2014-2015 University of Oklahoma Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know what percent of people off of the waitlist are usually accepted by OU?

The past 2 years were both around 20, and the year before that was 43, and out of 60. So that ranges from ~34%-72%.

Edit: 20ish people accepted off the waitlist. Correct me if i'm wrong about a certain year.

Thoughts on the SCM track now in Tulsa?

I think I would thoroughly enjoy it, but am concerned about it being the first year for MS1 to be there? Anyone else with this concern? Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

I was a reapplicant, so I retook the MCAT and shadowed some more.

Interviewed 1/11/15
Accepted 2/7/15

28 / 3.8 / Instate

If you're on the waitlist, the number 1 thing I can tell you to do is STUDY for the MCAT. Yes we all hate the test, but ultimately it's one of the most important parts of your application. Work hard, and you will be rewarded for it. Best of luck everyone, and I wish all of you success in your future health related endeavors.

Also, OUMED is giving preference to the NEW MCAT for the 2015-2016 application cycle. Just a heads up for any reapplicants.

So basically everyone should end up retaking the MCAT? I got a 32 and was hoping that would work for the reapplication. I feel like I'll do worse on the new one. Anyone have any thoughts?

hello fellow waitlisting compadres, I emailed Dotty, and she replied with

"Yes, letters just went out and we have already taken three applicants from the waitlist. Unfortunately, I am not allowed to give any indication as to where you fall on our list! Sorry.
Dotty

3 down. 57 more to go

32 is killer. Something else was wrong in your app, maybe GPA, or your interview, or extracurriculars. Definitely go to the reapplicants workshop, and they will straight up tell you what was lacking. Dotty will also let you know, if u can't make the reapplicants workshop.

MS1 here and, while I do admit I would be a bit worried about how anatomy will be handled, that should largely be your only worry. Most of my class homeschools anyways, you'll likely find that to be very efficient

has anyone heard off of the waitlist yet? I'm just anxiously awaiting
I emailed dotty last Thursday, and she said three had moved of the wait list. Idk if anyone else has after that, but I know if you shoot her an email she will tell you.

That number is up to 4 now...
When did you email her about this, 2/27?
So to keep track it looks like this.
(2/12)-3
(2/27)-4
I feel like there won't be much more movement until 4/30 when student's cannot hold multiple acceptances. In past threads they have found out how many students there are that have multiple acceptances, that would be interesting to know.

I like the idea of keeping track of the movement! kudos for the initiative.

Just got the e-mail about campus assignments!

So does this mean that people accepted to the Tulsa campus will now be giving up their OKC acceptance?

I believe they are all in the same pool of 165 accepted students. It's just 20 of the total will be going to Tulsa, I could be wrong but I don't think this will open up any spots for the waitlist.

I was accepted off the waitlist this morning (3/11) and took my spot! OKC track. 30 MCAT/3.9 GPA Biochemistry. In-state. I interviewed in November.

Hey guys, just wanted to mention something about how the "tracks" work now that the SCM is open to all 4 years. SCM has 25 spots this coming year and will (has?) fill(ed) those spots with the top 25 applicants who indicated SCM as their preference. A couple of those spots are taken by repeat students who were previously on Tulsa track. Additional students who indicated SCM but did not get assigned as such, will be waitlisted for SCM. Should one of the other students opt for OKC in place of SCM, a student who wanted SCM but was assigned OKC will be moved into the vacant SCM spot. If I am not mistaken, OKC will have a little smaller class now with 25ish students heading to the SCM. But the overall number of OKC + SCM will still be about 170. They are really pushing the independence thing when it comes to enrollment, so make sure you seriously consider what campus/program you want, as "switching" will not be an option once school starts. Best of luck!

I'm assuming the attire for the application workshop on the 30th is the same as for the interviews?

I don't know if it helps, but the "Second Visit Day" at OU Med on April 11th says "dress code for this event is business casual. No shorts, grungy jeans, or flip flops."

For an MS1 or MS2… How many hours/day are typically spent in lecture/lab?

