**2010-2011** "What are my Chances? Where Should I apply? What should I do?"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If I had to wager you'll probably get acceptances from 1/3-1/2 your listed schools. I think your median MCAT looks better than a random "26" because of the balance. Though there is nothing wrong with your MCAT, your GPA is a bit low, if you wanted to try and retake your MCAT you could probably be more selective of your schools. Either way you should be looking at a few acceptances

I respectfully disagree. To say anyone is going to get 7-10 acceptances is saying alot. To say someone with a 3.0 and a 26 is going to get them even with vast clinical experience is absurd to me.

I'd venture to say he's got a good chance of multiple interviews and a chance for acceptance at many places but there is no guarantee with stats like that.

You also have to take into account more competitive schools, region and state preference. For example, we have no idea where he is from but I'd venture to say its not likely he is from NJ, Michigan, Ohio and a Rural Area all at once so thats going to limit UMDNJ, OUCOM, MSU and VCOM. Stats are also low for Western.

I'm not trying to be an ass but you should probably rethink the admission standards you expect for med schools. Will he get an acceptance? ya he's got a shot. he's got good clinical/emergency experience, research, shadowing, LORs, etc. but his stats say he's below average GPA and does not have an amazing MCAT to warrant the "you'll get accepted to 1/2 your list".

Hey guys,

Im a fairly newish member (100 posts) and thought I would try the what are my chances thread since I always hesitate posting here for some weird reason lol

sGPA = 3.2
cGPA = 3.1
MCAT = 30R (12PS, 8V, 10B)

DO reference (only one day shadowing, but said he "enjoyed me" and wanted to give me a ref)
1 MD LOR
2 Science profs (one Comp Sci, one Biology)

EC:
-Childrens Hospital (250-300 hours, playing w/ children and shadowing)
-Normal Hospital ( 60 hours)
-St John Ambulance (First aid) (300 hours)
-Ski Patrol (2 winter seasons)
- 1 year in Diabetes lab (250 hours i believe)
-1 year in Anesthetic lab
- Sex education (150 hours)
- 1 month in Ecuador shadowing ER doctors and rebuilding an orphanage
-etc

I was hoping my EC and MCAT would make up for my low GPA. What are your opinions? I really value ur honest opinion, lets not kid around im not gonna be getting 10 acceptances.

BIGGEST DISADVANTAGE: Im Canadian

Thanks guys! GL

It looks like you have decent ECs and MCAT. I mean no offense by this, but does computer science count as a science LOR?

Hey taylormade2006,

no offense taken, to be honest I was wondering the same thing. At my school its science, so im not really too sure (this is a Canadian school, things could be diff in US). I know that Comp Sci counts at math for you guys...and i was hoping math counted as science

The guy/gal has a ~3.2 cGPA not a 3.0, I am simply speaking from trends I have seen on SDN over the past three years. If he/she applies early (like now) I think he has a good chance of getting into at least 1/3 of his schools. I'm not seeing you as an @$$ and without MSAR like stats available we are all playing a guessing game. In my opinion I see 8 schools on his list he/she I think has a good chance of being accepted to, also I see about 6 schools that will probably toss his/her app.

* GPA (overall): 3.5
* GPA (BCPM): 3.3
* MCAT: 35P (Physical 11, Verbal 12, Biology 12)
* Clinical Volunteering: yes, but comparatively small amount
* Shadowed MD: yes, and received LOR
* Shadowed DO: yes, and received LOR
* Received LORs from 2 science teachers, 1 english teacher, and a committee letter from school
* Research: 3 semesters as an undergraduate, currently working 1 year as a full-time researcher at the Vanderbilt Dept. of Biological Sciences; received LOR from my PI
* Other activities include piano for 17 years, tennis for 9 years (only played recreational in college, however), working in an environmental testing laboratory for 1 year

Can anyone recommend 2-3 osteopathic schools that fit the following criteria:

* Successfully matches students into MD residencies at a high rate, or is at least viewed as one of the top 10-15% osteopathic schools in terms of prestige. I don't want to be interviewing for MD residencies and find out that none of the interviewers have ever heard of the osteopathic school which has been educating me. I was told, by a DO who landed an MD residency after placing in the 99th percentile on both the COMLEX and USMLE, that this often happens with the "newer, possibly low quality" DO schools which don't have a great track record (yet?) of getting their students into the best residencies. This is why I do not want all the brand-new and/or not prestigious DO schools even to be up for discussion
* Might be considered a "safety" school for me (disregarding the fact that no DO/MD school is ever a sure bet and that I need a lot of help with my interviewing skills) in terms of landing an interview
* Is a private institution--I'm tired of applying to schools which have a strong preference for in-state students, or students who are willing to sign a commitment to practicing rural medicine for 8 years, or whatever.

