OK. Here's my recollection of the entire interview process for future interviewees, I hope it helps. Also, this will be more of a list format.

I drove to St. Louis and stayed at Olin Hall.

The guard at the front desk was very friendly. You are given the awesome Dis-Orientation book, a bag with toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash inside. Oh, and the key and the swipe card. Literally everywhere you go will require the swipe card.

The 2nd floor weight room has modern equipment, the bench press bench isn't very good, but otherwise the equipments themselves are fine. However, the room is more of a hallway, it's very narrow 🙁 The cardio room is excellent though.

The pizza party is nice, I was surprised by the turnout, there were about 40-50 med students/interviewees there. If pizza isn't your thing, there's an Applebee's 5 min walk away that closes at 11 PM.

7:15AM: The breakfast was essentially a chat with med students, you get a meal ticket and pick anything you want from the cafe. I should mention that a med student bought 6 eggs. He's smart (well duh, that's why he's in med school), egg white is widely agreed upon as the best source of protein, because almost all the egg white protein is digested and fully absorbed. I personally went with 1 egg and 6 strawberries, but there were lots of breakfast options.

7:45AM: Check in at admissions office, get your name tag and folder, the office will draw your routes for you on your map so you know how to get to places throughout the day. Your folder will include a "Wash. U. Rules! Ruler/Stressometer", I don't believe it's accurate, as I felt nervous yet the results read CALM.

8:00AM: Dean Dodson gives an orientation of WashU for about 30 minutes and goes over the curriculum, answers questions, etc. For the second half there's a financial aid info session by the financial aid office.

After this it depends on your schedule, you could potentially have an interview at 9:30 AM followed by a tour at 11:00AM, or an tour at 9:00 AM followed by an interview at 10:30 AM.

My interviewer was retired, so he only interview med school and residency applicants, but he was very accomplished during his career. The interview was very relaxing and essentially a chat, I found out he was familiar with aspects of personal statement, so that might be why he was my interviewer. We chatted about restaurants, St. Louis, WashU. Questions asked were:

How would your friends describe you
Describe your research
Whats the most important thing you've learned through research
Whats the most important thing you've done in undergrad

He never asked me why medicine or why WashU.

After that he answered my questions, and explained the application process, and walked me to the lunch area.

Noon: Lunch was good, very very good 🙂 Med students were there to chat with us. Dean Dodson came later on and sat at our table to eat and chatted with us, and walked us back to the admissions office.

I was there on the same day as Gloryfield so I'll add my little bit to the very well described experience above

About 30% of interviewees at WashU will have two interviews. There is no reason for this besides random distribution so don't freak out or anything. I believe that it is just like a quality control type deal where they like to have two interview impressions to gauge them against each other. I had two interviews, one was closed file, so it was bascially me talking about myself, and was very relaxed, warm, welcoming, and fun. The other was open-file, and my interview knew almost every detail about my app, but we talked about all sorts of things, from medically related stuff, to sports, the news, the economy, and all sorts of random things. It was very fun, relaxing, conversational, and not stressful at all.

The interview process at wash U, in my opinion, gets a 10/10. They really go a long way to make you feel welcomed and relaxed. The food is great (really) and there are tons of med students to talk to, everywhere. You'll enjoy yourself a lot.

Haha, I had three pieces of that beef thingie, whatever it's called, it was SOOOO tasty.

mmmm...I had fried ravioli as an appetizer (our med student encouraged us to go all out) and pasta w/ chicken. It was yummy.

To whoever is going to interview: don't stress. It is chill the whole time and do not feel the need to cram in a whole bunch of ethics questions or whatever.

thanks for the all the info guys! i'm at WashU right now in the library, getting in some last minute web-surfing 🙂

I just finished reading the entire Dis-O book a moment ago. Very fun and entertaining to read 🙂

I had two interviewers. The second, and more senior was Dr. Plax

He was very nice. He remained in email contact with me post-interview, and was the one to give me my acceptance call. Consider yourself fortunate if he is your interviewer, he will fight for you 👍

Well I haven't gotten an acceptance call... my undergrad has yet to get any MD acceptances, but other than that the same goes for Dr. Ferguson for me.

