d@mn decision! I think we are headed for the alternate list...

I got the email too, for the second time...but now I can shrug and say, silly UIC, you already sent me that😉 Yesterday, it would've been....hmm, where's that bottle of liquor I keep in the bottom drawer...

congrats. im glad to hear they are still inviting people.. mind if i ask what your numbers were?

hey everyone, got a quick question. If we are accepted for the incoming school year, and we still have to complete the premed requirements, can we complete them the summer before school starts? like complete the pre-req's this summer and start this fall IF we are already accepted?? thanks a lot..

Id also be interested in knowing this.

Does anyone happen to know when UIC sends out financial packets? Has anyone received anything? My FAFSA was processed at the end of February, so I am just anxious/curious. As far a I can tell, it seems some people from the Class of 2010 thread received them at the end of March, last year. Thanks in advance for any response.

i received an estimated financial packet (containing loan offers, etc.) from them with the instructions to complete it within 10 business days. i called to tell them that i could not yet complete the form accurately (still waiting to hear from Chicago campus MD/PhD), and they said that I should just get it in as soon as possible.

I told them I wasn't yet sure if I'd be attending UIC and they said to hold off on filing it out until I make a decision. I get the impression the 10 day turnaround is more for the convenience of UIC's finaid department...

yes you can.

IF i got in i'd have to take 2 psyc classes to fill that req over the summer.

ahh, yes, makes sense (esp. considering how the person i spoke to didn't seem at all concerned WHY i couldn't send it in yet).

I called today and was told that my application had been reviewed finally, but they had declined to invite me for an interview.... Cant even believe this bull****.

Is UIC one of those schools in which you can speak to the admissions dean to find out what they felt about your application was lacking? Or can you do a very quick appeal (long shot, I know).

I don't blame you for being puzzled. I was pleasantly suprised for each interview I was given, but I have lower stats and a very tough state school (CA). You're well above the mean for UIC, even if you were an OOSer. So sorry....

I completely feel your pain but only for Rush not UIC. In-state with a 3.6 and a 34 MCAT, no interview. Oh well, I always loved UIC more.

rush didnt give me an interview either. neither did loyola

Ditto. Seriously, where was the Illinois love this year?

3.9 , 31 R, IL. resident, no interview from Rush or Loyola.

So... the a final decision has been made message is a good thing? We can be a little less stressed out?
Also, chicago is full... right? Does anyone have an opinion on Rockford? I interviewed at peoria, but i'm wondering about some insight into the rockford site.

I went to Rockford. As an alum, and someone who REALLY didn't want to end up in Rockford, I thought I'd share some observations.

1. There is no question that the match lists generated by Rockford are great. In my class 5 ended up at Mayo (4 in Rochester, 1 in Rad at Jacksonville), the next year 4 ended up in Rochester. Not bad for graduating classes of roughly 50! Some of my classmates ended up at Wash U. (OB), Stanford (IM), UCLA (OB), Rainbow Children's (Peds - Duh!), Johns Hopkins (psych), UCSF (Gen. Surg.) and a total of 11 into radiology (that's 11/48, not too shabby). The next year grads went to Harvard (anes), Cleveland Clinic (anes and IM), and UC-Irvine (Gen. Surg.) in addition to Mayo. Bottom line, come match day Rockford graduates do VERY well.

2. (To quote Daiphon, because he is 100% correct) "There are virtually no residents in Rockford. The only residency game in town is an FP residency at a hospital where medical students rarely rotate. What's the significance? Well, this turns your M3 core clerkships into de facto sub-i's.

In other words, 3 days into my 3rd year, I was running a hospital medicine service for a physician who was in his clinic, seeing patients - and running it by myself! Phone orders are great, the doc signs off by phone on the medical student's plan. Similarly when I was on surgery, I was first assist on several cases - first freaking assist! (FF note - I had more than 50 documented first assist procedures by graduation) I didn't have to bypass the fellow, the senior resident, the junior resident, the intern, the off-service rotator, and the M4 rotator... I could actually see everything, and scrubbed on almost every case my attending did. Peds, OB, and Psych were the same thing... boatloads of experience.

(FF Note - As for the "volunteer community faculty", remember that almost all of your time is spent 1 on 1 with attendings. Given the variable teaching that residents provide, these "volunteer" faculty are actually more consistent instructors than those found at most (if not all) "name brand" academic schools.)

Yeah, so you maybe need to read a little more; but the clinical didactics are fantastic... and most of us do very well on the shelf exams and step 2 (so our teaching can't be THAT bad, can it?)"

3. (Again, from Daiphon, but I heartily agree) "You start seeing your own patients in the fall of your 2nd year... this is a whole extra year of getting comfortable talking about histories, doing physicals, and developing diagnostic frameworks. (As part of the University Primary Care Clinics medical students act as physician extenders beginning in M2). Plus, it will help with the USMLE Step 2 CS (Colonic Satyr-ism) immensely."

4. Some other benefits (according to Daiphon) "are that Rockford is the "Most Affordable City in America" (Chicago Tribune, 2003 or 2004), and is 1 hour from 3 great cities - Chicago, Madison, and Milwaukee. Your car doesn't have to pass emissions anymore (so if you have a beater, don't need to replace it)... and it never takes any more than 15 minutes to get anywhere you need to be. Try that in Chicago at 8am on the Kennedy near the junction.

Ultimately, then, if you aren't self-directed and need things spoon fed for you, then Rockford probably won't do you well. But, if you like actually SEEING and TREATING patients (the reason, I hope, you're going into medical school), and want the responsibility and experience... then Rockford'll do you right. Plus, if you're worried about rockford being 100% "primary care" - take a look at the 2004 match list: 9 radiologists, 4 emergency physicians, 4 surgeons, 1 neurosurgeon, 1 ophtho, 1 derm... and most of the IM/Peds group plan to do fellowships."

(FF note: I couldn't have said it better!)

Great post, FoughtFyr and Daiphon.

I applied to UIC with hopes of Chicago and was assigned the Rockford campus. Everything you've described and I've read about the Rockford campus clinical training has impressed me.

The only thing giving me pause is Rockford itself. I know three folks who've spent time there or lived there and none had anything flattering to say about the place, other than that it's cheap. As a med student, I could probably ignore the town itself and devote myself to studies, but as I'm married, that muddies things a bit.

Thanks for the post. Rockford really looks like a great education...

FoughtFyr

nice post thank you. altho i simply interviewed at uic and haven't even been accepted yet, i hope to one day have a similar experience as you did.
