2019-2020 LECOM-E Post Bacc (Masters program)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! I applied to this program and am really interested. My gpa is relatively okay at 3.5 but my MCAT is pretty rough at 490. Was wondering if anyone who had gotten into this program had any similar stats? thanks!
I have seen a couple get in with your stats earlier in the cycle. Just apply and see! Worse case scenario you lose $50

Hey folks, I'm a fellow applicant currently waiting for his decision back, but I'm extremely nervous about it. Just wanted to see if anyone would be willing to share their stats so I can see what the accepted applicant range is. Any help would be very, very appreciated.

I was super nervous that I wouldn’t get accepted and I ended up getting in and will be attending! 3.15 cum GPA and 3.03 science. I did not submit an MCAT, I just used my AIS!

Hey, I feel you I was in your same shoes, I had a sGPA of 3.2 and cGPA of 3.35 and AIS of 112 and I was accepted, so don’t lose hope!!

They’re relatively fast on getting you your decision. Don’t worry too much! Excited to get to know all of you. Anyone want to plan on doing a study group?

A study group would be awesome. The classes are in block format correct? Just like med schools?

Jamie said that they can use the MMS grades to recalculate gpa if needed.
Oh okay, thanks for the information! Also, I was browsing some of the forums from the previous years and found the course schedule for the 2017 fall post-bacc schedule which should give an idea of how the curriculum is structured for anyone that is interested. Another thing I found was a 30-page document that someone compiled with tips and perspectives of students that went through the post-bacc which has been great reading and getting some insight from people who went through the program; it is long but very informative.

That’s super helpful!

It has taken my about 5 1/2 years of college for me to get really good study habits. Definitely willing to share my study habits when we all get together. Went and visited last week, so beautiful and so many places to go! When is everyone moving up?

Same here and I'm assuming it will be in block format so that way we can focus on one class at a time for exams. I am going down this upcoming Wednesday to check out a few apartments and the city. I was thinking about moving in a week or so before the start of the program.

Does anyone know how big the class size is? Can’t see to find it anywhere online

Does anyone know if orientation starts August 4th or August 5th, the same day as the first day of classes? Thanks!

The packet that was emailed to me says August 5th Orientation/Classes Begin so I’m assuming that means they both start the same day!

In recent years it has been almost 200 when it was the Postbacc but the medical science masters in Bradenton was only like 80 so I think it depends on if they’re going to cut enrollment because it’s a masters program now

I’m pretty sure the exams are on all of the subjects. At least that’s what this years’ schedule looked like. It was comprehensive instead of cell bio exam, biochem exam it was just Test 1 - 3 weeks in, test 2 - 2 weeks later kind of thing

Hey everyone, I was a post-bacc last year, and am currently finishing up the MS-1 year. If anyone has any questions about the program or LECOM, please feel free to reach out.
I know a lot of people ask this but I’m your class, was there a lot of people who met the requirements who didn’t get to go on to the med school/dental school? Or basically if you meet the requirements is it practically guaranteed you’ll get in to your desired school?

Someone from the Bradenton campus on their forum said it was in a block format, maybe I misread or it’s how they do it there. I figured since the post bacc is transitioning to the MMS, they’d be following that format too.

Anyone heading to the June 7th On Campus Day? It was mentioned in an email Jamie Murphy sent about 2 weeks ago.

Hahahahha that’s what makes it so difficult. Their post bacc wasn’t, some people decided to go to Bradenton because it was in block format. Not sure if they will be changing that guess we will find out June 7th.

I don’t know a single person who met the requirements and didn’t get in. However, I do know that in past years people who got in trouble outside of school had acceptances revoked. From my experience, anyone who met the requirements and took the interview seriously got in.

How was the level of difficulty of the classes? From the tips and perspectives document, they said it was really tough but I found a few quizlet flash cards for the post bacc for the different courses and it didn’t seem as hard as they make it out to seem. What’s your $0.02?

This makes me so happy thank you

Classes are very difficult. Specific information may not be very complicated, but the volume is incredible and you are expected to integrate information. You are rarely asked "what is this?" or other 1st order questions. An example of a question might be "a patient comes in with X, Y, Z symptoms and vital signs, what is the mechanism of action of the medication you would use to treat them?". In order to answer that question, you need to know what the patient has, which medication to use, and how that medication works. If you don't have one of those down, you won't answer the question. However, people who work hard do well. I think the people who didn't take it seriously are the ones who didn't get in. Also, this is just my guess, but I would estimate only 30-40% of the class made it through last year. So, it's definitely tough but if you are willing to work hard you should be good.

