does anyone have any news about the ranking for Yale's waitlist?
 
Does anyone know when we can expect the Yale waitlist to move? I know that May 15th, and the fallout thereafter, is an important date, but is there usually any movement before then?

I am very hesitant to jump in here, but you guys know about the 3-tier waitlist, right? Unless they have told you otherwise, they have always set a date when you can call in and find out if you are in Tier 1, 2 or 3.

I can tell you more, but don't want to intrude if this is an outmoded system. They used it last year and i can tell you some of how that went if you want.

Jut let me know.

it would be great if you could provide some insight about the whole wait list situation. Does Yale have appreciable wait list movement and are they keen on accepting letters of interest/intent?

I can only tell you about last year and a bit about the previous year. and it is only based on my own experiences and anecdotal evidence from others and on SDN. I have no inside info or anything so if people have other info, they should chime in.

Unless they have totally revamped their system from last year, in the next few weeks, they will set a date for you to call in and ask what tier you are in. It is a nightmare to get through. They will tell you Tier 1, 2 or 3. They told us that, in previous years, they have gotten through Tier 1 and into Tier 2.

BUT, before they even set the tiers -- and as I recall, in the next couple of weeks from now -- they accepted a few people. Think of them as above Tier 1. They used to call them something like "high priority" but they told us they had done away with that.

But, "a rose by any name." A very few people, hard to say how many, will likely hear pretty soon that they have been accepted. Some of them posted on SDN which was kind of discouraging when we didn't even have a tier yet!!!

[I am convinced that the reason they have a few spaces very early, and almost none later, is that many of their acceptees already know they are going elsewhere -- Harvard, JH, whatever -- and they decline the acceptance. Accordingly, there is not much movement focused around the May 15th date. Just my hypothesis]

Anyway, as far as I can tell, they took almost no one from Tier 1 and absolutely no one from Tiers 2 or 3 at the end of the day. I really lost track after I gave up, but i did check the waitlist thread every once and awhile. It was dead. I have no memory of any Tier i people posting that they got in.

Last year there was a guy on SDN from the previous cycle who claims that he was told "you'll get in any minute" right up until he had to pack and drive to Rochester. He did not get in. He was very bitter because he didn't get an apartment and it really messed up his first few weeks of med school -- emotionally and practically. Also, a friend of mine that same cycle was told "You are at the very top of Tier 2 and we always get into Tier 2." She didn't get in either.

Word to the wise: Stay on the waitlist; write LOIs; call; BUT move on with your life. Choose your favorite from your other acceptances and start to bond with it. I am VERY happy at my school and, i know everyone says this, but i believe it is a better place for me. I never even think about the schools i didn't get into at all!!!

Oh, I was in Tier 3, so I had no trouble moving on!!!!!!!! A blessing, as it turns out.

Good luck!! If you are waitlisted at Yale you must be fabulous and you will all be great doctors. You can get a residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital!!!

thanks for the info. It's kinda discouraging to know that so few people get in from the waiting list though..in the letter it says 25% of the class were from the waitlist. sigh.

i really find that 25% hard to believe, but it might be true. remember, any one of us only have our own experiences, the experiences of our friends, and SDN posts to go by. Also, Yale is very small, so 25% is only 25 people.

I remember about 4 or 5 SDNers posting acceptances from the waitlist. That could translate to 25 people nationwide.

I def recall, however, that all of those 4/5 SDNers were accepted BEFORE the tiering began.

Hi all,

I'm a first year med student at Yale and I just want to clear up some misinformation in this thread... I was accepted off the waitlist last year so I can tell you a little more about what I know.

There is a 3-tier system. However, the "tiering" is not done until early June. At most schools, most of the waitlist spots are given out soon after the May 15th deadline- that's the day that most people withdraw from a range of schools. Acceptances from the waitlist given out in June are usually from students who decided to defer a year or students who got off of other waitlists and then decide to turn down the school they are holding a place in.

This is the same situation at Yale. I was offered an acceptance in the last week of May. We were never given the waitlist numbers for our class, but just from counting people I know who got in off the waitlist- I would say at least 35% of the class is from the waitlist (and this may be as high as 50%) SO THE WAITLIST DOES MOVE A LOT!

I have heard of a couple people in my class who were on Tier 1. However, the vast majority of us were offered acceptances before the Tiers were made.

I rarely go on SDN anymore, but I will try to check this thread to see if more questions are posted. Also feel free to PM me. Good luck with the waitlist process!

