Janitor Vs. DO. HELP ME CHOOSE!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Come on you can get into a janitorial progam. It's not only the stats, they look at the person at a whole, that's how I plan on getting in

This thread went beyond it's limitations. I was laughing so hard when it started but now it's just too much. I seriously can't wait to be in school with you guys.😛

My stats are too lousy for janitorial programs so I'm applying for the dishwashing program at my in-state school instead. Do you think I'll have a better shot at it??

I wouldn't go for a dishwashing program just because of your stats, that is a terrible reason to become a dishwasher.

Some people like the idea of being a dishwasher where you don't have to specialize. You can easily change between lunch rooms, hospital cafeterias, or restaurants. Heck some states will even let you buy your own supplies and dishwashing liquid without having to have a janitor sign off on them.

If you just want to go into lunch rooms I would say a dishwasher may be the way to go, as I believe Obama is trying to give dishwashers federal mopping duty reimbursement now.

The question you need to ask yourself though is: "Do I want to be fully responsible for the outcome of a hallway cleanup, or will I be ok with deferring to a janitor".

I agree, dishwashing school isn't Janitor/Custodian school. If you really want it, go for it. Going for less than you want, just because of your stats, is not a good idea.

There are plenty of schools with post-bacc programs out there, and you are accepted directly into the JS/CS program when you finish the post-bacc. Give those a shot!

Thanks for everyone's words of encouragement! I'm looking into post-bacc programs now and hopefully if I do well, maybe I'll have a decent shot at some janitor/custodian programs! 🙂

I mean, dishwashing is nice and all (and I even have about 15 years of volunteering experience in this area), but I always wanted to be responsible for the overall clean-up as opposed to working with just the dishes.

It's totally worth it. Having no restrictions on your cleaning abilities is nice.

Has anyone taken the JCAT yet? I'm really worried on would be on it? I am also looking for review books, I heard the Brown Unviersity is coming out with one, but It won't be sold till mid June.

Hey rddoms, your a Janitorial student, can you recall anything?

Hi guys, I am a first year undergrad. Let me tell you my story.
I have always dreamed of becoming a Janitor. Not only has it been my passion to clean, but it has been my goal in life. My high school notes couldn't have been cleaner (of course, I did use a different eraser for each of my courses).
Now as a first year, I have the chance to pursue what I have been dreaming about for the last decade. I was just wondering how I would be able to take the required prerequisites before the four years. I am actually in a very hectic program (Janitorial Mechanics) with very few electives; in fact I don't have any electives in 2nd year first semester and only one in the second semester. I understand we have to take:
- General Janitorial Biology with Lab
- Inorganic Janitorial Chemistry with lab
- the most feared, Janitorial Organic Chemistry with lab (I hear we are exposed to blue vomit and white feces) should be an interesting course
- Dynamics for Janitors I and II
- Janitorial Derivatives and Limits

Help me plan it !!

and to vpv, why don't you take a easier major like Janitorial Philiosphy?

I am pre-MD and I AGREE! Ya'll are making me wish I was going DO! Most epic, hilarious thread on SDN EVER.

I hope I work with many of you one day!

Not to late to give up that acceptance and reapply for DO hehe 🙄

This thread is ballin'

What classes would be in Janitorial Philiosphy?

What is a mop? Does it exist? Is our self defined by the existence of the mop?😱

personally, I'd go for the janitorial job. Don't let stats be your sole basis.

hahahaha, the epic thread still lives!

At least as a janitor u have better chances of specializing than u do as a DO....

What do the match lists look like?

You can DO it. DO, DO, DO!

I am taking applications currently for janitorial internships at my farm.

Rotations include

*basic house cleaning with emphasis on kitchen sanitation

*gardening and lawn care

*detailing Audi A4 convertible

*advanced cleaning - barn care and horse manure removal and basic composting technique - mandatory hoof picking skills are prerequisite

What janitor schools offer dual degrees? I was think of getting a JD/BD (janitor degree and bus driver degree) so I can better serve the elementary needs of inner city children.

