Late-Breaking SDN Internship News From Your Messages to Me

  • "I also wanted to provide an update for Morrison Child & Family Services; maybe you can put this information somewhere. There was a mass e-mail from the TD sent on 11/19/20 indicating that the internship was closing down and would not be accepting interns for the 20-21 year. Because this decision came one week after the application deadline, I reached out to someone from APPIC via chat, and they said that they would forward a request on my behalf to get a refund. I haven't seen the refund yet, but at least they seemed willing. So, I hope others know they can do the same. "

I was thinking the same thing, I did not get any direct emails from the sites saying they got my applications. I only received the APPIC emails saying my apps have been submitted.

Hi all! What are your thoughts on interview attire? As a female I was planning on wearing a pants suit with a tie. Do you think I will be judged for not dressing based on gender norms/traditionally feminine?

I think most applicants will be wearing suits. Not sure if the tie is necessary.

We might've gotten the same email from the same site because I also woke up to an email on Sunday morning and freaked out only to find it was a "materials received" email!

No not necessary, just thought it looked good with my outfit! I was also told to wear one thing that makes you stand out like a pin or interesting earrings. I have also heard to blend in as much as possible so idk.

That is in line with what I saw during this process last year! Most people wore suits. Few people stood out. I wore a “loud” button up that I love (under my suit). I think if a tie is in line with your normal style, go for it!

I have a serious question...what about footwear if you are interviewing in a state with heavy snow? Lets say I am taking an uber from the airport in heavy snow shoes. I get to the interview and put on nice flats in the bathroom. What do I do with my snowy footwear? Stuff it in my suitcase? Will I freeze during the interview if I am wearing flats and they are not heating the building?
Like with a suit, you can wear a lot of underlayers and still be warm and professional. Footwear is a different story and I think cold feet may be very distracting.

I think I'm going with some sleek boots for wintery interviews, something that can look normal under a suit but still withstand snow

i am self conscious, what if an interviewer is like “why is she wearing boots with a suit? Weirdo”

or is this normal for you northern state folks?

I wore boots similar to this. Looked fine/normal with slacks. Low heel with good traction because busting my ass on the way into an interview is not my idea of a good time. I saw people in pumps with snow on the ground outside and that struck me as an odd choice. Anywhere cold enough for snow will be warm enough inside the building for flats without socks, though.

Sleek boots can be normal. Or if you wear heavy snow boots and change, ask the TD if there is somewhere you can leave your stuff during the interview. People do this with suitcases all the time too.

If i recall correctly, I wore winter boots to some interviews and changed into my heels. I brought along a plastic bag so I could store / easily transport the shoes if necessary. I don't recall getting any weird looks and many times, you're housed in a large room in between interviews so it's easy to store your stuff off to the side (unless the program offers a room / place for luggage and such). In all honesty, I think I also wore flats to interviews in the warmer states and changed into heels - I'm all about comfort :) (and carrying a large purse).

Me too! I got a call from my top site yesterday that turned out to be the TD with a question about my application (can you clarify your experience with this test?) and it was a brief rollercoaster of emotions for me.

Same. I think one site might reach out to me this week (for a reection most likely). However, yesterday, I received an email from one of the VAs I applied to basically saying "thank you for applying to the neuropsychology track, we've received your application, etc." When I saw that email notification in the top of my screen, I about had a heart attack lol.
 
Intercommunity Action inc. in Philadelphia is sending out replies - a cohort member received an invitation to interview this evening

It depends. Some sites send interview invitations on a "rolling" basis and explicitly state this on their application materials, and others send out invitations en masse. It varies site by site! I would say most sites send out the majority of invitations in the same day, though.

It also depends on how they deliver invites. Phone calls and personal emails will be more staggered. I also saw on last year’s thread that it depends on how fast the assigned reviewer is with going through the applications compared to others.

I definitely feel my Thanksgiving will either be GREAT or filled with a lot of void filling pie based on the rolling basis/mass email trend I have been seeing.

That's interesting...their application deadline is November 15th. So I guess they send out notifications regardless of the deadline?

Some sites are early. and some sites do rolling interviews. In general, many sites probably won't be sending out invites/rejections until a week or two past their deadline. Usually we have to have everything in and applications screened, and then have a meeting to decide which X number of those get an interview invite.

Curious, how does one know if a program does rolling interview invitations? I went back to read King County's APPIC description and I did not see any overt statements indicating they do rolling interviews. Just curious. :)
