2013-2014 Underdawgs Thread ( Lets get it)

Well, I'm officially an underdog. MCAT came back today; 18 (5/7/6). Any advice?

The bad news is that 18 will not get you into any school.

The good news is that your biggest problem isn't verbal, it's the sciences. Both science sections can be improved by sufficient studying and practicing.

Withdraw your application and plan on applying next cycle. Spend the next six months studying for the MCAT and take it no later than April so you could have your score before the application season starts. You could easily improve your score by another 10 points. Easily.

Hey all, just want to get some feedback from all of you:

Cgpa: 3.64

Sgpa: 3.46

MCAT (got back today) 25 8/9/8

Where do you recommend? Also, how late am I? Any thoughts please

Depends highly on when you're verified and complete. I think if you're not both by November you have officially entered late status. October is the limit. Until the end of September you may be completely fine.

I was already verified on July 27th, but only submitted my app to 1 school since I was waiting for mcat score. Now I have my score and am ready to submit to others, just trying to get an idea of how much of an underdog I am and where I should apply...?

apply broadly and you should be fine.

Thanks for the reassurance; I was convinced I got a low 20-score, so I haven't actually clicked the submit button for aacomas yet. I'll be submitting my app for verification later this week. Hope a completed app at the end of October won't be too late... 😱

Got my MCAT scores back today! I brought my score up to a 28! So that combined with a 3.2 cum and a 3.3sci I'm applying to MSU, OSU, SOMA, Lake Erie, PCOM Georgia and KYCOM (I have family in Michigan/Oklahoma but I'm a Texas resident). I have research experience and have been an EMT for 2 years. Do you think I still have a shot this cycle, I'm gonna submit my secondaries as soon as AACOMAS verifies my new score.

Good job! Up from what score?

Hello all, sorry to repeat but just looking for some guidance.

I got my mcat today 25 (8/9/8) with a 3.64 cumgpa and 3.46 science.

App was verified end of July and submitted to one school, wondering which schools you all recommend I add? And how much of an underdog am
I really?

Yes go for it- very competitive MCAT for DO and pretty good GPA; PCOM ga hasn't even started interviewing anyone yet so trust me when I say your not too late to apply there haha as for the others considering your app is well rounded I think you have a great chance of gaining multiple acceptances just get your app in now

Got 3 secondaries this morning after being verified on 9/20. Pretty nice to get them even though I feel like they may seem automatic

OK, so if I retook in Jan/early Feb I would still have a chance somewhere, pending scores of course. I just called LMU and they said my file would be on hold until then.

I guess I still have plenty of hope because I know a girl who got accepted to UNECOM in the last week of April and my professor's son was accepted to MSUCOM a week before classes started.

It would all depend how high on the waiting list you end up. I think most people are interviewing for the waiting list by January/Feb, but it does happen. I knew one girl whose bf got into Western with a January MCAT. He got a 29 though with a 3.8 GPA.

Not much of an underdog. You're much more of an average applicant. I'd apply broadly and keep a few reaches like CCOM, Western-CA and 2 more.

Hello everyone. I might as well join.

cGPA: 3.19
sGPA: 3.16
MCAT: 10/8/12

Applied to only 9 schools. Interviewed at RVU, got wait listed. Interviewing at LECOM-E soon. DMU and KCUMB shot me down. Haven't heard anything else. I probably should have applied more broadly :\

Not too late to add ACOM, LMU-DCOM, LUCOM etc,,,,

With schools seemingly putting more and more candidates on the WL, makes me wonder if we need to change the underdog status some.

I'm just curious if its not totally uncommon to be complete early on but still not get invited for an interview until dec/spring? I mean of course some of these are silent rejections but just curious if anyone has heard of someone being complete in sept and not hear anything until the fore mentioned dates? ps got my first ii at pnwu! Pretty excited just hoping to hear back from other schools soon

It can happen. They interview their better applicants first.

Srsly this makes me super nervous

Is there a list of schools where secondaries from them actually are something worth celebrating over?

Also, I need some advice:

I have a DO that has promised me a letter and now that the time for the letter has arrived, he will not get back to me or return any of my phone calls and emails. Aside from him, I do have a letter from an MD I did research with but nothing clinical. Any advice on how to get this letter? Or when I should just move on and submit my secondaries?

