You should be above every GPA cutoff with a 3.0 (except for KCUMB), so you can easily submit it with your current transcripts on June 1st to get verified, and then when your summer grades come in you can submit the transcripts for the update. Just make sure you code the retakes properly (i.e. the ones you are taking over the summer should be labeled RNY, RNY, as opposed to R02, L02, etc.).

I also would hold off on submitting the secondaries until your new grades come in, but I would definitely fill out as much of them as you can.

Also, anyone know if theres a thread for all of last years secondary topics or will I have to search each school specific thread?
 
Do people with a balanced 24 MCAT have a shot at any DO schools? If so, which ones?

As long as you get them all in the same week, I think you'll be fine, but if you're worried or have a very high MCAT, you could send them in right away. I think having your files complete by August should be fine. Going from a 3.0 to 3.3 is a huge jump and can definitely change your chances of getting an interview.

Touro CA is a 23. Touro Nevada is a 25. There are other schools with no official cut-offs and have taken people <24 (pikeville, wcucom, etc.)

That makes Touro-NV the only one I know of with a >24 cutoff. The majority of schools either have cutoffs between 22-24, or don't have cutoffs at all.

Also, just to be clear by cutoff, I mean minimum for a secondary, or in other words, the minimum to be considered for an interview.

I just took the MCAT for the first time last week and wow is all I have to say. I felt like it mentally abused and assualted me, I might have to consider pressing charges.

Don't know how anyone else feels here after taking the test for the first time, but I felt like I needed to go right home and sign up for another. I need to be a little more stategic the second time because an endless amount of hours studying might not be possbile for number two.

BTW- I'm definitely an underdog, I'll be checking in on this thread for some positive thoughts. 👍

Where'd you get these from? I'm pretty surprised by the numbers. Assuming these people applied super early and their low score was probably due to physical sciences which DO schools care less about?

A lot of those people have pretty close to average GPAs, and their MCAT are just a couple points below the average, so it really is not surprising. After all, at least half the people accepted into schools have to be below the mean stats.

Trust me.....you arent alone man. When I took it this time last year, I literally went home and planned out my retake. However, 30 days later I got the score and, although not at my average, it was still good enough to apply with. Its a common feeling.

It's a common saying with major standardized medical-type tests that if you don't think you failed, you probably did fail. I hear it from upperclassmen, preceptors, PA's, docs taking their board re-certs. It's hillarious, first thing their colleagues ask is: "do you think you failed" (yes) "then you're fine!!!"


I'm sure you'll be fine.

Your stats are posted on the previous underdogs thread. How many schools did you apply to and how many of those interviewed you?

I think it also goes to show that competitiveness for DO schools begins somewhere around 3.00/3.00/23.

That's hardly the point. Plenty of established and newer schools on the list. A DO=DO.

grad GPA, 3.69 & 3.36-- from two graduate degrees

Prior MCAT in the low twenties. Taking MCAT in three weeks... averaging 27-30.

extensive research & first/second author on multiple publications, strong ECs, international medical research and consulting experiences, working for the last two years on national health campaigns

any thoughts on my underdawg stats?? :scared:
 
What's your Sgpa without grad courses? If it is below a 2.75 then I recommend you delay applying

Decent shot if you can get a 26 MCAT. Do check with schools before applying.
 
How are you guys calculating your averages? Like the first one I took I got a 17 now I'm in the upper 20s

If you started off really low I think it can be misleading. Like my actual score will be a few points over my average

Averages for practice tests or real ones? Because I don't think you average them.

Haha thanks guys. I did have some pretty cool things on my app. I was also working 4 part time jobs totaling 80 hours a week through UG to support my fam.

Yes I also had a 4.0 sgpa which helped hahaha. Sorry I would multiquote but im on my phone hahaha

i'm also SORT OF non-traditional? as i've been out of undergrad for some time but not really out of school.

lol, i'd divulge more information on what degrees but there are way too many friends at my school that are gunners that would totally identify who i am lol 😛

had a really poor verbal score last year which wrecked my chances so retaking this year, also retook two undergraduate courses with C's hopefully grades will boost undergrad sGPA over 3.0

I think you may need a strong mcat or else you'll be fighting an up hill battle.

I'm curious as to how ADCOMs for D.O schools view grad school GPAs. From what I've heard, D.Os are more open towards non-trads that come from another field than allo. Does having a high gGPA from a non-science field help at all?

Some schools will consider uGPA + gGPA in one number, so a grad gpa can definitely be helpful.

Well if it's a masters in a science field than a 3.7+ is good. Any lower isn't impressive because most graduate level courses are structured on the you come to class and half ass the assignments and you get an A scale.
A masters in science will win you nothing though your research might be useful.

Not true. Remember, in many programs you often compete with PHD students in your classes who are very passionate about their area of study and want to really well. Classes are graded on a curve, so it can be a struggle.
