2015-16 PM&R Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The way I understand it, I think they know if you've applied to just one or both advanced and categorical, but it doesn't come into play until ranking programs. And I think you're correct in that if you really want a single program, you can rank them 1 and 2 and increase the chances of ending up there. Someone can correct me or add to it if I'm missing something here.

You're right

j4pac,
Any advice on what to do if you get an interview invite, but have already scheduled invites for other dates and can't make any of the limited number of dates?

j4pac,
Any advice on what to do if you get an interview invite, but have already scheduled invites for other dates and can't make any of the limited number of dates?

Read my advice thread on scheduling interviews. Eventually you may get the unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on how you look at it) problem of scheduling conflicts. I would recommend scheduling the interview for the latest date offered and asking the PC if there will be any additional dates, and/or to notify you if other dates arise. I would recommend against declining interviews unless you are very confident that you will match without the extra interview and that program is lower on your list.

Has anyone heard from UT-Houston in terms of interview date confirmation yet?? The anxiety is killing me.

They gave out their invites on Friday. They are not going to be that fast. Mayo hasn't confirmed either. Program coordinators are busy people this time of year.

Anyone heard back from Hopkins? The email said we should have confirmation by Oct. 8 (yesterday).
Also, any luck with scheduling PGY-1 Interviews with Hopkins? I never even got a reply from the contact.
I haven't heard back from the PM&R or the prelim either!

Anyone receive confirmation regarding interview dates for Hopkins yet?

I actually received my Mayo confirmation a day after I sent in my dates. Was told an official letter would follow.

Oops. I don't know how to delete my post. Updated about Schwab but someone beat me to it haha

Did anyone else get this message in ERAS?

From : New York Presbyterian Pgm

Dear Applicant, Thank you for your interest in the PM&R Residency Program at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Columbia and Cornell. We are in the process of reviewing all applications. Should your application be selected for an interview you will receive a phone call directly from us at the preferred number on your ERAS application. Our interview season begins in the end of October and runs through early January. All of our interviews take place on Thursdays at the NYP Cornell Campus. Again, thank you for your interest in our program and best wishes for a successful interview season. Sincerely,Cindy Volack,Residency Program Manager
Is this like a thanks but no thanks, don't call us we'll call you type of message? Is this the nicest/most confusing rejection letter? Or perhaps they're just intercepting the massive amounts of inquiries they're anticipating with mid-October approaching soon?

Looks like a "be patient" recommendation to me.

I received the same email. I actually rotated through NYP a few months back. This is how they do it. All interviewees get invited via phone call.

What is the policy on having my spouse come to the dinner the night before interviews?

Ask the PC. I believe that it is generally accepted, but you should probably ask first. I could see it as a positive, unless you feel it would be a distraction.

Sorry about the Mayo rejections guys/gals.

Do you think it also depends on completeness of application? I have Step 1 >235 and Step 2 >250 and haven't heard back from most of the programs that offer early invites. I am US allopathic. I am wondering if some of it has to do with not having LORs yet. I am disappointed but I should have worked harder to have those in on the 15th.

I absolutely think it depends on the completeness of the application. You can have great scores, but they want to see what your LOR's say and they also want to see your MSPE, and they weren't released until 10/1/15. The more complete your application is when you upload it, the better position you will be in. Your application will not be set to the side while the program is waiting on additional information.

Additionally, if you call or email a program, more than likely you will not get a response. They are under no obligation to tell you why you didn't receive an invitation to interview.

Yes I definitely think I missed out on early invites. I have not tried to email the PCs because they are so busy right now. I thought about updating the PCs when I had my LORs in but my application was complete before Oct. 1 so I figured I might have a chance of programs re-checking. I would say to future applicants watching this thread make sure you have your LORs as early as possible especially the PM&R letter. Due to my rotation schedule I ended up asking late.

2 of us here responded to schwab in 30 minutes and got waitlisted when we requested 4 dates. Insane

Same here. I was seeing patients when the email first came in, so I couldn't respond right away until I had finished presenting and the charts were all done. Responded in under 1 hour after the email first went out. I don't understand why they do things the way they do. I called them and was told they send out like way more invites than spots in 1 batch and just take whoever emails them first. All spots were taken in under 30 minutes.

Again folks...yoga, biofeedback, and massage. The system sucks...and quite frankly...may be an attempt to give us all anxiety disorders and OCD. But all you can do is know that you aren't alone...do your best...and do what you can to relax.

I worked with an attending who did her training at Schwab. It wasn't on my radar before then, but she got me excited about the program and it was one of those places that I kind of want to go take a look. I even called another program to move dates so I can fit Schwab in. Oh well.

Hey all, this may seem like a stupid question, but what's the timeline for hearing back from separate PGY-1 years (transitional, prelims, etc.)? I've only heard from one of these programs...was wondering if this is normal, or if I should be concerned.

I've only heard back from one as well.

I've gotten 5 prelim invites. I applied broadly as well.

Damn. Okay, good to know.

On a somewhat related note, damn this process is random. I've been wait listed and flat-out rejected by middle-tier programs, and recently invited to interview at a couple of big names. There is literally no rhyme or reason to this nonsense. What a rat race.

Stay positive everyone--invites are definitely still coming in, and probably will be for a while.
