Wow, so many lab animal people!
I know right?! Where have they been hiding all this time!SDN is the new hot spot for lab animal!!
There are literally dozens of us!Wow, so many lab animal people!
Oh wow! I know so many ECC people. I thought you were going the sx routeI matched to my #1 hospital in an ECC specific internship!
oh man, not for a while now, coffee! Summer before second year I worked with an ER doc, fell in love with ER. Summer before third year, I spent a week with surgeons, already got tired of orthopedic surgery Realized the surgeries I really like are emergency surgeries. Shadowed a criticalist, was in absolute awe of her badassery. Thought I couldn't be smart enough to be a criticalist, doubted a lot, professor out of the blue told me I should heavily consider CC as a residency, told her I wasn't smart enough to be a criticalist... doubted... doubted... doubted...Congrats everyone! I can't wait until I'm in that position

met more criticalists 4th year, loved it more... eventually I just said "**** it, let's go for it" and here I am. I'm still like 70/30 whether I want to go into an ECC residency or work as an ER doc, but having an ECC internship will 100% help me out either way. And the hospital I matched at likes to hire their ECC residents from their ECC interns, so if I end up deciding to do a residency it works out perfectly.
Thank you!!! I’m really excited for it!Well that's a great accomplishment, congrats
Not too my knowledge unfortunately. I’ve been looking to see who my resident mates will be so I can congratulate them!Is there such a thing as VIRMP posting a list of names and where people went? I'd be curious to just know!
Apparently each university gets a list of where everyone is going as well as where everyone is coming from! I found one person at mine already from UIUC and gets a glowing LOR from bats, so I’ll take that review. Is there such a thing as VIRMP posting a list of names and where people went? I'd be curious to just know!
We should make a Facebook group or somethingThere are literally dozens of us!
(just rewatched that over vacation rotation lol)

So sorry to hear, sending you hugs. Are there programs you're considering in the scramble?Congrats to everybody who successfully matched!!
I unfortunately didn’t match to any of the specialty internships and residencies I applied to this year. Throwing that out there mainly for the sake of any others who may be in the same boat - I see you and I feel you. It stings, but we will figure something out and be just fine.
Congrats to everybody who successfully matched!!

Take heart, @Cephal0pod. I was in your shoes a few years back and it was a major challenge to just to make it through Match Day given the emotional blow and degree of disappointment. I was devastated not to have matched. I was likewise unsuccessful in securing a position during the scramble (which, as @WildZoo mentioned above, is its own ball of stress). Many of my faculty rallied for my case and were instrumental in me securing an out-of-match academic residency shortly after the scramble. About a year into that position, I left voluntarily to pursue my dream job in industry. I've never been happier. Clichés aside, things really do happen for a reason. Skeptical as I was in my younger years, I'm certain of it now. If you're genuinely committed to a given specialty (I believe you're a zoo/aquarium/exotics person- am I correct?), you'll make it happen. Come hell or high water- put that immense energy, devotion, creativity, and drive to work and make a case as to why you're the job applicant your next position can't do without. Maybe these positions would be of interest to you- found them via a quick search on AZA:Congrats to everybody who successfully matched!!

One of my really good friends didn't match so I've been helping him sort through and figure out which programs to contact. It's really crazy the quick turnaroud from "crap didn't match" to "crap, gotta try to have a clear head to evaluate these positions."
I have been there! But I'm sure you will find something great for this coming year, and have better luck next year! I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason, and while the disappointment was immense at the time, I feel very fortunate with how things worked out for me now looking back! I ultimately ended up exactly where I wanted to be.
If there's anything I can help you with, let me know! <3
Thanks for the support, guys - means a lot. I also really appreciate hearing the stories of folks who did not match but still ultimately landed in good situations. I am indeed in the process of applying for some positions outside the match - we’ll see how things shake out!Take heart, @Cephal0pod. Perseverance (and a little luck) are the name of success in this long game of a career. I'm rooting for you!

If you do make a group send me a link. I’m sure it’ll be good to have a group of us prepping for boards together around similar times...We should make a Facebook group or something
This is really important advice. I second this.Explore your contacts, it's NOT the time to be shy about asking for favors. Get outside of your comfort zone to talk with people who can help you.
I'll echo what others have said - regroup, and if this is your true passion/you can't see yourself doing anything else - don't give up! I went through a rotating, and two specialty internships before residency. It was a dark, depressing few years of uncertainty - many lows. You're not alone - my PM box is open as well. Hang in there, remember your worth, and keep going <3Congrats to everybody who successfully matched!!

My advice would be to email them back and ask the questions that you need answered. If you did and it's been awhile, just send a follow up email. There's no need to withhold communication at this point, you're part of the program now and should feel comfortable emailing your future colleaguesCongratulations to everyone who matched this year!!
For those who didn’t match and wanted a lab animal experience- I came across a fellowship opportunity through Michigan State University. See attached if you’re interested!
For those who did match, I was wondering if anyone has heard from their program regarding all the specific things? I was emailed on match day for the initial “yay we matched”, but haven’t heard anything since. I’m trying my best to be patient but I have to plan on moving and am getting anxious. I wasn’t sure if anyone who has matched in the past could say when these correspondences usually occur?
Thank you in advance!!
Did they have surveys on VIRMP? Or are there any other past interns you can reach out to? I'd be hesitant to blow your entire year based on one person's opinion. Never know what might have gone down to sour someone on an experience.Ahhhhhhhhh, I just heard really really really bad comments about the SA rotating internship program of the vet hospital that I got matched with.....
"Bad management, lack of mentorship, no directions, many good specialists left, ..........."
It was from an ex-intern who went through their program only 2 years ago. She actually said the program is garbage! Too bad I don't know any other ex-intern to compare opinion.
I didn't do any externships with this hospital and I regret not to do enough research about them before ranking them, but I don't know what to do now. I don't really have plans to specialize. Doing this internship is solely hoping to gain experience, but the comments I just heard are pretty discouraging. I don't know if it's worth going through with my internship, wasting one year and taking the pay cut, or if I should just give it a try and quit if it's as bad as the comments said. I know about being penalized from VIRMP if I bail out but since I don't plan to specialize I can live with that. What I'm worried about is how bad I'd look in the vet community and which is worse, quit now or quit later if I really experience what the comments said.
