2020-2021 Postdoc Interview Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I just had a place email me to cancel my interview because they apparently picked someone else already! Except a) I'm flying across the country and they know this, b) I switched around another interview to accommodate them, and c) had I not switched my schedule around, I could've fit in another interview at a really prestigious place (that I now have to FLY BACK ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR).

I'm so annoyed and I don't even know whether it's worth it to respond to them.

yikes, tough situation. I would say, as hard as it is, give them grace. Thank them for considering you and for letting you know that you were no longer under consideration, wish them all the best, and move forward. At the end of the day it sounds like you still have some great interviews. Psychology is a SMALL field. You can hold your head high knowing yoI handled it well even if they didn’t, and you haven’t closed any doors for the future. Who knows what the next 5-10 years might hold

I am enraged on your behalf! I was feeling sorry for myself due to radio silence for days, but... this is worse.

In reality there isn't much you can do, but I do think its worth email them and letting them know not only how inconvenient it is, but all the cost and consideration that has been wasted by this site. Possibly advise them not to do this with future applicants....

Frankly, I would advise against this. I know it’s really inconvenient but this is all part of the process, albeit a crummy one. It sounds like the site had an applicant who received an offer from another site and asked for a reciprocal offer from this site, and they opted to make one. It sucks but this is all kosher and sometimes unavoidable. I don’t think there is any benefit to letting them know something they probably already know.

Kind of makes you long for the days of the match!

Some airlines if you call their customer service and explain, they'll let you keep the amount you paid for your flight as a voucher to use at a different time, even if you didn't buy the trip insurance. It's not exactly a refund, but it at least doesn't waste the money. Obviously not every airline will do this, and not every reason will work. But it's worth a shot. Delta let me do it when my brother's graduation ceremony got rescheduled, so it's not unheard of.

luckily I scheduled two other interviews for around the same time so at least it's not a waste of a trip. Thanks for the tips about the airlines!

Has anyone heard back from The Texas Child Study Center for the Primary Care Track? I see that it’s not posted in previous threads and was wondering if this site only takes internal candidates..

Also, do people know what’s acceptable for thank you emails post interview?? If they didn’t give us their email, should we email them? Should we email everyone we interviewed with or just the training director? And are rules the same as internship, where we can’t say clearly how interested we are? Thanks for any insight!!

Depends on if you are doing a match or not.

I followed internship advice/protocol of not sending anything afterward, although I definitely said thank you at the end of all interviews verbally.

People are very split on this; I’m in the “let the interview speak for itself” camp, while others think it’s fine. Just keep in mind that TDs get swamped with emails around this time, and emails tend to not sway interviewers at all, if that’s the intention.

I felt like more so than internship, postdoctoral interviews were trying to gauge my interest but I was quite conservative with that because I wasn’t sure what was kosher, and am wondering if that was a mistake and if it makes sense to make sure they know I am very interested.

This is something one can convey during the interview itself rather than an email after the fact, but it’s up to people individually. I think sites assume you’re interested based on making the effort to apply AND they gauge interest level during the interview when you share why you’re interested in the site for your training.

Many sites are in the middle of internship stuff right now too and since their deadline to submit their ranking is Feb 7th they're probably trying to get all that stuff done first. Also I know the St. Louis VA sent out invites for neuropsych to some friends of mine.

I know some people over there and they have not finished reviewing yet.

Has anyone heard anything from VA Maryland, Michigan Medicine, VA Central Western Massachusetts, VA Connecticut, or VA Puget Sound (American Lake Division) for Neuro? I'm assuming at this point the radio silence means rejection. Still waiting on Dartmouth and the Bedford VA to put me out of my misery 😵

I'm still waiting for VA Maryland as well. Their deadline was a little later, so I'm thinking they might still be sorting through applications.

I’ve been sending follow up thank you emails, especially to sites I’m really interested in. My understanding is you can’t tell sites how you will rank them, but there’s nothing stopping you from showing your interest. I figured the worse that happens is it sits in their inbox, but I’ve gotten nice, thankful emails back from TDs

VA Connecticut doesn't do interviews for neuro

I'm also waiting on Michigan Medicine and VA Maryland. I also applied to VA Connecticut but they apparently don't conduct interviews, so who knows if we'll hear anything unless we're the lucky winner!

I'm the postdeployment track, not Neuro track, but the VA Maryland messaged me and said they are taking last week and this week to sort through applications and are sending out invites as soon as the decisions are made. May not apply to you, but maybe it might?
