Here's a little something to make you all feel better about your upcoming interviews RIGHT NOW.

--- --- ---

So today was my first interview and I was a little jittery because I hadn't slept well and had (maybe) too much coffee.

The first interviewer I had today -- her name hadn't been written down anywhere. Nowhere - not on any itinerary or anything.

I wasn't introduced to her ahead of time. I just had to walk in and meet her and have my interview.

Unfortunately, I didn't catch what she said her last name was...she sort of mumbled it and then started talking really fast and asking lots of questions that I tried to keep up with.

And so I kept staring at her white coat which just said "[Jill]*" but then her last name was all folded over.

I finished the interview without needing to know her last name (so I thought I was in the clear).

I breathe a sigh of relief and get out of the office only to be ushered in to my next interview.

And the first question the next interviewer asks is "So who did you have your previous interview with?"

And I freeze.

I'm about to look like an idiot because I don't know this lady's last name.

So I took a chance and said, "I might mispronounce the last name, but her first name is [Jill]"

And he looks at me for just a moment, confused.

And THEN he looks at me in surprise and says "[Jill] Howard?"

Yes, yes, it was [Jill] Howard.

With the unpronounceable last name "Howard", apparently.

So yeah, I looked like an idiot.

--- --- ---

The moral of the story is don't be afraid to just ask your interviewer if you didn't catch their last name.

Based on threads from last year, there were no new interview invites in September? I am hoping for a second wave of interviews in early sept especially when programs start getting cancellations.
Any insights?

Does it look poorly if I move a scheduled interview date to accommodate another interview? Otherwise, I have to wait list a program I want to interview at.

Same here, except Drexel which I just updated. It is also possible that they have already given out interviews to applicants not in the forum

I am in a similar situation..
What did you do?

I am waiting to hear back also from some of the same schools you mention. I am an AMG with a response rate of about 25%. Last year about this time there was a "rain shower" of acceptances and rejections. Would this have happened already by now this year? Also, does the fact that programs did not start downloading applications until a week after they were uploaded have any effect on candidate selection for interviews -- or whether or not they bother to respond at all? Thx.

It's generally not a big deal if you give the program advanced notice (probably a few weeks at least) and are polite about it. Some places might not be able to reschedule you if their other days are all full so at that point you might just need to decide where you would prefer to interview at.

Just waitlisted....I didn't want to send the message to places I had already scheduled that I didn't prefer them. I think its better to select a date and stick with it or cancel...don't ask programs to move their date. You'll have to decide if you would rather wait list or cancel a prior interview based on your number of interviews and preference.

Several of these places have already sent invites and declines, with the exception of Mayo I believe. I think 90% have sent invites and the last few will trickle in this first week. Last year, I heard it dropped off after September 10th or so, FWIW

Thank you.. They have me on a waiting list. I guess I have to follow up and keep showing interest.

Hi, I would personally cancel MUSC and Tufts. Unless you have geographical preferences.

Tufts and Monte. Indiana is quite strong in mal. heme from what I hear and they give adequate help to their fellows with research (my friend is a fellow there now).

Track. The word is track.

But to actually answer your question, it's typically a prolonged, single board track that is most often entered as a PGY3 (after 2 years of IM). Also known as the ABIM Research Pathway.

In this particular case, since you don't even know what the research track is, I suspect this is not the case for you. I suspect it's a 4 year fellowship option that will get you a single board eligibility and a few publications if you do it right.

Hi guys,
Need to cancel one of these: UC Irvine vs MCW and I need help. I am interested in academics and malignant heme. Any help is appreciated!!

It depends on your future goals but UCI has been trying to up it's game lately.

It's in a more crowded market (City of Hope, USC and UCLA are all bigger names on the cancer front) than MCW. But your COL in Milwaukee will be a joke compared to SoCal.