DO is not the ball game that was just 3 years ago. The stats are going up and people have unrealistic expectations. If you have sGPA <3.3 and MCAT <25, you should realize that all public DO and the more established DO programs are likely out of your league. Yes, every year a few applicants with less than stellar scores get in, but they are becoming like the MD anomaly where you find a non-URM guy with a 27 getting in. If your stats are low, your best bet is on ACOM, CUSOM, MUCOM, LUCOM, both VCOM, LMU-DCOM, WCU-COM (if in region), PNWU (if in region), KYCOM (if in region). Anything outside of this is becoming a reach.

Hey everyone, entering the underdog status. I haven't submitted yet as I am waiting on a DO LOR and not entirely sure where I'm applying yet.

cGPA 3.64 sGPA 3.82 MCAT: July 2013: 6PS/10VR/9BS, 25

I retook the MCATs on the 11th of September and waiting on test results. Unfortunately the day of the test my exam crashed three times before I was able to take it so I was really stressed out on my retake. I am not really sure how it went, and I'm actually worried because of how stressed I got during the test. There was a portion of time I thought that I wasn't gonna be able to take it.

Anyways, I'm hoping for some words of advice, and maybe I can give some in return ^^

:xf: :luck: for my DMU interview tomorrow guys. Im really excited!

The game is very obviously changing. It's no longer the guys with 3.2s/25s, 30 year olds, or people intent only only pcp. It's basically now 3.5-3.7/28-30s overflow from the MD apps that dominate.

Why is MUCOM and LMU in the low stats DO schools? 😕
Aren't both pretty good schools?

LMU is great but being in a very rural location it kills prospective applicants, likewise since it requires a DO letters many if not most applicants opt not to apply.

MUCOM however is probably going to be a 3.6/27 this year without a doubt.

This obsession over increased wait lists needs to stop. It is only one school (NSU) that is making everyone nervous. Average stats may be going up but no need to make everyone anxious for no good reason.

The average stats are only going up for some specific schools. PCOM from what I've seen has always been around a ~3.45/~3.35 for years while CCOM is now like ~3.7/~3.6. And for as long as I remember NYCOM has always hovered around 3.5-3.6 (I do know of one student who got in with a 2.9/35 though non-URM), same with MSUCOM.

Hey Serenade are you going to update the 1st page with people's acceptances? Just because I'm rooting for you guys and yet am too lazy/busy to through the whole thread.

I really should haha... let me try to run through the thread.

Edit: I don't think anyone except Hothamh2o has been accepted and he's no longer an underdog.

Hey guys, I am new and this is my first post here. Thought I would give this a shot.

MCAT:
July, 2012: 20 (6 PS, 5 VR, 9 BS)
August, 2013: 26 (8 PS, 7 VR, 11 BS)

cGPA: 3.72 and sGPA: 3.68

Pretty decent ECs such as volunteering, shadowing a physician (MD) for long time, other clinical experience, president of a student organization at a large university, and some research.

I applied to 24 MD schools (mostly low to mid-tiers) and 6 DO schools (all on the East Coast). Submitted AMCAS on 9/10 and AACOMAS on 9/12. Thank you in advance for everyone's inputs.

It may be wise to actually add a few more DO schools.

you are not an underdog at all.... Apply to more DOs for sure I agree. My friend had similar stats with a lower cgpa/sgpa (3.4/3.4) and only applied to two DOs and three MDs. He has to reapply this year.

Add more DO schools and you should be fine

I actually had three other schools in mind but after research, I realized they required a DO LOR. Therefore, I had to drop them. I have been calling and emailing DOs in my area to shadow for weeks now without any luck. I was hoping to add those schools once I can shadow a DO. Should I wait and see if I can get to shadow someone or should I just go ahead and apply to schools where they don't require a DO LOR?

May I ask which schools you applied to that didn't require a DO LOT?

Need some advice for adding more schools. Retaking MCAT in January. Thinking of adding 3; MUCOM, WVSOM, KYCOM. Any others I should consider?
