Does USF invite all waitlistees to their second look day? I just got the invite and am looking to feel special since they will no longer tell you where you are on the list. 😛

I just got the same invite. Maybe it's their new way of telling us we're on the higher side of the waitlist??...I guess we can only hope...

Maybe I'll see you guys there? 🙂

has anyone had an interview invite recently? are they interviewing for the waitlist now? thanks in advance!

we can only assume that if there were ppl that were waitlisted that didn't get that email, it really is weird to send a second look invite to those that haven't been accepted yet. I wish that they would just tell us where we are on the waitlist.

In a lot of these essays you can just give a generalized explanation which works esp. if all the bad grades were within a given time period and not spread out.

If you have a few B- grades that are clumped together, maybe explain them together or something?

most were freshman year and first part of sophomore year... hopefully that's decent enough

The problem is that there have been so many changes with USF adcom in the last several years. First it was Dennis Ledford leaving but that wasn't as big of a deal cuz Eduardo Gonazlez is awesome.

Then it was REl leaving the role of Director of admissions. This prompted last year's replacement Dr. Koehler who then hired Leila Amiri to be associate director only to be moved back somewhere else. Meanwhile John Schoppmann was recruiter and he was transferred to the office of Bryan Bogner. Then to top things off before in REL's day Dean specter was Dean of Admissions and Student Affairs. like 5 years ago or more Dr. Ted Williams was Dean of Diversity Initiatives in the med school. when he quit dr. wathington took over and then she quit to be in a position in Tally. Then she came back but they didn't hire her to her original position even though she is still part of USF Health, and Dean of Edu affairs was different. now they have one Vice Dean of all of those sections so she is both dean of admissions and director of admissions. Her name is Alicia Monroe. She's a Fam. Prac. MD like Dr. Gonzalez.

So you can see all the internal changes that keep on going on. In REL's day they called you every monday for an interview for the following week. Now its a 3 week advance notice for interview invites. Now they are changing the whole ranking thing up too.

Guju, time is passing and the mind gets foggy........we interviewed on Monday so we could not have called on that day to schedule interviews, in reality it was more like ~Thursdays~ were the most common calling for interview days. Also we worked to schedule 3 weeks in advance during that time. Otherwise, keep up the good work.

yah what I meant was that most of my friends got the call the week before not 3 weeks before. At least that's how I remember them telling me. Not trying to state the days. You guys might have known who you were going to invite that much in advance but whenever my friends got the invites they told me they were called only the week before their interview dates. So if it is as you say it was, then that is new to me.

But thanks for clarifying. Just trying to get the point across that USF has had soooooooo many internal changes that are long and winded with people being moved around in different offices or to different schools etc. that things changing constantly don't surprise me at this point.

Well, was there anyone on the wait list that didn't receive the email?

That is what i would like to know also

I just realized you are on the waitlist at both UCF and USF. Dude I really really feel for you!!! I pray you will get off one of them and get into a Fl. school this year. Good luck!! You seem nice from what I've read of your posts in the UCF thread. I'm sorry to see that you have more waitlists then acceptances but here is to hoping they turn to acceptances. 🙂

Thank you for your kindness and hopeful words, I understand that its just part of the process. Im just thankful for the acceptances that I have, everything else is just a bonus in my book. I would love to stay in Florida; UCF would be a dream come true. Good Luck to you too.

I just got off the phone with the admissions office and decided to be a little more aggressive in my inquiries. At first all they were telling me was "no, unfortunately even though we said to call back in January, we do not have a ranking for the wait list"

Then I asked when they will have it, and they said most likely as late as March. Then I asked what are the criteria upon which they base the wait list rankings. The answer to that was that it is different every year (apparently they are currently in the process of deciding what criteria to use this cycle). I was told that it is a combination of everything - GPA, MCAT, application, etc. It sounded like he was trying to say that the number you received when the committe voted on you determines your spot on the waitlist, but I don't see how that would work.. if there are 10 members on the committee, there will be lots of people who got 5/10 votes, 7/10 votes, etc. So I think that whatever ranking they give you is either A) completely arbitrary or B) a combination of EVERYTHING they know about you. - great odds, huh?

