I just interviewed this past week and both Dean Weisman and Agnes said the first round of acceptances will be given out on Oct 26th. I believe Agnes also said the committee meets every two weeks to present candidates and hand out acceptances.

Is this Oct 26th date true for people who interviewed in September?

Start the countdown.

If I'm remembering correctly from the interview, it sounded like they would be doing it around the end of the day.

Agnes said if your interviewer gives his/her interview report before this first meeting for the 10/26 acceptances, you will hear on that day. So I'm guessing this is all Sept and the first half of Oct interviewees.

Received an e-mail mid August indicating "application Complete" Is there any way to check status on line? What should be the next status update.does anyone know?

it sounded like they'd actually be meeting ON the 26th, too. i interview in early oct so i hope i get in on this round! does this include md and md-mph decisions?

Any MD/MPH applicants have advise on whether to stay in Miami both nights or stay 1 night in Miami and 1 in West Palm Beach??

Travel planning makes my head hurt

I submitted and was marked complete late July. I called last Thursday to get an update, and she said I am in the time frame where I am waiting to see if I get an interview. The next status would be interview invite, then, I'm guessing, and there is no way to check it. We'll just have to wait for an email. Good luck. :luck:

I did one and one, but the drive is only about an hour, and the second say starts later than the first. If you're a morning person it wouldn't be bad to drive up to palm in the morning. Plus, you can lay out at your hotel pool or South Beach after the UM day 🙂

for those of you that are getting interviews, how long after you received your secondary invite did you actually submit it? especially OOS peeps

thanks

Does anyone know if rejection letters go out right away once they decide or do they wait until fed or the end of the year? Thanks

To people that have already interviewed:

I have an acceptance from UF, and I'm trying to decide whether or not to interview at Miami in November. Can anyone shed some light on the things that make Miami special/better than the state schools in Florida?

Thanks!

UM and UF are two of my absolute top picks out of all of the schools I applied to nation-wide (worth noting, perhaps, that I'm IS here).

The primary difference in my opinion is the practice environment. UF has Shands, which I'm sure you're acquainted with if you've got an acceptance over there. For those not acquainted with it, I would describe it at first approximation as a very impressive, very high-level institution with a large focus on specialized tertiary care, much in the same vein as the "typical" idea of an academic hospital. I really liked everything that I saw about Shands.

Miller (UM) has the Jackson Memorial complex, including UM Hospital and the VA Hospital. This place is also extremely impressive, but for a different set of reasons. Jackson is an enormous public hospital serving a huge portion of the Miami and South Florida areas, and the patient population there is highly unique and diverse. I hear they tend to see lots of highly unusual things brought in from other places around the region and globe.

So, to me, UF and UM are both stellar institutions that sort of sit on the opposite sides of the same coin when it comes to practice environment. UF offers a fantastic "tertiary care" type of hospital that (in my impression) resembles precisely the type of hospitals that have, for over a century, trained many of the best physicians the world has known. UM offers what I would describe as a somewhat more "nitty-gritty" healthcare environment that has it's share of high-level tertiary care (especially at UM Hospital, I think) but that felt to me more like an inner-city hospital trying very hard to serve the full range of healthcare needs of a diverse patient population. Personally, I think that's really cool.

Both schools are really just amazing, and they both offer a plethora of strengths in virtually every area. I would advise you to go ahead and interview at UM and see how you like Jackson. Just my two cents!

I'm OOS so I'm not sure about other Florida schools, but after my interview experience, I would say this school is definitley worth an interview. Very impressive! 👍

do rejections go out on the 26th too or is it just for those that interviewed? Is there anyone on here that applied last year that knows when the soonest they send those out and not just at miami but at other florida schools too? thanks

I am an OOS applicant and haven't received an interview. My secondary application was not complete until October 3rd so it has been three weeks from today. For anyone who has interviewed how long after you were complete did it take to get this request???

Am I prematurely freaking out already? Does anybody have any advice on scores that I will need (GPA, MCAT) to be competitve for an interview?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!😕

they invite about 200 OOSers from 4k applicants, so hang in there. they do look beyond the numbers.

Anyone else just freaking out about Wednesday? I know I'm just gonna be staring at my phone for like 2 hours.

yeah. i interviewed early oct so i dont even know if i'll find out on wed! not to mention that this is my #1 choice

Thanks for the help! I feel like my numbers are competitive. What was the timeline for anyone who has received an interview, and does anyone think I have just applied to late in the cycle?

This is my number 1 choice for medical school, and my application was delayed because of my universities pre-medical committee. They had no letters complete earlier than mid September this year.

Any time line or further advice? I really dont want to be delayed another year.

