2019 Match Results

Every field has bad doctors who almost have close to no competency to manage things medically outside of their field. Psychiatry is no different in this respect. However with psychiatry there is simply a lot more you need to put up with in terms of the questionable nature of many approaches and paradigms. I think the great thing about Psych is that you most of the actual fun psych you can handle outpatient as a primary care physician.

For me, the only enjoyable psych cases were inpatient ward. I was fascinated by acute mania and schizophrenia. I despised all outpatient days... this is coming from an outpatient primary care guy

My school had a few solid local matches. One solid one.

USMD match rate for psych this year was 83.8%, however. I suspect the DO match rate this year will be under 70.

Personally looking back this year, location was almost as important as specialty. I wish I had dual applied. But in the end I soaped into a solid program that has strong fellowship match rates and closer to home than a lot of the psych programs I interviewed at. So it worked out for me. Just be cognizant of the fact that the match is pretty ridiculous process.
Would be very surprised if the DO match for psych is under 70%. It was 84% for USMDs last year too and 73% for DOs. This match had more former AOA psych programs participating too so I’d imagine it’s close to the same match rate.

I'm the opposite. I find acute mania and schizophrenia to be extremely medical. No communication with the patient.

Forgive my ignorance (or not, that's fine, lemme have it) but it seems like there are (comparatively) a lot of UMich matches this year.. This is only my second year kind of following along with match lists.. has UMich ever taken DOs before this year?

The psych average for UsMDs last year was 86%. Most programs were already in last years match.

Ya I think that’s why I loved it. I got to see a real change when we got the meds going. I also was fascinated by what their brains would come up with. I loved the stories.

UMich is known to be anti DO. Not from UMich, but I have heard ACGME program directors say “why would I take a DO they have their own match that they won’t let us in”. It’s a thought, but maybe with a merger those types of programs will start taking DOs... and maybe Michigan is one of them.

Its almost comparable to last year when DOs matched surgery, ortho, and plastics at U Wash. This year michigan has uro, IR, psych, and maybe another I am not remembering.

It is a little weird imo. lol

Even this year seeing a number of Uwash matches. Guess they are become more open to DOs. I’m sure these are top DO applicant tho.

Before this year I had only seen frequent Gas (usually 2 a year DOs) and i think PMR matches (their class of 2019 PMR is 4/6 DOs). This is the first time I'm seeing DO surgical matches at UMich though which is sweet!

Do these match results (seeing as they look pretty good, comparatively to previous years) indicate regarding what we can expect post-merger?

Don’t know yet. A lot of the competitive matches were still in AOA.

Maybe, gotta be extremely cautious however in making any assumptions that the merger will open "all doors" for osteopathic graduates. The old adage that programs that didn't take DO's will still not take DO's still generally applies. However, starting to see more matches to programs that historically never took one. One that comes to mine is the match to IM primary care track at WashU this year.

It's the same thing that happens every year. People cherry picking a couple good matches that doesn't mean anything. All it is, is people that would have gone competitive AOA now going ACGME. If anything, the herd is going to separate. The best people are going to have better and better matches, but the bottom half the of the class will suffer as the massive expansion of DO schools continues. SOAPing and unmatched are going to increase, placement rate will go down every year. The middle of the pack students will become a dichotomy, unfortunately more ending up in those bottom half of matches.

I think we will see more good surgical matches in ortho / ENT next year. For example, my buddy got a fair amount of MD interviews in ortho this year despite only applying to 20 MD programs near his home state, one of which sent him a "hey we really like you, and would be open to taking a DO with your application" email, but he didn't want to risk / really liked our home DO program it so he stayed in the DO match and matched at his #1. This will be the most interesting aspect next year. Some applicants may get 3-5 MD interviews in those specialties if they are lucky, and I am sure most will rank these programs above the DO programs, which will result in a handful (or more) of them actually matching to those places.

This is the most interesting thing that will come out of the combined match IMO. Some DO applicants that may well have matched MD will be able to just rank on preference rather than fearing going unmatched and therefore sticking with the AOA match.

Guys like your friend can just interview and rank however they choose. We may see better than expected results due to this phenomenon. The AOA match system has long been the stronghold of superstar Med students interested in surgical specialties, as well as a place for folks who wouldn’t succeed in the NRMP match for less competitive fields.

MI in general is a very DO friendly state, one of the most.

Not sure how competitive Boston U psych is, but I saw on NYITs page that someone matched there
University program in a big cit

Huuge step in the right direction for DOs matching at Mich in more than one specialty. They are notorious for not being DO friendly. Awesome to hear!

I agree. Although we know ACGME programs are not DO friendly overall, the sheer number of DOs applying and sticking around to rank these programs will drive the acceptance numbers up because SOME will get in. There are many DO applicants applying to surgical subspecialties with 260+.

This is also good news for DOs applying to surgical subspecialties in the previously AOA programs as the top students may be accepted into ACGME leaving more spots for the rest of the applicants. I wonder if the number of unmatched applicants will ultimately go down. If DO preceptors hold to "only taking DOs" then this should be the case I would expect to see.

This is the gestalt that I'm getting. More doors are cracking open.

I hope so! the whole merger thing and its effect on DOs is so complex I really dont know what is going to happen its so hard to predict I wish it was more black and white lol

It is. But for the really competitive specialties I think it’s more black and white (as long as the DO preceptors/programs stay loyal to DO applicants. If they do, DO acceptances into these specialties Should increase.

I have never seen ob/gyn listed amongst these 'competitive' specialities. Are you basing this on # of positions?
There were only three unfilled ACGME ObG positions this year (two were at the same institution). Many well-qualified candidates did not match.
There have been 0-3 for several years now.

Thats why I honestly believe the UMich Uro this yr was the best DO match ever from what I’ve seen lol i could be wrong though

The funny thing is that this guy ranked Mayo higher and was pissed he didn’t get Mayo. Absolute rockstar of a human. 260s/270s was a device rep before medical school and was making 200k already.

Sometimes I go to the R1 Residents list for U Wash ortho and look at the DO resident's profile just to see what an absolute glorious beast of a human looks like.

Just looked him up. I am a straight male, but almost fell in love with this absolutely glorious looking beast who accomplished the "impossible". Lol

Honestly COCA should just be like, hey you wanna open a new DO school? "Cool Campbell is your standard. Do that and we will let you." They seem to be the best of the new schools, I like what they're doing.

Meanwhile in reality:

COCA: "Hey, wanna open up a new DO school?"
NS: "Ye'."
COCA: "Cool. Campbell University is your standard. Do that."
NS: "Nah."
COCA: "Sweet. I already forgot who you are or what we're talking about because I have 13 other schools to open. K bye."

8 ortho. Sheesh. Looks like Ohio-com and campbell both faired better than schools like KCU/DMU. Interesting dynamic.

But is sheer number of ortho really a measuring stick? I don’t really care about match lists because they’re very individualized and don’t reflect what SDN think they do. Idk I’d go more off of stats like 85% got top choice or something like that

This might be a dumb question.. but whatever.

In general (for DO schools), what do people consider the most important things in a match list? I was under the impression that more ACGME matches and a broad spectrum of specialties were better. I get that the number of kids to match certain specialties can vary year to year... pending on what clinical interests are... but what are the best indicators that a school has their stuff together?

Nothing. There is nothing to gain looking at a match list for anything except seeing where you might have some future connections.

Apparently it’s ortho matches...
