2013-2014 Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I hope there's a lot of waitlist movement! I keep seeing people withdrawing acceptances at schools where I'm in limbo, and it gives me hope. Still working on my reapp though!

I'm envious as I haven't seen anyone withdraw from EITHER of my schools!

I got my first acceptance (off a waitlist) today as well! I was losing my mind thinking how I wasn't going to come off even 1 out of 7 waitlists, but it is all over now! I haven't posted much in this thread, but I've read a lot of the posts, so hang in there everyone! I'm rooting for all of you now! Don't lose hope!!!

That's awesome! Congratulations and thanks for the well wishes!

Hey everyone, I really js want say thanks for updating us with your acceptances. I'm currently on 4 wait-lists (no acceptances) and although I know there's a chance I may not get off these wait-lists, I am feeling more hopeful and optimistic because of all these updates!

I was on two waitlists but then I was notified where I was on one of them (and it turned out I was in the bottom half, which was essentially like a rejection based on the typical numbers that come off). So now I'm basically on one waitlist hoping for the best... I wonder if I should reapply this cycle or the next, was leaning to the next cycle to make sure my application is signif. stronger, but anybody have advice? (or direct me to another thread if this topic already exists)

I'm worried I'm in the same boat as you. Just my opinion, unless there's something substantial you've done this year that would add to your next application, you're probably better off waiting. If you apply again, med schools are going to compare your previous app with your most recent app, so you want there to be a significant difference-otherwise, they have no more reason to accept you or offer you an interview this time than they did last time.

Waitlisters facing down a potential re-application cycle, I just want to let y'all know that a second cycle can be very successful. I never thought I'd get to choose between two medical schools that I loved, and I was able to get to this place without adding too much to my app. If your fatal flaw was something like applying late (mine), turning around your second application as quickly as possible can do wonders. Don't under-estimate the utility of expressing sincere interest in your schools either; I wrote the school where I will be matriculating multiple update letters, only to interview on the very last day they were open. I think those letters (and the hand-written thank-you notes) put me over the top, so instead of despairing think of ways you might uniquely (and politely)* express you interest and intents.

Best of luck to everyone on this list, even if they think they'll be visiting the panic thread next year. I promise it's not the end of the world to have to reapply.

If I applied again it would be my fourth. Every cycle gets more successful (and builds my hopes up) but still ends the same way so far with me.

Well, what I told myself last year when I didn't make it off the one waitlist I was on was "It's only a 'no' when I stop trying." There are threads on the boards started by posters who underwent multiple cycles, and eventually got in. If you know this is the right thing for you, keep trucking. And remember, this cycle isn't over yet. I've got fingers to spare now, and they're crossed for you.

Personally I didn't feel ready to reapply at all while I was on a wait list at Mt. Sinai 2 years ago. I ended up sitting one cycle out, and then hitting the following cycle hard and early. Worked out well since I had a lot of time to improve all aspects of my application (EC's, PS, school list, mcat)

Panic.
2nd time applying, Holding only WLs, 4.0/37. MCAT expired so what I need to retake if I reapply? Talk about waste of time.

Wow... If you have those kind of stats and only got WLs.... I've got a snowballs chance in hell then getting off mine. But yeah if your MCAT expires you'd have to take it again unfortunately, before you reapp.

~50 hours until May 15th. Luckily this awesome NBA post-season and Game of Thrones is making the wait easier.....
That episode on Sunday... 😱 pretty good. Peter Dinklage is my hero.

I wish Med School admissions could be determined by a Trial By Combat.....
I think Tyrion and I would have similar chances, especially if their physical capabilities are anywhere near the caliber of the psychological warfare they already employ on us...

Well you may choose a champion of your choosing! Let's just hope our champions aren't pitted against Fire. But if Tyrion can hold off Stannis and 100,000 men, I'm sure you have a pretty good shot at winning! hahaha

No worries, thats a proper 2 two seasons of 24. Gives you 2 hours to reflect too!

Is it by a certain time on the 15th that people can only hold one acceptance? ie. is it May 15th as of one minute after 11:59 PM on May 14th? Or by 11:59 PM on May 15th? I know it doesn't make any difference for WL movement or anything, I'm just curious.

I always thought it was by the end of the day on May 15, but it's probably more respectful to the adcoms and waitlisters not to wait until 11:59 pm.

I dont think we will see movement exactly on the 15th. Its probably going to be a few days to a week for the ball to get rolling.

Hey guys, if I'm on a waitlist and planning to submit the new AMCAS on June 3 (not risking ANY delays after applying late this past cycle), do I have to send an email to withdraw my position on waitlist prior to submission or does it automatically withdraw me with reapplication?

I didn't think being on waitlist delayed submission of your application next cycle. I'm pretty sure you can submit your amcas 2015 app in june and still be on waitlist. Unless you're sure you wouldn't go to the school even if you got off the waitlist, I don't think there's any reason to withdraw from the waitlist.
