2016-2017 California Northstate University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I added the school the first day the primary could be submitted. I was verified June 10. I think I should be in the first wave of applications they saw.

I guess what I'm worried about is whether they screen out applications over a certain threshold too.
They probably do. They could also be doing a holistic screen rather than a stats screen. If you match their mission, maybe you're still getting one? Honestly, some of the schools' screens are crazy random it seems.

IS verified on 6/11
Hoping that I'm just being ridiculous and not screened =\

for those of you who have submitted secondaries, did you receive a complete email after the supplemental received one? if so, what was the timeline like?

Rising M2 here at CNU, pm me with any questions! Hope to see you all at interviews this fall 🙂

Why do you think the MCAT average at CNU is relatively high but the GPA is low? Do you think admissions emphasizes the MCAT more than anything else?

Also, what have the students been doing this summer? A couple of my friends are doing research at their school/other hospitals and clinics/other states, and I'm curious about the opportunities at CNU since it is new.
Thanks!

I think they tend to choose applicants with higher MCATs over higher GPAs because MCAT score is more of a predictor of Step 1 score than GPA is. Also, like someone mentioned above, a large portion of CNU students come from UCLA and Berkeley, where GPA deflation is rampant.

I would say most of us (myself included) are doing research this summer, either at CNU or another location. I had no problem finding a research opportunity at another medical school. A lot of us are also volunteering, working, studying, traveling, or some combination of those. Tahoe trips, Yosemite trips, beach trips, Vegas trips, and SF trips are also happening 🙂

so the word limit is 250 words but the character limit is 1782....should we stick to 250? one of my essays is like 257 and it's less than the character count so I don't know what to do...

I have the same problem, may be it is an error on their part

did you two end up submitting responses that were over the word count, but under the character count? have the same problem lol

I submitted under the character limit but over the word limit. Hopefully they don't nit pick applicants for not following the poorly worded instructions

Any insight to how the screening works? I'm IS (and actually pretty much in town) and still haven't received a secondary 🙁. Verified 7/7/16

I don't think they do because my stats are high too but I also have a ton of ECs. Verified 6/25 got one last week.

By reading this thread, I am curious as to how CNU screens for their secondaries. Not to scare anyone, but I got a very quick turnaround. I was verified 7/18 (~2:30 PM ET) and got my secondary the same day (~6 PM ET). I thought they didn't screen. I'm OOS URM, and I don't think I have amazing stats in comparison for those that still may be waiting. I know my personal statement follows their mission really close, but I'm curious as to why I had such a fast turnaround.

The only thing I disliked is that their email said "The deadline to complete and submit your Supplemental Application is 21 calendar days, which begins the date you receive this invitation e-mail." It forced me to put it on my priority list.

According to MSAR they screen - I had to wait a while for mine (verified 6/30 and received secondary on 7/14). I'm not sure how they screen though - I'm also OOS URM and I don't think I have great stats either but idk. This whole process is...interesting.

verified before June 24th, IS with avg stats but above their avg, also haven't received a secondary yet :/
I wonder if I should call to inquire if I haven't received one by next week?

The same for me, I'm worried that my spamtrap may have rejected their email. That happened to me with Stony Brook, but they sent me an email asking if they could send the secondary to an alternate email.

@nosarcasm
Curious what you're thinking now that i assume orientation and stuff has happened.

Also, do you happen to know what the clinical opportunities are? How about research? Opportunities for research at other schools or something during summer months?

Thanks so much! I know you might not know the answers as you're starting but any insight would be helpful!

Hey everybody. Rising M2 here at CNU. Feel free to ask questions on this thread or privately message me with any questions as well. I hope you all have a successful application cycle!

I'm about to submit a secondary but worried about their "No AP Credit recognized" requirement I just noticed 🙁

http://medicine.cnsu.edu/shareddocs/CNUCOMAdmissionsRequirements.pdf

If my AP credit was recognized by my undergrad institution for something (e.g. one of the two Physics semesters) and I don't have extra, am I just screwed? Figure I'll be calling the office of admissions tomorrow, but maybe someone around here knows the answer...

I haven't either! I received secondaries from the UC's but not this school. Weird...
I haven't applied to any other Cali schools haha but i'm OOS. Are you IS or OOS? Jw if it could possibly make a difference

I have some serious concerns about this school, this school is a "for-profit" school so that means its underlying mission is to generate profit that kinda conflicts with education IMO.

did you apply?

Did anyone get a confirmation of payment/receipt of secondary once they submitted their app?

Can I get some feedback on how to handle the Extracurriculars/Work Experiences section? Are people just copying (or editing slightly) what they put in their AMCAS?

Seems really redundant but I'm not sure how much I can change of the EC/work descriptions.

That's what I did! I agree it seemed very redundant.... I didn't copy over any extra "meaningful" descriptions though

Still haven't received a secondary, called and they said they were still reviewing my primary...should I be concerned? :/ Anyone else in the same boat?

@brb in the same boat ... sad life. IS applicant and was really hoping for some love from this school

CNS have financial aid ... like gov loans and stuff? ?? i got secondary from them...

Is this prompt optional?

5. Summarize information that may provide the Admissions Committee with a deeper understanding of your personal strengths and/or accomplishments not previously reflected in your AMCAS application. (250 word limit).*

+1, IS applicant as well. This is only their second official AMCAS cycle, so they may be running a little behind. Don't give up hope yet 🙂 (at least that's what I keep telling myself)

For Part IV, are there character limits for the description part? They only gave a very small line to write it, but doesn't indicate any restrictions, which is very confusing.

i sent in a secondary already but this school started kinda scaring me 🙁 I heard something about not getting federal loans or something, can anyone clarify?

Also since we are applying to only its 2nd class, we have no idea yet about what kinda match rates its gonna have...Can anyone clarify these points please? I dont mean to put anyone down but I literally just found out about the financial loan thing

I don't have details, but both points are true from what I know. But you just figure it out. Look on page one of this thread if you want loan info.
