Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are any of you who interviewed in the last week (i.e. March 12th-16th) still waiting to hear back?? I haven't received notice yet, and it is getting kinda close to the april 1st deadline for financial aid...just wondering..thanks!

I interviewed on the 22nd of Feb. and still no love ...

just wondering, are any of you concerned about the curriculum change at UAB? I'm really uneasy with the notion of being apart of the guinea pig class.

Many other medical schools in the country have already moved to the curriculum which we will be using. If anything, our class will have a little more freedom than other classes.

Quite honestly, I'm pretty pumped about this cirriculum change. I like to "learn material" over memorizing it. Hopefully we can all kick ass on the boards too! I have a question...does anyone know how UAB matched in residencies this season?

I interviewed on match day so I was able to catch a glimpse of the results that were posted. They looked really good, sorry I can't remember specific numbers but not surprisingly the most popular match place was UAB. But they had placements in just about every field and all over the country, some in boston, I think one at JHU, a couple at duke, new york, etc. Overall I was very impressed with the match list,,just wish I could remember more specifics about it...I am sure someone will be able to post it to SDN soon..

ok so I was totally wrong about the one match at JHU, but the list looks good nonetheless

I'm with my friend Rabbit here. This is going to be a -great- change, especially if we ALSO get cadavers to cut on.

I'm getting excited.

Unfortunately (by your lights), they informed us at the town hall yesterday that there would be NO cadaver dissection in the future. However, the faculty will provide you with prosections.

Be glad for this. About half to 2/3 of your time in anatomy lab is scraping fat off of what you want to see (or wish you could see), or skinning this area or that area for 30 minutes BEFORE you get to the hour and a half of scraping fat. Admittedly, it was sometimes fun to be cutting into people, but in reality you really botch stuff up half the time anyway. You can learn the relationships between things MUCH faster by using prosections. And in med school, faster is better, even if you don't get to use a reciprocating saw on an 87 yo woman's pelvis & splatter all your labmates with poo....😱

Wow, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

At least if I did that bit with the reciprocating saw, I would have some street cred with my son and his buddies  . Bring on the prosections I say!

Just in case it's news to anyone, at our town hall meeting yesterday the administration confirmed that next year anatomy will NOT be dissection based. Prosections, models, and vids for y'all apparently!

I just got the UAB acceptance email!!!...very stoked, now off to fill out all the finaid stuff!

Hey! Just got the call from Mark Scott this morning that I have been accepted to South!! Finally here from the school that I wanted to go to!! Better late than never!!! I am so DONE with this process!!! Hope that you all hear great news today as well despite this rainy weather (well at least on my part in Nashville). 😀😀😀😀😀😀

thanks slickpkg for the info on the dean's weekend. congrats to those who were accepted today! I was wondering if any of you who interviewed in feb or march and have been accepted have received campus assignments? Its been about 4 weeks and I still have no word.

CONGRATS to everyone who was accepted!!

As for campus assignments--don't hold your breath. =)

Also, slick is hilarious.

Hey guys & gals,

I wanted to invite those of you who are:
A) coming to the Dean's weekend or
B) local UABSOM class of 2011 people or
C) UABSOM students who are assisting with the Dean's weekend
D) local future USA students who don't mind hanging out with UAB students
to participate in a social our fraternity is holding on Friday evening. I added a link to the website that has the details about the event.

Come hang out with cool first years from the school of medicine. (And I'm using 'cool' rather broadly, considering we are all a bunch of study-a-holics these days).
Some of the members are planning a bar/band crawl following this event, so if you really want to get down, you can.

http://phide.uab.googlepages.com/v-richard's

You should remember that this fraternity is a co-ed organization, so while this will be a fun party, it isn't a bunch of guys getting a bunch of girls wasted for purient purposes...
Also, there are non-alcoholic beverages and food at the establishment we are attending, and some of the members are non-drinkers, so if you aren't a drinker you shouldn't feel too miserable, nor will you lack for company.

PM me if you have any questions or concerns.

Does anyone know if it is bad news if I didnt hear back from UAB today. No email and no change on my online status.

ah, that sounds like fun... just wish it wasn't THIS friday.... i assume this is the only "come hang out with your future classmates" event....??

This social is really a social originally planned for the regular (current) MS1 members. However, when we realized it coincided with the Dean's weekend, we figured we ought to extend the invitation to the MS0 peeps.

The fraternity will actually hold one or two (possibly more, depending on the enthusiasm & interest) "come hang out with your future classmates" events this spring/summer. Hopefully you can make it to one or more of those events.

Orientation week (run by the school and assisted by MS2 students) will also be filled with chances for you to meet and bond with your classmates. I strongly reccommend that any of you take full advantage of orientation to meet as many people as possible. I made a lot of great friends that week, and it helped make the transition to med school much more bearable.

