I haven't seen a New Pathway waitlist thread yet, so I thought I'd go ahead and start one.

Does anyone have any advice about the NP waitlist? Are there any current HMS students who were admitted off of the waitlist or have insight into if there is anything we can do to help our chances? I plan on sending a letter of intent, although I don't know how much that will help.

If anyone decided not to stay on the waitlist or anyone decided not to attend HMS, please post to give us hope.

Let's also keep each other updated if/when there is any waitlist movement.

Fellow HMS NP wait-lister here.. keeping my fingers crossed :luck:

Best of luck to you RedSoxFan :luck:

Anyone else??

hey sen and redsoxfan, I'm here with you...

wow, we have a really lame waitlist thread...=)

here's some good news. Some people waitlisted for NP has gotten into the HST program. So, the waitlist of NP is actually shorter than what it is? 🙂

Just a rumor, but New Pathways people have higher than the 60% chance listed on the paper. Firstly, the final count will be around 50 who decide to stay on the waitlist. Also, a person doing HST admissions stated that the yield for HST is close to 100%. The only reason they have a large waitlist for HST is because they feel those people should receive some sort of recognition. Because the waitlist is 40-60% for the total, HST+NP waitlisters, it makes getting into NP close to 80%, if the 100% yield to HST is correct. Finally, the waitlist is like a purgatory. You might have to prove yourself during the next few months via grades, awards, publications, etc. Send a letter of intent with a list of good reasons why you want to go to NP, other than "it is the #1 school". I'd say about 3/4 of those on the waitlist send them. Anyways, you have a really good chance of getting in. I know about 35 people who got off the waitlist last year and are attending HMS. So good luck to you all.

No offense to Jack, but I'd take this with a grain of salt. Jack is the one who told us that Harvard acceptances come in small envelopes, when they came in nice big ones...

Also, I read a waitlist thread from 2002 that said only 15 people came off the waitlist in 2001.

No offense Jack...but it's not a rumor. couple other HSTers and I have been waitlisted for np and we are going to HST. So..yea 😀

That's good news for us NP waitlisters with no acceptance to HST...Thank you! 🙂

However, I have to doubt there is THAT (35) many people who get off the waitlist. 😳

Jack and Chocolate...are you guys also on the waiting list? Welcome to the club lol.

I did an search through mdapplicants and saw that 9 people said they were waitlisted (NP and HST), of which only 5 said they were going to stay on. I know this is a small sample size, but since there are 85-90 people on the waitlist total, may be only 50 will stay on.

I have a bit of trouble believing that HST yield is close to 100% though, because many of those people will have been accepted MD/PhD elsewhere, and might take the MD/PhD offer at another school. However, I could be wrong.

And if 40-60% of waitlisted candidates get accepted, as it said on the FAQ, I don't find it hard to believe 35 people got accepted last year (although that could be NP and HST). 34 is 40% of 85...hopefully more will get accepted this year!

So for those of you staying on the wait list...are you guys going to send a letter of intent? Anything else? Is there anything @ Harvard that is similar to the "second interview w/Dean Frantz" that is the key to getting in??

I am sending a letter of intent...what could it hurt? I don't know about the possibility of a second interview...and truth be told, I don't think I could have had a better interview than I did, and wouldn't want the opportunity to make a bad impression at this point...

I think a letter of intent is a must -- especially with such a small number on the waitlist. I don't think that a second interview is possible. I'd also have to agree with Jack and sen about the waitlist -- hopefully we can all be classmates next year! 😀 :luck:

That would be nice 😀

Hey sen, how do you do a search for waitlists on MDapps? I thought you could only search for interview or acceptance?

Yeah, my resources haven't been that good. I often get it from a friend who gets it from a Harvard pre-med tutor who talks with admissions officers. So do take it with a grain of salt

Is anyone doing anything more than sending a LOI?