Anyway, he also told me that usually they start to see movement around April, as everyone has to give their final decisions by May 15th. Therefore, following reason... if we call around March or April they should be able to tell us our ranking.

On another note, I also got the invitation to the second look, so I think they send it to everyone that has been interviewed.

Good luck, everyone!

So it seems that USF has invited all accepted and waitlisted applicants to their second look. Is anyone from the w/l going to attend either second look day (Feb 27th or Mar 20th)? I would like to, but I couldn't help but have some thoughts... first off; there are only 100 spots (50 for each day) available... thats not even enough for accepted ppl, and secondly.. OBVIOUSLY I like you USF, the decision is not in my hands to choose you, you need to choose me! Geez. I don't understand this strange form of torture (inviting w/l ppl to second look...)

Your thoughts, fellow watilist-ees? 🙂

One more thought...

I got THREE emails inviting me to this second look day. Did anyone else experience this? The first one I thought I recieved in error (because I am w/l) then I found out that other ppl w/l got it when I got the second invite. I successfully convinced myself not to attend second look (I know how much I like USF and am very familiar w/ them and felt it would be somewhat of a torture knowing this and knowing that I am not accepted haha), until I recieved the third invitation. Blast. Now I'm considering going. What do you guys think?

Keep in mind that even though there are not enough spots for second look that you are always allowed to have a private second look by scheduling an appt with Leila or someone in her office. Before I used to see John Schoppmann going around giving people second looks individually with their parents. But you know Leila might also do this as well as long as it is not the day of interviews or the day when she is giving out acceptances which are Mon. Wed. So if you don't go there is always another chance to look at the school before deciding.

I suspect they let W/L people get in on it cuz half the time a lot of their actual students were people off of the W/L and they know these people will like to see it in case they are taken off. But that's just an opinion. Don't take that to be fact.

im on the waitlist and still going. I think it'll be a good chance to meet other successful pre-meds. USF accepts alot of ppl off there waitlist anyway and its one my top choices. It doesnt hurt to get a better feel for the school.

I also called the admissions office and talked to them about it and they strongly advised me to go. Its not a bad idea to put yourself out there again, maybe make a good impression and they'll remember ur name when moving ppl off the waitlist for acceptances.

I got the three emails too, and had written it off for similar reasons, but now I am also considering it! USF is my top choice at this point and it will be frustrating to be there again while still waitlisted.

Does anyone have any idea of the number of applicants they usually take off the wait list each year?

A lot of times roughly 50% of the actual matriculating class is off the waitlist. that's about 60-65 students. That's how it was in REL's day but perhaps if he's around he could confirm or correct me.

I believe he said sometimes it is more people but a lot of people drop even the waitlist positions because they get into other schools they may also be waitlisted at that are higher up on their choices. I remember REL posted about this in one of the Fl. threads but don't remember which thread it was.

hey guys,

im a first yr at usf.. lemme know if you have any questions

last year, usf got to the middle of the waitlist..
i was also waitlisted, and got in around june.

my stats.. : 12BS, 10P, 9V
~3.7gpa

Thanks for the info! I really appreciate it. 🙂

Also Ankit brings up a good point in his post right below this one which I'm quoting.

I'm not sure of the overall total numbers but if there are 3 tiers to the waitlist, then the top tier almost always is completely taken off if you include those who drop their name off of that list because they decided to go elsewhere afterall and about the first half of the mid tier have been taken off from what I've seen in the past. I think its safe to assume if you are completely low tier waitlisted you won't get in, if you are mid tier it depends where you are. If you are high tier there is a good chance you'll get off.

That said these days it seems tougher cuz of the economic crisis so it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

Speaking of waitlist movement, does anyone know if they are giving the tier of waitlist you are on yet or if they are still not going to do it at all?? Can someone find out somehow? Someone I know is on the waitlist and afraid of biting the bullet and calling to find out.

