* * 2010 - 2011 * * Secondary Applications Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After speaking with Robin Johnson, one of the admission counselors, who was extremely nice I might add, we will have to submit two applications. One to each campus. The secondary invites we received were JUST to the Pomona campus program. So just fill it out and everything will be good to go for that one. The secondaries for the Lebanon Program will be coming out "probably sometime next week" per Robin. So just wait on that one. She also stated that they were going to be mostly similar, except for a few questions (essay #4 comes to mind). So CA is good to go, and we are waiting on the OR secondary invites.

that definitely clears things up. thx! and yes Ms. Johnson has been awesome

@ noshie: they probably went on SDN and realized they better send yours out ASAP haha

Hahaha, I was actually thinking this also.... I don’t really hide my name very well, and I am not one to be very anonymous! Oh well, at least they got the hint!

I'm super anonymous 😉 Sooooo tough to figure out who i'll be at LECOM's interview 🙄 lol

In other news there is a chance I'll be flying to Florida directly from Cancun, getting in on Wednesday so I'll be around all day Thursday to explore and grab dinner or something if other people interviewing on the 27th want to lol If nothing else at least I'll be tan!

Yeah, I bet you look nothing like I think you look like! We should be FB friends! Haha. That way I don’t ask random people if their name is DbDan at the interview...

You're going to Cancun! Lucky! I bet you will be too nervous to enjoy it! Lol. Yes, we should grab dinner at least, I am coming in sometime around 5 or 6pm on Thursday, probably earlier because I have to wait for the person I am rooming with to fly in also before going to the hotel. But we will be driving down from Tampa! Eeek!

In other news! My letters were sent, and wow, VeCollect is super speed fast! My advisor clicked send and sent me an email, and seconds later I got an email from UNECOM saying that they got my letters and I am complete... Dang. I guess that means they all got them today! Yayayay!

I have a question about KCOM evaluation forms. Do we really have to use the evaluation forms because I think Section I/II are required. And it states clearly that the evaluation forms must accompany the letters. I posted this question on KCOM 2010-2010 forum and someone told me it's ok not to turn in the evaluation forms, is that true? Please help, thank you!

My application shows everything received and I just sent them via interfolio. I think it'll be fine w/o them. If you're really concerned PM Jagger

I think that all of the schools that have these forms don't really require them, it's just a suggestion of sorts. They cant make you get your letter writer to fill these out, and most people are doing committee packets, so there's no reason for these forms... But if you are worried, just call and ask. 😛

I think the only school I know of that really requires it is MSU, which is the reason I didn't apply there.

Is anyone complete at Nova? They said they haven't gotten my letters but all the other schools have, I'm hoping that they're just slow with the process.

I'm complete there. Called them yesterday just to make sure. They got everything pretty quickly. They also send you emails when they receive your letters and signature page

So, I just got the PCSOM secondary in my email box! But it’s not working!!! Eeeek! Wish these schools would work out the kinks before sending them out... I mean, just clicking on the link to see what happens would have told them it was not working!

Anyone else get the email and is having this problem with it?

Yup! I just called Angel (the lady that sent the email) and she directed me to Corrine (the IT lady that does the application software), but shes not in her office so I left a message. I'll let you know what happens when she calls me back! Which I hope is soon!

Thanks for calling! It was a nice suprise to see this one since I haven't had any secondaries come in all week-and I thought this one would come a lot later. Happy Friday sdnoholics!

^^ I know, I have been waiting for a secondary to come in for a LONG time. I'm almost jonesing for it.

My advisor just sent me a really nice email... I swear, even though I complain about her sometimes, she's really a great advisor, better than I could ask for. 🙂 What should I get her for doing my committee letter? Thank you note and ???

o maaaan. the payment error thing messed my NSU secondary up. it looks like its gonna take 5-7 days to be officially complete

I have a feeling that Rocky Vista is going to start giving out interviews soon... They just directly emailed me for my two physician LOR writers emails to complete my file... Anyone else get an email for this? Kind of weird that they ask for it, I wonder if they are going to actually email my letter writers... I mean, they can if they want, but it's just weird.

Interesting. Good luck. Last year it looks like they started handing out interviews the first week of August.

I noticed you didn't apply there! Haha, risky huh? I actually have a good friend that just got a professor position for the med school over there, she just got her PhD. I think maybe she put in a good word for me. 🙂 That would be awesome, I have always wanted to live in Colorado.

Hey, I finally got a hold of Corrine from PCSOM about the secondary. She told me that the link is not working (haha duh) and they are fixing it now. They will send out another email when it starts working again to tell us how we can access it. It should be done by the end of the day...

After reading that cluster fck of a thread on here last year about the for profit status among other things I decided against applying there. As cool a place as colorado is to live, I'd rather not deal with the headaches. I'll go somewhere with less controversy. At least hopefully

Hi everyone,

This may have been posted already somewhere in this huge thread but I'm too lazy to look at all pages 😉.

But can someone tell me if they got any replies from KCUMB?? I'm still waiting to see what they've decided.

Thanks

I made the same decision. Debating about PCSOM too. The avg. MCAT I can find is 21.3 to 22. Can anyone find anything a little more promising?

Update: I DID submit a secondary here. I was hesitant from lack of information about this school. I am an over-researcher, so I like to find out as much as possible and maybe its due to the rural-ness or small size, but there isn't a lot of info on SDN or the interweb about the program and its statistics. I won't reiterate the numbers I've pulled from other threads bc I don't want to pass along misinformation, but PM me if you want to know what I've gathered (from students, etc). I am definitely interested in this school as I'm enjoying rural medicine more and more (by shadowing), I would just LOVE to see some hard numbers (my scientist is showing!).

