Lake Erie - Bradenton (LECOM-Bradenton) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did anyone that got a secondary get it without Mcat?

This school only has a 40% acceptance post interview rate? That stinks :(

According to the old thread (if I read it correctly) yes. I believe everyone else gets "waitlisted".

Coming up with the acceptance rate based on old threads isn't really the best idea considering not everyone who interviews and gets accepted posts about it on SDN.

Yeah you're right angldrps. Feel lucky getting an interview so soon though! Would b great to just get into medical school so early.

What are people with IIs considering for travel--that is, are people flying into Tampa and renting a car (drive to Bradenton is an hour) or flying into Sarasota and getting a cab/shuttle/etc to a close hotel?

I'm looking to do what's cheapest, but I have no idea what'll cost more (although I'm under 25 so I already know renting a car in Florida will be more expensive for me than for people 25+).

I haven't been invited for an interview, but my expenses will be as follows:

~500 for a round trip ticket (from CA)
~50 for one night at a motel
~50 for car rental

total will be 600 +/- 100

That's why i prefer to get first interview invites from schools that are within a driving distance from where I live (Western, TouroNV, TouroCA, AZCOM, and SOMA).

I'm pretty close by. As my schedule allows I may be able to help out. PM me if you need it! Def keep me in mind if you get here and have an emergency.

Flying into the Tampa airport is usually cheaper than the one in Sarasota. I had a reservation for a rental car (Hertz) at Tampa that I drove over to Bradenton, where I stayed at a cheap hotel, the night before my interview. I used orbitz to find the best deals on flights/car/hotel. I booked all three together on orbitz and got a really good deal. Drove to school in the morning and then drove straight back to Tampa airport after the interview day ended. I am from CA so my total expense was easily >$600.

The one thing I wish I would have done when I was down there and something I would recommend to you guys traveling to Fl from OOS is to drive around the neighborhood and check out some of the apartment complexes where most students live. This will be very helpful if you decide to go to this school and are trying to figure out which apartment to put down a deposit for. I ended up picking a place simply based on word of mouth and will only get to check out my apt. when I am moving in.

I am from CA too. Get ready to pay around this much for a lot of your OOS interviews. If you also applied to NOVA, then try to see if you can schedule interviews for LECOM and NOVA around the same time to save yourself some $$. This is hard to do but some people managed to do this last cycle.

I didn't get the secondary app yet, should I give them a call? The one I got mentioned my application was processing and I should hear back from them within a couple of weeks.

I got an email today about they recieved my app and it was put on hold till my Mcat score would be in. Did anyone else get a secondary without a Mcat?

I still don't have anything under the Letters and Credits section either, so you're not alone Congo!

How many students do they usually interview per date? Should I expect a group size of 10 or so on the 22nd?

when I interviewed, each group was composed of 6 interviewees.

Awesome. Hope to meet some SDNers in 2 weeks!

It will be interesting to put a screen name with a face. I guess I will see you guys on the 16th.

I wonder if the groups will be larger this year?? Just cause there seems to be 4-6 of us for 8/16 already in this thread and I'm sure a number of non-SDN people will be interviewing too...

Yes, you can submit your Lecom-B secondary without the email invite. That's what I did.

I'm interviewing 7/22. Has anyone booked their stay at Holiday Inn? Are people taking a taxi from hotel to campus or renting a car (for the non locals).
I'm from NY

Based on SDN, 7/22 is the earliest interview so definitely feel special!

Mine is somewhere in August, but most people use a taxi. I will definitely be using a taxi.

Hey I have an interview invite on 7/22 also and will be staying at the holiday inn express. Let me know if you want to get a taxi together to save money?

There are multiple groups of interviewees on each interview day, so there would definitely be more than 4-6 interviewees on your interview day. Each group is interviewed by a different pair of interviewers in separate rooms. I don't remember exactly but there were about 4-5 groups when I interviewed. One of the first things on the agenda is being given a sheet of paper with the names of fellow interviewees in your group and the names of your interviewers. Shortly after, each group gets escorted to a different room where the interviewers are already waiting for the the group they would be interviewing. I highly doubt they would increase group sizes considering it was hard enough to sell yourself in groups of 6.

You guys should check out last cycle's thread. Tons of info there about specifics of the interview day.

That's nice!!

Wow!! Suppose I will be meeting some SDNers in person on 8/16 then. :)

Wow, 6 people an interview? That's interesting.

Err...not to be a buzzkill but interviewing alongside other people isn't much to be excited about. Most of us from last cycle preferred one to one interviews because in group interviews it is much harder to say everything you would like to, you can easily get intimidated by other people's answers, have a fellow interviewee disagree with what you are saying, have some people who hog up most of the time, etc. I am not saying this to scare you guys but just giving you a heads up so you are not caught off guard by anything. On the other hand, there were people who absolutely loved their group interview because they ended up in a group where everyone just had great chemistry which led to some great discussions.

My theory as to why LECOM-B doesn't have a high acceptance rate post interview as some other schools is because the group interview setup makes it easy for some people to shine while leaving others struggling to make themselves stand out.

Taxis end up costing way too much. I ran the numbers and renting a car was definitely the cheaper option. The drive from Tampa airport to Bradenton can easily be 1 hour . Most people at my interviews used a rental car.

Group interview for PBL makes sense as they (LECOM) need to know how you are in a group setting. I don't think they are looking for the person that shines or hogs the time more than they are looking to make sure you can cope with the group dynamic. At least that is my game without experiencing the interview yet.

