Sorry to be a downer but this school is relocating to a different campus about an hour away. Make sure to ask about that during the interview. They are merging with some school.

SOM will be a part of Rowan university as of next July, but the physical buildings are remaining where they are in Stratford, NJ. As I get more information on the merger, I'll pass it on.

sorry folks,,, i just heard this from someone in my recent interview group and it really frightened me too since this is one of my top choice. so why are they merging in the first place and what does that merger actually mean for the students? what about the fact that Rowan will be having a MD school? Does that mean it's going to be sort of like MSU with their MD and DO program? or something else where they will try to prop up MD over DO? I have so many questions but I heard that the adm dont' like to talk about it... any current student with any information about it please pass it on. thank you.

As a UMDNJ GSBS student/ In state resident I can answer some of this. They merged because of UMDNJ's "debt problem" and this merger is supposed to re-allocate funds so that it will be easier for the state. HOWEVER, they have yet to tell us how much it will save the state and etc. It is a little weird that the head of NJ congress turns out to be linked with Rowan. Anyway, as of now Rowan will have a new MD school and UMDNJ SOM will be merged with Rowan so they will have an MD and DO school. There has been concern with Rowan not having the strength to maintain two medical schools but I did hear that there was a clause in the bill saying if UMDNJ SOM is going to loose its accreditation, the merger would be off. I searched online for some news on it and that did pop up. As far as for the students, it sounds like the current students will still be able to graduate as a DO but unsure of under who's name. I was a Cook College student at Rutgers when they were merging and I was able to graduate a Cook Student as that was the contract I signed when attending Rutgers my Freshmen year. Graduate students at Newark GSBS will be merged with Rutgers grad students I believe.

As far as staffing, they cannot fire anyone until July 1st, 2014. The merger is set to take place on July 1st, 2013 unless someone stops it. I believe they are working on the details now. I get an email every once in a while with new info in my UMDNJ student email address. Try to google some of this news. I planned to ask them during my interview unless someone suggest I don't do this lol.

People can feel free to correct me.

UMDNJ still remains my number 1 choice as I believe that the education won't change. If they are keeping the majority of their faculty, not much should really change. Why mess with something that works fine right?

I am concerned with them merging with Rowan but I have faith that the UMDNJ SOM admin will try to preserve an already thriving program.

Yeah, they have a huge waitlist now. I registered last week and it was for a waitlist spot. They sent me an email saying I could attend some of the other events that are not a part of the major conference. I won't be able to make it however. You could try contacting them and seeing what they say.

I'm OOS. Love all the stuff I hear about the faculty supporting its students. I went to an undergrad where it was hard to even get the attention of the faculty since there were about 200-300 students in each class. Really hoping for a med school where I can find some good mentors.

You're welcome! Some OOS people already got interview invites so I am sure you will too. I think the turn-around time I've been seeing is about two weeks or so. Good luck with everything!

From what I've heard/witnessed, the UMDNJ admissions process is heavily weighted on tangible scores such as gpa and mcat so I would definitely apply.

I was told they would be in two weeks from when I got the acceptance call. So I would be expecting them to come in next week or so. Then we get two weeks to send in the deposit I believe.