I would love to find an osteopathic school which meets all 3 of these criteria.

Yes, I can look up certain statistics about various osteopathic medical schools myself, and I realize that all the links I need are in that one moderator's sig (his name escapes me right now), but to really do a good job with looking through match statistics, etc. would take hours and there are people on this forum who can glance at my info and what I'm looking for and rattle off 2-3 private and prestigious osteopathic schools that I also have a good chance of interviewing at in about 5 seconds.

Thanks in advance for any advice/osteopathic school recommendations : ) I'm really grateful to anyone who takes the time to read all this and help me out.

P.S. I'm new to the world of DO schools, so if you use an acronym to refer to a school, please spell the whole name out once so that I can start learning the acronyms...

Philadelphia College of Medicine. (PCOM)

it seems like its average MCAT is lower than other DO schools...wouldn't the most prestigious school get its pick of the best applicants?
http://www.atsu.edu/faculty/chamberlain/ranmcat.htm
PCOM-georgia didnt report scores but PCOM did, and they seem low?
explain?
I'm willing to listen about PCOM though because you're not the first person who has said it is the most prestigious. I'm just wondering why it doesn't seem to attract the best students.

don't be a prick

Are you serious?

No need for abrasiveness. I literally do not know anything about DO schools at this point and am looking for someone to actually give me reasons and back up what they say instead of name-calling. People can claim whatever they want on the internet; I just want someone to back up what they say so that I can actually make a decision here. It's not really helpful just to throw out the name of a school without any further information. I can look those up for myself.

Go away.

I don't think he's being a prick I think he's sorely misinformed and has done absolutely no research on his own.

PCOM, CCOM, KCOM seem to be some of the consensus "best" schools. There is a thread debating the top schools, search for it

Thanks. I already found that thread but, again, there wasn't a lot of reasoning.

KCOM=Kansas or Kirksville?
CCOM=?

And as I wrote in my first post, it would take me hours to research all of this, especially the match data. I know there are people on these forums who could advise me in about 5 seconds instead, but apparently I will just need to ignore all the unhelpful ones.

pyrocat,

unfortunately or fortunately there are a lot of pricks as well as useful information on sdn. getting most of the information on Do schools/match lists/ pros cons/ rumors is done by yourself and it is up to you to find the information. while one or two simple questions might be easily answered by a frequent poster on sdn, it seems like you have a lot of unanswered questions...

i would advise taking a look at the faqs on the top of the pre do section, or the VERY helpful chocolate bear's posts and look at the links in his signature. sorry if this comes off as harsh, but im just letting u know the facts in a pleasant manner. most of those "people" that could let you know in 5 seconds are probably med students who have done the research, gotten into schools and probably don't check the what are my chances thread anymore..

best of luck in ur application cycle!

Okay, well, thanks anyways hopeinternist : )
Could you at least maybe tell me which school is CCOM and which is KCOM?

Consider: PCOM, KCOM, NYIT/NYCOM, KCUMB, CCOM, TCOM, DMUCOM. They are the spot on better known DO schools. From these I'd be considering which one is better suited to your area or family. If you decide to apply to PCOM remember that it's more of a wild thing there ( it's arguable the best osteo school).

Michigan State is pretty well regarded, too, but has insane OOS tuition, which violates one of your requirements of a private school.

* Research:1 semester as an undergraduate
EC- Greek Life, but after that nothing constant, I volunteered here and there such as Haiti relief, local community events, etc but never really stayed in one place to be substantial enough to list

I know my stats are somewhat competitive but my lack of DO letter (although I checked which schools required one) and limited ECs worry me. I'm on my glide year and plan on taking one graduate neuroscience class, and EMT-B certification class, and I'm trying to find work in a laboratory.

I applied last year but did not complete secondaries because I did not have ANY physician LOR. I did complete NYCOM but never heard back from them.

What do you guys think? I'm also applying to some MDs but know my chances are limited but at this point I do believe DO would be a better fit for me.

I should be able to submit my AACOMAS tomorrow and have my transcriptsand LORs in by the end of next week.

