2013-2014 University of New Mexico Application Thread

They will probably be sending out the final rejections on March 15 too, not just acceptances and waitlists.
Since they are doing rolling denials this year it really would be beyond cruel to make some ppl wait until March 15th just to find out they are denied. It kind of defeats the whole purpose of letting them know early enough for this upcoming cycle. On the other hand, if the person plans on reapplying to UNM, they probably know that if they change whatever UNM didn't like about their application that they have a great shot of getting in the following cycle since they made it to the last rejections this year. Either way it is such a nerve wracking experience.

I honestly think the whole rolling denial is they look at your application after your interview, score it, and if you don't meet their minimum then you get rejected. If you're in the middle they'll reevaluate in March. Has anyone heard of someone getting accepted or rejected longer than 3 weeks post interview?

Yes one of the people I know that got rejected got rejected 4 months after her interview

Did anyone else have a mini heart attack when they sent the the interview evaluation email back in January? I almost peed myself when I saw an email from UNM lol

Haha definitely me too! I'm constantly on edge with emails. Especially with the rolling denials/acceptances. I can't wait until March 15th. Although that whole week should be nerve wracking. I think people on last years thread got notified the 12th so who know when we'll actually hear!

Well March 15th is a Saturday so we should know by the latest the 14th. At least that is one less day of waiting lol

Everytime I check my email is a mini heart attack! lol and the mailbox is even worse! haha

Those who are still "on the bubble" regarding making the waitlist are probably going to find out March 15th. Those who are scored too low to make the waitlist will probably find out beforehand. The committee is finalizing the ranking of all the applicants and breaking all ties.

What's the ratio? And thanks for the useful info!

OMG !! Today? or just this week. Wow thank you for the info. That just gave me a mini heart attack lol. So ppl who are in and on the waitlist will find out March 15th. Those we are too low will be denied. You think they would have done this during the last 12 weeks of denials they sent out. Gosh I hope I am not one that finds out this late in the game. I also hope none of you guys are. I am keeping you all in my thoughts. we are going to make this together!!

I know they usually go 25+ into the waitlist but how many people are actually on the waitlist

The committee meets until the week of the deadline from what I understand. In the past, the notification email was sent a couple days before the March 15th deadline. The first email is a notification saying that the committee has made their final decisions, ranked all candidates, broke all ties between applicants, and will notify in 24 hours. The next email will be the email notifying you of the committee's decision on your application.

The committee meets more frequently as the deadline approaches. I would assume that the last people to receive rejections would be the 10 or so who were "on the bubble" (since it is going to be March Madness) of getting on the waitlist. I know it sucks, but stop thinking about it until March 15th.

I want to say that the wait list has 50 spots on it. So, approximately 90 people will receive a notice of acceptance/waitlist come march 15!

Waitlist does go to 50. It used to go to 30, but one year there were so many deferrals and declines that the number went to 37 that year. Some applicants who were rejected were getting phone calls up to the day that class started saying that they actually got in. The next year they increased the waitlist to 50.

Honestly, I don't know how the Admissions Office/Committee is doing the rolling rejections this year. It's pure speculation at this point.

I was part of the January interview group. Has anyone else who interviewed with me heard back?

Anyone feeling Green Day? "Wake Me Up When Admissions Ends" Lyrics are quite appropriate...

Summer has come and passed/the impatient will never last/wake me up when admissions ends
Like my MCAT's come to pass/one whole year has slowly passed/wake me up when admissions ends
Here comes adrenaline/pounding through my heart/checking emails again/wanting to find out
As my memory fails/forgetting if my app was even good/wake me up when admissions ends

Have a good day everyone! 🙂

we have almost made it through the week guys!!! ugh... my anxiety is building as we get closer. Hopefully by this time next week they start sending out acceptances and wait list.

Deep breaths. You will be okay.

About 7 to 10 days to go my friends. I know quite a few excellent candidates who have been rejected so far, so here is to hoping that we are accepted! I personally feel like I will be wait-listed or rejected at this point, but you never know. January 14th interviewee here (3 people I can tally in my head have been accepted from our group). Best of luck to all!

