Liberty University (LUCOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats turkey!!! my link for scheduling the interview seems to be broken, let me know if yours is too
Do you know what day you're thinking of going? I might go on the 11th just so I can get my result sooner.

Congrats everyone!!!! You're making it in this impossible application world. Ummm I would go the 11th if possible but as of now I'm thinking the 25th cuz it works best with my current job.

I didn't get the second email with the link to schedule my interview. I might just email Mr. Ousley. I am thinking the 11th, I am too pumped to wait!:clap:

Thanks. I was trying to figure out if they gave interviews without LORs. My committee is holding my letters hostage. until end of August.
thats awful I'm really sorry. you need to go liam neeson on them

are we supposed to receive an email once our file is complete?

The school will interview you without your LORs and without having finished your last college semester (or post bacc) however, you won't know whether you are accepted or not until your LORs are submitted.

To all of you who got an ii, congrats!!!! This school is amazing and soon you'll realize why. My advice to all who are getting ii is to know your file in and out. Most of the interview questions come from your file. If you lied or BS in your personal statement, please make sure you don't make an ass of yourself. The first two questions are why medicine and why DO. The rest is all about you.

You will meet with two professors: a clinician and an academic one. You won't know which will interview you first until that morning. Make sure you keep your answer concise an use the 30 minutes to your advantage; take control of the interview as your answers will dictate the direction of the interview.

Make sure you also look into your interviewers. LUCOM has a profile for each professor. Get to know their bio. Speak to them about your expectations and how that professor will fit into your decision of going to LUCOM.

As Dean Martin will tell you in the interview, it is your fault if you go home without asking all of your questions.

If you want to impress the faculty, you will have more than enough time to do it during the lunch hour. Please do not seem too eager or desperate. During the lunch hour, this kid was obviously annoying the faculty member who politely excuse himself and left. Be sincere and people will notice.

Good luck to all of you and remember to feel good about getting an ii. Last year only ~500 students got an ii and about ~200 got the acceptance call from the Dean. Oh yeah, the Dean himself calls you to to let you know you have been accepted. I hope this is the same for you guys.

if anyone has a Q, shoot me a message. I'm more than glad to help!

Hmm... Anyone else having issues with the scheduler? It lets me pick a date, but when I try to submit, an error box shows up... Planning to call tomorrow to figure it out though.

Can anyone post the secondary prompts? Still haven't heard even a primary acknowledgement from them but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and planning ahead.

What is your personal philosophy on the practice of medicine and explain how you feel that you will advance the mission and vision of Liberty University and it's College of Osteopathic Medicine? (500 words or less)

The typo isn't mine. It's from Liberty.

Hi Guys! Any one have some insight or opinion on the campus? Thanks :)

Hi Guys! Any one have some insight or opinion on the campus? Thanks :)

The campus is an amazing state-of-the-art campus. The beauty about a brand new campus is of course, how new everything is. From the smell of the rugs, the new anatomy lab and OMM lab, the two huge auditorium classrooms, study halls, wireless campus and the amount of cadavers for each student, the COM has done its job trying to accommodate each student for his/her success. It is to the COM's advantage for all of the students to stay happy and do really well on their steps.

I came from a state college with one of the largest students pop in the country. Our Micro class was the second largest in the nation after UCLA's. There were a few spots you can call your own to study on campus. Here at LUCOM, it seems there is enough space for all of 162 students to study comfortably. Instead of waiting for erase boards on study rooms, you can write notes all over the walls if you need to and take a pic with your phone. The only bad thing about the campus is its physical location. The COM sits on a hill so walking/running or biking can be tricky at times.

However, the best thing about the COM in my opinion is the staff. For me, this the main reasons why I considered LUCOM as my top choice.

You can check out the COM on their live cams at:

Hope this helps.

hey guys, I submitted my secondary on july 15th with all the material but never got a confirmation email. did you guys get a confirmation email when you submitted your material? is there a way for me to check the status of my applications? thanks

Thanks :) appreciate you providing info for us. How about the surrounding area? Additionally, do you have any other advice for potential applicants or insight? I know they haven't started classes yet but, from the looks of it, they might be off to a great start.

Any idea on hospital affiliations?

Thanks again guys!

Try giving them a call! They're easy to engage. But they should give a confirmation in relation to payment (after the fee has been paid.)

Hey guys,

I gave incorrect info in my last post. LORs have to be in before the COM gives you an ii.

To papoosh, I'm not aware if the system change or if there is a way to check if your secondary is in. From what I remember, the committee meets on Fridays and if your secondary is in, the adcoms should review it within two weeks. If you don't hear from the school, you can always call Mrs. Jacky Mendez. She'll will be able to help you with your file. Please remember to be polite and courteous when calling.

To NobleGas, the hospital affiliations are listed on their webpage. Here's the link: http://www.liberty.edu/lucom/index.cfm?PID=28252
from the 2018 class, about 80 or so students are to rotate in the Lynchburg area. The rest of the class will do so in annexed cities. This was the info they gave last year. This year might be different but this is a good indication of Rotations for the future.

Good luck and congrats to all of you who received an ii. For those who have not, hang in there and soon you'll hear the good news.

Cheers.

Congrats on interviews everyone! Make sure to post your stats in the "Official Interview Invite Thread 2014-2015 Cycle" in the Pre-Medical Osteopathic forum so we can keep track of the schools giving out invites!

Is the requirement for a DO LOR is a hard requirement? Idk if I'll get one soon :(

This is a very strict requirement. No ii will be granted to those without it. If you send your file without it, make sure to give someone a call to let them know you are uploading/mailing your LOR as soon as you can. Your file will not be review by the adcoms until all parts are completed. Good luck!