Ok I have the new stats....

Its not easy to become a janitor , the last time i heard, the average stats for those that get accepted into the janitor program are:

MCAT -- 38 , thats if you apply early too (anything below 37, kiss your chances good bye)

First of all its called JSAE (Janitorial Service Admissions Examination) and the average is a 118,456.96 with a BB on the lab practical

GPA (in janitor courses)--3.97 (anything below 3.84, FORGET IT --u wont meet the cutoff) Volunteer work: extensive janitor shadowing and working after hours on holidays.

The cutoff is actually a resting heartrate of 88.9 bpm. I would recommend anyone below an 84.5 some heavy mentholated chain smoking (1-2 sems) and/or shadowing a white castle chef

Program: 7 year program (no summer off)- just learning to clean Sh***tt

This varies. I know a guy who did his Janitorial Order training (J.O.) in the south pacific (I think Malaysia but I don't know cause I only extracted the parts of our conversation that I wanted to believe to be true and correct). He said he completed his JO in 5 total semesters! And can work in the US or Canada after an intensive 6-month FJOS (Foreign JO Service) stint at an accredited Taco Bell or Jenny Craig.

You need Letters of Recommendations from three janitors with 40 years experience in the job...People travel across the country to F***king find these people. From what i heard there are only 5 left. The rest retired.

Its tuff, but it can be done.:luck:

This is still true. The three I am aware of are:
Dwayne Johnson
Shawn Kemp
Jesse James

If you cannot meet these standards I would look into a JA or RCS (Janitorial Assistant and Registered Custodial Servant, respectively) which have slightly lower requirements and training, but essentially have the exact same responsibilities.

On the otherhand, if you feel you are superior to current and future JO's, I would seriously look into an MJD (Master of Janitorial Direction). You get a cooler jumpsuit: notice the locale-patch instead of the name-patch

The JD/BD degree is required if you want to live a showerless life of fatass-ed-ness. Also it can be beneficial for commuting between clean-ups. But I would not recommend wasting the money on a dual degree if all you want to do is be around stench all day, either will do.

A. GET THE F*** OVER YOURSELF!!!!!!!
B. You don't know anyone's ages or statuses from a thread.
C. No one was mocking janitors in a mean sense. Even laborers would find this funny because its not to mock the janitors or making fun of the janitors or their IQ. it is using another profession's name to show the ludicrousness of threads on SDN. To show how ludicrous people are for their over the top beliefs. IT IS A PARODY and nothing more. Grow up and gain a sense of humor. read the people below who said they recognized this thread was just to mock the idiocracy of debates about DO vs. MD on here. Anyone with common sense can see that. Hell, the real janitors and custodians could see that. Seems like its you who needs to buy a clue.

i like your passion

Just wanted to say that in a time of being utterly stressed and confused and scared,

this is a great thread. Made me actually laugh.

So thanks. 😛

this is THE stupidest thread to ever land on SDN.

This is the funniest thread on SDN! I couldn't stop laughing while reading some of the posts on this.:laugh::laugh:

I'm almost done with my custodial residency, and let me reassure all the aspiring young custodial candidates that there is virtually no difference between what I do, and what my janitorial buddies do. In fact, if you ask school teachers who the custodian and who the janitors are, they can't tell the difference.

Occasionally someone would ask if I can also practice the custodial arts in different towns and cities. People think that I'm only limited to this city, while the janitors have unlimited cleaning duties everywhere they want to go. But if you look at wiki, I almost have univeral cleaning rights. There are a few places (where they have their own custodial traditions and practice the ancient ways of cleaning (ie cleaning the floor on knees with soap, water, and brush) but we're working on gaining privileges, taking into account our extensive training.

Besides, when there is a big mess and they need extra help, janitors and custodians unite as one (Cleaners Without Borders/Concierges Sans Frontieres) to go help clean. It's truly a rewarding experience and both janitors and custodians are allow to join.