I spoke to Leigh Ann Min earlier today and found out that the Deans weekend people will be busy Friday from 6pm on with an event for the school, so they won't be available to come to the event (unless they wanted to arrive early & leave early, which would be ok.)

I will be leaving the frat event at 6:30 or 7:00 and heading to the Dean's event thing that evening to help welcome the visiting students.

Husky,

I too have been assigned to Tuscaloosa. I also noticed that you have been on the Duke board. I am currently trying to decide btwn Duke and UAB. What is your status with regard to Duke? What do you think of the Tuscaloosa assignment?

By the way, anyone here feel a bit unnerved by the whole Dean's weekend thing. Anyone holding acceptances from higher ranked schools and, if so, has the lack of an invite to the weekend event caused you to rethink UAB? Just curious?

I personally am more interested in clinical research/academic medicine so I would be displeased if I did not get the birmingham assignment. I am not knocking the tuscaloosa assignment, I have actually heard from past UAB med graduates that you get to be more involved in your clinical rotations in tuscaloosa so if you are interested in fields like surgery then the tuscaloosa assignment is actually a major plus.
I am not going to front though, I am on the duke waitlist and will go to duke if admitted in may. But this has nothing to do with the rankings, I have a novel full of reasons why I want to go to duke but mostly because I am doing research at duke now that I love and want that third year of research very badly....I think duke vs. uab is all dependent on what you think you might want to do in the future, and from what I have seen, both have some big strengths over the other..but both are incredible schools, and both are in the south which is a plus in my book 👍

Yeah, I'm feeling very left out because of the Dean's Weekend thing, and because on Friday when a bunch of people got scholarships in their email, I got an application to apply for scholarships, with no explanation of what the heck the process was.

I don't think it shows good judgement that the admissions people would invite some to go spend a "special" expenses-paid weekend on campus and say nothing about it to the rest of us. It's kind of creating a social division in the class before the year even starts. Also, not real savvy since we're obviously all talking to one another about it on the net.

I wouldn't say I'm holding acceptances to higher-ranked schools, but some of equal caliber I think. This is making me reconsider my previous preference for UAB. Call it sour grapes if you want, but it's just taking some of the glow off for me.

But I really hope everybody has a great time this weekend. Party down for those of us stuck in New England! Man, I never have so much fun as when I'm partying in Alabama.

I too was worried a bit about the social division aspect of the Dean's weekend originally (and I didn't get an invite last year🙁 ), but I have to say that it hasn't mattered a damn to the members of our class. I don't think anyone could even tell you who those people are, and it seems to me that most people in our class mix pretty well. No one flaunts their scholarships or their class rank. ...Though there are one or two people who ask obnoxiously technical questions of the professor each day; however, I think their problem is more of a personality disorder issue than it is a deliberate assiness.
Personally, I can't figure out *what* criterion the school used to select people for this weekend thing. Maybe I'll ask the administration this weekend as I help out with the hosting stuff.

And don't give up on uab dude/dudette! Y'all are gonna have the best (most friendly, least bitchy) 2nd year class in the history of uab to help take care of you next year.

congrats !when did u interview, and your stats if u don't mind?

Thanks for the kind reassurances. I know the UAB students are the best! (BTW, I'm a dudette.) 🙂

I interviewed quite a long time ago in October, was then put on hold forever, and have been in incessant contact with Mark Scott since then. I had a 30 MCAT and 3.7 BCPM, 3.8 overall. I have never heard of South calling people to tell them they got in but my hold card did say they would let you know immediately. He just told me that my letter of acceptance was being signed by the dean and mailed out! Best wishes!:luck::luck:

Having been assigned to Tuscaloosa, I did a little research with folks already there and was told that T provides more hands on experience and that, as a practical matter, it is only for the 3rd year. The folks I spoke with said that most T assignees do their subspecialty rotations in Bham during their 4th year--with only a 6 week internship (or something of that nature) in Tuscaloosa.

The folks I spoke with said that most T assignees do their subspecialty rotations in Bham during their 4th year--with only a 6 week internship (or something of that nature) in Tuscaloosa. With that said, however, if you read some of articles written about or by the Dean during the past several years (all readily available with a google search) you will note that the accreditation review committee suggested that the school work toward equivalent opportunities at all of its clinical sites. (Which, if I may be so bold as to read btwn the lines, means that students assigned to Tuscaloosa or Huntsville may not have equal educational experiences). Not to mention, the cost of moving and upheaval. More importantly, hopefully Step 1 is taken before the move.