Thank you!

don't worry about the specific schedule though... it changes with each week, each course, and sometimes each class.

Did anybody find out anything fascinating at the Reapplicant Workshop? I thought it was particularly helpful even though I generally had an idea of where I could improve. Also, what is the updated waitlist movement?

I had the same general experience, personal statement definitely needs to be reworked.
(2/12)-3
(2/27)-4
(3/30)-6
27 students are holding multiple acceptances. This could mean 27 spots off the waitlist or all 27 go to OU and no more movement.

For those of you wondering about the new MCAT requirements, yesterday at the reapplicant workshop, they said it could only help us. So, if you take it and make a worse score than your previous score on the old MCAT, they will disregard the new MCAT score and keep your old MCAT score. If you do better on the new MCAT, then they will take that score.

Still hoping for an acceptance off the wait list, but if not, then definitely retaking it since it can only be helpful!

Did accepted students have to indicate whether they had multiple acceptances or are there more students who may have multiple acceptances but did not let OU know?

For an MS1 or MS2… How many hours/day are typically spent in lecture/lab?

Thank you!

Morning classes are typically from 8-12 Monday through Friday, although in our Metabolism class we just began it's usually 9-12. It varies from class to class, but there is usually about one mandatory attendance thing per week in the morning classes. Most weeks have at least 1 mandatory afternoon event in one of the 3 afternoon classes that are year-long, and these last anywhere from 2-4 hours. Sometimes you'll go a week or two with nothing in the afternoon, then other times you have a week like this one where we have afternoon stuff every day except Friday. I'm not certain about during MS2, but in MS1 your only lab is during anatomy.

Anatomy is its own different beast. Prepare to live in your mod until it is over.

Did accepted students have to indicate whether they had multiple acceptances or are there more students who may have multiple acceptances but did not let OU know?

See link. Students do not supply this information, it is generated through the Multiple Acceptance Report that medical schools have access to. To answer your question, no. I do not think that there were more than 27 people with multiple acceptances when this number was shared with reapplicants. However, this does not mean that someone could have recently received an additional acceptance...

I wasn't able to attend "2nd visit day." Can an attendee give a quick recap?

Thanks!

Overall, there wasn't a whole lot of new information given to us at 2nd look day! We had a few people present information about the program, toured the campus like we did on interview day, listened to a presentation on financial aid, and tried on white coats to get our correct size. They will be sending us something in the next couple of months that asks for you white coat size, so you may want to try some on before so you can tell them the correct size!

If you got off the waiting list, what is your OU formula score? (if you don't mind sharing)

are more spots going to open up on the waitlist? Just looking for others' opinions

7 have been taken off the waitlist, i'm assuming 26 students who are holding an OU acceptance also have other schools they have been accepted to. Some of these people could be accepted to OU and OSU, or any other medical school that they could choose to attend rather than OU. In the past it seems like the average taken off the waitlist is around 25, so if it is like previous years i'd say about 18 more people will be let off up until August. This being said, with the April 30th date to keep your deposit and looking at dates from the previous year's thread I would bet that most of those 18 will be accepted from May 10th-25th.

It is also important to keep in mind that being accepted and actually matriculating are two different things. Maybe only 25 students matriculated off the waitlist in the past, however, more than 25 acceptances were given out in order to fill those spots. I personally know of people in the past who were waitlisted, accepted at another school, and just never removed their names from the OU waitlist. Therefore, when they were offered an acceptance, they declined it, and it went to the next person. I would except them to get around 40 ish deep on the waitlist in order to fill the 25 or so spots.

Tomorrow is the last day to get your deposit back, so if you do drop a school after tomorrow you don't get your money back.

Accepted. I am out of the country and cannot seem to locate my application ID number to complete the deposit as I am trying to do this via my phone. I intend to accept the offer so unless someone knows how I can locate it, I will just call the office on Friday.

I'd like to add that I'm very pleased and as this has been a very long process, I'm happy it is over.

Edit: Deposit paid. Done deal.
