**Official 2025 Ortho Pass/Interviews/Match/Non- match**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Current Monte resident here. Take this with a massive grain of salt lol
Really happy to be here (as are my co residents.)
Our PD is here and here only. He's also the GOAT. The program has only gotten better since he took over a few years ago.

I personally wouldn't take this at full value either.

1) You are speaking on behalf of all residents when in fact all are NOT really happy.

2) I too have heard about the new program director at Monte and all are not good reviews. One of the major issues that has been said throughout is that he has favorites. I had a visit set back in May but decided not to go because when I asked about the diversity, it was told that minorities rarely get admitted to that program; I believe there are 2 black girls in the program but they might be the first in the program history. And what's crazy about that is, he is a minority himself. He also seeks residents from "powerhouse" schools in the NE, which eliminates many students here in the west coast

3) I have heard about the tuition and the remaining amount of monies that you have to actually utilize to survive in New York city. Combine that on top of the burnout, no thanks.

4) I must cosign and say that there is a consensus on the strong clinical training. But is it really worth the mental strain?

Now mind you, I have not personally visited this program, but from what I have been told by those who had an externship or whom have matriculated through the program, all can't be that great AlignerGuy.
I fully support and agree with my co-resident’s comment. I respectfully disagree with the comments of you and (orthooooo123). As a current orthodontic resident, I can confidently say that my experience at Monte has been overwhelmingly positive. We are all very happy with the program, and I would choose Monte again without hesitation. It may seem biased, but I firmly believe that our program director’s leadership and the improvements he has implemented have made Monte one of the top programs in the country.

If you haven't visited the program or spoken directly with residents, it’s important to avoid spreading unverified rumors. It's possible that the timing of these comments, right after interview invites were sent, could reflect someone’s disappointment at not receiving an invite or an attempt to discourage others from applying. Regardless, the information shared is inaccurate.

Thank you for understanding, and I hope this clears up any misconceptions.

Does anyone know the match statistics for match rates as a function of # of interviews and % matching to their top or top 3 choices etc?
I saw some stats before but can't find them now. Thanks!

I believe it’s 80% match rate with 4-6 interviews.

The numbers vary per year, but in general 60% match first choice, 20% second choice, 12% third choice.

Where did you get the information that it's around 80% match rate with 4-6 interviews? Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any statistics that would imply this.

Does anyone know of any cases where someone matched with only 1-2 interviews? Trying to hold hope but probs smart to start coming up with a backup plan haha!

Yes. There is a guy at Buffalo who applied to 20+ programs, invited to only one interview, and MATCHED. You got this... Good luck!!

just curious, what is the possibility of open post-match positions ?

Has anyone received a follow-up email from Howard on what time their interview is?

All of them ?
I'm not sure. I just know someone who received an acceptance from them recently. I'm assuming all of them, but I have no clue.

Edit: You are talking about all the acceptances to JU right? JU is non-match so they can send out their acceptances before the match date.

Thoughts on having the same interviews with fellow colleagues/classmates?

I don't think it is a bad thing. Last year this was the case from my school and 6/7 of the people who were accepted are currently attending an ortho program with at least 1 other classmate for dental school. (2 people per ortho program for 3 different programs).

Name of Ortho Program: Northeast Program
Dental School Attended: Southeast Program
Year Earned DMD/DDS: Graduation 2025
International Student (yes/no): No
NBDE Part I/II scores: INBDE Pass
GRE Score: 155/148/4.0
Class Rank: 30/100
Match/Non-Match: Match & Non-Match
Externship(s)/where: 4 externships (1-2 days long) at my top 4 schools
Research: Total of 5 research projects with presentations at my dental school's research day + presenting at ADEA annual session
Extracurriculars:
Years of general dental and ortho assisting in high school & college, a LOT of volunteering, first third-year dental student at my program to provide clear aligner therapy for patients, a lot of local ortho shadowing, was on multiple school committees, peer tutor, student ambassador, ortho club president.

Had very good LOR, and a very unique and well written personal statement. Visited my top ortho programs for externships starting in my sophomore year. Visited some of the programs multiple times and made myself known to the residents and faculty. Found a program I felt fit me and made every effort to show them my interest in joining the program.. it worked out. Don't let your class rank discourage you if you are not in the top 10%. Myself and others on this forum are proof that you dont need to be in the top 10% of your class to be accepted into an orthodontic program. People are more than just test scores and there are programs that value people's work ethic outside of just studying for an exam. Going to visit programs is one of your biggest advantages in getting into a program, but also in finding a program that fits you. Interviews are great, but going to visit before hand really helps you know if you and the program are a fit for each other.

Question about match- if you rank a program, and you match there, do you still have the option to decline and reapply elsewhere next cycle, (assuming you can't reapply to that program)?

If you decline, you cannot accept any other position in the same year, which MATCH binds. You can accept the non-match position (same year) or apply the following year. This has to be communicated directly with the program. The program will send out the offer letter after the MATCH results—if you don't sign, the spot will either stay vacant, or the program director has the option to send it to the post-match open position.

I thought you aren't able to apply to MATCH the following year if you do not accept the match position?

What does this mean? "Your list was not certified by the November 15th 11:59 PM EST deadline. You are not active in the match"

I thought I submitted it?
Did you change your list after certifying? If you did, you needed to have re-certified it to be active. If you are certain that you certified your list and have the email confirmation, I would contact match services asap.