Hey, how do you know whether or not anyone from your undergrad has gotten any acceptances? Do they keep a running tally? Or do you just have a couple of friends who also interviewed at WashU?

I'm just curious. I'm anxious to hear back from them, but I guess I'm glad others are in the same boat too.

Yeah I had him as my Quality Control Interviewer. He is really really nice and good to talk to.

He was amazing!... He has made an attempt to keep in touch via email after the interview, and has even tried to give me advice if I don't hear back very quickly.... I'm sure he does this with all his interviewees...great recruitment tool.

Hey I was wondering if anyone knew how long it takes to get from the airport to the school via MetroLink? Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure how long it took me...It wasn't more than 30 or 40 minutes though (including walking)...the stop goes right to the school basically (you go up the stairs and it's on the same block as school/Olin hall). I would highly recommend taking it, no hassle.

It kinda depends when you catch a train. They run at different intervals at different times. Like more trains run during business travel hours (right before and right after work). But it is probably 40 minutes max, but more like 25 or 30. I think I have done it in 20 minutes at the least. But it is definitely the way to travel. It literally drops you off at the medical school. Go up the stairs and turn left and you are there. I believe it is only 2 dollars each way. Remember to get your ticket validated by the red machines at the train platform though!

AFAIK, Wash U undergrad doesn't offer a tally or service that notifies who has or hasn't gotten interviewed/accepted at WUSM. So I have no idea how she is making blanket statements like that unless she has an inside source 😕
she didn't say she went to Wash U undergrad 😕

Thanks for the info on the transportation. I think the interview day ends around 3 or so... so looks like I should be able to catch the 5:45 flight back home, eh?

So, has anybody's status page changed since that first day?

Doesn't look like it...anybody know when the west coast committee is meeting?? I hope it's before the holidays. 🙁

I just checked my status page and looks like I got an interview! 😀 However, I have not received an email about an interview invite...does it come eventually? Also, when time does the interview day start and end? I know it depends on what time your interviews are, but what is the absolute latest that the day can end? Thanks!

Last year, my interview invite didn't show up for a month! The day should end at about 3pm (budget for 4, just in case) and starts around 8am.👍:luck:

Does anyone know whether any west coast decisions have been made? Or when they will be?

It seems like no one's heard anything since that initial batch of acceptances that went out to people in the northeast. I'm anxiously waiting for midwest decisions here 🙁

I called earlier today and they said that no decision was made yet. No other info...

This thread has been so quiet.. seeing it get bumped made my heart skip a beat.

WashU has no love for the rest of us. :[

When did you interview? within the last 2 weeks?

im midwest and i interviewed a week b4 thanksgiving

I received a really nice hand-written note from one of my interviewers (I had two) a few weeks ago. "Congratulations on your acceptance into Washington University School of Medicine. I take special pleasure when someone I interview is accepted here and I look forward to seeing you next fall."

Today I checked my mail and I had another letter from WashU from my other interviewer. Guess what it said? "Congratulations on your acceptance into Washington University School of Medicine. I take special pleasure when someone I interview is accepted here and I look forward to seeing you next fall."

...

For those of you still waiting, best of luck! 🙂

where you go for school?

hurry up wash u. show the west coast some lovin.

soon.

interview invite today 🙂 so didn't see it coming!

Any post-interview news? I called today to ask about when to expect a decision, and all I got was "you can hear anytime between now and April."

we need to somehow orchestrate a plan to get the admissions office to tell us when the west coast meeting will be.

let's get some ideas rolling.

i say we have miss cleo call them. she can figure out anything if she hears your voice.

do u have 2 turn in ur dean certification b4 u recive a decision?

Note that the next committee meeting is:

Thursday, December 18, 2008

Presumably acceptances, etc. are sent out the next day.

its public info, just look at his/her account name, duh 😀

Since Wash U was originally telling people "after the holidays" when we called to ask awhile ago, I'm just going to assume silence until January. Then, if we really do hear something on Jan19th, it'll be a pleasant surprise. Maybe the earlier batch was just a small exception. *shrug* UCLA was telling people "January" but a small batch came out last week. Maybe WashU is like that, too.