Did any of your find out anything or can you find out something if possible?? THANK YOU!!!!!!

gujuDoc, I was wondering about this as well. They told me they did tiered waitlists in November, and then in December seemed irritated when I asked what rank on the WL I was and said they no longer rank the WL. I'm going to wait until all of their interviews wrap up for the year, and then ask again (perhaps they are waiting until they interview everyone before doing the ranking???) Who knows... If I find out anything, I will def let you know 🙂

THank you my friend would appreciate it and is scared of calling himself. Can one of you volunteer to call and find out for me so I can pass that info onto him?????

I'd appreciate it forever.

Has anyone settled the issue about whether or not USF sends out 2nd looks to all their W-L applicants.....or...maybe just the ones in the top-tier?

We (the students) have heard that it's to everyone who has been offered an acceptance or been put on the as-of-what-I-know-right-now unranked waitlist.

How can the waitlist be unranked? When the Committee votes students are given a final score. Doesn't that score determine if the student is accepted, and if not where on the waitlist he falls?

Keep in mind USF has been under so many changes in the last few years that they may or may not be doing things the same way as before. Also keep in mind that a lot of schools decide how to rank people on the waitlist later in the cycle after they've interviewed more people. Also keep in mind some schools don't even rank the waitlist or constantly are moving people around on the waitlist based on other applicants who come later or other factors.

It is complicated i know.

Like GujuDoc said, USF has gone through and keeps going through a bunch of changes in their admissions office. Best to contact the office to get the timeline of when they are going to rank the list.

For everyone that is interested: I called about a week ago and the woman I talked to said that they 'don't rank their waitlist' and a ranking would NEVER be released. Knowing that they ranked the waitlist last year, I kept on pushing for answers and she said that I must be thinking of the composite score the admissions board gave me when they reviewed my file. She told me this would never be released either. Sounds like we're already ranked by the composite score but they must just not want to release that information this year due to restructuring, etc, you name it.

At USF, your composite score at the adcom meeting is how you are ranked. It is correct that this information is confidential and never released. That score cannot be changed under any circumstances, so anything that you want to be used in your evaluation should be submitted prior to this time. The meeting is Tuesday following your interview.

Mike is correct with the committee score. Mike it is very evident that the game has changed since we were there. Since the new VP of Med Ed came to town they do not appear to be very forthcoming with information after the interview. They do not choose to be open about informing applicants of their prospects for post-interview admissions.

I certainly appreciated how forthright you were with information as an applicant (way back when!).

Agreed with this 110%!!!! It is soooo sad too. I liked it better how it was before but that is what happens when leadership changes. I saw this at the VA hospital across the street too when the vol. coordinator changed. The previous one was helpful but the new one while more organized was far less willing to help students get certain opportunities and ruined everything that everyone loved.

Oh well, I guess that's life. I hope everyone here on the waitlist and my friends who don't post that are on the waitlist get good news.

Maybe in a year or 2 USF will get their act together when there are no more rearrangements of admissions personnel and they know what they are doing better. But for now I can only hope the best for all of you. 🙂

It is like I told my friend, hang in there and it will happen for you guys. I wish you all :luck:

For anyone who is attending the second look next week, or has already attended, what do you think the attire is? I emailed the admissions office to find out and they said business casual. But I figured I would ask you guys just to see what people have generally worn.

Thanks!

I remember last year when I'd see people come for second look. If you are a male then a nice shirt and pant was enough with dress shoes. And if you were a girl, a nice pant and shirt or a skirt and shirt with dress shoes were good enough. That was the trend I saw in terms of what people wore.

I'd venture you don't need a suit or anything but don't come like grub like you are going to class. hahaha.

ok yea.. i was planning on wearing a shirt and skirt.

thank you!

Does anyone know when should the financial aid awards notice packages start coming.

It should be reasonably soon. I think I remember getting them in April/May. I believe that current students get theirs first, and then accepted students for the incoming first year class are the last to get them (since first year starts the latest).
