Correct me if I'm wrong...

Hold status is basically like asking someone to the prom and having them respond, "Maybe, let's see if I can find anyone more attractive first."

There's a lot of attractive people applying to Mayo.

No hold email here as of yet.
Terrible sinking feeling that began at noon just got worse.

Just received my hold email as well. I wonder if there's any hope for us, or if we can find that out or not.

Of course there's hope!! I'm sure they only released a couple acceptances today...they are only like a month through their interview season, so you have many many more chances to be reconsidered. I'm sure they are leaving most of the spots open this early so that they can also consider people from the next couple months of interviews. If I recall correctly, several students have posted on here that a good percentage of the class comes from the hold list🙂

On hold here too. Hopefully there is still a chance!

Good luck everyone!

Snuke, do you or anyone else know whether, like you said, they only give decisions out once every two weeks or if it is anytime after you are ranked. Is that your guess or have you heard anything? I just dont want to freak out if there is no reason to yet

...and hold.

Considering 12pm CST came and went hours ago, I'm pretty pleased to get a hold instead of a rejection. My odds at Mayo might have taken a hit, (20% to 10%, overall?) but I can live with that for now.

Definitely don't freak out yet. They run on a cycle so that they can keep ranking new people to include them in the decisions. It's about once every two weeks, but I'm probably going to call tomorrow to confirm that.

Ok cool. Let me know when you find out

And hold as well. I'm very relieved, but it's going to be hard to put Mayo at the back of my mind for the next two weeks.

Does the hold status mean that we could potentially get acceptances after each meeting or does it mean that we won't hear anything until interviews are over?

Since there seems to be some confusion/lack of knowledge, here is how the hold process works at Mayo:

If you are on the hold list, you are in a pool relatively equal to each other. There is a ranking system, but it's not always followed.

Mayo sends out decisions biweekly (I will confirm this tomorrow), and at every decision meeting, they go over newly ranked applicants in addition to applicants on hold. At every meeting, we will be looked at and considered for any acceptance.

Typically, about half of the class comes off the waitlist. This ends up being ~20 people at different times, though I am not sure if it includes people who are accepted off the hold list and before the end of interviews. I assume it does. This means that, in effect, not many people come off the hold list, but some most assuredly do.

I don't know about the rest of you, but if you were looking for an ETA my hold status e-mail came at 4:43 pm. From talking with the students at Mayo, they seemed to think that about half of their class came off the "hold" list.

A hold means that AT ANY TIME after a new ranking meeting you may be offered an acceptance. If you are on hold, they do not automatically wait until all interviews have concluded (or so I was told by the students). Most of them that I talked to who were initially on hold happened to hear about their acceptance within 1-2 months after being placed on hold. The first cut is the hardest; congratulations to those who have made it.

Also, a bit of optimism for you. The host I stayed with told me that out of his interview of 8, 4 ended up matriculating. Obviously this isn't true for every interview, but since most of you here already interviewed (he interviewed in early September) I wouldn't count on just one acceptance per interview day. All in all, there is hope. Don't let the number game get you down. Besides, Mayol probably can tell if you're a good fit for Mayo better than you can tell if you're a good fit for Mayo. I'm sure that we will all end up at the best school for us to succeed in (well... hopefully... 🙂 ).

Best of luck to everyone! I hope today was positive in terms of hearing from other schools.

Also, I think that they will be reviewing applications again tomorrow (Tuesday). The last e-mail that went out from the review committee (confirming that they had reviewed your/(my) application went out on October 4th at 9:52 am.) I would assume that they probably will review again tomorrow morning; two weeks after the previously met.

Keep us updated!

Got the call this morning from Gina. Totally speechless!

Quick question--are the Dean's Scholarships and other merit scholarship on top of the $15K awarded immediately or is it after they receive our financial info?

That is a great question. I guess we all got the 15K scholarship which is great! I hope it's this on top anything else we get.👍

To the three posters who were accepted. Congrats!! A question for you. Did you feel your interview went very well? How would you rank the way you felt when you came out of the interviews 1-5 (for each one)?

Snooke,
When you verify if there are bi-weekly acceptances, can you also find out what days they are? Thanks!

Haha, yeah. I'm anxious to see how they allocate out those dream scholarships 😀

I thought my interviews were average. With 5 being great and 1 being ****, my first interview was a 2.5, and second interview was a 4. Ironically, I've been waitlisted by the schools where I thought I rocked the interviews and accepted where I thought my interview were mediocre

But to reiterate, if anyone knows how the additional merit scholarships work, holla at us!

...Talk about being socially awkward.

😉 just joking. Congrats! 🙂

Haha I should consider that. Maybe I should stop shaking with my left hand and wearing my lucky purple/orange pokadot tie

hahah nice! I thought my first one was like a 3-4 and second one was 3-4. Hopefully!

The committee meets every Tuesday to rank applicants. Two weeks after that - on no particular day, just whatever day they can meet - the people who make decisions meet to give out acceptances. So there's no particular day (other than the ranking Tuesday) that acceptances will come out. Just every two weeks.

Once you get an email, no one is rejected. I was incorrect before, but this is from Gina. Either you are accepted or put on hold.

Two weeks and counting until the next batch of decisions.

Ugh. This may be a very long cycle.....

So that means everyone who is ranked today + everyone who is ranked next week will be under consideration?

We are taking GI right now (M2's, that is). We are told that men can have 4 beers per day, and women can have 2 beers per day, without any risk of alcoholic liver disease. So have 2 chocolate stouts.

That's the best news I have heard all day 😛

Thanks a lot! I thought my first interview was a 4 (it was my first interview and I was pretty nervous). The faculty member and I shared a lot of common interests, from our research to our passion for international medicine. My second interview was a 5. It was truly enjoyable to meet the second professor, and I feel like if I end up at Mayo I could email him so that we could meet for coffee or something. He even called to congratulate me!

You had two professors? My second one was a 4th year. Man! I woulda liked two physicians. O well.

Does anyone know when we will get a ranked email?

This question has been answered already. 🙂 Chill, man. Try to stop stressing. I know it's difficult, but you won't hear a decision for two weeks. There's nothing you can do about it but save your mental health.

If you were ranked today, you should get an email by Friday. Same as the first time they ranked.

I really like interviewing with students. I think I relate better to them.

I'm interviewing on Friday, anyone else going to be there??

Heh I would gladly switch for that earlier date

After waiting 5-6 weeks after LOR received e-mail, i finally got the word today that I am not selected. This wasn't a huge surprise since I had been waiting so long. I was surprised, however, that I didn't make it to the interview level. Guess my shortage of medical & volunteering experience must have killed me.

40P MCAT
3.97 GPA
Lots of leadership
Truman scholar, other awards, some research, volunteering, and shadowing
unique things: lots of music, study abroad.

I would have loved to go to Mayo. Guess the dream's over. 🙁

Got ranked today. Things are getting more exciting. Hoping for good news soon for all of us!
