Yale Waitlist Thread 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've decided I like pre-May 15th better than post-May 15th. At least pre- we knew what we were waiting for. Now it's back to the rolling admissions game...you don't know if you'll get in and you don't know when you'll hear. Plus your head tends to hurt.

Hey everyone,

I'm on the Yale 2007 waitlist as well. Does anyone know how many people are usually on the waitlist? I know that just from this forum, there are at least 30...

amazing...

heh heh, good job 4paw. too bad babelfish wasn't more effective in helping me get through high school spanish. 😎

so, i had called the admissions on office on Monday afternoon and spoke with Mr. Silverman, who first said they could not release waitlist tiers (the group 1, 2, 3 thing), but send an email update within 48 hours, then proceeded to tell me which group I was in....it's now been 3 days, but i haven't seen any emails...anyone else?

Just called. Was told everyone would be receiving an email but because there was such a "turn around" the other day, it was going to take Mr. Silverman a few days.

Hmm, "turn around." Good sign?

Hmm-
brainstorm on turnaround -

- of people, processing the drops?
-not about number of people, but that they dropped at last day, and therefore lots of 'last minute' work?

-other things 'turnaround' can mean?

-I guess we'll hear soon enough. I've been wondering about the folks last year who got an email to call in because they had been accepted, around May 15. the bulk of the waitlist then waited for the next week to get the email update. i've been sad that i haven't gotten one of those off-the-bat accepted emails, and I'm wondering if this year was different - if they had sent out any may 15-related acceptances yet. Does turnaround mean that acceptances have been coming out? Like last year, acceptances being sent before the update email was sent... IF SO, if there is anyone on this list who has received an acceptance, could you indicate that?

Whoa does that mean the tiers are set? Also, did Mr. Sliverman tell you to send an e-mail update within 48 hours, or did you mean that they will send an e-mail update within 48 hours?

torifan, you were told what tier you're in? does that mean we can call in too?

not to be doomsday in a post but turn around may not be equivalent to turnover... maybe it means that there was a higher number of people accepting their spots than usual...

oi

sorry dble post

Hi UCLARM,

O.k. Those accepted would have likely confirmed acceptance when they received it in march...so paperwork on that would be started, perhaps. you're right, some extra paperwork may not be done until may 15, when people are less likely to drop (i.e. they've decided between multiples, and of course some may also be on waitlists elsewhere, which would change their decision). paperwork for those dropping would likely include contacting finaid, etc. as well, paperwork for people being taken off of the waitlist may also be kicking around. that's where i see your doomsday, and raise my doomsday - that there are people getting off the list as we speak, as there were last year, before we ever receive an email. And I'm not one of them. And sdn-land does not have any info on this.

Mass Hysteria, anyone? I could be into that. Maybe we could all pretend we've been accepted already - have a mass hysteria positive visualization. Except it would mess with the accuracy of the info in our thread... it would be kind of postmodern really - what is real? what is fiction? is this the original or the simulacrum of last year? ah, the hallucinatory schizophrenia of modern life. or maybe medeivel, ascetic as only the bodiless internet can be, and ecstatic, as only can happen when there's a body to breathe and transcend with. we could group-breathe visualizing being accepted, letting the wonderfulness build in our bodies - wait, that could get carn(iv)al.

So, the person who called in and not only found out their tier placement, but also mentioned somehting about 48 hours, I hope you reply.
Edit: that's torifan - torifan, that's not tori amos you're talking about, is it? tori spelling?

so i called in and veronica politely told me that they haven't sent out the email yet so i wouldn't get any information.

thanks 4paw. possibly. i'm just waiting to hear the news...

I'm just waiting too - loudly. Hey, over here, look at me! I'm waaaaaiiii-ting! Oh so patiently! Hmmm-hmm-hmm-hmm-hmm, just me, waiting.

And while I'm waiting, I have time for
🙁 😳 🙂 😀 😉 😡 😍

And some more time for

🙂 🙁 :luck:

**apparently sdn restricts doctors-to-be to ten emotions at a time, and my original 31 images prompted sdn to tell me to 'please go back and correct the problem and then continue again'.***

As a great quote goes, happiness is like a butterfly, it will come and sit on your shoulder when you're busy with something else.

Time for me to go and get busy

the limitations on emotions falls in line with the notion that the internet is allowing us to simulate reality... trying to show 10 emotions simultaneously is pretty tough... i just tried it; my coworkers gave me this look...........

so if a butterfly flaps its wings and lands on 4paw's shoulder does that mean some applicant in los angeles gets in? 😀

Ah, subjectivity!

If the butterfly is happiness and lands on 4paw's shoulders, from my vantage point, the hope is that i'm in 🙂 or mindfulness meditation has paid off, and my mood is happy no matter what.

From what I've gathered, doctors-to-be can have ten emotions in a row, and after that, they're cut off!

I just tried the simultaneous thing - lol.

Man, I hope something works for all of us.

what group are you in?