Hey NP waitlisters,

I got off the waitlist around June 20th last year. I sent in a letter of intent and updated them as to my activities, etc. I sent these things in mid April, I think. I had pretty much wrote hms off, but I made it. I wish I could tell you how many people got in from the waitlist for the class of 2009. I personally know a few, but it rarely comes up in conversations at this stage.

PM me with questions. I have a test this week so I might be little busy.

Don't give up. The NP waitlist is not the kiss of death. In fact, I think Harvard tries to make sure there's a good probability of getting in, unlike some schools.

Sparky: Thanks so much for posting! You give us hope. Did you do anything other than send a letter or intent?

Lexy: I will be sending a letter of intent, I think in early/mid-May. Unfortunately, I don't have much include update-wise, as I've been working this year, so there isn't too much for me to say. However, I will be sending a letter or rec from my boss...i've been working here since June, so I didn't have a letter in my original file, and I don't have too much else to add.

Is anyone doing anything else?

The question I asked earlier referring to the 2nd interview w/Dean Frantz @ Columbia was poorly worded. I know that Harvard doesn't do second interviews (they said something along those lines in the FAQ)...but is there anything at harvard that is the ticket to getting in off the waitlist??

Chocolate: There isn't a direct way to search...I went through all the profiles of people who interviewed @ HMS. I know, I'm obsessive lol.

I did the same thing! I think we are all a little certifiable at this point in time!

.

Why are you waiting until May to send it?

No problem! Hopefully you all will be coming to hms! I remember debating whether or not to send another letter of rec. I already had all my best letters out, so I decided not to dilute them with a letter that didn't add much. It's a tough decision.

Ok, so what I sent was:

A letter of intent, explaining WHY harvard (I emphasized leadership in medicine). Be specific if you can. Tell them what your plans are. Oh, they seem to love people who are into international health. I am not one of them, but if you are, let them know!

A CV. This is where I basically updated the committe as to my activities since AMCAS. I made is look as professional as possible.

A cover letter, explaining the contents of my update.

I called once to see if they got it. They did, and I just let it go. I remember thinking...gee, it's June 1 and no word...they must be done. But don't give up. I think they start looking at files in the middle of May. They probably don't make offers til June.

It's not a ranked waitlist, but I think it is a good idea to show strong interest. I wanted to give the committee something to look at, which is why I sent the CV.

If you have any kind of publication or abstract, tell them about it!

OK, I am rambling...

I will check this thread out periodically!

Sparky

Hi all. I'm also on the NP waitlist boat along with all of you guys! HMS doesn't get much movement on its waitlist, but there are always a few spots that open up. So some of us will be very lucky, but it's not worth holding your breath over.

I'm already planning to attend another school!

I will be sending a paper in for publication soon, should I include this, or wait to see where it get accepted? Perhaps send another "mini" update?

Oh, I would definitely tell them about a paper you submitted. Tell them what journal, too. You might not have time to wait until the paper is accepted. But if it is, then you can let them know that, too!

bump

don't think we will hear for another month, but I am currious how people are feeling about the waitlist at HMS....what did everyone do while one the waitlist since march?

I sent a LOI and my final transcript....

I just found this thread and wanted to say good-luck to all of you waiting for word from HMS. There certainly weren't that many, but a number of the students I met at second look this year were still very undecided as to whether they wanted to go to Harvard NP or another school, and some were still deciding NP vs. HST. Obviously I don't know how many did turn down the NP offer, but I do know of two people (including myself) who have. Hopefully spots will open for you soon!

Thanks for the info and wishes dajimmers -- gives us a little hope! I am still remaining hopeful that I'll be taking the T to Longwood next year 🙂. :luck:

Thanks dajimmers...have fun in Michigan...

Thanks for posting dajimmers!! I"m sure you'll have a great time @UMich

I sent an additional LOR and transcript...I'm in the process of finishing my LOI (I hope its not too late, but they don't seem to admit people until June).