No one has heard from them yet from what I know... Soon I hope!

PeachyPhD: just curious as to why the low MCAT would put you off? as long as people are passing the boards and matching who cares what the MCAT average is?

Sorry, my message was unclear--its just one of THOSE days.

I have found very little information about PCSOM. The school is kind of enigmatic. There is less chatter on SDN about it, the most recent match lists are absent, and I read somewhere that they have rotation sites (or internship?) in Alaska, etc. There just seems to be less talk about this school on both SDN and FB.

I wasn't trying to come off as snobby or anything, I was more looking for someone to correct that statistic, it just seemed much lower than the other DO schools. I can't find anything published or anecdotal that really suggests otherwise. Current students?!? Speak up!!!

I agree, its not all about MCAT. Its also not just about passing the boards, but by how much you pass! Its this kind of info that I'm curious about.

What did you put in the box for "Statement of Purpose" ?

I am really confused.

I just listed qualities (in essay/paragraph form) that would make a good physician and things like that. Hopefully that's what they were looking for. It is kind of confusing.

This is what I did. Submitted.

"Dear Med School god(s),
Are you there? It's me, Peachy. Please send more secondaries my way. You should send some to my SDN buddies, too.

Sincerely,
PeachyPhd."

I think I'll just answer "Why DO?" in about 500 words.

Do you think that is fine?

for PCSOM, under activities section that asks employment/travel during undergrad and afterwards, did u guys list every one of ur activites/jobs including extracurriculars?

and vacations to other countries??

I listed all of my jobs and activities while in undergrad. I have never been out of the country, so hopefully someone else can comment on that.

I wrote mine as why DO also... I figured thats what they wanted since usually thats the question most DO schools ask. But they were so vague and I looked everywhere for instructions on what they wanted but found none, so anything should be fine!

Were there other questions or did they just ask for a "statement of purpose"? Generally I take statement of purpose to be a why do you want to pursue this program in particular. I may have written it as why PCSOM and why DO combined into one essay. Thats just me though. The only statement of purposes I had were for the SMP programs I applied to so I had to write about why the SMP will help remedy the fact I have a ****ty GPA

One last secondary and then mine will be all in. :scared: Here's to hoping for a few interviews. :xf:

I wish that was the case for me. I'm still waiting on 12 secondaries and have 2 pending that I need to finish. I wrote the personal statement for one yesterday so I've just gotta revise and mail. The other I have to write about a situation that I was stressed and how i handled it... wtf is that!? Nothing even remotely comes to mind currently unless I want to talk about being a re-app and being on a waitlist right now but the school has no idea I'm a re-app because I didn't apply there last year so I'm not going to willingly give up that information.

This is one I would LOVE to write on. There are TONS of things that stress me out (and you out I'm sure). It seems like 'they' want to see how you problem solve and approach stressful situations. How about a roommate/lab partner/professor that gave you trouble? How about a job situation that was less than fantastic? Or a particular course that you struggled with and how you overcame it? Just some ideas. Good luck!

As for me, I am still waiting on several allopathic and just a few more osteopathic secondaries. I guess I don't mind waiting too much since it gives my bank account some time to recover. 🙄

Hi. I'm wondering if I just screwed myself a bit. So, I have an extremely busy schedule right now up until the end of the first week of August (working maybe 80 hr weeks). I am getting a few secondaries now, but don't have time to write and review essays so I am putting them off until the second week in August. If I don't submit a secondary within the first two weeks of it being emailed to me, am I screwed? Will schools think I don't want to go there? Or am I just being paranoid.

I hope/think your being paranoid but that's just my opinion. I don't think it matters or that they pay attention. I'm in the same boat. I just took my MCAT yesterday, and put off any secondaries to study so now I have a month to fill them out before my scores come back. I wouldn't sweat it.

I was worried about the same problem since my mcat is Jul 30, so I did some research on it a while ago. There are certain schools that have a 30 day due date when they send a secondary out (not any DO schools as far as I know though), but besides that your application is not complete till you send in your secondary so they won't even look at it for consideration. Now granted the sooner you send it in the better due to the rolling system, but don't worry about them thinking that you don't care enough to fill then out immediately, they have so many applications to deal with on a daily basis that the last thing they think about is why you took a little longer to send it in! that's my two cents!

cheers

Hrm, I've been lucky with roommates/professors, might be able to figure out a lab story or two. I'm not sure the inconsistency of my job is something I really want to dwell on though which is the most stressful. Thanks for the ideas! I have one lab story/lab project from class Sr. year that was super stressful because of the magnitude of it. I guess I'll write on that. I'm also a control freak though and I don't want that to come out in the essay

I just put the finishing touches on a couple of secondaries, only one I've got remaining is the UIC one that asks about stress to write tonight. Mail out one on Monday. Other than that I'm still waiting on the remainder of my secondaries. If I got no more (not likely) I've got 330 dollars worth the secondaries left. If I somehow managed to get one from every school (ridiculously unlikely I'll get one from the UCs) I've got $715 left. Plus interview costs of course.

On a side note, I'm much less stressed on my costs of flying to Bradenton for the interview now! I only have to pay for the flight home since my mom is paying for me to fly to Cancun and straight from Cancun to Orlando! =) Then I'll fly out of Tampa or Sarasota on Friday night

question about the atsu-kcom application...

Under the clinical health experiences section you can only list 4 activities, is there a way to add more???

No, make sure to combine things like shadowing and pick the top 4 in your opinion. You'll have the opportunity to talk about more if they interview you. They'll also see your primary.

thx i was just wondering. they had another question about activities so i didnt know if they were specifically looking for employment for this section. i think im letting myself get caught up in all these little things that arent really a big deal

and still no love from NYCOM 🙁