Birmingham was my first choice. The people that put down more than 1 location probably got, well, their second choice. 😱

I highly doubt there's a disadvantge in terms of educational experieneces at the different campuses. Personally, I wanted to go with Huntsville, where I could get more hands on experience instead of being stuck behind fellows and residents all the time like the Birmingham people will. Step 1 is taken at the end of the second year, so we all will be taking that after being in Birmingham. Of course, the Birmingham people will get more options in subspecialty rotations than the branch campuses will, but overall it shouldn't be that different.

I def. got my second choice and only put 2. A lot of people I've talked to fell in the same boat.

They'll have to really re-do the campus selection deal next year. I still don't understand why we arn't picking campuses in the middle of our M2 year.

As for the deans weekend--I'm with the dudette. I was bummed that I got an e-mail asking me to apply for scholarships the same time that everyone else was getting them. I still haven't gotten an official letter, so I'm still a bit in the dark.

That said, UAB rocks and I'm thrilled to be going there.

Knowing where you will be helps you plan for housing (why buy a house if you are moving in a year and a half?), shadowing, and which people in your class you will be willing to date.

I have heard that if you goto the H'ville or Tuscaloosa campuses that you can do rotations at B'ham if they do not have them at the branch campuses.

i just checked my status and it has changed to alternate-upper third but i havent received an email. anyone else have this? and does anyone know how much the waitlist usually moves and what my chances are? thanks yall

I just checked my email and it still says "under consideration". I feel this is bad. From what I have heard the upper third of the wait list moves. You should be fine. Lucky.

I too am on the Upper Third of the waitlist at UAB, but I actually will attend USA.

Does anyone have more information about the substantive portions of the town hall meeting?

By the way--who will be in Tuscaloosa?

AGGGHHH!!! Where are all the USA people🙂 Anyway, I rec. a HOLD from USA today (AGHHH!!!). Do they reject people, or does everyone who does not get an immediate acceptance get placed on a hold? Also, for people who have been placed on hold, how long did it take you to get off? Just trying to estimate where I really stand with this school.

Thanks

I received my hold in Novemberish time... but I am not sure what a hold means at this point... I am assuming that it is a sort of waitlist option?... when I called the lady last week before getting an acceptance... she told me that there would be three batches of letters mailed out... 1. acceptances 2. waitlist and 3. rejections.... sorry I cant be more helpful...

Keep in mind a lot of this may be subject to change. The gist was that you'll start off with 2-3 weeks of a course called Doctors and Society, or some such, which contains all the humanistic and "why you want to be a doctor" kind of stuff. Next up comes Fundamentals 1, then Fundamentals 2. These 2 classes contain the Biochem, Pharm, Phys, and other topics that are too extraneous to a system based approach to try to fit into those modules. Then comes winter break. You'll then have a couple of your systems modules before summer break starts. In second year the modules will continue, ending with an integration module around March when you'll have a Step 1 study break. The modules are a number of weeks each, with the longest appearing to be neuro, at 11 weeks. 3rd year will start a month or 2 earlier than it currently does, and there will be the same sorts of clinical rotations. Apparently interspersed there will be elective blocks that are non-clinical that you can fit in, which is why 3rd year is being started a little earlier. That's the nutshell version. All in all it sounds good in theory, I hope it goes well in practice. Good luck guys.

Oh, also, as far as course directors go, the modules are being developed by teams consisting of basic science professors who are currently teaching basic science classes, and clinicians. So for example, the prof who teaches renal phys is teamed with a nephrologist type to develop the renal module. So hopefully, you guys will get a more clinically relevant picture because of this.

thanks for taking the time to post that, Mr. D.

I got an email from UAB about not fulfilling a math requirement. I was wondering how strict they are about what classes they accept as "math" classes b/c I took an upper level physics class that I hope can fulfill this requirement.

i'm upper third as well. i think they should give us more info, like acctual rank and the average movement. we have no idea how many people are on the list so "upper third" could be anything. i just wish i knew my chances a little better so i could make some plans for next year.

Keep the information coming :horns:

so, when are we moving over to the Allo threads? =)

Does anybody's status page still read as campus choices received? Mine's been like that for about 2 1/2 weeks now ever since I filled out that campus selection.

UASOM kids:

Do you have any Fin. Aid info yet on Blazer? Mine says I've sent in all the form and am good to go, but no award.

Anyone else have an award?

Also--are you guys cracking on this pre-matric list at all?

I know this is a little far removed for some of you but I was wondering how you were supposed to submit your LORs with your secondaries. I have heard that some schools supply you with a envolope that they want teachers to submit the LOR in. I was just wondering how UAB wanted LORs to be submitted I wasn't sure if they had an agreement with interfolio.

Mine reads "Interview Complete-Remain Under Consideration" Bummer. I hope this helps. I asked this earlier in this thread but I am going to ask you. On your 2nd app menu page does it say "Pay your deposit online.'?
