Because I know everyone likes dates and documentation. TCOM just e-mailed me with instructions on how to access their portal to complete the secondary. I submitted my TMDSAS application on 5/6. Got an e-mail later at noon on 5/7 saying that they were sending it off to TCOM. I'm still waiting on one LOR to be uploaded to interfolio and one transcript to be received by TMDSAS. I'll come back with an edit to give some details about the secondary unless someone beats me to it. Anyone else get any attention from TCOM or am I just the odd duck? Good luck guys, this is my top choice so I hope I can impress them.

Edit: So far, prompts look the same as last year.
1) In your own words, explain the concept of osteopathic medicine as you understand it. (1000 Characters or less)

2) What experiences and/or relationships have motivated you toward a career in osteopathic medicine? (1000 Characters or less)

I will be to join your more discussion soon, still waiting on transcripts to be sent to TMDSAS, and some LOR to be uploaded to my Interfolio as well. Congrats on being able to submit your primary so early in the cycle. This school is my top choice as well.

Did you guys find any info on LOR recommendations, specifically number of letters and what types they are looking for? I couldn't find anything on the site

I believe with what I have found on discussion threads from previous years that they will take either DO or MD letters. Maybe double check and look at last year's TCOM discussion

It's ideal for DO LOR, but there have been plenty of people who have gotten in with just MD. Just be able to answer "why DO" and understand what is an osteopathic physician. I got asked both of those questions even though it's on the secondary.

Ok and how about science professors and such? Any recommendations on total number of sent LOR?

From what I found on last years discussion thread TMDSAS requires 2 LORs from science professors and 1 LOR from a physician (DO preferred). I think you can really send as many LORs as you want though if you think it can help your application. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I had a committee for mine, but all they really did was package my letters together. Had 2 science, 1 MD, 1 DO

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone here know of any Canadian students getting accepted to this school? I am Canadian and I am trying to decide whether it is worth applying to this school or not, considering how it is an entirely different application system and an added fee.

Also when did they application cycle open, and when will it close for international students?

I would say you would have a very difficult time if you applied to this school. 90% of the accepted students must be Texas residents. So that leaves very few spots open for out of state and international students. I am not entirely sure if they take international students or not actually.

Hey everyone, I applied as an OOS applicant last year and will be attending TCOM this coming year. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. For my letters, I only had 2 science letters and no physician letter.

The school does consider international applicants. And yes, you are right it would be very difficult getting in the school compared to the others. Does anyone know what the average GPA/MCAT is for the school over the years?

I think what I have found through the grapevine of SDN, last years stats were 28 MCAT (22-36 range), 3.59 cGPA, 3.51 sGPA.

Here are the numbers for Fall 2010 -> Fall 2015:
Mean cGPA/Mean sGPA: 3.52/3.42, 3.59/3.49, 3.57/3.46, 3.59/3.51, 3.60/3.49, 3.67/3.57
Mean/Range MCAT: 28/19-37, 27/19-42, 28/22-35, 28/22-36, 28/22-40, 28/24-34
Acceptances/Apps: 448/2,098, 507/2,297, 520/2,647, 465/2,730, 454/3,006, 444/3,006
Entering Class Size, Fall 2015: 230 (213 Texas Residents, 17 Non-residents)
(Note: TCOM uses TMDSAS and does not allow grade replacement.)

I was admitted with NO physician letters. Just a committee letter containing 3 professor recommendations.

Hello! I just wanted to wish you all luck this year! I will be attending TCOM this year as a first year an am so excited to be joining a fantastic group of students at such an amazing school! Please feel free to contact me if you have ANY questions and I'll do my best to answer. I know the application cycle is stressful and has crazy lows and awesome highs, but you will all get through it! Here's some info about my application (I got 5 interviews at both MD and DO schools and was accepted to all but one, so there is so much more to your application than just statistics)!!!

MCAT 1: 19
MCAT 2 (5 years later): 22
MCAT 3 (1 year later): 27
SGpa: 3.2
Cum Gpa: 3.28 (TMDSAS) and 3.38 (AMCAS)

One long term healthcare job and multiple volunteer and leadership experiences
Volunteer hours: 700
Shadowing hours : 650
2 science letters, 2 MD letters, and an employer letter

My point in showing you all this is that I was admitted based upon my community service, dedication to medicine, rec letters, and perseverance. there is hope for you all! If I can do it, you can do it! Best of luck!

Thank you for sharing your story. I am an international student (Canadian), and deciding whether I should apply through TMDSAS to TCOM, what do you think?

Hello!
I think if you have genuine interest in Osteopathic Medicine and can articulately express this interest then you should apply! I strongly believe that my interest in TCOM and passion and Knowledge of Osteopathy is the number one factor that granted me admission. You will need to do a good job emphasizing your desire to attend TCOM because you are not a Texas resident, but if you really want to attend, then definitely apply! I never in a million years thought I would get in and I did!

I believe the TMDSAS application is open already until Oct 1- all the information you need for your application is on their website. There are links to secondary applications on the TMDSAS site as well for after you complete your primary!

Since you are a Texas resident, I think you have really good chances :) Shine in your interview.

Yes, the TMDSAS and all Texas school secondary applications are open to submission now.

Yes your numbers are in range for a TCOM interview as they seem to be accepting of an either/or situation in regards to stats. You're Mcat is below their avg but your gpa is above. Any unique EC's? Most people I met at welcome day had some pretty cool backgrounds. They also are looking for people who are excited about becoming DO's so I hope you put some effort into their secondary.

Your stats can get you the interview (I can't guarantee it or anything). Just remember to practice for the interview. You'd be surprised how many people don't have a well thought out "tell me about yourself" answer. Simple to do and real easy to mess up.

