Hello,

So I am taking Spanish, which is a 4-credit course at my University. Most liberal arts courses are only 3-credits.

They did this because in addition to two lectures, we have a recitation, and a mandatory attendance to a 1-hour language lab, where we record Spanish-language conversations onto tape, to be graded.

Should I check off "...and lab" or is that just for science labs?

Lab refers to BCP labs. Language Labs do not count.

Is it still worth it to use interfolio

If you're applying to a school that doesn't have AMCAS, and/or think you might not get in this year, then yes, it's worth it.

I can't find an answer to this--well, at least not a clear one

I have had my transcrits sent to AMCAS, and I have enter all of my courses, but I have yet to submit my application--will AMCAS verify my grades when they receive my transcript?

thanks

No, AMCAS will verify your grades when all your transcripts are in and you submit your application with payment.

Hey, I have another quick question

Will schools you've listed be notified when you submit to AMCAS, or are they not notified until AMCAS has verified your application?

AMCAS sends applications to individual schools starting mid- to late-June.

Do I send the LOR or does my professor send it directly to AMCAS?

Your professor sends it directly. You should provide a stamped envelope if they wish to snail mail it, and at least instructions for how to upload onto their Interfolio or AMCAS (depending on which you're using).

Is there any harm in listing personal beliefs? For example, one of my ECs was an internship in which I co-directed a documentary on an interfaith/unity program. The program involved muslim and jewish students/islam and judaism, and focused on issues within north american muslim and jewish communities, relationship between muslim and jews, etc (I'm not Jewish or Muslim-my family is one of them, but I have not said that on AMCAS). Is this okay?

Also, I'm involved in a program that helps women who were/are victims of domestic violence. My mom was a victim of domestic violence-is that alright to mention? Sorry if I'm sounding weird/paranoid, I'm just a newbie 😀

Why wouldn't it be? It's something that matters to you.

The round bullets that I use in my activities section turn into " marks after I save them, has anyone else noticed this? Is this normal?

That's because formatting doesn't transfer over into the AMCAS application, which is why they suggest you write your descriptions and essay in a plaintext format, such as with Wordpad.

just wondering.. do most applicants fill up all 15 slots on the works/activities section? I only have 8 and it feels so skimpy compared to others on the forum.

sorry if this was asked, but i was also wondering on the course work section, do they use what you put as the course classification to determine your sGPA? thanks

I have 11 slots filled up right now. I had 8 or so when I applied the first time. You don't have to have all 15 filled up, that's just the maximum you can have.

And yes, they use the course classification (they'll change something if it doesn't meet the requirements) to determine your various GPAs.

I have another question:

If we are sending in our LORs to AMCAS via Interfolio - how do we go about doing this?

The instruction booklet says we need to have our letter writers send the letters into AMCAS themselves from their Interfolio account but I've read here that the student can do it.

Also, if we CAN just send in the LORs ourselves from Interfolio, is there a sheet we need to include with it or that Letter ID, and can this be done electronically - I'm really confuse, lol.

Upload to interfolio. Start a delivery. Search for AMCAS. Start the delivery. The next page will give you a slot to put in the Letter IDs for all your letters included in your delivery. Yes, it's all done electronically.

You're not supposed to send the letters yourself, because you are waiving your right to see them. They are confidential letters.

When does 2009-2010 amcas application cycle open?

I'm gussing first day to hand in our app would be similar to last year? around June 15 or something?

it's open now?

How come I see 2008-2009 application?

Do I just make changes on 2008-2009 application and resubmit?

Thanks for the help

I want to talk about writing recreationally, but I've also published two stories in the school literary magazine and have joined as a member and have helped them fix their constitution.

So, should I enter in my writing as an artistic endeavor with information about joining the magazine in details? Or should I enter it in as membership to the magazine as an extracurricular, with a note about enjoying to write recreationally in the description?

Whatever you think best fits the category.

Is it okey to use contractationss in EC description?

Can't ....cannot
hrs....hours
wk...week
3..three (the standard is to write out 1-10, in case you didn't know)
etc

I am just trying to save some space.
Is it considered poor writing style? Ofcourse I do not do that in my PS.

Alright, I ended up just putting my writing as an artistic endeavor as I've been writing longer than I've been a member of the magazine.

I have a second question. I've been involved in community service in a number of organizations. I've done the following:

Been a member of a community service fraternity, just as a brother

Done work through the prehealth organization and prehealth honors society at my school, both of which I've been a board member of and already talked about.

Am going to be an EMT

Am now a member of the Up Til Dawn Charity and am a board member.

So how should I cut that all up?

2 questions...

1. Do I just enter the abbreviated names on my transcript when entering my course. Or should I spell it out completely?

2. I took one AP test but I scored a 3 and didn't get any credit in college, do I include this in high post secondary work?