Did anyone else think LUCOM secondary app online was the glitchy-est thing ever? I finished submitting it but I got so many error messages on the way lol. so many times I had to start over....

Got the interview info email! Can't believe it's only one week away.
People can say what they want, but I'm excited for the interview. If LUCOM is the only school that accepts me, then they will be represented by a great doctor in the future.

What's the deal with this school as far as non-christian/non-religious people? I'd hate to go to a school where I feel like I'm in the minority when it comes to this, it'd make for an awkward four years. Thinking about adding this school but don't want to be judged for not being christian.

You're not going to be judged- even if you believed aliens as a religion. Give them a chance, hopefully they give you one, then see how it works

Abstract
Character (qualities that determine one’s response to events regardless of circumstances) determines success and is important because of powerful influences physicians have on patients’ health and well-being. Medical education should endorse good character, e.g. compassion, empathy, discernment, generosity, honor, justice, self-control, truthfulness and virtue. Important for patient care, we designed a curriculum to promote character in future physicians. Curricular examples: Neurophysiology: Pornography addiction can destroy marriages, families and culture. Its addiction is taught to encourage a physician’s compassion and tofacilitate physician-patient education of self-control and virtue. Cardiovascular: Prolonged stress, unresolved anger and CRH release with cardiovascular sequelae, lead to major health problems. Attentiveness and sensitivity are taught to recognize and treat stress preventatively, not only in disease. GI/Nutrition: Responsibility and self-control in diet, fitness, andwellness are promoted in students, as good examples for future patients. Anatomical Sciences: Unselfishness and self-control are important in a patient for healthy sexual relationships. Female reproductive tracts allow for pathology (sperm proteins accessing the bloodstream can drag endometrial cells into the Pouch of Douglas) if honor doesn’t restrain intercourse during menstruation.

What do you expect from a Christian school?
They will still teach a fundamental curriculum like any other medical school has to, only they may have some undertone in how they go about it. If you're into that, then you can continue to incorporate it into your work as a physician, and if you're not, then don't. There's enough negativity toward this school in this thread, last year's thread, and even on the main DO forum page. You're so concerned about them shoving their beliefs in our faces, yet everyone's spreading nothing but bad news about them. We get it. You guys don't like the school. Don't apply.
It doesn't matter so much what school you go to as what you do with your degree after you're done there.

Wasn't my intent to start a debate, I am interested in the school because I'm close to the area but you have to understand the concern. America is the most diverse country when you consider race and religion and it slightly concerned me when I saw the mission statement so I thought I'd get current student input.

I also disagree with the bolded.

Cool story bro. Each school has different missions and values. There hasn't been one hint of evidence of them forcing individuals to convert. Quit promoting negative views when none of it is justified, troll.

I'm going to apply and hopefully find out for myself, that's probably the best way to go about this.

Maybe I shouldn't have taken a hostile approach with the other user, but it's getting a little old. I didn't quote you, and I can tell you were just asking an honest question, so no harm done. It is a diverse country, and they don't force you to go to service (although it's recommended), but they ARE a Christian school. Last year's thread has a lot of helpful information.

I think the bold is true. My father went to a really poor school in Cuba where they made you do a lot worse than sit down for a prayer. I'm obviously a little biased, but I think he's a great doctor. He's the Chairman of Family Medicine at his hospital and has 4 hour long lines during office hours every week. He must've done something right. I've also shadowed very intelligent, successful doctors that have told me the same. I see it like this:
A good guitarist with a bad guitar will always sound better than a bad guitarist with a good guitar.

Yeah I guess I should've prefaced that by saying it really depends on what you want to go into

Has anyone else submitted a secondary and then received an email back saying thanks for applying to the 2014-2015 cycle, but they had already filled all of the spots for the class of 2018? It went on to say to apply for the class of 2019...isn't that the 2014-2015 cycle? I tried calling, emailing, and haven't heard anything back about what happened to my secondary.

II waiting in my inbox this morning! I share Turk's view on this school. Looking forward to the interview.

you submitted your secondary and got invited for interview in the same day? I am submitting my secondary tomorrow. Should I expect to hear back that quickly?

If there are any dudes who are interviewing on August 25 and would like to split a hotel room, PM me. Also, it would be great for confidence and ease the transition to already know someone at the interview. We could also go check out the town and what not.

P.S. - I'm not a serial killer who applied to medical schools just to meet potential victims.

That's the first thing a serial killer would say.
I would, but I'm scheduled for the 11th. :/ but that's a great plan.

Unless you want/need to see the city of Lynchburg, most hotels have a shuttle system to the school. If you need to rent a car, there are two rental places within the airport. Lynchburg has made it very easy to accommodate all of the interviewers going to LUCOM. As far as hotels, I stayed in Super 8. It is an old building (70s) but it has everything you need to prep yourself for the interview (wireless, breakfast, etc). Super 8 however, does not provide a shuttle for the school.

Hope this helps.

Any currently accepted Liberty students around? I would love to ask questions about your impression of the school thus far. I realize you haven't started classes or anything.
Hey! Just started classes Monday. I'd love to answer any of your questions.

Feels SO good to be in school and out of the app cycle! Those of you interviewing on the 11th-18th might not meet any of us students because our first massive exam is right around the corner!! Keep in mind that they are specifically looking for people with a servant's heart. Demonstrate your passion for people in your ECs, PS, and ii. You'll do just fine. :) good luck!