I have only interviewed at a few of these places so far, but would like to solicit other opinions on my assessment of these programs based on my pre-interview digging/research/others' input. Like the majority of us, I am interested in malignant heme, but do not have a lot of dedicated exposure to other areas of our prospective careers. Originally from NJ, but no geographical preference specifically (although I clearly did the northeast corridor application-wise). Any and all input is appreciated, as less than 24 hours direct experience with each program often cannot trump past and perhaps more lengthy experience(s).

You have more than enough interviews and can easily cancel 3 or 4 of them. Definitely don't bother with Brown if you're into malignant heme.

And if I had a nickel for every incoming fellow who said they wanted to do leukemia/BMT and then ran screaming from their first inpatient heme mal month, I could have retired before finishing my fellowship.

And if I had a nickel for every incoming fellow who said they wanted to do leukemia/BMT and then ran screaming from their first inpatient heme mal month, I could have retired before finishing my fellowship.

This.
It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that 4 out of every 5 applicants I sit with at interview dinners are "interested" in some form of academic malignant hem/BMT. Looking at the fellows who graduated in the past 3 years (and this is from an academic place with lots of malignant hem/BMT), I can think of 1-2 max who actually went on to do academic malignant hem. So give yourself a break and unless you've already published 20 papers or so in BMT stuff and you're hooked up with a mentor and know exactly where you're going, it's OK to say "I'm undecided yet, I want to experience the full spectrum first-hand and then decide". Nobody's gonna fault you for that and I personally respect it more than looking like a hard core transplanter when your whole experience is 2 weeks elective as a resident.

Hello guys,

I am looking to cancel 2 interviews. Which one of these should I cancel?
I want to go into malignant heme, academics, want more research time and clinical research opportunities.

Tufts
MUSC
Indiana
Motefiore Albert Einstein
U Wisconsin
USC (Keck)

dont cancel USC if youre interested in malignant heme and academics.

I have my first interview coming up this Friday. Any ideas or suggestions of what should I prepare about. I do have research experience on my CV and was also a presenter at this year's ASCO's meeting but currently I am not actively involved in any project. I am sure this question will be asked about tell me about if you are actively pursuing any project, how should I answer this ? Besides research what are the topics would they be mostly interested in talking about ?
Also to all the IMG's on this forum, how has been this season so far. I belong to a community program which I think is a big red flag on my CV and have any only received 5 invites. How are others doing on this forum. Thanks .

Hello, everyone: It has been quiet for one week. Any new inform?

Hi guys,
Need to cancel one of these: UC Irvine vs MCW and I need help. I am interested in academics and malignant heme. Any help is appreciated!!

MCW is right next door to the CIBMTR - which fellows have access to. I don't know how UCI can top that.

I interviewed last year. Here is my impression of interview days

Very different from residency, very laid back and you are sort of a "big deal". You will meet a lot of people - It was always 3-6 faculty members. Most are chill and literally just chat about anything for 20 mins and then ask you to ask stuff - that's when you ask about [insert program's strength]. They would repeat what the program leadership has been hammering all day long. You can also ask specific questions about certain situations and they would usually have one reference about a stellar fellow who had 4 kids during fellowship and still managed to get an oral presentation at ASCO or something "successful" of that sort [the example is an exaggeration]. There's always one interviewer who wants to bust your chops. They drill you but will stop when you get uncomfortable. I think the point is seeing how you react. Go with the flow and be honest. Sometimes, the approach is about personal achievements and sometimes it is about your CV and sometimes about your future. For me, some went very well and some didn't. What you want to keep in mind is that the reason it doesn't go well is because you do not belong in that program. You would not be able to grow in an environment where you are uncomfortable.

That being said, I got various signals (ranging between subtle to clear) from places I interviewed at during interview day that they were either *very* interested or *not interested* giving off a sense that that was almost predetermined.

I can talk about this for hours but I think what you need to know is that the interview day is mostly to get to know you. Nothing really to prepare. You should know your research if you are asked about it. But you can't prepare a personality.

Good luck.
