Janitor Vs. DO. HELP ME CHOOSE!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hm. I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean by "elbow grease." Please explain this concept to me in graphic detail.
Quagmire.png

BenU, do you think the allied health hotties like the Janitors or Custodians more? I mean the Janitors have a leg up with the extra "elbow grease", right?
ok, I think It doesn't matter if your a Janitor or Custodian. What really matters is the speciallty! Peds janitors and Custodians hands down come in first place.😎
I would avoid OB/GYN, have you seen a placenta, it looks like a Squid!! I mean how would you dispose of it?

"Placenta Stew: Meat of 3/4 placenta in bite size chunks, 1 potato (cubed), 1/4 cup fresh parsley, 2 carrots, 3 ribs celery, 1 zucchini, 1 large tomato, 1 small onion. Dredge meat in 1 tbl. flour mixed with 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp. paprika, pinch of cloves, pinch of pepper, 6-8 crushed coriander seeds. Saute meat in 2 tbl. oil, then add vegetables (cut up) and 4-5 cups of water. Bring to full boil, then simmer for 1 hour."

Sounds like another episode for Andrew Zimmern.

🙂😀 freaken hilarious.

'Definitely Janitor. As you know, the pecking order for life degrees goes: MD > Caribbean MD > African MD > Mexico MD > DeVry University MD > Janitor > DO. The DO will follow you around your whole life and people will always look down on you as a dirty osteopath. You'll never be able to attract a single patient, and DOs can only practice family medicine in the mid-west. As you know, a Janitor opens all doors whereas the DO only slams them. Also, since everyone wants to practice internationally - and will for sure - the DO will only allow you to practice in 5-10 cities in the US where a janitor can clean anywhere. You should also be aware that I know this from shadowing over two physicians, each who told me that this is fact - plus I'm a pre-med and understand the workings of health care. '
- Love, Pre- Med.

Sounds like another episode for Andrew Zimmern.

My god. Zimmern and Bourdain are two of the biggest factors in explaining my GPA...

I have almost all of Bourdain's books and saw him in person. I cook his recipes when I can get the ingredients (although most of the time I modify stuff... can't afford to buy random bottles of Calvados). I actually referred to his 'Les Halles' cookbook today to see how to rectify a failed pan sauce. Final result - utter failure. That's what happens when you lose your concentration after pipetting for 9 hours.

I am very glad that I am working on my Janitorial Sciences degree, because when I read this I nearly puked on my computer! I'm not sure that lemon pledge would be able to get that stink out...

(And just for a reminder, Janitor=DO and Custodian=MD for the purposes of this thread. The extra "Elbow Grease" would be equivalent to OTM.)

Why do these janitorial programs require mandatory attendance and attire? The custodians don't have these rules at their schools. I would rather stay home and study the mechanisms of cleaning solutions than listen to some visiting janitor😡.

Not all Janitorial schools are created equally. The school I go to doesn't take attendance (aside from labs), and lets me wear whatever I want.

I usually stay at home and study mechanisms of cleaning solutions, anatomy of the cleaning cart, physiology of janitor tools, and theory of "messes". It is nice to download the lectures and play them at double speed, I get a lot more done each day.

Do you actually play lectures at double speed? What a great idea.

So let me get this straight. When someone posts why DO is less than MD, that's considered offensive or wrong because it hurts the feelings of people on these boards and is "inflammatory" or whatever. SDN always delivers! 👎

But its OK to make fun/mock other jobs that aren't at the "same level" as long as it doesn't hurt the feelings of some students with mediocre gpas/MCAT issues?

Talk about a bunch of pretentious hypocrites. And now that we're on it, let's make fun of EMTs, or illegal immigrants doing manual labor for $2/hour, or truck drivers, and all other minimum wage jobs for the matter.

P.S. I hope that all of you who are getting a laugh out of this get the chance to be looked down upon for whatever reason. You're not special, you're no Einstein, and you're no smarter than the janitor and you've been given the privilege of becoming a doctor not because you're special but because you were granted the freedom to pursue this track. Hell, most of you are just naive and spoiled 18 and 19 year old premeds who have never worked a real job, and have basically memorized random factoids to get into medical school :laugh. Get over yourselves. And if you didn't get into med. school, you'd be a lab tech with your useless undergrad majors, and the irony would be outrageous.

