2015-2016 APPIC Internship Interview Thread

I thought I would be less anxious this time around, having gone through and not matching last year.

But I feel equally, if not more anxious, at this point compared to last year lol. Just want to get the first interview down!

Hopefully that will calm me down
 
So far I have more invites than I expected (I did get rejected from one where I thought I was a "shoo-in" and got invites from"reach" sites) so it may be easier for me to say this but don't give up!

Last year, my friend had 1 interview at this time, he received two more late in the cycle and matched to #3. He is insanely happy at his internship. Two years ago, someone received only 1 interview but she matched there. She also ended up happy with her internship and someone else in our program who had more interviews matched to the same site. I also know people who got tons of interviews but neither matched in Phase I. One got his first choice in Phase II and the other got a site that wasn't her favorite but that she could make work. Later, she got a great postdoc. Both are rockin' their careers now.

I just wanted to say how brave I think you are for posting this. I also admire your perseverance, and I know you will match to a wonderful site this year! Hard work and grit always pay off in the end 🙂. Good luck!

I am in a weird predicament in that I am Canadian but go to school in the US. It is troubling b/c I can't apply for many of the US sites but I have a feeling that the Canadian sites favor CAD universities......or at least that's what I'm telling myself lol

I'm in the same boat and telling myself the same story. Yesterday was absolutely heartbreaking, especially since I put most of my eggs in the Canadian basket. 10 rejections and 1 interview later, I'm just praying that any of my 4 remaining U.S. sites offer me an interview. I'm in the exact same place with Appalachian State. I'm guessing that we might be on a wait list…..or my other guess is that they haven't gotten to our apps because they are in a batch that hasn't been looked at yet. Or aliens came down and stole our applications to this site and used them for fire kindling- which I hear is in short supply up in the U-Verse.
 
Has anyone heard from the Bronx VA?
 
Oh God. Feeling like such a bonehead - I wrote down the wrong submission date for a site that would have been perfect and missed the deadline. FML. Ughhhhh. Just needed to vent.

How has everyone been preparing for interviews?
 
Is one allowed to contact a graduate of ones program who did internship at a site where one has an interview? Is that allowed or could it be perceived as unethical by the site or by the individual?

My program encourages us to do this, as it can be a good way to get a trusted perspective on the pros and cons of that particular site. I think more people do it in the internship selection phase (i.e., is it worthwhile to apply to this site) but I'm sure it could be helpful for getting information about prepping for an interview.

I agree. This is something I did when identifying sites to apply to. The people I asked were at least acquaintances and were happy to help. I found it extremely helpful and often made me more excited about the site. Now that I am at the interview phase, I have briefly talked to some of these people as I have been getting interviews. Although I didn't ask direct questions about what to expect, they generally gave me hints on what interviewers are likely to ask about.
 
Man, I gotta say - today I got my first hard rejection. I'd had a few rejections from other sites before, but none were high on my list, and today was one from one of my top picks. It sucks!! I told myself it would be fine, but even knowing factually how insane this process is, it is always hard to be told you don't make the cut. Oh well, gotta keep chugging along...

Question about UKMC

I noticed invites went out in November (before the application due date). If you applied to both comprehensive and underserved tracks, do they only notify you when they have decided on both tracks, or would it be safe(r) to assume that you are no longer under consideration for the comprehensive but still have a shot at the underserved?

Ugh... I've heard from one NY site and want to book my flight ASAP but I'm hesitant since I'm yet to hear from 3 more NY sites :-/

Also, i forgot my fav story of a friend who did not match at all one year but got her first choice the following year. The best part is that in her "gap year" she moved to a city she had always wanted to live in, met her current partner, and worked at a job she loved. and yes, now she is rockin' it at a fab postdoc.

true, these are anecdotes and I don't want to encourage "pollyanna" thinking in this stressful, uncertain time. But that's just it, it is uncertain and the future is hardly written yet so don't give up!

Actually, never mind! If last year is any indication, a swarm of notifications for these sites are headed our way in the next 2-3 days . . .

This won't soothe the pain of feeling rejected but I think it can help the suffering to accept that sites have to sort from many applications of well-qualified applicants with congruent goals and based only on paper (not you in person) they have to choose a pragmatically limited number to interview, based on their best guess of "fit" and the likelihood that you would match with them. Just as you are trying to "read" the site, they are trying to "read" the application and it can be true that you have qualifications that are outstanding--but may not "fit". (eg: lots of research experience, your advisor raves about your research skills but the site knows they can offer little in this area--they may not invite you because they view you as over-qualified and likely to want a place to use those skills...) I know it seems like a Catch-22; it is a complex, unwieldy process. AND most candidates find their place and often are very happy at a place they did not see, at this stage, as their destiny. It is very hard to trust the process...but it is what we have and works better than what used to be.

It's so frustrating that being "overqualified" can even be a consideration. In school psychology, you can complete your internship and obtain a license without ever being supervised by someone with a Ph.D. in psychology, so, I've completed by Ed.S. internship and am a licensed school psychologist, but still need to complete my Ph.D. internship. I thought indicating that I'm already licensed could only help me, instead it seems that the schools don't want me because I'm "overqualified" and the clinical places don't want me because I don't have enough experience outside of the schools. We signed something agreeing to take the positions and we applied so clearly we are willing to take the position for the price they're offering to pay us, so the typical concerns regarding hiring someone overqualified shouldn't seem to not apply to this process....

I think doing so is smart. You're not asking anyone to break the rules... Just getting info on the site. As I interviewed, sites often brought up former interns from my program (is hey, how's so and so? She was a great intern. Definitely feel free to contact her to get her impressions of what it's like here)

For those who applied to Virginia Tech's Counseling Center, did you get a random email from Virginia Tech saying a Scholar account was created for you? I haven't received an interview notification at this point, but I'm guessing that this is a positive sign?

If it's any consolation, I have never seen any one being passed over for being "over-qualified" in my years and across sites of reviewing applications. At the VA sites I've trained/worked at, we've always gone the "best available" approach when ranking. No reason not to.
 
I have heard that it's less about "you're overqualified and won't want to work here" and more about "you already have lots of experience in what kind of training we offer, so we don't offer you anything good for you." Like, let's say you've done tons and tons of work with psychosis and the program prides itself on giving people lots of training in that regard (which is an experience that's often hard to come by in grad school). They might consider you not a great fit, since you'll already know much more about their primary focus than other interns and so you won't be learning as much as you could be on internship. I don't know if that's always the case, but that's at least what I've heard. *shrug*

Ugh...I feel that. Still waiting on 14 this week. I definitely will not be able to focus on ANYTHING. Hopefully good news is on its way!
 
Eight of the sites I applied to list notification dates after December 15th. They range all the way until 1/11/16. That is a lot of waiting! I'm not sure my self-distraction tactics will work for that long. Anyone else in the same boat?

Ok, so a question for current and past interview-ees. because I have interviews on two coasts (and dates rarely lined up as they should), I have found that it is cheapest for me to go from site to site back to back. However, this means I won't be at my apt for about 3 weeks straight! Would it be restful and recharging to spend extra money (and time) going home for a night or two (there's no one at home but the kitty who will have frequent visitors regardless)? or would this not be restful at all as it involves extra travel and it's not like my studio apt is especially comfortable or anything? I mean I guess I could grab clothes/do laundry but I probably will just crash and sleep for a day. thoughts??

Are you on one of the coasts or in the middle of the country? I had the same predicament. I decided that it was worth going home on weekends, primarily because my partner is there and can give me support. Plus, I live on one of the coasts, so the travel isn't terrible (at least for half of my interviews).