Me too. I've had butterflies since my interview and waiting until after the 15th (17th) is kind of cruel.

Were you at Oct 3?

Same! :scared:
It was difficult waiting prior to the interview, but after wards it's been way worse! I only interviewed a couple of weeks ago, so I doubt they'll even get to mine Wednesday. It's good to know I'm not the only one freaking out a little!

Haha, I had my interview in mid-Sept so it's been torturous. It doesn't help that this is easily my top choice and I haven't had any other interviews since to keep me optimistic in the long-run if D-Day happens on Wednesday. Needless to say, I will sell my soul to go here.

T-minus twenty-six-ish hours.........

nervous!!!

Good luck all 🙂

what do we think are the chances that interviewees from the first week of october get in on this cycle?

When I interviewed (Late September), they told us October 27th would be the date. So is it 26th or 27th, or maybe both?

Oct 26th and Nov 9th. I know that those that attended early Oct interviews may be pushed out to the 9th if they can't get it finished.

How long has it taken to hear back about an interview after you have submitted your secondary applications?

I am IS have 4.0 (c) and 4.0 (s) my MCAT was decent but not great.

I also have leadership, tons and tons of shadowing, have been volunteering at the hospital for over 3 years now, and have done a ton of community service. Anyone have any input on my chances? Hopefully the MCAT doesn't taint my otherwise perfect application 🙁

OOS and took ~1 month to receive interview invite. When did you submit?

You sound a lot like me last year. Very high GPA, lots of EC's (do you have research though?), and a decent MCAT. I applied extremely late, but thought that wouldn't matter because I had such an 'obviously' terrific application. And subsequently got shut down. Hard.

Now lateness had a lot to do with not succeeding, but I knew I could do better on the MCAT as well. Unless you graduated from some rinky-dink school where they hand out A's for showing up, don't you think you could do better on the MCAT seeing as you have a perfect GPA? (Too late for this cycle, but something to keep in mind if you don't find success this one). Schools will be wondering that as well. I spoke with deans after getting rejections and they certainly pointed that out.

I definitely don't know your circumstances, and you may very well end up with multiple acceptances, but it sounds like we have many similarities. Disregarding your MCAT, are you 100% certain that your application is 'perfect'...? Last year, I entered the cycle acting like a prima donna, and look where it got me...having to re-app (and improved MCAT to upper-tier levels, got more LOR's, new EC's...and significantly reduced the palpable arrogance seeping from my essays...). You may be one of a kind in your own right, but there are *tons* of geniuses and prodigies just as good as you, if not better, that are doing everything in their power to gain admission. Are you?

Good luck!

Good luck!

I submitted my secondary towards the end of September. The undergraduate University I attend is very reputable, highly ranked, large state school and definitely does not hand out A's for showing up and makes you earn every one. I actually got into UM undergrad, but found this university to be a better fit for me for college.

As for my application, I am going off of what the pre-med advisor said at my school. She told me it was one of the best she had seen in the 20
years of working here. (this was in terms of my academics, awards, activities, and medical field experience. She also said my personal statement was unique) I am really hoping this is true though!

My MCAT is still competitive (especially given my grades), but was not near as high as I was scoring on the AAMC practice tests. I know I can do better, but didn't have the option of taking any more after my first one. When I was able to sign up for another exam, there were no testing centers available for the whole state of Florida or the state where I go to school (the only options where like Alaska and places like that lol). In general, standardized tests have never been my strongest point though.

I have gotten interview invites from other schools (including schools which I'm considered OOS) 3 days after submitting my secondary, which is why I started to wonder about Miami. Thank you so much for your input and advice!

I think many people are waiting to hear back from Miami from what I have heard from other applicants, myself included. I was complete in mid-July, so I have been anxiously waiting for a while. I am not saying I think I will definitely get an II, but I think my application is somewhat competitive since I have a few other interview invites. Also, I spoke with some current MS1's who said that a good portion of their class didn't interview until December or later. So, who knows what will happen. Let's not lose hope, though. Good luck :luck:

Ok, that makes me feel a little better! Thank you! It seems that most of the Florida schools take a pretty long time.

Based on last year's thread it seems they will be calling people today after 5pm (EST) with emails to follow tomorrow. (Acceptance/Waitlist)

To those that have heard: on what date did you interview?

seems strange that only 1 SDNer received a call today, no?

People had calls as late as 7pm last year! Those waiting don't lose hope! I have no idea if I will be even looked at today or not... Interviewed mid October...

ACCEPTED!!! MD/MPH!!

This is a dream come true! Got the call about 5:30 eastern. Good luck everyone still waiting 🙂
