2015-2016 University of South Carolina Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Out of state applicant and haven't heard a word! I sent in an update in January with transcript and some certifications from an undergraduate medical academy I completed. Office of admissions thanked me for the update via email, and said they would be with me shortly. Anyone get rejected or acceptance letters out of state?

Thank you for the response jj216. I also wanted to let everyone know they said they would be interviewing through March, and that everyone at my interview day (~16 people) had 1 on 1 interviews. A previous poster had mentioned 2-on-1 interviews, but it seems the new committee members have completed their training. If anyone has questions about the interview experience please feel free to ask. Good luck everyone!

Has anyone that interviewed 2/24 heard back yet? And for those of you who were put on hold, did you receive a letter in the mail or an e-mail?

You'll most likely get a letter in the mail saying you're still being considered

I got the hold letter today. Anyone know the chances of getting accepted after that?

I heard they were a week behind from all of the flooding in Columba last year. It sounds like most of the movement on the hold/wait list happens after the deadline to claim acceptance when a lot of people with two offers may officially decide to go elsewhere

Has anyone who interviewed on 2/24 heard anything back. I'm sitting on ice.

They told me they sent out hold letters on Monday, so I'm assuming they've already called the people who have already been accepted. I haven't gotten mine in the mail either, but they sent it by email when I requested it since I used my home address on my app. If you haven't heard anything I would assume you're on hold for now.

I'd recommend relaxing for a few weeks and once interviews are over contacting admissions to find out where you're at on the wait list ranking wise. Most movement indeed won't happen until people with multiple acceptances have to pick a school and last year the list moved pretty quick after that point.

I sent them an update and they said they're pretty much done sending out interview invites. They are sending out final notifications now.

Has anyone who interviewed last week heard anything?

Haven't heard a peep which seems to suggest a hold. I wish they'd e-mail rather than send snail mail.

Is there a class of 2020 Facebook group yet?

Does anyone know what the class size will be this year? Has it changed from last year? Also is anyone going to create the FB page? I think someone should 🙂

Heard the class size is set at 100

It's always 100. The new student # fluctuates with the people from the class before that failed. For example, if they had 4 people fail the year before then there will be 96 new students and the 4 repeats.

@Warderino92 Could you answer a few question about the curriculum and what the schedule is like for an M1? During the interview the current students told us that they usually have exams every week and that the curriculum is traditional but integrative. So are there group based learning styles and problem based learning as well?

PBL first semester consists of a single case you get that they tried to integrate within all of the classes for about 2 weeks when all the classes were teaching something related to the digestive system. They ended up telling us what the problem was halfway through in one of the classes which spoiled it for us but whatever. The only group learning is your anatomy group and the discussion groups for intro to clinical medicine where you talk about a book for the semester.

Second semester is a little more involved where our book groups get PBL cases each week for about 4 weeks and we have groups for neuro anatomy lab. Generally except that one point in first semester all the courses are teaching a different subject completely.

Thank you !! Could you tell me what a days schedule is like for an M1? Are classes held from 8:00 am- 12:00 and then the rest of the day is free study or how is the day structured?

Has there been any sort of movement at all?

Pretty sure there isn't a set wait list yet (or at least that's what it sounded like when I contacted admissions). They are finishing up interviews this week and will create the wait list.

That is correct, there is no official list until after this week finishes. There will be some movement but not the mass movement that happens after decision day.

Has anyone been accepted with less than a 505 MCAT so far? Trying to see how heavily they look at that. Mine's pretty awful.

I was accepted with a 505. That was my second score. First score was a 501. I don't know if they average or take the most recent, but if they average it that would have been a 503. I had a pretty good GPA and some unique ECs.

Thanks! Were you accepted right after your interview, or were you put on hold first? I got the hold e-mail... 501 was my best MCAT 🙁

I know a few people that didn't receive an offer with 35+ MCAT scores

The school puts a LOT of stock into your interview so if someone interviews poorly and makes it seem like they only wanted to be here as a backup the adcoms will generally see it and react accordingly.

I know two people that got in today. Sounds like things are beginning to move along

I'm assuming the people like me who haven't heard back today will get a letter next week?

Nothing in the mail today. Really wish they sent emails instead of snail mail. This waiting is awful!

I think everything will be email unless it's a denial letter