This board is MUCH tamer than the other waitlist boards. Great job and staying cool during this process!

it's because of the dao of 4paw

I dont know about cool...im getting a little anxious to hear back about my chances :scared:

any news?

Complete silence on the high waitlist. Well, at least this little part of it. Anyone else?

ummmmmmm. if the high priority is not moving, how does that give hope to reg waitlist? maybe a lot of people are accepting their offers this year?

No, it's actually because they accepted more people this year. Last year they accepted 174 right off the bat and had about 20 people on the high priority waitlist. This year they accepted what would have been the high waitlisters last year right off the bat for a total of 196 people. The high waitlisters this year are sorta the equivalent to tier 1 people last year. Sorry to break the news, but statistically speaking there will be a lot less people that will get in from the waitlist this year 🙁

Man, that's really f'in bad news, dammit. We're all screwed. I guess I can pretty much stop watching this thread....thanks for the info tho...

Edit: sorry about the negative attitude...I guess I was just pissed...considering the new information, and that I'm not on the high waitlist...I feel like the chances of getting in is very unlikely...

adcom member

edit: i should also add that a lot of the med students know this too. It's not like it is a big secret or anything.

I was told at second-look weekend that they accepted 199 students off the bat this year. Last year they accepted a record-high 240 to fill the class of 100. I've met a ton of accepted people who have chosen to go to other top schools, however, so don't lose hope! You never know what the final number might be this year, so it's best not to speculate (obviously easier said than done). Best of luck to you all!

I agree, you shouldn't lost hope, but I thought it would be helpful for people to know realistically what their chances are like, especially when they try to compare this year's waitlist with last years. Maybe the adcom i spoke with got the wrong number 199 vs. 196 or i remembered it wrong, but numerous people said that they accepted about 20 people more this year, the people that they would have called high priority waitlisters last year. That info is definitely not speculation, but I think everyone will have a better sense of what is going on once we get some info from Silverman.

I went to the second look and I am pretty sure that 199 initial acceptances is correct information (a first year student told me the same thing). Does anyone know how many people are on the High WL?

I guess I just wanted to be the first one to post that the email came out!!!!!!!!!

You can call in Tue/Wed/Thurs 1:30-3:30 EDT!!! and find out which tier you are in....haha time for the 'Dial a Tier' Games to begin!!!

Except he says we have to wait 'till the 29th of May right to even start calling?

...

so much waiting, oh well...I've waited this long, I can wait another week. Hehe.

*tries to comfort his fast-beating heart after receiving an e-mail titled "Yale Waiting List Update"*

Except he says we have to wait 'till the 29th of May right to even start calling?

Yeah, that was my favorite part, especially considering the closing, "For our part, we will do everything we can to push things along and minimize this period of uncertainty for you"... 😎

so there's a chance that you high wl's will call in and be accepted right then... does anyone know if this year has had more or less original acceptees taking their spots?

not to cause more confusion, but as I remember I got offered a spot off the waitlist last year several days before it was my time to call in and find out my wait list status, so there may be movement before you are suposed to call. Deep breath everyone, it's going to be okay.

jbar, you have just increased the net anxiety in the US by 0.01%. Thank you 😎

Jbar's post isn't all that surprising, is it? I think jbar's experience corresponds to the 5/15ish calls from last year, which didn't happen this year - so I don't think we should be expecting anything, especially given the posts asserting that they accepted more people the first time around this year than they did last year.

I'm personally hoping that the high WL's call and get accepted, giving the rest of us a shot at tier 1..... that seems the best case scenario right now. Otherwise, they're tier 1 this year, and we don't have much of a chance.

Sorry for the tone of this post - I'm a little depressed by the lack of waitlist movement for schools I'm interested in this year - last year's threads unrealistically built up my expectations. 👎

*sigh*

Random trivia: The "lux" in "lux et veritas" was to distinguish Yale from the heathens over at Harvard....

my bad. But I have my fingers crossed for you guys.

no worries, i wasn't serious 🙂
Good luck to high waitlisters. let us know if you get a pre-Tuesday phone call.

babel, I feel like we're on a lot of the same waitlists. Hang in there...lots of places almost like you! No, seriously, I hope something good comes through...I'm pulling for you 🙂

And to make this a little on topic, does anyone else wish we could get our tiers before filling out finaid? I am so tired of finaid and I really don't want to fill out all their forms to find out I'm in tier 3.

I thought that there was a May 1st deadline on finaid applications, but the e-mail said that you should still apply. Can anyone explain?

Also, anyone know how many people are on the high WL?

Also, anyone know how many people are on the high WL?

I highly doubt that anyone knows how many people there are on the high WL. Last year there were about 20, but since they accepted more people this year, who knows... 😕

I would also guess from past years there are about 20 on the high waitlist. I know of at least one person that withdrew his spot on the high WL. Additionally, in the e-mail that went out last week, Mr. Silverman said they've already been able to make a few more offers of admission. I would assume those were all high WLers, whittling down that number even further.

Nyx maybe you guys got a different e-mail than us regular waitlisters? My e-mail didn't say anything about anyone being accepted off the list already...