If this is the type of attitude many of you have, then there is no reason why MDs shouldn't see you as inferior as it's certainly within their jurisdiction to do so too.

Show me an example of how this thread makes fun of other jobs. Seriously. Actually read the thread.

I have nothing but respect for anybody who goes out and does hard work. One of my biggest frustrations with the medical field is when I hear nurses, medics, or friends who are currently finishing their RN complain about abuse from doctors.

In a CNN article on Haiti, a doctor talked about how it was strange that he wasn't a big shot outside of the hospital and had to do things like "clean". Such bullsh*t, for me, is intolerable. I find it difficult to believe that a physician may be a truly compassionate care provider when they're also verbally abusive of the professionals around him, especially in a field where teamwork is so critical.

The thread is mocking the difference between janitors and DOs. It's supposed to be humorous because of all the MD vs. DO threads that popup all the time. Except that because janitors are considered the "lowest rung" on the ladder, that it seems ok to make light of that fact.

I guess when your own ego is taken into account, then a pre-DO/DO is going to come up with how its rude, offensive, stupid, or ridiculous for society and MDs/pre-MDS/etc. to see you not as an equal. Because it affects YOU.

Such hypocrisy.

Yeah sure you do. And you want to "help people" and medicine is the only way to do so right? 😴

Blah blah blah. You still haven't said anything of substance. Perhaps from the OP one might say that, but otherwise, it's been harmless.

When given evidence contrary to your beliefs on what DO/pre-DOs actually feel towards other, as you say, "lower", professions, you dismiss it. You have no real basis for your argument, especially given the fact that a large percentage of DO matriculants are non-traditional applicants.

Wow, you generalize. First off, don't take this thread seriously... we're not making fun of Janitors... hell, my IMMIGRANT MOTHER CLEANS IN A HOSPITAL. Even she wouldn't take this thread so seriously.

And yea, I worked a "real job". Yes I know what it means to work hard. I'm sure this applies to most people in this thread. Getting into med school requires more than knowing and regurgitating facts. C'mon, stop playing some kind of high-and-mighty hero role... Maybe if you reread the thread you'll see the sarcasm... 🙄

And your "If this is the type of attitude many of you have, then there is no reason why MDs shouldn't see you as inferior as it's certainly within their jurisdiction to do so too" quotation is so hypocritical. If anything, MDs are less capable of being humble, and would be the first to mock people who have "less status".

Blah blah blah. You still haven't said anything of substance.

Coming from you... that doesn't mean a lot.

What, you already forgot?

we're not making fun of Janitors...

Yes, yes you guys are. It's a lame attempt at humor at best and it's offensive too.

It's like comparing the President of the United States to a plumber, except that the difference isn't as large. It's supposed to be funny because of the implicit differences in "respect" and "status" between the DO and Janitor and it's offensive because not everybody has the means (everyone has the intelligence to do it but not necessarily the right environment conducive to learning) of becoming a doctor. Or maybe, just maybe some people just don't have the brains to become a doctor for instance. Who knows, but the point is that it's pretty condescending.

In any case, I'm done with this thread, there's no use in arguing and I take solace that I'm know I'm not the only one who thinks this too.

No, please do continue whining.

Of all things, I thought this thread would catch some heat for disrespecting the DO profession... not the other way around. The running joke in this thread is how being a janitor would be better than being a DO.

So how is that making fun of janitors? We're making fun of OURSELVES.

Uhm, I think you are the only one who thinks this way.

Mister T,

Wow, have you read the entire thread? It was initially started as a Janitor vs. DO joke, pointing out how ridiculous some of the DO vs. MD threads are. It has since evolved into a Janitor vs. Custodian thread (mimicking many DO vs. MD threads), which is again showing how ridiculous SDN can get at times.

In no way is this thread about demeaning anybody and/or their career. It is a JOKE, but apparently you missed that.

You are going overboard for no reason. You are talking down about the people continuing this thread, which shows how mature you are. I apologize that you can't understand what this joke is about, but get off your high horse.

To everyone who might read this thread, it is a joke! It is not meant to demean anybody. It is not meant to show superiority of any career. Read it thoroughly, and you will see that it is making fun of the arguments posted on SDN.

Grew up with both parents as laborers. Still are. Janitor, lunch lady, cafeteria clean up, etc. Hell, I worked as a busboy-cleanup for years. My parents read it and thought it was hilarious. Thought it was even funnier after explaining some of the md vs. do metaphors.

