2009 DO Match Lists

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lars Gardner will become an SDN pre-osteo legend now. MD neurosurgery. Hold on while I have 10 orgasms.

Actually, great work by him. I'm more making fun of the people on here.

Dude, its a DO program. Thats a mistake.

I know I bring this up on every match list, and it's probably annoying by now ... but how are people listing that they matched AOA derm??? Isn't the program at NSU non-linked?? Meaning that even if someone was completing an internship there, they would still have to apply for PGY2 derm like everyone else???

I have no idea how derm works because derm is for pussys. All I know is there are 2 from my class that matched into derm.

Is the plural of 'p*ssy' p*ssys or p*ssies??? I'll have to ask my dermatologist.

you match your prelim year/internship and your advanced pgy-2 derm spot at the same time. just like anesthesia, neurology, radiology, etc.

Not quite. There are 4 AOA Derm residencies in Florida. Three of them you cannot match into. You must do a transitional year, just like most AOA Derm residencies. Columbia Hospital in West Palm, however, is linked to their Internal Medicine program.

I think that since this year allo Neurosurgery went from the san fran match to the regular match the timing screwed up any DOs matching into allo NS. In years past the timing was that if you didn't match in the SF match into NS you could fall back onto the DO match but now that is no longer possible since if you match into the AOA you get yanked out of the allo match. Meaning, for a DO to match into allo NS now they would have to pretty much forgo the DO match all together and take their chances.

We desperately need a joint match

Anyway, congrats to all my fellow matchers this year.

Yeah ... but I thought the linked was 2 years IM --> derm.

Yeah ... but I thought the linked was 2 years IM --> derm.

No. Here's a quote from the derm residency in St. Pete:

Before you begin your Dermatology residency, you need to complete one year of clinically based training. The AOA mandates a one year, non-linked, traditional rotating internship program, during which you will need to make a separate application to the dermatology residency program.

No. Here's a quote from the derm residency in St. Pete:

Isn't there one derm in FL where it's a couple of year of IM -> derm?? I thought that's where TripleJ trained???

Like I mentioned, there is Columbia Hospital. It is really a fellowship linked to the IM program. It only pays about 25 grand a year, so be prepared to do some moonlighting.

gotcha.

Western-COMP's match list is sexy. I like it.

Damn, my name is on there for all to see. Oh well.

Before long your name and likely picture will be on a residency website. Soooo it's not exactly a private thing. It's not like they posted your SSN or Board Scores.... that said, I'm a 2012er at CCOM--congrats on the great match list--very impressive!

The inaugural GA-PCOM match list is up on the class thread. Out of 70-80 people, 3 into rads, 4 into anesthesiology, 9 into EM, and a bunch of transitional years going who-knows-where after that... one is an ocular research position, which I can only assumes means ophtho is up next.

Not a lot of surgeons. Only 1 GS (but Hawaii!), a couple OB-GYNs, and no other surgical specialties (yet... we'll see what the internship/transitional folks do... I really don't know anything about these guys or what their plans are).

Lots of military folks too.

Some pretty big name programs for IM are thrown in. I see a Georgetown and a Temple. Big med schools, but I don't know anything about their specific programs.

One guy going to Scott and White for path. I guess Dr. Zaman made an impression on him. Scott and White is a fantastic hospital, albeit in a very lame town. But close to austin.

The two Darnall EM military matchers will be spending some time at the ED where I used to work, for some trauma stuff. They also go to Detroit Receiving for some stuff, or so I'm told. We had some outstanding military residents come through that program, and I think it is generally considered to be pretty highly-regarded.

Anyway, go check it out on the class of 2013 thread.

Okay here it is... someone posted on the class of 2013 topic:

Thanks. I would really appreciate that as I'm seriously considering LECOM-B. There COMLEX stats are phenomenol.

FWIW, I love it here. Our match last year was great, and only looks to improve from here, since each class has crushed the previous class on boards...although board scores aren't everything, they are alot...

Do you have last year's match list, please? Even from previous years if you have those available.

Funny, i was about to commment on the PC heaviness and lack of surgical matches. Just goes to show you how pointless and subjective looking at match lists can be. Everyone's interpretation is different. Its kind of strange how much emphasis people put on a match list. Either way im glad that schools like WVSOM exist. Serious lack of PCP's in appalachia.

Don't be surprised by this, I've been seen a good number of people from my school getting away from g-surg by choice after doing rotations.

So what does it mean not many people in a class match g-surg? probably not much.

When is KCUMB's list coming out.

Is PCOM as good as SDN makes it seem? I don't think that match looks too great. I'm basically ******ed, though. So what do I know.

I'm not trying to flame, btw.

Match lists really don't show much in either direction....the true measure of a successful match is if the students got what they wanted.....and that info isn't exactly readily available

It's very hard to make that comment about PCOMs match list with the only one piece of information being # of students in X specialty. You don't know if they are AOA/ACGME or which hospitals. For all you know all of the IMs are at Penn
I think the amount of surgery is impressive
... 9 ortho and 18 g surg not to mention 2 neurosurg! Less matches in the so called "ROAD" specialties though. 2 rads out of ~250? Again, they could be at Penn :D
A little concerning is that 1/4 of the class does not have an advanced position and are doing an internship year... .unless I'm mistaken and internships are just being reported separately?

The only way to tell if a matchlist was "great" would be to get each student who matched into X say if they matched into what they wanted and then if they matched where they wanted.

For example:

An "ok" list

Student V - Wanted Rads - Matched GS - Matched #3
Student X - Wanted Rads - Matched IM - Matched #9
Student Y - Wanted Rads - Matched Rads - Matched #1 (not dream program - didn't use match wisely)
Student Z - Wanted Rads - Matched Rads - Matched #12

Students V and X could have decided that their boards weren't good enough, didn't do well during rotations, sucked it up an interviews, ect. Student Z could have listed all "reach/dream" programs 1-11, and been quite happy with #12, while Student Y listed all his "safe" programs first because he wanted to match in his top 3 choices b/c that looks better (even though he would have been happier at other programs.

A "pretty good" list

Student V - Wanted Rads - Matched Rads - Matched #3
Student X - Wanted Rads - Matched Rads - Matched #5
Student Y - Wanted Rads - Matched Rads - Matched #3
Student Z - Wanted Rads - Matched Rads - Matched #1

A "great" list

Student V - Wanted FM- Matched FM- Matched #1
Student X - Wanted FM- Matched FM- Matched #1
Student Y - Wanted FM- Matched FM- Matched #1
Student Z - Wanted FM- Matched FM- Matched #1

According to SDN, people would consider the match lists like: 2 > 1 > 3, when in all reality, the go 3 > 2 > 1.

Thus, without knowing each students intentions, if they used the match list correctly, if they really wanted field X, there is nothing really of value on match lists.

Maybe one class really wanted 90% to do FM, all matched top 3 choices at hospitals they wanted to go to . Just because they didn't have specialties or big name hospitals, does that make the match list bad?? NO! (For example: CCOM only has 2 ortho, while most other DO schools have 5+..does this mean CCOM sucks? no, maybe only 2 people wanted ortho).

So, in summary: match lists don't really mean anything without more detailed information.

Also keep in mind PA is one of the "5 states" and maybe some students are still a little undecided and are just getting the intern year requirement out of the way in prep for doing an ACGME residency?

Also keep in mind that a number of programs start at PGY-2, and ask that you do your first year elsewhere.

There are a significant amt of us (including myself) whose specialties require a separate intern year regardless of MD/DO/5 states (ie PM&R, Anesthesia, Optho, Rads, etc).
