2006 Ortho match thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Those of you who posted and matched, how many of you matched at your HOME school?
I'm just curious what the likelihood is to match at another school, IF that is what I desire.

Well, if you only get 2 interviews, and one is at you home institution, your connections at home make it more likely you will get accepted there. But if you get 20 interviews, and rank your own school last, you will almost certainly match to another school. But what if you get 2 interviews, both being at other schools - In this case if you were to match, you would have a 100% chance of matching at a non-home institution.

We don't have enough information about your situation to answer this question for you.

Also, some schools prefer to take their own students, and some prefer not to, and some have no preference.

First of all congrats to all that have matched into Ortho residency programs. I am a senior still at undergrad, I have been accepted to Boston University and Temple University, I am leaning towards BU because I felt that I would receive more support academically from the faculty...(I saw this and I was told by D-2s from BU, however told by D-4s from Temple that the faculty are not very supportive when it comes to academics)...because I am interested in specializing. The cost is very high, but what can do then look for scholarships now (which I am doing).

I am open to any suggestions/advice on what to do now to improve my application so when it is time to apply to PASS, I have a lot under my belt to make me competitive.

Or, can you all be very generous enough to let me know what you did, you can PM me if you want to remain anonymous.

Thanks in advance!

Anyone in ortho, please reply....
👍 👍

ended up taking a non match position after discussions with my interviewed "match" participants.......felt like "a bird in the hand" applied here even though I had what I considered extremely good vibes from the match programs

So you will be a D-1 next fall? Congrats. First off, I don't know much about BU or Temple, but I don't think that either one has an "advantage" for specializing. But if you will enjoy one more than the other, then that is good. How much more expensive is it, though? I don't know, but I know that BU is very expensive (if not one of the most expensive).

As for what you need to do, the general advice for any residency is this: Rock your national board exam (Ideal = 95+). Be in the top of your class. (Ideal = Top 5-10%). Have some extracurricular activities (Ideal = Published research). Have a good personality and be easy to work with. (Ideal = don't be an a$$)

Before someone jumps in to say it, please note that while these are ideal, they are not necessary to get into ortho. But, having the ideal scores helps you stand out from the other applicants that don't have it, so theoretically you will get more interviews, and greater chance of acceptance. But, there are applicants every year that don't have these stats and get in. It just is a little harder.

Thank you for the info, I actually had lunch with a D-2 from Temple yesterday and she told me what I expected, Temple prepares you very well clinically, however didactics perspective the profs are not too helpful.

When do I actually begin research with profs at my dental school?