Don't worry about mr. t. There's always going to be that one guy that has to stand up for everyone. Kind of like that annoying kid in your high school class that will "shhhhhh" people while they talk during class thinking they are helping everyone out. Reminds me of my sister.

Agreed. I worked as a busboy/server/bartender/etc. from high school to the end of grad school.

All I'm saying is that he should've read the entire thread before squawking. There is no one to defend, no one is being made fun of. As far as the "shhhhhh'er", you are right. They never go away. Unfortunate...

Now back on Track to the thread,
I listen to Anatomy Lectures on Tegrity at like x1.6. It was so funny listening to it actually helped me retain what I learned. It so funny playing it in slow-mo, sounds like he slurring his speech.

I figured it Out!

This thread is almost Complete. We already have had our Troll!

A. GET THE F*** OVER YOURSELF!!!!!!!
B. You don't know anyone's ages or statuses from a thread.
C. No one was mocking janitors in a mean sense. Even laborers would find this funny because its not to mock the janitors or making fun of the janitors or their IQ. it is using another profession's name to show the ludicrousness of threads on SDN. To show how ludicrous people are for their over the top beliefs. IT IS A PARODY and nothing more. Grow up and gain a sense of humor. read the people below who said they recognized this thread was just to mock the idiocracy of debates about DO vs. MD on here. Anyone with common sense can see that. Hell, the real janitors and custodians could see that. Seems like its you who needs to buy a clue.

Mister T is too dense to realize this factoid otherwise he'd have gotten the point of this thread and never posted. Why talk to someone who can't seem to use common sense and get what it is realy about?

And how is our parody any different then the parodies made in the political comic strips in newspapers about events in the news and current presidents during any given year? Mister T, grow up and buy a clue.

Another useless post on SDN by Mister T, nothing to see here ladies and gentlemen.

i worked as a janitor's assistant in middle school and high school (the janitor being my dad). it was pretty cool, i got paid about 1/5 of what he made but it was nice that i wasn't the one actually in charge. maybe u should consider a job as a janitor's assistant, less school, more freedom, dad was there to go to when i didn't know how to work the floor polishing machine.

no seriously, i really did help my dad scrub toilets and polish floors. mr t get over urself b/c like others have said: my janitor father thought this was hilarious. and ironically enough, he was in his second year of medical school in the 70s when political mayhem and financial issues/family issues forced him to drop out of mexico's best med school. he's still the smartest person i know and helps me with physiology hmwrk decades after having had the courses himself and was lol'ing at how funny u guys are!

Wow...Someone is on their high horse...Careful a fall from that height may kill you!

But seriously, learn to laugh at yourself and you will live a longer and happier life! Just goes to show you there is always some killjoy out there!

Hmm..When you guys shadowed your janitor, did you get to see him/her utilize the red biohazard bag? Or was it it mostly garden-variety sanitation bags? Please advise. I want to see more biohazardous waste. It will make for good conversation in my upcoming interview. My stats are within normal range but I need more shadowing experience, according to my advisor. Thank you.

edit: janitors rock!👍

I'm so glad people like you and Basscaster can see the point of this thread. I'm not one who takes a liking to people and one who can be very sensitive at times, but yet I still can't see how this is offending janitors. So I'm glad to see that children who've had parents who've had to work in that kind of position can see that too. 🙂

Anyone who gets offended by this thread probably didn't bother to read the thread. If they did read the thread and are still offended, they can probably expect ~4 VR on the MCAT.

Sounds like someone got rejected from both Janitor and Custodian school. Remember, if you end up going to a South Pacific school of Custodial Science that anything outside of the big 4 isn't accepted by all 50 states. No matter what, go to a South Pacific school that's on the big Ohio list that most of the states defer to. www.value_custodian.com has more information on the South Pacific schools, including the non-top 4 schools.

I'm ticked. I've just graduated from a well recognized janitor assistant program and finished my first week on the job in a local elementary school.

The problem is everyone thinks I'm some janitor school drop-out and all I can do is follow around janitors, handing him tools and supplies as he needs them. This isn't true. I clean my own classrooms, handle everything but code browns, and only need to speak to my supervising janitor if there's a mess I don't know how to clean up. Regardless of this, the registered secretaries (RS) constantly belittle me because I didn't go all the way.