I wish we had had that kind of info last cycle, though it wouldn't have helped me much. We were much more in the dark and found little help on SDN.

no news🙁 i sent an letter of intent to Mr. Silverman about 3 weeks ago and haven't get any reply. I emailed him though, maybe i should mail it so it looks more formal? i'm too scared to call...

anyone else?

Take this with a grain of salt...

Despite what we've all heard about how fantastic Yale's financial aid is, a lot of people were quite unhappy about their offers. Yale offered really great aid to their current first years, and they have to keep that up for 4 years. As a result of the crappy economic situation, they might not be able to offer as much aid to this incoming class.

A lot of ppl I talked to seemed to be deciding between Yale and another school with a better financial aid package.

This might be good news for those on the waitlist...?

Again, it's kinda speculation at this point, but I thought I would let you guys know...



Does anybody else have more accurate information?

I too am eagerly awaiting news, but to be honest the further away I get from my Yale interview the less I am drawn to YSM. My other acceptances and the "Second Looks" are starting to effect me. When I interviewed at Yale it was my #1, and remained there for a long time, even after the waitlist. Now that I have gone to second looks and imagined myself at other schools I am just not sure how I feel about Yale anymore. If I do get off the waitlist I sure owuld like to have something like a second look before I withdraw from my othe school. Any of you feeling the same way? How sick of the waiting game are you?

That's just it. I am not sure where I will be going. I am contemplating a mix of acceptances and waitlists from:
Columbia
USC Keck
Duke
and Yale.

Shemarty, are you set on UCSF?

Duke and Yale are pretty polar opposites!

I'm 99.99% set on UCSF, but I'm still waiting to hear back about Yale finaid. If Yale were free, which it won't be, I would go to Yale.

hey... i'm kinda opposite as u.. Yale remains my first choice even she made me waiting for so long. I hope eventually it's not just my wishful thinking... anyhow, ur other offers are amazing! u should be happy to go to any of them🙂 congrats!
 
Withdrew recently. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist! Yale is an incredible place.
 
A college friend of mine was WL in March and got a call from Silverman today offering her a spot in the class.

Pre-May 15th WL movement, it seems!

Did everyone who is on the wait list get an email from Mr. Silverman today (Sunday) at 4:37 PM asking you to call him about the status of your application at Yale Med? I got one.

columbiaORpenn: To answer yor question, I am on the waitlist and I did not receive an email form Mr. Silverman. I imagine it is better to receive that email than not. Any update on how that phone call went with Mr. Silverman?
 
Hey everyone,

Just letting you know that I got accepted off the wait list! Guess the email from Mr. Silverman is a good sign for anyone who gets it. The problem is that now I'm torn between schools: Columbia or Yale. I don't know what to do! I was pretty set on Columbia, but Yale is YALE, you know? Hm. What would people do in this situation, given that finances are the same?
 
congratulations! at this point, you should think about the main differences between these two programs, and decide which program best suits your needs, academic or otherwise. in my opinion, while yale and columbia are both highly regarded programs, there are some considerable differences. other SDNers have started a relevant thread:

General questions for anyone who know about this: What happens after you get accepted off a waitlist? How much time do you have to pick between the school you are currently accepted at and the school that just accepted you off of the waitlist? I am sure each school is different but do they usually have your fin aid package ready when they accept you? Thanks for your help.
 
After May 15th you can only be holding one acceptance at a time, so most schools give you about 24 hours to make a decision the either decline or let the other school know you aren't coming. That's why they tell you to fill out all your financial aid stuff early, even if you are still waiting to hear if you got on the waitlist, because they can't offer you a package until that is done.

Call in hours start Wednesday June 3 from 1:30-3:30 and Thursday from 10-12.
 
KaiHa, thanks for the update. I'm puzzled as to why they do this "tier" list though when the school has obviously been taking applicants off of its waitlist for the past two weeks now. Hopefully though, regardless of the circumstances, we'll be next in line. Although, I really hope you get it though!

I just spoke to Veronica in the admissions office and she said the same thing. Call in hours are Wed, 1:30-3:30 and Thu, 10-12.

I got through when I called shortly after 10:30 and was on hold for about 20 minutes. Richard Silverman said that in "the worst year in YSM history" only 17 got in off the waitlist and in "the best year" a total of 49 got in off the waitlist. It all depends on the kids ahead of us.

Tier 1 = very likely you will get in.
Tier 2 = several should get in, not necessarily all.
Tier 3 = you need more than a normal amount of movement off the waitlist to get in.
