Ahh, I have to post now that you've called me out 🙂
I also wanted to share my experience at the the interview yesterday. MedicalMBA did a fantastic job of going over the general atmosphere of the school. As soon as I arrived, everyone was friendly and smiling, and although I was nervous and slightly jet lagged (NJ resident but currently in California) I instantly felt calm and reassured that no was going to try to give me a hard time or try to drill me during the interview. The admissions staff also knows/remembers everyone in the program, which goes to show how much they go out of their way to make their students feel happy and at home.
In the interview (which was one on one) we began by going over very specific things about my application, and the doctor who interviewed us that day wrote out everything I was telling him right in front of me, so it did not seem so cryptic and nerve-racking. Like MedicalMBA said, it felt like the interview flew by, and I wound up talking for most of it. It also did not feel like a q&a, but rather a way for them to get a general sense of who you are, and why you were there. We discussed very openly my strengths and weaknesses, and what I could do to improve my chances, as well as what I have already done to prove myself. The interviewer even told me how he would present his interview experience with me to the committee if they decided my file needed additional review!
After the interview, we were allowed to sit in on a first year Biochemistry class while we waited for all the applicants (there were five of us interviewing that day) to finish up their interviews. Then we had lunch and current students took us on a tour of the campus. The facilities all seem new and updated, and every student seemed so happy to be there. From their experiences and descriptions, you could tell that this is a strong program, and UMDNJ really strives to accomodate to their students. After the tour, the admissions staff recounted some funny stories of students reactions after getting accepted and getting off the waitlist. All in all, it was a great experience. UMDNJ is my first choice, and the interview made me feel even more excited than I already was about the program.
Just some facts/figures fyi, I think they received ~3100 applications so far, and they have about 160 seats. There is a strong preference for NJ residents (we were all NJ-ians in the interview) but I met some students who were originally OOS as well. Like MedicalMBA said, they meet Friday Sept 21 to review all interviewed applicants thus far (they began interviewing Aug 16 I believe), and you either get a call that Friday if accepted 🙂xf🙂 or they send out a letter in the mail notifying you that you are on the waitlist.
Hope this helps! I'll try posting all of my other interview experiences (so far interviewed at LECOM-Seton Hill, and have invites from UNECOM, NOVA, and ACOM).