I know I posted this before, but I took some practice exams lately, so I thought I'd add the scores in to get some more feedback. I know it's hard to judge without all the numbers, and even without all the REAL numbers, but here it goes...

Hey everyone,

Double major biological sciences & history
3.54 cGPA
3.20 sGPA due to illness, retaking organic chem 1 & 2 which I think will raise it to 3.35ish

MCAT in July.
Practice #1: 10PS, 11VR, 10BS - 31
Practice #2: 11PS, 12VR, 11BS - 34
(I hope I can do as well or better on the real one!)

Some non-med extra circulars like intramural sports etc., also about 300 hours of volunteering, 50 hours shadowing DO

Currently a full-time research tech at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston for the year (or longer if I don't get into school) in Renal division.

Sent in primary app for DMU, PCOM, PCOM-GA, NYCOM, LECOM-E, UNECOM, VCOM, and Nova.

What do you think?

28+ on the real mcat and you'll be fine. Why DMU? Your list's pretty East coast heavy. If your not partial to location then I'd also add KCOM, KCUMB, CCOM. Otherwise if your East coast favoring then consider Touro-NY.

Damn. I never even thought of putting things like intramural sports as an EC. I am just wondering if others do this as well? Should I?

Yea, I'd prefer a school on the East Coast because that's where I grew up. I included DMU because I've heard a lot of positive things about the school. I have considered KCUMB/KCOM as options, but I really would like an East Coast school.

I added intramural sports as one thing and then listed the various sports in the description section.. I don't think its much of a make or break extracurricular to have

So I really don't know what to do here. I worked really hard this year got all A's and brought my GPA up from 3.0 to 3.45 but when I filled out my AACOMAS I had to include the transcripts from my Community College days which dropped me from 3.45c to 3.35c. My science GPA stayed at 3.36. I'm planning on taking the MCAT in July or August at the latest but I'm worried about it getting too far into this application season. My EC's are pretty good, volunteering, shadowing, club president, work as a medical scribe. Great LOR's 1 MD, 2 DO, 1 pre-professional committee letter.

I've got a pretty good plan if I don't get in this year, bring my GPA up some more my senior year, PCOM's Biomed certificate program as well

Applying to PCOM, LECOM, UNECOM a few others

Should I wait?

I would suggest waiting because of the time you'll take your MCAT. You are unsure of July or August, waiting until August will yield a score in September, and then wait for verification from AACOMAS and then the schools themselves. You can do it for sure, but every school and SDNer says apply early! I think the general consensus is apply by end of July, no later. Other than that, your GPA and ECs are good

I'd wait to apply til next year simply because I don't want any more competition for a spot this year....😀

J/K, I'd go for it!! take the MCAT by the end of July hopefully if you're ready and roll the dice!!!

apply, submit now and indicate that you are taking MCAT in July, that way, you can get verified and not have to wait for that later on, so schools can see the mcat score, the same day you get it.

you might even get a couple of secondaries, in the meantime. (unless schools wait for mcat scores to issue those, i'm not sure)

I suggest doing both from reading the previous replies. This way you cover your bases... otherwise all you base are belong to us.

I'm also new to the D.O. scene and am curious about my stats.
cGPA 3.2
sGPA 3.7
MCAT 28Q

Solid EC's with around 800 hours of clinical service and shadowing. The only thing I haven't done is shadow a D.O., but I'm working on that. Honest opinions please! And I've had trouble finding the stats on schools and where my numbers might be competitive at. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello everybody, I'd appreciate some wise "chances"-related opinions.

Just submitted primary app today, schools: DMU, NYCOM, CCOM, UNECOM, Touro-CA, Western, and UMDNJ.

I am a CA resident, attended a UC. ~3.5 cGPA and ~3.4 sGPA with upward trend. 34L MCAT: 10P, 11V, 13B.

Good clinical and work experience, not so much research.

LORs: 2 science proff, 2 physician (MD), 1 work supervisor, No DO

Which of the 7 schools do I have a better chance at? Which do I have less chance at?

Thanks
:xf:

34 MCAT? I would've waited and retaken the MCAT, aim for a 38+ if you really want to be competitive.

🙄

NYCOM & New Jersey accept less OOS student's then most. However with your stats you'll be fine.
I'd apply to more then 1 of those schools if your actually going to spend your time filling out the whole aacomas application.

That was helpful......

