Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Apparently USA has started using their waitlist, so we should see some acceptances from the top tier waitlisters there in the next day or two.

Hey ya'll check your emails cause I just got into UAB! Email sent at 4:28 P.M.

YESS!!! I did too!!! What tier were you in?

congrats to yall! as for me, i'm still waiting...

This is REALLY surprising! I was in the middle third! I wasn't expecting to get in at all..

Yeah, I got into UAB too today!!! I'm in SHOCK mode right now!!! 🙂 And I'm assigned to the Birmingham campus too which is great!

congrats guys. I was just wondering the people who got acceptances might post what tier they were in and maybe their stats so I might be able to grade myself? I was middle too and I am getting depressed now. 🙁

Accepted on Friday also. I am kind of surprised. I was middle third so I thought I would get in but it wouldn't be until much later. Also, I was assigned to Huntsville which is where I wanted to go.

I got in! Offer sent Friday at 4:35!! Assigned to bham. Also in top-third

Hey I was top third at UAB...

29N - 3.53 from Samford

To those of you still waiting, try not to stress out. I know it sucks but it'll work out. Best of luck to all of you.

congrats to everybody who got in...you guys deserved it...I was wondering would most of yall or other people that you have heard from prefer USA or UAB for med school?

I didn't check my email all weekend and found out about UAB as soon as I got to work this morning - I almost got up and walked out. I was in the top third as well. Congratulations to everyone!

For me, my top choice was UAB for a lot of reasons:
1) Location - I've lived in either Jefferson or Shelby County my entire life and did not want to move if possible.
2) Research - I will be honest I am not as familiar with the research opportunities available at USA as I am at UAB, but I know UAB has a lot of them. UAB requires 12 weeks of research and so I know there will be a lot of options for me. Don't assume this means, USA doesn't offer research, I am just not as familiar with them.
3) Work - I've worked at UAB for about 3.5 years, so I am comfortable with the UAB hospitals, I know some of the doctors, I know the downtown area really well. I almost feel like UAB was my undergrad and this is my "home school" even though I went somewhere else.
4) Personal/Financial - I rent a house with my sister for very cheap and if I were to move, almost anywhere will cost me twice as much or more. Plus a bunch of other issues like my mom's health and her living near Birmingham.

All that being said, I didn't get an interview at USA until mid march and before I got a chance to go I was accepted to UAB in early March so I decided not to go for the interview so as to not complicate or confuse my situation.

Hey I am going to buy a laptop to use while I am in medical school...do any of you know the recommendations/requirements for the computer I purchase? I can't seem to find anything online for UAB.

I remember for USA they said not to buy one until you begin school (they tell you what to get) but UAB said no such thing.

Anyone?

I found something about buying a computer on the website after a long time of searching but it was an old page from like 2001 or something and it recommended windows only lol.

I have a macbook and an imac and I think I will be fine because macs can run most programs and open most documents now. If worst comes to worst with bootcamp I can run windows on my imac as a second OS if for some reason I just had to have windows.

To be honest though I was so disappointed with Vista I couldn't see myself buying a new PC right now.

congrats man. If I ever get accepted and I found out in your situation I would have definitely been loud and immediately walk about without an explanation.

does anyone know where this is on the web? i thought it would it be linked off of our class of 2012 webpage, but i couldn't find it. and i don't remember seeing the link in the email either.

thanks!

I talked to Julie Calma on Monday and she said that the pre-matric checklist will be posted online (I'm guessing the class page) sometime in the coming weeks. I think it concerns things like shots/immunizations among other things. I was a little concerned about it b/c I'm going to be a little out of pocket for the majority of the summer, but I think most of it can be taken care of even if a person is not in Birmingham.

Hey guys,

I received an offer from Tulane yesterday and decided to accept! It's a lot more money but I think I will be much happier there. The thought of staying at UAB for another 4 years makes me want to die. I withdrew my application today so whoever is next on the list can have my spot. Good luck to everyone!

I wonder if schools send new acceptances to people as a spot opens up or do they do it once a week or something. Anyone know?

Beats me, but I wish I knew because I am in the middle third at UAB and am dying to get in!!

i took myself off the waitlist. maybe that helps?

Yeah...that would definetly help but what tier where you?...God..this waiting is killing me...I know this is kind of mean but if anybody is sure that they don't want to go to USA...can you guys please drop?? Sorry..I am just a bit anxious that is all...

yea I understand man I think the wait it killing us all....sigh...it's the weekend to so I can't even call them and ask them the same questions I always do.

does anyone know what time class starts in the morning for first years at uasom? any current first years care to chime in?

thanks.

hi everyone, congratulations to those getting in! looks like last year was just a weird random year with only 7 off the waitlist total. as far as yall's classes, you start at 10:10am and go until 3pm most days. (with an hour lunch). my class(2011) will be starting at 8am and going until 12. don't forget you'll have small groups and your clinical medicine classes on some days as well. those will be either from 8am-10 or 3pm-5. see yall in a couple months and make sure you take a break this summer!

any updates from anyone? I called South today and they said they have sent out stuff to people on the waiting list but I couldn't find out how many. This friday makes the two weeks people had to decide if they wanted to go to a school since uab's initial acceptances so maybe we'll find out something this friday or on the following monday. man I hope it's soon so I can stop studying for the mcat 😕

I can't really describe how relaxing it feels. Friday I received my acceptance email and it feels wonderful. See some of you at UASOM in the fall. For those of you who are still waiting to hear good luck to all of you! 🙂 I will be withdrawing myself from my south waiting list I was in the bottom tier there.