I plan to do a fellowship in middle school emergencies (classroom vomits, toilet overflows, acute shortages of toilet papers, etc) and the field is open to both janitors and custodians.

In this economy where manufacturing jobs can be outsourced, informational jobs can be outsourced OR replaced with computers, there will always be jobs for both custodians and janitors. My only competition is the Roomba (that robot thinks he's as good as a janitor, even though he doesn't go through the rigorous training and just receives programming instructions written by nonjanitorial/custodian programmers)

I'm surprised that I'm the only former janitor to post so far. I did that at an apartment complex for a summer, and cleaned carpets for another summer. Those jobs actually weren't too bad. The bad work was when I was a logger, tarbaby, snow shoveler, and construction cleanup guy. Not much fun, but what else was I going to do with a European History degree? It was always hard to decide if I should include college on my job applications-- what boss wants to hire somebody smarter than himself? If I'd known that the only requirement for medical school was an extra year of college, I would have started my prereqs years ago.

You, sir, have just won the internet. This is the greatest thing I have read in a long time. Thank you

I am actually a janitor at Sam's Club and have goals to become a physician and practice medicine.

This was and is my all-time favorite thread. My grandpa actually is dual janitor/custodian, and he thought it was hilarious.

No, but he did an international rotation in France-a place that janitors even call dirty...

Did you get into it for the wrong reasons? You must have done something right to get in at Sam’s club. Anytime someone drops the S-bomb I just assume they’ve got a relative high up in the chain. Makes me sick how it’s become all about who you know.

What the hell!!!? I just got rejected from Harvard's janitorial program.

I have a freaking 3.96 GPA, 39 JCAT, 2,000 hours of hardcore bathroom and floor cleaning shadowing, 3 years of toilet bowl cleaning research, and 1,000 hours of volunteering with kids who have endured difficult battles with using dirty bathrooms at the American Custodian Association. I just don't understand what I did wrong! Applying to become a custodian is such a crap shoot (pun very much intended). I'm thinking about lowering my aspirations and becoming a DO physician.

Anyone have words of advice???

I used Japlan, but I really don't think it prepares you well enough for the JCAT. They give you practice messes to clean up but then when you get to the real JCAT and they just throw in something youve never seen before like a dead moose and you are like WTF?!? how the hell do i clean that up?!?!

Has anyone used any different strategies for the JCAT? I keep getting bogged down and I really feel like I should use some different cleaning techniques. I know that some people mop from side to side and others use figure 8's and I just havent found the best strategies yet. Any Ideas?

Hey guys I'm a predental student but I've been thinking more and more about switching to pre-janitorial. Although the salary and lifestyle of dentists are great I am realizing that I don't want to spend the rest of my life focused on just the mouth when a janitor has access to a variety of different messes, spots and stains.

I've only taken 2 semesters of floor waxing and got a letter of recommendation, and have started my first week of shadowing in a high school (all the middle school janitors I called said they already had students shadowing them so hopefully that doesn't hurt my app). What study materials did you use for the JCAT?

The dead-moose scenario is an often-tested scenario on the JCAT, like hemoglobin on the MCAT.

Just use the right hand rule.

wow that's awesome.

lol. I wish I had won that much money. I'd have given it to my lab to keep doing its work and kept a bit for my hopefully medical education and a new car for my parents and a small cheaper new car for me.

Uhhh, I hope by 'give it to my lab ... and buy a small, cheap car for me,' you meant buy a Ferrari and drive it down large public streets while stopping to make it 'rain' on random people.

Because that was the correct response.

hahaha. True that a ferrari would be badass. My dad once sat in one at a dealership or car show and couldn't get out cuz it was too small for him and he's not thin. It was kinda funny. Either that or it was lamborghini. Forget which.

But even the ferrari isn't 4 million dollars. More like half a million. maybe a million at most.