To answer the OPs question, your GPA is on par with DO averages and your MCAT is substantially higher so you've got a good chance at any of them. NYCOM tends to be selective for in state so you may have less of a chance there, UNECOM is region based same with UMDNJ. You have a very good shot at the remainder as I don't believe they have a strong regional bias.

That said, you are a very strong applicant so assuming you don't botch anything I'd say you've got a great shot to get interviews and acceptances at the majority of your schools unless there is something wrong with your app.

Are you also applying MD? I'd say with your stats if you've got good clinical background you'd have a shot at UCD and UCI at least staying in state and a good shot at getting in somewhere OOS if you apply broadly.

Thanks for the responses guys, very helpful. I am more optimistic about getting in somewhere now.

DbDan, I am applying MD too, but my GPA may be too low for most of those schools. Either way, it would be hard to turn down a school like DMU or CCOM imho.

Yes your GPA is low but people have gotten in with worse and your MCAT is good enough to buy you some forgiveness. I'd definitely look into schools like St. Louis, Tulane, Tufts, U Illinois, RFU, EVMS, Drexel, etc.

Also, do you have a non-science/humanities letter? You are going to need one for some schools

Do any MD/DO applicants have a problem with applying to DO schools too early? Like they get accepted to a DO school before getting a chance to hear from the a MD wait list? Also, I just have to ask... Which schools have the hottest babe population?

I'm not even sure if this is serious but yes, I've heard of many people getting into and having to put down a deposit for DO schools before hearing from an MD waitlist. Matriculating shouldn't be a problem though since they all start right around the same time.

Babe population? lol I'll bite. I'm sure Nova has some good looking girls being in South Florida and having an UG campus right next to it. There were also some pretty people on campus during my LECOM interview. Plus I can't imagine Western being too bad either being in Southern California :laugh:

I have a friend who has now lost... well a large sum of money because of deposits and stands to lose another sizable chunk if he gets off a waitlist.

He put down an initial deposit at one school, waitlisted at Western and 2 MD schools. Put down his second deposit at the original school. Got into Western off waitlist and put down the deposit there and lost the ~3k from the first school. How if he gets the call from one of the 2 MD schools :scared: Stands to lose 3k more.

Hello all, I'm just curious what my chances are given my stats.
cGPA=3.61
sGPA=3.58
MCAT=25O (9p,6v,10b)
~250 hours of shadowing (200 of which were a pulmonologist/criticalist in both hospital and clinical settings)

I work full time as a House Orderly, transporting patients all day and occasionally performing CPR.

I worked 40-60hrs a week during my last 2 years of college, shuffling 3 part time jobs (biology tutor, lab assistant, and retail sales)

ECs include president of my school's Biology Club for 2 years, VP of an honor society for 1, active member of a service organization for 2 years

Here's a list of schools I plan on applying to:

ATSU-KCOM
ATSU-SOMA
Des Moines University
Virginia COM
KCUMB
AZCOM
Nova Southeastern University
Ohio University
Oklahoma State University
Pikeville College
Touro University-CA
W VA SOM
William Carey
LECOM-Bradenton
Lincoln Memorial
Touro University-NV

I guess my main questions are: Am I applying broadly enough? Are there any of these schools I don't have a chance at (I'm from MO)? I'm hoping th have my personal statement completed within the next couple days, so I'll be ready to turn in my application after that. I just don't want to apply anywhere I'll get filtered out for a 6 in Verbal or anywhere I don't have a chance of getting in. Thank you very much in advance

Save your money and don't bother applying to Nova and OSU, they both have a "no less than a 7 in any section on the MCAT" policy. Other than that you should be able to get a few acceptances if you apply early, and I think you are applying broad enough

NOVA says that if you have a high enough composite MCAT score with a section below a 7, they will let it slide.

I have a couple questions about getting LOR's from DOs. I know that many schools require one, but I'm just curious as to if this has a huge impact on admission or if they just want to see that you've taken an interest in osteopathy by getting to know a DO? ALSO when do you submit the LOR from a DO?? Does it need to go in with the primary or the secondary app??? Thank you to anyone who can answer my question!

Western told my friend her DO letter was too generic and she was on the waitlist. I'm not sure if a DO letter plays a HUGE impact on admission but it definitely matters. LORs go with the secondary app.

Could any of you give me a guess on my chances? Thanks.

Where are you applying? If you know your GPA is around average and you know your MCAT is above average, and you have research and volunteer activities...is there something specific about your application you fear is going to get you rejected?