Has anyone called Harvard and found out if there are any spots/if anyone will be accepted off of the waitlist?? Since Dajimmers seems to be the only person on SDN who has turned down HMS this year, I'm worried that there may not be any spots...

i think it would be unlikely that in past years 45 -60 percent of the waitlist was accepted and this year no one was taken off the waitlist...but I guess it could happen

that being said. I have not called Harvard about how many people will likely be taken off the waitlist this year...if you do let us all know

also, according to the dropped acceptance thread, there are two people on SDN who turned down their spot at Harvard

I try to be optimistic...

I called on Wednesday and they told me that they had not finished entering all the information into their system, so I will call back again next week and let you know what they say. I am sending my final transcript and an "update" letter (I already sent a LOI) next week -- I definitely don't think it's too late. :luck: :luck:

Hang in there, everyone! I also talked to students at revisit weekend who were undecided. I remember feeling let down when I hadn't heard anything by the end of May, but remember, the committee takes its time. I didn't hear until the third week of June.

Hey everyone!

Just reading this gives me some of my old butterflies back... I have my fingers crossed for all of you.

Just wanted to throw in my two cents: at revisit, a LOT of the people I talked to were still very much undecided, and at least two were decided on going somewhere else. I'm sure spots will open up... like Sparky said, it sounds like it could take a while so not to lose hope.

So... keep the faith and good luck!!! :luck:

Does anyone have any information yet about the waitlist? Any indication of when or how much movement there will be??

I sent a LOI in last monday, so I'll call sometime later this week to check that it was placed in my file and see if I can find out if they have an indication of how many spots they'll have etc...but has anyone else already asked anything?? Any news??

i called last week to ask about the amount of waitlist movement and they told me, "we don't have that information at this time"

hoping for good news soon! :luck: :luck:

Someone told me that SDNers didn't post til end of June for getting off this waitlist. Is that true? Where would I find this info?

if you have way too much time on your hands, then you can look this up to varify, but what i found when i did a search on sdn was that the students on the waitlist (majority) heard around June 20th of last year. Apparently, they received an email from admissions before the admissions met saying something to the effect of: we are going to meet soon, are you still interested?" my guess is they do this to be sure that they keep their numbers of those accepting their acceptance up....

Yea if you look in the thread titled **Official Waitlist Movement Thread 2006 (complete with 2002-2005 Info)**, you'll find that in the past people have been accepted to Harvard on 6/26 and 6/29. I haven't checked the old threads yet, but I will soon.

I can't believe its going to be almost a month before anyone hears...ug.

I called and they stated to expect the same type of schedule as last year, namely to wait until June 20th.

the wait is killing me...why must they take so long???

News from HMS: Not sure where jackb was getting his info from, but I called HMS and heard directly from the admissions office that they have already started taking people from the waitlist and that the possibility for acceptance off the WL will continue through mid-July. At this point, they don't know if they're taking more people at all though...

That's a little surprising, especially since their yield for waitlist is 40-60% (about 25 people) but nobody has responded on SDN. Don't know why they are giving different info to us but I can name the specific person I talked with.

oh, sad...

My Life is stained by sin and selfishness. I am obsessesed with myself and getting into medical school. It is all I think about. Please forgive me. Please.

I am interested to hear who you talked with since they gave you different info from what they gave me. I actually don't know who I talked to, but it was a male member of the admissions office who answered the phone. Maybe it was that same guy who scheduled all of our interviews...Paul Angelini or something

don't be too sad! they didn't say they weren't accepting anyone else, they just said they weren't sure what would happen over the next month and couldn't make accurate predictions

now i am confused... so did it sound as if they had filled the class with people off the waitlist and they are simply waiting for confirmation from those people, or they had yet to fill the class?

It sounded like they've had a few spots open up and have taken people off the waitlist to fill those spots but that more may drop or decide to defer, in which case they will take more people from the WL. This is all inference though...

The guy I talked to was somewhat vague, and the only concrete things he said were that they have started using the WL and that they'll send a letter (prob mid-July) to tell us when we no longer have a chance.