People don't understands I make 2/3 of what a normal janitor makes, but I have about a quarter of the college loans and great job flexibility. I can move from a middle school to a high school without completing any additional training; everything I need to know is learned on the job.

I'm petitioning that we change the name to something that better describes what we do... Janitor Associate or maybe Assistant Janitor. I'm so sick of this. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ed JA-C

lol this reminds me of when dwight calls himself assistant regional manager and then michael scott corrects him and says assistant to the regional manager. off topic sorry.

Although, I did not take this thread offensively, and I do think Mr.T took it too personally, i think there is some degree of truth in what Mr.T said. The general consensus here is that it was just "sarcasm" and "mocking the MD vs DO" type of arguments. However, if you think about it, this thread would not have been very funny nor sarcastic if OP decided to title this thread as "help me choos between high school teacher and DO." or help me choose between car mechanic and DO. Why? because we view high school teachers and car mechanics as pretty much well educated in their field. We all (whoever thought it was funny) obviously throught DO's are somewhat economically/education/social ladder advantageous than janitors. I think thats what Mr.T was trying to convey. He took it overboard thats all. Please don't kill me over this SDN lol. Its just what I think.

This is SDN. You die now.

No, I don't think there was any offense in using janitors in this thread. It simply is a profession that's just completely unrelated to medicine. For me, and I'm sure for most of the people in this thread, education level has little bearing on a person's character.

Mr. T wasn't trying to convey anything. He came in here with a hostile mentality, trying to paint everybody in this thread with the same brush. When it didn't go his way, he just resorted to trolling and left.

Again, read the post a few posts above where someone clearly points out that most people act like being a janitor is more preferable to being a DO. If anything, it would be more offensive to the DO then the janitor if they took it seriously and didn't realize it was mocking people to make a point. And truth is any sort of profession could've been added to make that point. no one would've taken offense unless they missed the point of the thread and clearly even the real janitors are not missing the point from the posts of what people's laborer parents are saying.

So I'm currently finishing my garbage collection services degree, but I'm really unhappy because I just don't agree with the philosophy anymore. The school forces this mantra that "cleanliness starts and ends with taking out the garbage." Some people slurp it down like grape kool aid, but not me. Don't get me wrong some can do very well for themselves after school, but I just don't think I'm one of those people. I bought it at first, but after starting, I think a lot is just BS. I just know too much about custodial science to believe it all. Luckily, I was pre-custodian at a very well known and respected sanitation academy, so I know enough to see through the PR spin.

I'll be in a lot of debt once school is over, but I know I won't be happy as a garbage collector. Your success depends on selling the PR. You have to hook customers with the "garbage philosophy," and then you have to keep them coming to you to pick up their trash. Sometimes as much as 5 times a week! Knowing how bunk it all is, I don't think I'll be very good at selling myself. Some garbage collectors don't even believe in vaccuums!!! They tell their clients to throw away all their cleaning supplies and come to them before seeing a licensed janitor/custodian. I mean come on!!! Sure, I believe garbage collection is a part of cleanliness, but I know there is a lot more to it than just that. Not only don't I completely agree with the philosophy, but I also think neglecting to see a janitor/custodian for the more complicated problems can be down right dangerous. Just think of all the dust and bacteria that could build up before its ever even noticed by one of us!

After I finish, I don't know what to do🙁. I want to stay in sanitation; it's what I've dreamed of doing ever since I was a kid. Although, I want to be able to clean the whole building, not just take care of the trash. I want to clean the windows, floors, sinks, toilets, everything! Right now, I wouldn't even know what to do if a code brown hit me in the face. Do you think I have a shot at janitor/custodial school? I'm scared that once they see I've been a garbage man they'll throw my app down the toilet (which they'll then be able to unclog!). There is just so much I want to learn! I know garbage collectors and janitors have more in common since we both incorporate that extra "elbow grease," so should I just apply to janitor schools?? Do you think I'll have a better chance? What do I do???????🙁🙁🙁

Thank you to those of you that read it all, I appreciate any advice. I know my situation isn't good, so I'm prepared to hear the hard truth. I only ask you to please keep any posts on topic, and don't turn this into another garbage flame war.

Blah blah blah, blah blah, blah blah blah blah. Somebody call a janitor, we got a pile of bull**** here to clean up.