Hertz always has promos that let's you get rid of the age differential fee. I can also combine that with a AAA discount and I get a pretty good deal.

See I had no clue LECOM-B did group interviews before you said that; I haven't researched their interview process yet and I was assuming when someone said 6 people per interview they meant literally only 6 people were doing an interview at LECOM-B per date--I didn't realize they meant 6 people per interview during the actual interview with admissions members. Thank you for the info!

I actually have done other (non-medical school) group interviews (not a lot, but I've done some at least), so I'm a bit familiar with the process. I agree with your points on the downsides to the process, however--I will tailor my interview practice and expectations accordingly.

I agree completely, although I too have not gone through it yet.

Taxis end up costing way too much. I ran the numbers and renting a car was definitely the cheaper option. The drive from Tampa airport to Bradenton can easily be 1 hour . Most people at my interviews used a rental car.

See my thing at the moment is that flights into Sarasota and Tampa from where I'm coming from are within $30 of each other (flying into Tampa being cheaper) and I know I'll spend more than $30 on a rental car for two days (plus will have to deal with the one hour drive both ways) if I take the Tampa flight option. So at the moment I'm thinking of flying into Sarasota, getting a hotel with a free shuttle to/from the airport, and just getting a 20-30 min cab ride to the school from my hotel.

How much were cabs that it was cheaper to get a rental car? Maybe I'm under-estimating how much they cost. I looked up Tampa rental cars and most cars were $28/day without all the extra fees and taxes--and considering also I'm under 25, they'll be sure to jack up the final total (I rented a car with friends in Miami in January and came across this)...it just seems like I'll probably be paying more than $70 for a rental car, and I would think I could get a cab to/from the school for less than that.

....just looked it up, for those of you also under 25 like me, it'll be minimum $27 per day surcharge to rent a car (the car agency I used as an example: budget). That's a minimum $54 extra, plus the ~$28/day minimum to rent...I'm looking at a minimum $110 to rent a car from Tampa, plus gas and $380-400 round-trip flights.

A cab from a Bradenton hotel sounds cheaper to me. If the flights into Sarasota were way more expensive than the Tampa flights I might think differently. This is all home location dependent, though. If you can't fly into Sarasota I totally agree with renting a car from Tampa.

yes, thats definitely why they do group interviews. They want to make sure you are a good fit for PBL. Having said that, my interview group barely had any interaction among the interviewees as we all just took turns to gave our answers to the questions thrown out by the interviewers. So, its hard for me to say how they go about figuring out who is capable of handling PBL and who isn't. I am sure the interviewers have some sort of a method to figure this out. You definitely want to stand out in some way from the people you are interviewing with in one way or another to leave a positive impression on your interviewers. Just remember the basic rules of being in a group setting: don't speak over others, be assertive enough to speak up, argue with others only if you strongly believe in what you are saying and not just to hog time, give everyone a chance to speak, etc

I used one of those promos. highly recommend them.

But I'm 23, would they still rent a car to me?

You will be able to rent but with an added fee. Look on sites like priceline, orbitz, kayak to find some really good deals. As someone else mentioned, its cheaper to rent a car if you are flying into Tampa Airport. If you are flying into the one in Sarasota, then a taxi might be a better option.

I actually called local taxi companies and asked them the estimated fare and thats how I decided that it would be significantly cheaper to rent instead since I was flying into Tampa. This site is pretty good for that too http://www.taxifarefinder.com/. According to this website, it costs about $125 just for one way taxi trip from Tampa to Bradenton. Also, you can definitely find much cheaper rates than $110 for car rental if you shop around on different travel websites.

I think I'm going to book the Holiday Inn for my interview. Did you get the LECOM rate online?

Ah okay. If I fly into Tampa I definitely will rent a car; gonna check the flights again tomorrow and see what option's cheapest--whether the flight will be cheap enough to make up for the rental car expense. I will also check some websites and see if I can find a deal to offset the age surcharge.

Just wary because a rental car cost way more than I expected last time; just want to do the cheapest travel route. This would be easier if I lived in Florida, haha.

Yep!

I'll drive to my girlfriends parents place Sunday night and drive the 30 minutes to LECOM Monday morning. Drive home that evening and back to work on Tuesday

I cannot tell you how jealous I am. :p

However, I did a pretty good job with the rest of my schools in terms of driving distance--besides three east cost schools and two in Florida, they are reasonable drives.

I applied to a few left coast schools, so I will be in your shoes if I get an interview out there.

So under the "Required Letters and Credits" tab, it is saying its not showing anything. Should it be showing my courses? Was there a place to enter courses on the secondary?

Submitted 7/2

LECOM-B did not even look at app yet they still are not in the required letters and credits. WTF.

I really think my PHP LOR was horrible. I had what I though were strong stats.
3.7 Overall GPA, 3.6 sciGPA 24 MCAT ( 8/8/8) 1,000s of clinical experiences as a volunteer, CNA and MA. 100s of non-medical volunteer hours that were meaningful ( Mentoring, etc) plus I am a Black female FL resident.

From what it looks like from last year you interview with being based on last name in alphabetical order. Fellow 8/16 group, would your last names happen to be in the first fourth of the alphabet?

Interesting--so random groups rather than specific grouping based on apps. No, sorry. :( I'm quite a bit further down the alphabet.