1. Different people have different opinions. For what its worth, I spelled all mine out to make it easier for adcoms to read, and went through no problems during verification. Others have left the abbreviated versions and went through no problems. Do whatever.

2. if its not on any college transcript, its unverifiable. So no.

When selecting each school, there is a deadline date for transcript. Is it deadline for when to submit the transcript to AMCAS or to the schools?

I thought you only sent in your transcripts after acceptance?

I think i misunderstood you....after acceptance? I was just talking about primarys...that date for transcripts has to be for the schools. For example, Creighton it says program deadline : Nov 1st Transcript dead line: nov 17th. It wouldnt make sense for the trasncript date to be for amcas, at least imo.

How do I use the same LOR from 2008-2009 cycle?

Can I carry them over to 2009-2010 cycle? or Do I have to get a new one?

AMCAS. They have to receive all your transcripts within about 2 weeks after the school's deadline for the primary. You have to submit your primary by the deadline. Hopefully you aren't waiting until November to send in your transcripts and primary, though. You'll be in a world of hurt if you do.

On the "course work" part of the application, do you write in the classes you have scheduled for the coming semester of college, or only classes you've already taken?

Also, I took 4 courses through another college in a foreign country, but the college was based in America. How do I go about entering that?

I don't see a difference?

Yes. And you can do it in your PS too (oh no, I started a sentence with "and"!🙄)

Dude. You're basically asking us to write your entries for you. Just do it so it makes the most sense.

All of this can be answered by reading the directions on AMCAS.

does private tutoring of an elementary school child okay to list? Obviously, it's not a big deal teaching gig, but still?

also, I will begin this summer so I haven't started yet.

Quick questions:

1) Took tons of APs in high school, but my college didn't accept AP credit... is there anything I can do to mention them (other than putting it in my personal statement)? Did I luck out here?

2) I noticed that I can add 1325 word descriptions for work/activities. Should this be treated as a mini-essay, and will med schools read over this as carefully as my medical school statement?

3) When I try to add the community college from which I took classes in high school, what should I select for "Program Type," since it's mandatory? I'm assuming "junior college" but I"m not certain.

Thanks =)

Are you going to begin before submitting AMCAS?

For the universities attended, i took summer school classes at community college for 2 summers, but i can only enter in one "attended from/attended to" date. I dont want to put 2005-2006, bc it looks like i went there for a whole year. I put down my first summer year june 05-aug 05, but what do i do about the second yr i took classes?

also, for one class i got CR (credit) written in the grade portion, so is it okay to write CR in the grade portion of the amcas app? (i also checked pass/fail under it)

and one more thing...i am considering weather as a natural science and psycholgy as a behavioral science on the apps, right??

thanks all! 🙂

Hello,

So I worked in a lab, as a paid undergraduate assistant, for 2 years. After 2 years, I began my own independent senior thesis project.

I was thinking of listing the first 2 years as "Employment - Non/Mil" and then putting my project (ongoing) under "Research/Lab."

The only problem I have from this is that if an adcom takes a quick glance at my EC, s/he will think I only have 1 year of lab/research "experience." This is important for me since I may want to apply to MD/PhD.

Thanks in advance for your reply!

I can only answer the first part, as I had the same question. Do put down 2005-2006; then make sure you check off "summer only." When you go ahead and enter the specific courses you took, you'll have to include the specific summer you took them. That will help clarify things.

Tutoring one kid is kinda like a stretch. It may look like you're padding your CV. Tutoring a class for semester or group of kids for an on-going period is ok to put down.

I'm starting this June, the month I will be submitting my AMCAS.

Well, I will be doing both TA for a class and a private tutoring of a kid, so I was thinking of lumping them both?

I'd still put the TA only. It carries more weight and good as a stand-alone. No need to enhance it.

i go to a school that sends commitee letter packets.
the earliest you can request for them is early august and they send them to schools mid august. does anyone go to a school like mine?

my question is, is there even a point finishing the amcas application super early if they won't receive my recommendations until august? i was planning on doing my amcas by june 15.

my second question is, is the procedure at my school typical? do other schools the recommendation letter packets out earlier?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but does anyone know how to get around the contact info for extracurrics/hobbies? I want to group my clubs in one box, intramurals in anothers, shadowing in another, etc...but, as far as start/end dates and contact names, how do I approach this? Each club has a different person as "director", and some have different start dates....any advice? I am only going to end up using 9-10 boxes/15, but I don't think each shadowing or club warrants its own individual box...

anxiousteen: send out your amcas as early as possible after you feel comfortable with the application...you will still get secondary apps back in july or so, and once you are ready with those essays, the committee will most likely have your letter ready...if you wait until august to submit your primary application, you wont get secondaries til september, and you probably won't be complete until october...

That sucks. You should still get your AMCAS in early though. Does your school realize it's hurting you a lot?