Desi, you really shouldn't worry, I'm sure you'll get in

I got accepted to UAB yesterday and will soon drop my spot at USA. Good luck to everyone!

Yeah, I know I am being a bit paranoid...but I really want to get in..and it sucks that I am soo close yet soo far away...I think I am getting obsessed by the minute...I just want to know where I stand and this waiting is literally killing me..I see all these people getting accepted at UAB but nobody at USA and it is freaking me out...I just want it to be over...by the way..if you are sure that you do not want to go to USA..can you please please drop out as soon as possible..I am pretty sure you guys can understand my situation..

Ironmansu...are you withdrawing from the waitlist or you were actually accepted to USA and are dropping out??

and bama...thankz for the encouragement...I really do appreciate it..

hey, i've decided to goto uab and have withdrew from usa, best of luck to you!

anyone doing housing for uab? do you guys know anything about university housing apartments? like who likes in it (undergrads/grads/older ppl?), how close is it to class, etc?

thanks

I would advise you to not live in university housing. There are plenty of older houses to rent and smaller apartment buildings in the Southside area which is like two mins away. The Highlands also have tons of condos and apartments and its about 5 mins away. Homewood and Vestavia are within 10 mins drive to the school and they are pretty nice towns to live in. They have alot less crime as well. Birmingham rent tends to be pretty cheap in bham, you will probably end up saving money be renting an apt or renting a house.

I will be withdrawing my spot on the waitlist at South.

Ironmansu and Bigjayl: What tier are you on the waitlist at USA?

BigJayl: If you meant University House apartments, then that is not a bad option, as it is close to campus and has mostly UAB students - undergrads, grads, graduate students, and even some young professionals who work on campus. While it is off campus, it is only a short distance away.

However, if you meant university housing as in the dorms, you are better off living in an off-campus apartment.

I lived in a campus dorm my first year as a UAB undergrad, then lived in one of the nicer apartments in Homewood for a few years, but have now taken an apartment in University House because of distance (not to mention gas prices, because from my Homewood apartment it took at least 20 minutes to get to UAB, sometimes worse during traffic). But, if you don't mind the drive, then you may want to look around.

Desi: I am in the third tier at South. Hope that helps! I'm sure your time is coming soon!

hey, i was in the mid at usa, goodluck to you man.

thanks for all the replies, i was referring to the university houseing off campus and i think i'm gonna go and talk to the ppl in the office/ look at it 🙂

in addition i'm also looking at some apt on the southside, if anyone's is looking for a roomie let me know (with or without an apt), let me know, i'd love to have a roommate! thanks guys

Hey Desi, have you heard anything from south yet?

or has anybody heard anything from south lately?

not a peep here...

i think i finally reached the point of realization that my worrying about when/if that letter is going to come will only drive me crazy...it sure as hell won't make that letter arrive any sooner (or at all for that matter; in my case at least)

so for now, i'll be chasing the elusive yellowfin tuna...which, i'm beginning to believe, is more difficult than getting accepted to medical school :hardy:

No, I haven't heard anything from south....It is kind of driving me crazy....I have to call them up and ask them what is going on...but have you guys heard about what is going on down there?

How long do we have to wait...I mean I know that doctors are supposed to be really patient and all but this is just driving me insane...*sigh* 🙁

mmmmmmm tuna, ha ha........good luck!

so desi, i wouldn't worry since supposedly they're going to dip into the bottom third this year and your in the middle, as for donk and I, well, we're lower third so we could be right on the line

you'll get in, no worries

with my luck, this year there will be historic waitlist movement that eventually reaches the bottom third and stops with accepting the person just in line ahead of me...i have a recurring nightmare/daydream that, come Aug14(when i believe USA class starts and the '08 entering class is FINAL) my name will be stuck atop the remaining waitlisters, missing acceptance by a person or two...

desi, quit worrying. i know how you feel; i spent 4 solid months being miserable 24/7, practically living underneath the mailbox, waiting for that letter to come. just enjoy yourself right now, you will get into medical school at some point...be it this year or the next. one more year wouldn't kill ya would it?

i want to enjoy my last summer of freedom. if i do somehow, miraculously get to start this august, i want to enjoy myself before beginning a life in the books.

a watched pot has never boiled for me...so i've quit watching the pot...or mailbox, that is

good luck to all 👍

Trying to plan a trip in late July/early aug and am trying to take into account the slim possibility that I might get accepted to USA, which will probably ensure that I do not get in. Anybody know when mandatory events such as orientation, etc are scheduled?
