2021 VIRMP MATCH!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you start there, give it a chance, and find out that it's truly horrible, though... my personal stance is take the hit on your reputation and get the heck out. If a job is really toxic, do you want those people in your network anyways? And yeah, vet med is small, but that doesn't mean people should have to essentially "shut up + put up" with soul-crushing work environments.

But I'd give it a chance first.

I agree with Pippy. If you like the city I’d give it a shot. I’m not saying not to believe that person but one persons perception is not necessarily how it will be for everyone. And maybe the program has changed and new even better specialists have moved in that are more your style. You just never know. If you get there and it truly is awful then you can leave at that point. I don’t think anyone at any future clinic (certainly a GP clinic) would look down on you for quitting an internship that wasn’t a good fit. And if they do that wouldn’t be a place I’d particularly want to work either. But I’d give it a shot first.

Ahhhhhhhhh, I just heard really really really bad comments about the SA rotating internship program of the vet hospital that I got matched with.....

"Bad management, lack of mentorship, no directions, many good specialists left, ..........."

It was from an ex-intern who went through their program only 2 years ago. She actually said the program is garbage! Too bad I don't know any other ex-intern to compare opinion.

I didn't do any externships with this hospital and I regret not to do enough research about them before ranking them, but I don't know what to do now. I don't really have plans to specialize. Doing this internship is solely hoping to gain experience, but the comments I just heard are pretty discouraging. I don't know if it's worth going through with my internship, wasting one year and taking the pay cut, or if I should just give it a try and quit if it's as bad as the comments said. I know about being penalized from VIRMP if I bail out but since I don't plan to specialize I can live with that. What I'm worried about is how bad I'd look in the vet community and which is worse, quit now or quit later if I really experience what the comments said. :bang:
There is obviously a downside to taking on the cost of moving somewhere and anticipating you might not stay for very long, but I do think it’s worth trying it out for a period of time and if you don’t feel it’s right for you, you can leave. You shouldn’t base your decision off of only one former intern’s experience, imo.

Thank you all! I think I will give it a try and see how it goes. Hopefully things have changed for the better in their program.
I'll try to find a month-to-month place to rent not knowing if I'll last all 12 months. Sigh.

Those are both worse than the other option -- not quit.

When you enter the match you are agreeing to accept the position you match with. Just like the program agrees to take the person they match with. They have made a commitment to you. If you decide to not show up it will be difficult and maybe impossible for them to fill the position. Being down an intern has substantial implications to the program, their hospital schedule and the other interns.

So you are ethically obliged to live up to your end of the agreement, as with any other contract. I would not recommend starting your professional career by reneging on your obligation.

Who knows, maybe it will be great. And if you get 3-6 months in and it's just intolerable you can reassess.

After a long couple of months of post-match applications and interviews - I was offered a specialty internship today:) Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement, y’all are the best.

Hi will any one please tell about the process and what we should expect to be asked on interviews?

Hi everyone :) Is someone doing a rotating internship in UF and would like to share their experience with me? I am looking into ranking them for next year.

If you reach out to the email on VIRMP, you can ask for the email addresses of some of the current rotating interns! I’m not at UF, but I will 100% give my open and honest opinion to any prospective intern