Awesome! Thanks for that information!

Fyi this program in Erie is not at all going to be the same format as Bradenton.

It will stay the same way as this year but be a month longer in the fall and spring. The material will be the exact same as postbacc, but in each semester will have an additional 4 credit class called "clinical integration", and it looks like the class size will be the same too.

Even though this is now a masters, the program will be very similar to the postbacc program. Bradenton and Erie are essentially two different schools so there is no similarity terms of the program design and material.

My portal changed today to "the admissions committee has made a decision on your application and you will receive a letter within 30 days". How soon after this did you guys receive a letter? I saw some of you said you emailed and they let you know? Don't want to be a pain, but also really eager to know!

Mine changed on a Wednesday and I got the letter in the mail the following Monday!

Got accepted today!! Can’t wait to start with you guys!!

I got accepted to the program and I am very nervous if I will still not get to medical school even after I pass the requirements. Please, if there is anyone out there who have done the program and now are in medical school. I am not sure if I should apply to other schools this cycle as well.

This program was a post bacc and just switched to a masters this year but I went to an open house last thanksgiving and a lot of the students that gave tours and talked to us during the open house went through the post bacc program and were then in the medical school. I’m pretty sure if you meet the requirements you’re pretty likely to get in. You can email Jamie Murphy he is super helpful and nice and I’m sure he could give you the statistics on how many people go on to medical school.

My portal updated to "The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days." But I didn't receive a email from Mr. Murphy. Is this bad news?

No. I got that and even emailed him, he told me I should get the letter in a couple of days and I got accepted.

When you emailed him, did he say you got in? Or did he avoid the question?
My letter was dated the 24th and reached me on the 27th, the day after the portal changed so I wouldn’t worry much until you get the letter. No point in freaking out won’t let you know either way

Yea good point. I was just worried because some of the earlier applicants got an email from Mr. Murphy saying they got in. Regardless, I'm thankful that Erie has its things sorted out. I applied to Bradenton MMS a week before Erie and they lost my transcripts and they refuse to update the portal, reply to emails, or pick up the phone.

Everyone gets their admissions decisions by mail now. The only reason the earlier applicants got their decisions by email is because they hadn’t changed everything yet and couldn’t send letters out (likely because they didn’t have all the information yet). It took over a month before I actually got my paper acceptance so that’s why they started with emails, now they only do paper since they have most of it figured out. I wouldn’t worry too much it’s a pretty large class size.

I'm a Post-Bacc from this past year. I sent a screenshot of the score along with the AAMC ID to Jamie via email.

hi all i was wondering the approximate turn around, i turned in my app 5/1 & was told on 5/3 that the app was processed. from your own experience, how long does it take for them to make the decision?? Thx!!

I requested my username and password on 4/26 and my portal said that a decision was made on 5/2. My decision letter is the mail right now, so that may take another week. I overnighted my transcripts, LORs, and SAT scores. You have to manually enter your grades in the portal and I had a few questions about entering my science grades, so that probably took an additional 2 days because of the back and forth with emails.

So I would say 2 weeks at the max. If you overnight stuff and don't have any issues, your decision may be mailed out in 7-10 days.

Very very short amount of time. You’ll probably get a letter in a week/ week and a half max

thank you so much!! trying to figure out my life and where it's going to be in the fall, so I'm glad to hear that the turn around is really quick!!!

Just got my MMS letter and this is what it says to "be eligible for acceptance to the D.O"
  • 3.2 MMS gpa or higher
  • Successful interview
  • MCAT score 40th percentile or higher
    • AIS score of 113 or higher will waive MCAT requirement.
Other than that, I've been looking at Erie's matches for the class of 2018:
  • 16-anesthesiology,
  • 1-derm,
  • 10 radiology,
  • 1 neurosurgery,
  • 10 orthopedic surgery
  • 1 urology
I still don't get the hate people have towards Erie, considering it has better matches than a lot of state MD schools. And they have 58 internal medicine matches, which makes you eligible to apply for gastroenterology and cardiology fellowships. They don't have any plastic surgery, ophthalmology, or interventional radiology matches. I guess if you really wanted to be a plastic surgeon you can always do a fellowship after a general surgery residency. Maybe Erie is not the right choice if you wanted to match interventional radiology or ophthalmology.

I feel it's a good program because it almost guarantees admission. I understand why they don't want to use the word "guarantee"; because things like felony convictions and similar stuff can happen.
