You rarely hear of physicians getting fired from the VA. Reading this was horrible.

Near me there was a DPM was fired from a CBOC. Non-surgical doc so she mustve been attrociously bad.

It's wild that the state board didn't have the balls to tell this guy to go pound sand.

It’s important to keep in mind the value of practices that foster growth and ownership.

I have a colleague in a saturated area who had a starting salary of $80,000. Bonus of 40% of collections after $240,000 with conversion to 40% of collections after 1 year. Benefits- medical, dental, vision, 401k. Partnership track 3 years.

In his 2nd year he made $216,000. The starting salary is low, but the point of it is to hold him over as he builds his practice. I just want to point out that someone applying for jobs shouldn’t take starting salary as the only measure. Mentorship and working with a well respected group in the community is the most important thing.

F*** those who takes advantage of new grads though.

Seems like true partnership offered on front end after complete a 2-3 year probation period is the common theme of these low paying, but high potential jobs. Gives both sides a couple years to make sure it is a good fit. There will be near zero turnover of podiatrists in these practices. They just add a new partner every so often.

Yep, most of these practices have an MA and not a PA for the DPM.

They will hire the PA who will learn the tricks of the trade from the DPM and then fire the DPM. The PA will then handle “routine” things and send the surgery to the orthos.

Here is another good job.

They do exist. Sometimes there is already a "hire" before posted and sometimes there is not. Almost all these jobs, this one included can be easily found online.


The department currently has five ABFAS certified Podiatrists (certification required within 7 years of start date) and two APPs.

They have some good DPM jobs and some non-op / wound ones... the latter obviously don't attract top DPMs.

Decent-sized system in south USA, yeah.

Yeah, never hurts to apply. This is a great job for anyone who wants call/inpatient; I'd be amazed if they haven't already hired from local residents or network. A lot of places have to post it for X days or have to do X interviews before they can make an offer... even if they know who they want to hire all along.

I'm sure they will be in big trubble for requiring ABFAS cert, lol. I kinda take it as a bad sign if a job doesn't have a clause like that 🙂

Twin citites is a cool spot. If I was in the market I would jump on that.

THough I've heard thru the grapevine they have signficant budget constraints. K-wire fusion for basically everything. (Could be false).

No way I would go to Shrevport to practice. Even if you 4x my salary I wouldnt go.

OK yes I would thats a lie.

But my buyout price to move to Shrevport is very steep.

I am 95% sure LA scope of practice is garbage

Shreveport is a decent medical hub, they even do heart transplants in that city. Louisiana has ankle for podiatry.

I don’t think scope is an issue. Reimbursement very much is. We are talking hospitals offering sub $40 per wRVU compensation. Not sure they are that low currently but that was initially “offered” to some well established DPMs who were bought/hired by a hospital system outside of Nola.

Village Podiatry associated with PI is all about K-wires because of higher profits in surgery centers....cough, cough I mean they have papers published on how they are just as good.

I think it's a myth that just because you are non-op or do wound care means that you are not a "top DPM". This is only paraded here on sdn because everyone wants to beat their chest and claim they are doing surgery from dawn till dusk 7 days a week. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Will you rather be working in PP making around $100k-$125K doing so called big cases or will you rather work in a hospital group doing non-op/ wound care and getting paid like a real doctor. I know what I will choose.

Trying to get cases for boards is what makes many people stay in PP making low pay and taking free hospital calls and consult just to get surgery numbers.

One can make a very good income and living doing non-op/wound care in podiatry and still be a top DPM. .

I understand what you're saying and I agree, with exception of the above - surgical podiatrists command SIGNIFICANTLY higher bases and rvu bonuses across the board in hospitals and MSG.

100% agree with you.

My message was directed to PP job with full scope surgery vs non-op/wound care hospital/msg job. A lot of folks get stuck in PP for many years with low pay and stay there because of so called surgery. I will happily jump ship, take a non-op/wound care job and earn twice with full benefits (401k, CME, Health insurance etc).

See I work at a “critical access” hospital that is “rural” but I live 20 miles away in a community of 300,000. When people crap on rural jobs and living in the middle of nowhere, Glendive, MT is exactly what they are talking about. I’m sure professionally, this is a great job. You’ll get all kinds of support and you’ll get paid well for little work. But you really are in the middle of nowhere, and Eastern Montana is going to look and feel like North Dakota, not what people think of when they hear “Montana.” Because of location this might be one of the few employed jobs that doesn’t get many applicants. So if you don’t care where you live and would rather have a ranch than city amenities, this is probably a pretty easy job to get.

While it will be a bit less than at a hospital that isn't in one of the most desolate places on earth, I will bet you that they will have at least a few dozen applications - this is in contrast to a hospital in getting over 100 apps (just within the first few days of posting!) for that coveted job. Money talks, and a good portion of new grads would rather live in the middle of nowhere for a few years while earning more than 2x compared to being stuck in crappy private practice.

They will certainly get at least a dozen applicants. There is no guarantee their top choice will accept the position, but someone else will certainly accept.

If this was for an MD might not get a single applicant for months and months at a time with no guarantee the occasional applicant would even accept the job.

Unfortunately I don't think a "good portion" would be willing to go to rural Montana. And this is RURAL. Billings is a few hours away and is....Billings. I think lots of DMU grads would be willing but not sure NYCPM...

So I think the description of 'one of the most desolate places on earth' seems reasonable.

I guess I should clarify "good portion". I didn't mean a good portion proportionally of new grads I meant that at least a few dozen new grads out of 300+ would consider taking a job in the middle of nowhere for at least 2x incoming of crappy PP. Just cementing how the pod job market is hot garbage.

I work in an area that is significantly closer to civilization and offers the same if not more outdoor recreation activities. It took us 2 years to recruit a new OBGYN…

Anyone that say MDs have issues also finding jobs have no clue. Long vacancies for many positions. You are taken out to dinner knowing you will get the job, but want to make sure it will be a good fit.

Know of a MD finishing residency that actually made a pro/cons spreadsheet with like 20 offers. Location of job was not an issue. Do I want to be involved with teaching, research, do I want only 32 hours and full benefits etc, meanwhile their wife (very smart lady) a lawyer had one or two mediocre offers. They took the 32 hours and full benefits. The younger generation wants work/life balance. Working as an associate then possibly opening your own office rarely offers that. If it does, it is usually 15 years later when you have an associate or partner.

We are not MDs true, but to deny their job market is night and day different is wrong. Also a good market for RNs, PAs, CRNAs etc. Podiatry has always been more of a make your opportunity profession, but the market lately for many healthcare professions is insane and we were not invited to the party.