Don't lose hope yet!

I inboxed you! and like thechemgal said don't lose hope!!! I am trying so hard to be positive. we have made it this far we should be really proud of ourselves. they have had so many rounds of rejections

Does anyone know an approximate number of people who have been rejected this far? Is the admissions dramatically trimming down the list of applicants or are they more rejecting those applications that need a lot of work? There haven't been any posts on this forum about people rejected (thankfully), but I am just curious in terms of the numbers game.

I can tell you why I was rejected my prior attempt if that helps. Inbox me for details.

There are people who I know who reapplied this year with good MCAT scores, great experience, and good grades who have been rejected. Maybe they did not interview well, who knows. I would hesitate to say that they are only rejecting those who have apps which need a lot of work (though that may just be wishful thinking). As far as numbers goes, I would only be guessing. 36 People are in the facebook group, though that includes the BS/MD people.

That's crazy. I'm scared now. Lol

They must really put weight on personal statements and lors. Plus the interview. That means we all must have that special something...whatever that is! Good work guys!

I agree, Alameda. I know a few students who got into other schools but where rejected from UNM last year. I was re-applying to UNM this year, but withdrew my application after I got the secondary. UNM rejected me last time- no idea why. My app hasn't changed that much, and this time I interviewed at a number of really great school and offered full rides at two of them. (I'll be attending CCLCM.) The admissions process makes no sense, generally speaking, and it's best to not assume that those who are rejected have apps that need work or do not interview well.

Anyway, best of luck to all of you waiting to hear back! New Mexico is beautiful.

A very large part is dependent on what you have to offer the medical community and student body, not purely numbers.

Well said vagabond. They seem to look for very specific people for the program here, and it is not fair to assume those with rejected apps needed work or did not do well in the interview.

CCLCM? Major congratulations are in store, that is an incredibly competitive program. It kills me to know that we are at times not keeping our best and brightest in the state. Best of luck out at Lerner, it sounds like you will go far.

Thanks a bunch, Alameda! I am very excited. Yes, after spending 6 years at UNM (2 BA's) and putting in a lot of work and research and volunteering there, it was definitely sad to leave, especially since my family is there. My only hope is that those who say they want to stay in the state in their personal statements / interviews really mean it. I've known a ton of students who say they want to stay in NM after they graduate but have absolutely no intention on actually staying after they get the M.D.

What I would give to have the Sandias in my backyard again!!! 🙂 A big congrats to all of those who have been accepted into the program this year, and hang on tight for those who are still waiting! This application cycle can be extremely stressful and lengthy, and it's really cool to see the camaraderie in this sub-forum. Good people here.

So I know someone this cycle that didn't get in. When she went to the exit interview thingy she said there were about 35 ppl there. Could have been more. Unm usually interviews around 200 students. I doubt everyone that was rejected so far attended the exit thing. She was rejected in the 9th round of rejections. That was about 4 weeks ago. When I heard last week they said 2 more rounds of denials most likely before march 15th. Who knows when that will happen. Luckily so far none of us have heard anything last week or this week. Her friend with a 3.9 32 MCAT was denied. We honestly can only guess what the admissions committee is looking for. My prehealth advisor told me they really try to blend together people to form a great class: with ppl of all different backgrounds and experiences .

They also mentioned that letters of rec are very important. And I guess the teachers that wrote for this person didn't express WHY the person would be a great physician and what skills the person possesses that would make them a great physician

One of my letter of recs is from an UNM physician alumni. I hope it gives me a few points towards my favor. I need all the help I can get!

I have a good friend who is a 4th year and he volunteers to do interviews for his program. He tells me all the time how many apps/personal statements out there are poorly written despite stellar numbers.

I think we're home free for the week guys! Doesn't seem like much news comes after Wednesdays... (Knock on wood)

Let's hope so! Since it is the week before they have to make final decisions I am sure things are hectic and they might send things out on any day BUT based on the past couple of months you are right... most ppl find out things on tuesdays or wednesdays