I called TCOM to see if the DO I shadowed had e-mailed them my LOR that I mentioned on their secondary. I wasn't given an answer but Admissions did say that I could submit the LOR to them through interfolio just to be sure.

Is it okay to submit the application before a final transcript is received by TMDSAS? Mine should be in by next week, but I'd love to start working on my secondary.

They'll need that final transcript to verify your grades so I don't think it'll matter if you submit prior to it coming in or waiting. You can just do the secondary essays while waiting so you can submit those when verified.

Questions:
What's the dress code for omm? How often do guys have to take their shirts off (I'm a little embarrassed haha)
How much time off is given for comlex 1? Any study materials provided? Thanks!

So I have my EUID set up, but how does one actually start filling out the secondary? When I click on my "To Do List" link, I don't see anything that directs me to start filling out the secondary. Help anyone?

Click on HSC Admissions tab, on the left side at the top of the column. After the page loads, look toward the right and under TCOM Applicants, click on D.O. Secondary Application. It will take you to a semi blank page, click D.O. Secondary Application again, it will take you to a page that will forward you to another page. You will need to create an Application ID and PIN. Remember what you pick because you will use that information to find your application if you save and close out. To do that, click on Find your Existing Application. Make sure you save frequently. Good luck.

So I was wondering if anyone else had experienced something similar to me when filling out the courses taken section and grades in the primary application. Since TMDSAS only takes whole letter grades, my GPA greatly increased.

Does anyone know how the Adcoms feel about LOI?

I wrote two LOIs and they were both received well. I am attending TCOM in July. So yes, write them. Just don't write about nothing. Make them believe you have a reason to update them and don't forget to say why you would fit in at TCOM

I'm an incoming student, but this is what I've noticed- the men can wear sweats or shorts I believe and I think they are shirtless (I've seen some with tank tops on but idk if that's normal). At least you don't have to be in a sports bra with no shirt like us! And don't worry, everyone's uncomfortable
With their shirts off haha.

As to COMLEX, I believe we have about 6-7 weeks off before we start 3rd year, which is usually when we study and take COMLEX. I don't think any materials for studying are provided- but all this could be off, just going off what I've heard!

Yes, you just send the letters to their "Office of Admissions and Outreach" at their main campus address (3500 Camp Bowie Boulevard
Fort Worth, Texas 76107-2699)

I saw this article in the paper a couple of days ago and thought it might be of interest to anyone who hasn't seen it... My background is in public health and this is significant news... It basically says that TCOM is officially entering into a partnership with JSP Health Network (which is really the business name for the Tarrant County hospital district). The network includes JPS Hospital which is a Level 1 trauma center where TCOM students rotate and has other sites throughout the county...

JPS, UNTHSC agree to create healthcare group
Posted Thursday, Jun. 12, 2014
By Diane Smith and Bill Hanna
[email protected] [email protected]

FORT WORTH — The city’s largest public health care provider and city’s only medical school — JPS Health Network and the University of North Texas Health Science Center — on Thursday announced a partnership aimed at improving health care and expanding both educational and research opportunities.

The UNT System Board of Regents and the Tarrant County Hospital District both approved creation of a nonprofit to oversee a new physicians medical group for doctors treating patients through both institutions. The issue was approved in separate meetings with an 8-2 vote by the hospital district board and 7-0 by the UNT regents.....

The newly created medical group doesn’t have an official name or director yet.

In coming months, patients treated by doctors from UNT Health or JPS Health Network will start receiving care under the newly formed medical group. Williams and Earley said they want patients to notice a new name coupled with more communication with physicians or caregivers. Patients should also get more access to information about their health.

As details of the new agreement emerged, community and city leaders praised the partnership......

Physicians will get their paychecks from one entity instead of UNTHSC or JPS. All the providers will work within the same medical group providing service to the hospital and clinics......

The UNT Health Science Center, in Fort Worth’s Cultural District, is home to several community-based programs in which researchers are exploring treatment options for Alzheimer's disease and searching for solutions to Tarrant County's high infant mortality.

The new entity marries UNTHSC’s research work with efforts in the JPS Network, which has a teaching hospital with nine residency programs. Officials said research resources will be shared. ......

The agreement is not the first time the two institutions have joined forces.

UNTHSC has provided professional medical staffing and services to the JPS Health Network at the hospital and clinics. Professional medical services have included community medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, psychiatry, rheumatology, cardiology, and gastroenterology.

UNTHSC and JPS have also maintained Graduate Medical Education and Undergraduate Medical Education programs at the JPS hospital and clinics.

Good move by Dr. Williams for TCOM and Tarrant County. The new combined entity will probably be announced early next year. Thanks for posting.

Good luck to everyone this cycle!

How do you think it'll help TCOM? I read the article a week or so ago and thought it was pretty cool since JPS is one of TCOM's main hospitals for students. However, I don't really understand what the merger will bring.

Did anyone else's status change to "invited for interview"?

Nope. Congrats! According to last years thread, you (and who ever gets the status change) should be getting phone calls today, maybe tomorrow about your interview.

In a nutshell, TCOM needs the JPS patient base, and JPS needs the TCOM provider base. As a county hospital, JPS is not as nice looking as Harris or Cook, the food is crappy compared to Plaza, and the parking sucks, but it is a major public hospital in the U.S. with Level 1 status, and the volume and variety of pathologies from 1.9 million people is significant for research and training. For TCOM students, it is a great teaching hospital. They work you hard at JPS, but they teach you a ton of stuff every day.
Incidentally TCOM has had a training agreement with JPS for many years, even when there was an osteopathic hospital on campus (which TCOM later acquired and then demolished to make room for the MET building & football field).
